Climatological characteristics of cloud cover - means, variances, structure functions - previously computed for five years are compared with the results of a new test cloud cover data set of one year period. The effects on the cloud field of the Alps, the Carpathian basin and the land-ocean interface, further the seasonal changes of the general circulation are well reflected. The new test data set is based upon digitized data of one morning as well as one afternoon picture per day. Therefore some results are also obtained of the cloud cover variations during the day. 相似文献

We describe the instrument design and detector development for MANES which has been selected to fly on the Mars 2003 Lander. Section 1 explains the need for the spectrometer in determining the increased risk of carcinogenesis for astronauts. Section 2 presents the instrument design including an outline drawing, a cross-sectional view and a detailed block diagram. Sections 3 and 4 describe the low and high energy detector components of the spectrometer and present responses to monoenergetic neutron beams. The radiation belts and plasma in the Earth’s magnetosphere pose hazards to satellite systems which restrict design and orbit options with a resultant impact on mission performance and cost. For decades the standard space environment specification used for spacecraft design has been provided by the NASA AE8 and AP8 trapped radiation belt models. There are well-known limitations on their performance, however, and the need for a new trapped radiation and plasma model has been recognized by the engineering community for some time. To address this challenge a new set of models, denoted AE9/AP9/SPM, for energetic electrons, energetic protons and space plasma has been developed. The new models offer significant improvements including more detailed spatial resolution and the quantification of uncertainty due to both space weather and instrument errors. Fundamental to the model design, construction and operation are a number of new data sets and a novel statistical approach which captures first order temporal and spatial correlations allowing for the Monte-Carlo estimation of flux thresholds for user-specified percentile levels (e.g., 50th and 95th) over the course of the mission. An overview of the model architecture, data reduction methods, statistics algorithms, user application and initial validation is presented in this paper. 相似文献

Extensive theoretical work has been performed on the equilibrium structure of tangential discontinuities (TDs) in collisionless plasmas. This paper reviews kinetic models based on steady-state solutions of the Vlasov equation. It is shown that most of the existing models are special cases of a generalized multi-species model. In this generalized model all particle populations -from both outer regions and from inside the layer — are described using a unique formalism for the velocity distribution functions. Because of their historical importance, the Harris and Sestero models are reviewed and deduced from the generalized model. The Lee and Kan model is also a special case of the generalized model. The generalized model, however, is also able to describe TDs with velocity shear and large angles of magnetic field rotation. Such a multi-species model with a large number of free parameters and different gradient scales illustrates many observable features of TDs, including their multiscale fine structure. Particular attention is paid to the magnetopause. Observed magnetopause crossings are simulated. The effects of the relative flow velocity and asymmetrical magnetic field profiles on the structure of the magnetopause and on its stability with respect to tearing perturbations are discussed. We also present calculations that demonstrate the potential of the generalized model in explaining the origin of discrete auroral arcs. Numerical simulations of solar wind TDs with heavy ions and a large spectrum of thicknesses are also feasible. This indicates that such a model is of fundamental importance for understanding the detailed structure of solar wind TDs, like those observed by the interplanetary spacecraft ULYSSES. The problems associated with the one-dimensional, time-independent Vlasov approach are discussed and a variational principle is suggested to reduce the arbitrariness resulting from the large number of free parameters. 相似文献

Despite the numerous modeling efforts of the past, our knowledge on the radiation-induced physical and chemical processes in Europa’s tenuous atmosphere and on the exchange of material between the moon’s surface and Jupiter’s magnetosphere remains limited. In lack of an adequate number of in situ observations, the existence of a wide variety of models based on different scenarios and considerations has resulted in a fragmentary understanding of the interactions of the magnetospheric ion population with both the moon’s icy surface and neutral gas envelope. Models show large discrepancy in the source and loss rates of the different constituents as well as in the determination of the spatial distribution of the atmosphere and its variation with time. The existence of several models based on very different approaches highlights the need of a detailed comparison among them with the final goal of developing a unified model of Europa’s tenuous atmosphere. The availability to the science community of such a model could be of particular interest in view of the planning of the future mission observations (e.g., ESA’s JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission, and NASA’s Europa Clipper mission). We review the existing models of Europa’s tenuous atmosphere and discuss each of their derived characteristics of the neutral environment. We also discuss discrepancies among different models and the assumptions of the plasma environment in the vicinity of Europa. A summary of the existing observations of both the neutral and the plasma environments at Europa is also presented. The characteristics of a global unified model of the tenuous atmosphere are, then, discussed. Finally, we identify needed future experimental work in laboratories and propose some suitable observation strategies for upcoming missions. 相似文献

We have surveyed solar wind plasma beta and field-aligned Alfvénic Mach number using Ulysses and Wind data. We show the characteristic
timescale and occurrence frequency of ‘magnetically dominated’ solar wind, whose interaction with a planetary magnetosphere
may produce a bow shock with multiple shock fronts. We discuss radial, latitudinal, and solar cycle effects.
