In many radar systems, efficient use of transmitter power requires the transmission of a constant-amplitude signal for a substantial fraction of time; for a monotonic transmission, however, the range resolution is restricted by the length of the transmitted pulse. Linear frequency modulation removes this constraint for targets with negligible, or known, radial velocities; it is not suitable, however, for simultaneous observations of range and radial velocity (Doppler shift). This paper describes a class of waveforms suitable for simultaneous measurement of range and Doppler shift. These waveforms are characterized by a uniform distribution in frequency and by pseudorandom frequency changes. Uniform frequency distribution is attained by a uniform spacing of frequencies with each frequency present for an identical length of time. Frequency changes are effected by sequencing the frequencies with a pseudorandom number generator. Ambiguity functions are computed for pseudorandom frequencymodulated waveforms designed for ionospheric backscatter studies. By suitable choice of parameters, the ambiguity function becomes a narrow central peak surrounded by a plateau whose height varies randomly between zero and approximately twice its average. This paper is concerned with a high-performance nutation damper for use in dual-spin spacecraft. The damper described here makes use of a wheel of uniform mass distribution. The wheel experiences torques which are produced by inertial forces. Damping and restoring (spring) torques are provided by means of a torsional arrangement built around the center of the wheel. The performance characteristics of the above nutation damper are evaluated by considering the small astronomy satellite (SAS-A) spacecraft parameters, and the results for an optimum design of the damper are presented. This paper investigates the possibility of generating an on-off limit cycle mode in the WHECON attitude control system. lt is shown that, by eliminating the off set angle ? in the roll-actuated control torquer, the WHECON system can be reduced to the structure considered earlier by Mendel and, therefore, an on-off limit cycle can be generated simply by introducing an appropriate amount of asymmetry into the deadzone characteristic of the WHECON controller. Because with this mode of on-off limit cycle the thruster jets will fire only once in each cycle of the oscillation, it is claimed that a considerable amount of fuel can be saved by the proposed modifications to the original WHECON design. The problem is considered of using the PROGRESS transport spacecraft, which will deliver the payload on the ISS, as a free flying platform for realization of space experiments. For maintenance of the ISS 5-6 PROGRESS flights per year are planned. Usually after delivery of the payload the PROGRESS undocks from the ISS and burns down in the Earth atmosphere. However, the operating conditions of its onboard systems allow to prolong operation and to make free flight near to the station and repeatedly to be docked to it. The attitude stability of a dual-spin satellite containing energy disipators on both bodies is investigated. Following Mingori, a symmetrical configuration of the satellite with a mass-spring-dashpot damper on each part is considered, and some new stability results are derived by the application of the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. lt is indicated that the Routh-Hurwitz criterion gives only sufficient conditions of stability for the dual-spin satellite considered.
