Effects of relative humidity, light intensity and photoperiod on growth of 'Ga Jet' and 'TI-155' sweetpotato cultivars, using the nutrient film technique (NFT), have been reported. In this study, the effect of ambient temperature regimes (constant 28 degrees C and diurnal 28:22 degrees C day:night) and different CO2 levels (ambient, 400, 1000 and 10000 microliters/L--400, 1000 and 10000 ppm) on growth of one or both of these cultivars in NFT are reported. For a 24-h photoperiod, no storage roots were produced for either cultivar in NFT when sweetpotato plants were grown at a constant temperature of 28 degrees C. For the same photoperiod, when a 28:22 degrees C diurnal temperature variation was used, there were still no storage roots for 'TI-155' but the cv. 'Ga Jet' produced 537 g/plant of storage roots. For both a 12-h and 24-h photoperiod, 'Ga Jet' storage root fresh and dry weight tended to be higher with a 28:22 degrees C diurnal temperature variation than with a constant 28 degrees C temperature regime. Preliminary results with both 'Ga Jet' and 'TI 155' cultivars indicate a distinctive diurnal stomatal response for sweetpotato grown in NFT under an ambient CO2 level. The stomatal conductance values observed for 'Ga Jet' at elevated CO2 levels indicated that the difference between the light- and dark-period conductance rates persisted at 400, 1000, and 10000 microliters/L.  相似文献

The Fast Auroral SnapshoT (FAST) satellite was launched by a Pegasus XL on August 21, 1996. This was the second launch in the NASA SMall EXplorer (SMEX) program. Early in the mission planning the decision was made to have the University of California at Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory (UCB-SSL) mechanical engineering staff provide all of the spacecraft appendages, in order to meet the short development schedule, and to insure compatibility. This paper describes the design development, testing and on-orbit deployment of these boom systems: the 2 m carbon fiber magnetometer booms, the 58 m tip to tip spin-plane wire booms, and the 7 m dipole axial stiff booms.  相似文献

A review of the physics and gasdynamics associated with conventional CO2-N2 gasdynamic lasers (GDL's) is given, including a short survey of the state of the art. The role of advanced, downstream mixing GDL's is examined, and the question is addressed: Can such downstream mixing GDL's provide an order-of-magnitude increase in power output over the conventional device? Finally, combustion driven GDL's with unconventional fuels are examined, and new results for gain and maximum available power are given for various fuel-oxidizer combinations.  相似文献

Recent observations of the thermal emission of Mercury at microwave and infrared frequencies now permit a determination of the thermal and electrical properties of the subsurface of the planet. Radar and optical measurements show that the rotation period is 58.65 days, 2/3 of the orbital period. Several negative spectrographic searches verify that the effects of an atmosphere need not be taken into account in computing surface and subsurface temperatures. The observed thermal emission from the planet can then be interpreted from models similar to those developed for study of the Moon but adapted to the peculiar diurnal insolation of Mercury. The observations of Epstein et al. (1970) at 3.3 mm and of Klein (1970a) at 3.75 cm, when interpreted together with recent laboratory measurements of thermal properties of terrestrial and lunar rock powders, indicate that the ratio of electrical to thermal skin depth is 0.9 ± 0.3 times the wavelength in centimeters. Further results of this analysis of the subsurface are: Density = 1.5 ± 0.4 g cm-3; Electric loss tangent = 0.009 ± 0.004; Inverse thermal inertia = (15 ± 6) × 10–6 erg-1 cm2 s1/2 K; Equatorial midnight temperature = 100 ± 15K.The microwave data generally conform to the predictions of the thermophysical models of Mercury developed by Morrison and Sagan (1967), including a suggestion that variations having mean periods of 50 days and 35 days are present in addition to the classical phase effect with period about 116 days. The time-averaged microwave temperature of the planet appears to increase 25 % from millimeter to decimeter wavelengths; this increase suggests that radiation plays an important role in the transport of heat in the subsurface. All of the conclusions of this review indicate that the thermophysical behavior of Mercury closely approximates that expected for the Moon, were it placed in the orbit of Mercury.  相似文献

The Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission to the Moon utilized an integrated scientific measurement system comprised of flight, ground, mission, and data system elements in order to meet the end-to-end performance required to achieve its scientific objectives. Modeling and simulation efforts were carried out early in the mission that influenced and optimized the design, implementation, and testing of these elements. Because the two prime scientific observables, range between the two spacecraft and range rates between each spacecraft and ground stations, can be affected by the performance of any element of the mission, we treated every element as part of an extended science instrument, a science system. All simulations and modeling took into account the design and configuration of each element to compute the expected performance and error budgets. In the process, scientific requirements were converted to engineering specifications that became the primary drivers for development and testing. Extensive simulations demonstrated that the scientific objectives could in most cases be met with significant margin. Errors are grouped into dynamic or kinematic sources and the largest source of non-gravitational error comes from spacecraft thermal radiation. With all error models included, the baseline solution shows that estimation of the lunar gravity field is robust against both dynamic and kinematic errors and a nominal field of degree 300 or better could be achieved according to the scaled Kaula rule for the Moon. The core signature is more sensitive to modeling errors and can be recovered with a small margin.  相似文献

According to the UK government, the announcement in July 1987 of a freeze on the British National Space Centre's (BNSC) budget was based solely on lack of money and the belief that private industry, rather than the state, should fund space activities. In challenging the validity of this view, the author suggests that it has also been used to conceal internal bureaucratic competition and a myopic, market-driven mind-set.  相似文献

Morrison D 《Astrobiology》2003,3(1):193-205
The discipline of astrobiology includes the dynamics of biological evolution. One of the major ways that the cosmos influences life is through the catastrophic environmental disruptions caused when comets and asteroids collide with a planet. We now recognize that such impacts have caused mass extinctions and played a major role in determining the evolution of life on Earth. The time-averaged impact flux as a function of projectile energy can be derived from lunar cratering statistics as well as the current population of near Earth asteroids (NEAs). Effects of impacts of various energies can be modeled, using data from historic impacts [such as the Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) impactor 65 million years ago] and the observed 1994 bombardment of Jupiter by fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. It is of particular interest to find from such models that the terrestrial environment is highly vulnerable to perturbation from impacts, so that even such a small event as the KT impact (by a projectile 10-15 km in diameter) can lead to a mass extinction. Similar considerations allow us to model the effects of still smaller (and much more likely) impacts, down to the size of the asteroid that exploded over Tunguska in 1908 (energy approximately 10 megatons). Combining the impact flux with estimates of environmental and ecological effects reveals that the greatest contemporary hazard is associated with impactors near 1 million megatons in energy (approximately 2 km in diameter for an asteroid). The current impact hazard is significant relative to other natural hazards, and arguments can be developed to illuminate a variety of public policy issues. The first priority in any plan for defense against impactors is to survey the population of Earth-crossing NEAs and project their orbits forward in time. This is the purpose of the Spaceguard Survey, which has already found more than half of the NEAs >1 km in diameter. If there is an NEA on a collision course with Earth, it can be discovered and the impact predicted with decades or more of warning. It is then possible to consider how to deflect or disrupt the NEA. Unlike other natural hazards, the impact risk can be largely eliminated, given sufficient advanced knowledge to take action against the threatening projectile.  相似文献

The NASA Astrobiology Roadmap provides guidance for research and technology development across the NASA enterprises that encompass the space, Earth, and biological sciences. The ongoing development of astrobiology roadmaps embodies the contributions of diverse scientists and technologists from government, universities, and private institutions. The Roadmap addresses three basic questions: How does life begin and evolve, does life exist elsewhere in the universe, and what is the future of life on Earth and beyond? Seven Science Goals outline the following key domains of investigation: understanding the nature and distribution of habitable environments in the universe, exploring for habitable environments and life in our own solar system, understanding the emergence of life, determining how early life on Earth interacted and evolved with its changing environment, understanding the evolutionary mechanisms and environmental limits of life, determining the principles that will shape life in the future, and recognizing signatures of life on other worlds and on early Earth. For each of these goals, Science Objectives outline more specific high-priority efforts for the next 3-5 years. These 18 objectives are being integrated with NASA strategic planning.  相似文献
