Space worthy refrigeration capable of providing a 100 mK and below heat load sink for bolometric detectors will be required for the next generation of sub-millimetre space missions. Adiabatic demagnetisation refrigeration (ADR), being a gravity independent laboratory method for obtaining such temperatures, is a favourable technique for utilisation in space.We show that by considering a 3 salt pill refrigerator rather than the classic single salt pill design the space prohibitive laboratory ADR properties of high magnetic field (6 Tesla) and a<2 K environment (provided by a bath of liquid4He) can be alleviated, while maintaining a sufficient low temperature hold time and short recycle time. The additional salt pills, composed of Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) provide intermediate cooling stages, enabling operation from a 4 K environment provided by a single 4 K mechanical cooler, thereby providing consumable free operation. Such ADRs could operate with fields as low as 1 Tesla allowing the use of high temperature, mechanically cooled superconducting magnets and so effectively remove the risk of quenching.We discuss the possibility of increasing the hold time from 3 hours, for the model presented, to between 40 and 80 hours, plus reducing the number of salt pills to two, through the use of a more efficient Garnet.We believe the technical advances necessitated by the envisaged ADRs are minimal and conclude that such ADRs offer a long orbital life time, consumable free, high efficiency means of milli-Kelvin cooling, requiring relatively little laboratory development. 相似文献

We calculate the conditions of pickup protons inside the termination shock. Outside 50 AU the partial pressure of pickup protons is greater than the magnetic pressure by a factor of > 10, and greater than the partial pressure of solar wind protons by a factor of > 100. Observations of plasma and magnetic fields by Pioneer 10 and 11 and Voyager 1 and 2 reveal that MHD shocks are an important component of the large-scale solar wind structures in the outer heliosphere. This review discusses recent progress in simulation studies of the nonlinear evolution of the solar wind structures, and in particular concentrates on the theoretical development and applications of the shock interactions model. Various stream propagation models, which do not use the Rankine-Hugoniot relations to calculate the jump conditions at shock crossings, have been used to simulate the essential evolution process of isolated streams and the formation and propagation of corotating and transient shocks. They produce fairly good results in the region up to a few AU. In 1984, the shock interactions model was introduced to study the evolution of large-scale solar wind structures in the region outside 1 AU up to several tens of AU. The model uses the exact Rankine-Hugoniot relations to calculate the shock speed and shock strength at all shock crossings. So that the model can more accurately calculate the shock speeds and the accumulated irreversible shock heating of plasma at several tens of AU. The applications of the shock interactions model are presented in three groups. (a) The first group covers the basic interaction of a shock with the ambient solar wind, the formation and propagation of shock pairs, and the collision and merging of shocks. (b) The second group covers the use of the shock interactions model to simulate the nonlinear evolution of large-scale solar wind structures in the outer heliosphere. These simulation results can provide the detailed evolution process for large-scale solar wind structures in the vast region not directly observed. Two selected studies are reported. (c) Finally, the shock interactions model is applied to studying the heating of the solar wind in the outer heliosphere. The model calculations support shocks being chiefly responsible for the heating of the solar wind plasma in the outer heliosphere at least up to 30 AU. 相似文献

A knowledge-based system for air traffic control (ATC) in terminal control regions is designed for improving service and operation. Domain knowledge is established following rules, regulations, and comments from controllers. An expert system is adopted for approach control and airport control in the terminal control region. The proposed system was implemented in PC-AT with Turbo Prolog. The air terminal control monitor was checked with regard to flight information input, real-time data refreshment, air traffic rescheduling, constraint violation double checking, emergency responses, and normal monitoring. An X-ray/gamma-ray spectrometer has been developed as part of a rendezvous mission with the near-Earth asteroid, 433 Eros, in an effort to answer fundamental questions about the nature and origin of asteroids and comets. During about 10 months of orbital operations commencing in early 1999, the X-ray/Gamma-ray Spectrometer will develop global maps of the elemental composition of the surface of Eros. The instrument remotely senses characteristic X-ray and gamma-ray emissions to determine composition. Solar excited X-ray fluorescence in the 1 to 10 keV range will be used to measure the surface abundances of Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe with spatial resolutions down to 2 km. Gamma-ray emissions in the 0.1 to 10 MeV range will be used to measure cosmic-ray excited elements O, Si, Fe, H and naturally radioactive elements K, Th, U to surface depths on the order of 10 cm. The X-ray spectrometer consists of three gas-filled proportional counters with a collimated field of view of 5° and an energy resolution of 850 eV @ 5.9 keV. Two sunward looking X-ray detectors monitor the incident solar flux, one of which is the first flight of a new, miniature solid-state detector which achieves 600 eV resolution @ 5.9 keV. The gamma-ray spectrometer consists of a NaI(Tl) scintillator situated within a Bismuth Germanate (BGO) cup, which provides both active and passive shielding to confine the field of view and eliminate the need for a massive and costly boom. New coincidence techniques enable recovery of single and double escape events in the central detector. The NaI(Tl) and BGO detectors achieve energy resolutions of 8.7% and 14%, respectively @ 0.662 MeV. A data processing unit based on an RTX2010 microprocessor provides the spacecraft interface and produces 256-channel spectra for X-ray detectors and 1024-channel spectra for the raw, coincident, and anti-coincident gamma-ray modes. A framework is presented for controlling a phased array radar for tracking highly maneuvering targets in the presence of false alarms (FAs) and electronic countermeasures (ECMs). Algorithms are presented for track formation and maintenance; adaptive selection of target revisit interval, waveform and detection threshold; and neutralizing techniques for ECM, namely, against a standoff jammer (SOJ) and range gate pull off (RGPO). The interacting multiple model (IMM) estimator in combination with the probabilistic data association (PDA) technique is used for tracking. A constant false alarm rate (CFAR) approach is used to adaptively select the detection threshold and radar waveform, countering the effect of jammer-induced false measurements. The revisit interval is selected adaptively, based on the predicted angular innovation standard deviations. This tracker/radar-resource-allocator provides a complete solution to the benchmark problem for target tracking and radar control.
