The production rate and solid content of waste streams found in a life support system for a space habitat (in which plants are grown for food) are discussed. Two recycling scenarios, derived from qualitative considerations as opposed to quantitative mass and energy balances, tradeoff studies, etc., are presented; they reflect differing emphases on and responses to the waste stream formation rates and their composition, as well as indicate the required products from waste treatment that are needed in a life support system. The data presented demonstrate the magnitude of the challenge to developing a life support system for a space habitat requiring a high degree of closure. 相似文献

The radiation chemistry of aqueous solutions of formaldehyde was studied in order to obtain an insight into the possible role of ionizing radiation on cometary environments. Aqueous solutions of 1.0 mol dm-3 formaldehyde were exposed to gamma-radiation in the dose range from 0.01 to 1200 kGy at 298 K. The radiation chemical yield of decomposition of formaldehyde was determined to be: G(-CH2(OH)2)-26.3 +/- 1.2. The high radiation chemical yield of decomposition was explained by a chain reaction initiated by the radical CH(OH)2 with formaldehyde. Computer fitting of the experimental data gives k(CH(OH)2 + CH2(OH)2)- 8.0xl0(1) dm3 mol-1 s-1. In the computer treatment of experimental findings we used 54 equations to consider the radiolysis of water and 11 reactions for the radiolysis of aqueous formaldehyde. Based on previous estimates of the total dose of ionizing radiation that comets have accumulated over 4.6 billion years, we predict a radiation damage-depth curve of formaldehyde in comet nuclei. 相似文献

Shock waves, as evidenced by type II radio bursts, often accompany flares and coronal mass ejection transients. At present, the density enhancements observed by coronagraphs are believed by some to be ejected matter from the low corona, and by others to be the compressed material behind a shock front. If the former is correct, one would expect in some cases to see a density enhancement, associated with the compression region of the shock, some distance ahead of the transient ejecta. Such a density enhancement has not been previously reported.The coronal transient of 1980 June 29 (0233 UT) was observed with the High Altitude Observatory's Coronagraph/Polarimeter aboard SMM. This flare-associated coronal transient event was well observed with the Culgoora Radioheliograph, including a well-developed type II burst. Visible on the coronagraph images is a faint circular arc moving out well ahead of the transient loops. This arc is moving at more than 900 km s?1 while the transient itself is moving at a speed of about 600 km s?1. Both the arc and transient appear to have originated either prior to the X-ray flare or at some height above the flare at the time of the flare. The type II burst observed at Culgoora is associated with the transient loops, and no type II emission is identified with the faint arc.Due to its great speed, we interpret the faint arc as a manifestation of a shock wave, but also envision a separate shock wave associated with the transient loops as evidenced by the type II emission. Preliminary density measurements are consistent with this interpretation, and show the outer shock wave associated with the faint arc to have a Mach number MA ≤ 1.7. First order Fermi shock acceleration of electrons, protons and alpha particles is compared to observations of energetic particle events. For each event, a unique shock compression ratio produces spectra in good agreement with observation. The simple model predicts that the acceleration time to a given energy will be approximately equal for electrons and protons and, for reasonable solar parameters, can be less than 1 second to ~ 100 MeV. 相似文献

Lenses of mice irradiated with 250 MeV protons, 670 MeV/amu 20Ne, 600 MeV/amu 56Fe, 600 MeV/amu 93Nb and 593 MeV/amu 139La ions were evaluated by analyzing cytopathological indicators which have been implicated in the cataractogenic process. The LETs ranged from 0.40 keV/micrometer to 953 keV/micrometer and fluences from 1.31 10(3)/mm2 to 4.99 x 10(7)/mm2. 60Co gamma-rays were used as the reference radiation. The doses ranged from 10 to 40 cGy. The lenses were assessed 64 weeks post irradiation in order to observe the late effects of LET and dose on the target cell population of the lens epithelium. Our study shows that growth dependent pathological changes occur at the cellular level as a function of dose and LET. The shapes of the RBE-LET and RBE-dose curves are consistent with previous work on eye and other biological systems done in both our laboratory and others. The RBEmax's were estimated, for the most radiation cataract related cytological changes, MN frequency and MR disorganization, by calculating the ratio of the initial slopes of dose effect curve for various heavy ions to that of 60Co gamma-ray. For each ion studied, the RBEmax derived from micronucleus (MN) frequency is similar to that derived from meridional row (MR) disorganization, suggesting that heavy ions are equally efficient at producing each type of damage. Furthermore, on a per particle basis (particle/cell nucleus), both MN frequency and MR disorganization are LET dependent indicating that these classic precataractogenic indicators are multi-gene effects. Poisson probability analysis of the particle number traversing cell nuclei (average area = 24 micrometers2) suggested that single nuclear traversals determine these changes. By virtue of their precataractogenic nature the data on these endpoints intimate that radiation cataract may also be the consequence of single hits. In any case, these observations are consistent with the current theory of the mechanism of radiation cataractogenesis, which proposes that genomic damage to the epithelial cells surviving the exposure is responsible for opacification. 相似文献

