Analysis of a Long-Distance System Measuring the Concentration of Atmospheric Gaseous Pollutants

A detailed inaccuracy and sensitivity analysis of a long-distance air pollution detection system, using a laser measuring the resonance absorption of polluting molecules, is introduced. The noise and the dynamic range of the radiation detectors used, the atmospheric inhomogeneities, and the atmospheric propagation losses of the electromagnetic radiation are considered. In addition, the best measuring path length as a function of a molecule density and atmospheric transparency and irregularity is discussed.     

The Synthetic-Array Radar Image of a Flat Plate

The radar cross section of a flat plate has a sin x/x lobe structure. If a synthetic-array radar flies past the plate the resulting image is dependent upon what part of this lobe structure is sampled. When the plate is parallel to the flight path, the image is a line as wide as the plate. If the plate is not parallel, only the discontinuities at the ends of the plate are visible in the image.     

Experiments with injection of powerful plasma jet into the ionosphere

This paper describes two rocket experiments “Aelita” with high power lithium plasma injection. The results of onboard magnetometer, massspectrometer, photometer, plasma, corpuscular and ground radar measurements are given. Dynamics and structure of plasma formation are discussed.     

LS Localizer Multipath Analysis

The scattering effect of structures on Instrument Landing System localizer signals is analyzed in this paper. A generalized computer program results which can be used to determine the reflection from surfaces of most materials and orientations for which the radius of curvature is large compared with the wavelength. For most reflecting walls, a closed form solution is used and the computation time is short. The program will enable users to determine the placement of hangars, towers, etc., in airports and to find ways to reduce their effect on localizer facilities.     

Postmission plasma volume and red-cell mass changes in the crews of the first two Skylab missions

Red-cell mass determinations were performed before and after the first two Skylab missions. The data showed a 14% mean decrease in red-cell mass after the 28-day mission and a 12% mean decrease after the 59-day mission. The red-cell mass returned to premission levels more slowly after the shorter (28-day) than after the longer mission. Plasma volume decreases were found after each mission. with the crew from the longer mission showing the greater change (13% vs. 8.4%). Postmission decreases in red-cell mass and plasma volume have been a general finding in crewmen who return from short or long spaceflight.     

Formation and evolution of low-mass Algols

We discuss the origin, evolution and fate of low-mass Algols (LMA) that have components with initial masses less than 2.5 M₀. The semi-major axes of orbits of pre-LMA do not exceed 20–25 R₀. The rate of formation of Algol-type stars is 0.01/year. Magnetic stellar winds may be the factor that determines the evolution of LMA. Most LMA end their lives as double helium degenerate dwarfs with M₁/M₂ 0.88 (like L870-2). Some of them even merge through angular momentum loss caused by gravitational waves.     

Logistics Transportation for Space Station Support

Logistics support of a long duration space station will dictate a high degree of space flight activity to rotate personnel and transport supplies and equipment. Systems characteristics and mission requirements for space station logistics have been analyzed within the context of a broad spectrum of space missions. Preliminary concepts for a space shuttle system (space transportation) have been developed. This system can support not only a space station program, but a wide variety of space missions for both NASA and the DOD.     

A Comparison of Expected Flight Times for Intercept and Pure Pursuit Missiles

The relative merits of intercept and pure pursuit homing are investigated by comparing the expected flight times to a nonmaneuvering target. The analysis is performed for the initial target heading angle uniformly distributed with arbitrary mean and variance. Two specific examples illustrate that intercept homing holds little statistical advantage over pure pursuit homing except when the speed advantage of the missile is very small.     

Volume Properties for the Wideband Ambiguity Function

It is shown that the volume under the wideband ambiguity function is close to the square of the signal energy. The ambiguity volume is asymptotically conserved as the signal approaches the narrowband case. The narrowband ambiguity volume is a lower bound for the volume of the wideband ambiguity function.
