Bubble Technology Industries Inc. (BTI), with the support of the Canadian Space Agency, has finished the construction of the Canadian High-Energy Neutron Spectrometry System (CHENSS). This spectrometer is intended to measure the high energy neutron spectrum (approximately 1-100 MeV) encountered in spacecraft in low earth orbit. CHENSS is designed to fly aboard a US space shuttle and its scientific results should facilitate the prediction of neutron dose to astronauts in space from readings of different types of radiation dosimeters that are being used in various missions. 相似文献

This paper examines high resolution (ΔE/E = 0.15) photoelectron energy spectra from 10 eV to 1 keV, created by solar irradiances between 1.2 and 120 nm. The observations were made from the FAST satellite at ∼3000 km, equatorward of the auroral oval for the July–August, 2002 solar rotation. These data are compared with the solar irradiance observed by the Solar EUV Experiment (SEE) on the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite and fluxes calculated using the Field Line Interhemispheric Plasma (FLIP) code. The 41 eV photoelectron flux, which corresponds to solar EUV fluxes near 20 nm, shows a clear solar rotation variation in very good agreement with the EUV flux measurements. This offers the possibility that the 41 eV photoelectron flux could be used as a check on measured solar EUV fluxes near 20 nm. Because of unexpected noise, the solar rotation signal is not evident in the integral photoelectron flux between 156 and 1000 eV corresponding to EUV wavelengths between 0.1 and 7 nm measured by the SEE instrument. Examination of daily averaged photoelectron fluxes at energies between 25 and 500 eV show significant changes in the photoelectron spectra in response X and M class flares. The intensity of photoelectrons produced in this energy region is primarily due to two very narrow EUV wavelength regions at 2.3 and 3 nm driving Auger photoionization in O at 500 eV and N2 at ∼360 eV. Comparison of calculated and daily averaged electron fluxes shows that the HEUVAC model solar spectrum used in the FLIP code does not reproduce the observed variations in photoelectron intensity. In principle, the 21 discrete photoelectron energy channels could be used to improve the reliability of the solar EUV fluxes at 2.3 and 3 nm inferred from broad band observations. In practice, orbital biases in the way the data were accumulated and/or noise signals arising from natural and anthropogenic longitudinally restricted sources of ionization complicate the application of this technique. 相似文献

The effects of the cross correlation between user codes in an opticalcode-division multiple-access communication system are investigated. The system model is a multiaccess satellite repeater in which the uplink and downlink channels are direct-detection, optical-polarization modulation links. The error probability is derived in terms of the cross correlation between the intended and interfering user codes. It is shown that the system error rate can be minimized by using code sequences in which the normalized second moment of the cross correlation between codes is small. The signalto- noise ratio (SNR) on the uplink is shown to be proportional to 1/K while the SNR on the downlink is proportional to 1/K1/2, where K is the number of users which are simultaneously accessing the system. 相似文献

A theoretical and experimental study is carried out to determine the effect of buoyancy on the rate of spread of a cocurrent smolder reaction through a porous combustible material. Since buoyant forces are proportional to the product g(gi − g), they can be controlled experimentally by varying either the gravitational acceleration, g, or the density difference, gi − g. The latter approach was followed in the present work. Measurements are performed of the smolder spread rate through porous α-cellulose (0.83 void fraction) as a function of the ambient air pressure. The experiments are carried out in a pressure vessel for ambient pressures ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 atm. The rate of spread was obtained from the temperature histories of thermocouples placed at fixed intervals along the fuel centerline. The smolder velocity was found to increase as the ambient pressure was increased. Extinction was found to occur when the buoyancy forces could not overcome the drag forces, indicating that at least for the present experimental conditions transport by diffusion cannot, by itself, support the spread of a smolder reaction. This conclusion is particularly important for outer space conditions where gravity and consequently buoyancy could be negligible. In the analysis, which assumes one-dimensional processes, the transport equations are solved to give the smolder spread rate as a function of the inlet oxygen mass flux. This mass flux is then estimated by balancing buoyancy and drag forces. Assuming that the smolder chemical reaction is only weakly dependent on pressure, the analysis finally predicts a smolder velocity dependence of the form v Yoig2gi Pa2, i.e. is proportional to the ambient pressure squared. Good qualitative agreement is found between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results. 相似文献