During the Energy Budget Campaign, several profiles of the density and temperature of the upper atmosphere were obtained. The measurements were made using rocket-borne instrumentation launched from ESRANGE, Sweden and Andoya Rocket Range, Norway during November and December, 1980. The techniques included meteorological temperature sondes, passive falling spheres, accelerometer instrumented falling spheres, density gauges, mass spectrometers and infrared emission experiments. The instruments provided data within the altitude range from 20 km to 150 km. The measurements were made during periods which have been grouped into three categories by level of geomagnetic activity. Analysis has been made to compare the results and to examine the oscillations and fluctuations in the vertical profiles for scales ranging between hundreds of meters and tens of kilometers. Most of the features observed fit qualitatively within the range expected for internal gravity waves. The geomagnetic storm conditions may be associated with enhanced wave activity and heating observed in the lower thermosphere. 相似文献

In Xenopus laevis tadpoles, we studied the static vestibuloocular reflex (rVOR) in relation to modifications of the gravitational environment to find basic mechanisms of how altered gravitational forces (AGF) affect this reflex. Animals were exposed to microgravity during space flight or hypergravity (3g) for 4 to 12 days. Basic observations were that (1)the development of the rVOR is significantly affected by altered gravitational conditions, (2) the duration of 1g-readaptation depends on the strength of the test stimulus, (3) microgravity induces malformations of the body which are related to the rVOR depression. Future studies are based on the hypotheses (1) that the vestibular nuclei play a key roll in the adaptation to AGF conditions, (2) that the stimulus transducing systems in the sense organ are affected by AGF conditions, and (3) that fertilized eggs will be converted to normal adults guided by physiological and morphological set points representing the genetic programs. Developmental retardation or acceleration, or otherwise occurring deviations from standard development during embryonic and postembryonic life will activate genes that direct the developmental processes towards normality. 相似文献

The performance of six polarimetric target detection algorithms is analyzed. The detection performance of the optimal polarimetric detector (OPD), the identity-likelihood-ratio-test (ILRT), the polarimetric whitening filter (PWF), the single-polarimetric channel detector, the span detector, and the power maximization synthesis (PMS) detector is compared. Results are presented for both probabilistic and deterministic targets in the presence of complex Gaussian clutter. The results indicate that the PWF and the ILRT typically achieve near optimal performance. Theoretical models of the ionosphere of Venus have been constructed in the past without due consideration of the fact that the ionosphere is sometimes magnetized. This paper examines some differences between the magnetized and unmagnetized dayside Venus ionosphere using the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Langmuir probe and magnetometer data. Particular attention is given to the evaluation of the altitude profiles of the thermal electron heating and comparison of the magnitude of the magnetic force(¯vׯB) ׯB with other forces in the ionosphere. Several examples illustrate how heating profiles are different in the magnetized ionosphere with effective heating below ~200 km altitude reduced by orders of magnitude compared to the field-free ionosphere. The force associated with the magnetic field is comparable to other forces in the magnetized ionosphere. The measured plasma density, electron temperature and magnetic field thus suggest that large-scale magnetic fields should be included in future ionosphere models. 相似文献

The Polar satellite has explored the high-latitude, high-latitude magnetosphere out to 9 Earth radii (Re). The magnetic field data returned from this mission can be used both to provide data for new empirical models and to test existing models. Tests include comparing the observed location of the polar cusp with its position in the empirical models and comparing the strength of the magnetic field in the surrounding region. Near the cusp the magnetosphere is quite sensitive to solar wind conditions. In particular the energy density of the cusp plasma depends on the pressure of the solar wind applied to the interface of the cusp and the sheath. The applied pressure in turn depends on the shape of the magnetopause and the orientation of that interface, both controlled by the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models provide a coarse picture of the magnetosphere at high latitudes. While generally quite realistic, these too require testing against observations because even the MHD models must make some simplifying assumptions. 相似文献
