Theoretically predicted evolutionary phases of massive close binaries are compared with the observations. For the evolution up to the High-Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) phase there is fair agreement between theory and observation. Beyond the HMXB phase there is much uncertainty. Notably it is puzzling why we observe so few systems consisting of a helium star and a neutron star (Cygnus X-3 is the only one found so far), and why the incidence of double neutron stars is so low. A better understanding of Common Envelope evolution is required in order to answer these questions. The role of velocity kicks imparted to neutron stars during supernova collapse is discussed. Such kicks might cause many runaway OB stars to be single.  相似文献

The Cassini RADAR instrument is a multimode 13.8 GHz multiple-beam sensor that can operate as a synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imager, altimeter, scatterometer, and radiometer. The principal objective of the RADAR is to map the surface of Titan. This will be done in the imaging, scatterometer, and radiometer modes. The RADAR altimeter data will provide information on relative elevations in selected areas. Surfaces of the Saturn’s icy satellites will be explored utilizing the RADAR radiometer and scatterometer modes. Saturn’s atmosphere and rings will be probed in the radiometer mode only. The instrument is a joint development by JPL/NASA and ASI. The RADAR design features significant autonomy and data compression capabilities. It is expected that the instrument will detect surfaces with backscatter coefficient as low as −40 dB.RADAR Team LeaderThis revised version was published online in July 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

On the basis of data, obtained by means of the ground-based solar service RSTN (Radio Solar Telescope Network) and the geostationary satellite system GOES, the relationship between the solar cosmic rays (SCR) intensity I p with the proton energy E p > 1 MeV and parameters of meter-decameter type II radio bursts in the frequency range of 25–180 MHz is studied. The process of proton acceleration by shock waves was characterized by the frequency drift velocity of radio bursts V mII and the relative difference between radio emission frequencies at the first two harmonics b. It is shown that the coefficient of correlation between I p and b increases with E p growing from 0.40 to 0.70, while a similar coefficient between I p and V mII does not exceed 0.30. Indications in favor of the two-stage SCR acceleration model are obtained.  相似文献

The Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) was a unique effort aimed at studying the possibilities of satellite broadcasting for education and national development. This one-year joint India-USA project was carried out in 1975–1976 using the ATS-6 spacecraft. This paper briefly describes the experiment and its major findings. It goes on to distill the learning experiences derived from SITE and analyses the extent to which these have influenced the design and configuration of India's domestic satellite system, INSAT. INSAT-1B, which will serve as a replacement for the short-lived INSAT-1A, will be launched shortly and will be operational by the end of 1983. Its payload includes two S-band TV transponders capable of broadcasting directly to augmented TV sets. The paper examines which lessons of SITE are being applied in the planning and operationalisation of the TV system and discusses why others are not being taken account of. Major issues confronting TV system planners in developing countries like India are highlighted and the possible role of satellite broadcasting discussed in this context. The paper concludes by outlining an “ideal scenario” for a large, multilingual country like India, towards which TV planners could attempt to strive.  相似文献

The Orbital Cable System (OCS) consists of a vehicle with an engine, a long connecting cable (string) and a satellite probe for low altitude geophysical explorations. The vehicle orbits the Earth at an altitude of 200–250 km and tows a probe at an altitude of 100–150 km. The air drag is compensated by the vehicle engine thrust. In the OCS dynamics study the cable weight, elasticity and air drag are taken into account. The OCS stationary motions are found, and stability of these motions is investigated. The OCS periodical motions that are close to the stationary motions are found. Simple ways of the OCS deployment in orbit are described.  相似文献

The buildup of CO2 by fossil-fuel burning and associated climatic changes have become the subject of intensive investigations. Although the time scale on which significant climatic changes (e.g. mean temperature changes of several degrees, appreciable changes in global and regional rainfalls and winds, etc.) are expected to occur is long, it has been noted that the magnitude of the energy system is so vast that modifications in the primary resource mix should preferably be initiated within a decade or sooner. The notion that the most economical energy source will be replaced globally in response to longterm climate model predictions is probably false. Before policy matters of this type can be discussed reasonably, careful assessments must be made of alternative global measures that do not require curtailments of fossil-fuel applications. This study on active measures for reducing climate changes caused by escalating CO2 concentrations deals with potentially important areas of research. We find: (a) reductions in the solar input to the Earth by reflecting sunlight directly are prohibitively costly; (b) desired changes in Earth albedo through judicious introduction of small particles can probably be accomplished at acceptable cost through the use of modified combustors on high-flying aircraft.  相似文献
