Large-Signal Transient Responses of a Switching Regulator

Analytical and experimental considerations of the large-signal transient responses of the buck-type switching regulator are described. The dynamic behavior under the large-signal condition is different from the small-signal operation because of the saturation characteristics of the pulsewidth modulator feedback controller. The effect of this nonlinearity is analyzed by dividing its operation into three modes. As a result the peak values of the inrush current and output voltage are obtained analytically both for the start-up and for the step change of the load condition.     

MTI Processing and Weibull-Distributed Ground Clutter

It is shown that the Weibull-distributed ground clutter obeys a Weibull distribution after processing by the double canceler moving target indicator (MTI).     

Leaky Coaxial Cable Resource Protection Sensor Performance Analysis

The performance of an RF intrusion detection system which uses a leaky coaxial cable sensor is analyzed. A simple cable sensor field model is assumed which gives good agreement between the computed response and observation. Expressions that describe the performance of several deployment configurations and receiver types are developed. The probability of detection and the zone of containment are computed and their uniformity is examined as a function of cable propagation constants.     

The Effect of a Pulsed Interference Signal on an Adaptive Array

The performance of a least mean square (LMS) adaptive array in the presence of a pulsed interference signal is examined. It is shown that a pulsed interference signal has two effects. First, it causes the array to modulate the desired signal envelope (but not its phase). Second, it causes the array output signal-to-interferenceplus-noise ratio (SINR) to vary with time. The desired signal modulation is evaluated as a function of signal arrival angles, powers and interference pulse-repetition frequency (PRF) and pulsewidth. It is shown that the signal modulation is small except when the interference arrives close to the desired signal. To evaluate the effect of the time-varying SINR, it is assumed that the array is used in a differential phase-shift keyed (DPSK) communication system. It is shown that the SINR variation causes a noticeable but not disastrous increase in the bit error probability.     

Instrument Failure Detection in Partially Observable Systems

Instrument failure detection using the dedicated observer scheme (DOS) depends on partial state observability through each instrument which is monitored. For instrument fault detection by the DOS technique, a quantitative measure of partial state observability is established for each instrument and used to determine a necessary condition on the output structure of the system. This measure, called the internal redundancy of the instrument, indicates the complexity of the logic required for failure detection, and it also indicates where some hardware redundancy can be introduced into the system to improve the fault detection capability of the DOS. The principles developed are applied to a simulation of the pitch axis autopilot of the A7 jet aircraft.

Asymptotic Reproducibility in Nonlinear Systems and Attitude Control of Gyrostat

A control law is presented for asymptotic function reproducibility in a class of nonlinear-systems such that the output of the system asympotically tends to a given function. The controller consists of a prefilter and a servocompensator. Based on this result, a nonlinear feedback control law for the attitude control of a satellite containing symmetric rotors, in a circular orbit, is derived. In the closed-loop system, given trajectories of pitch, yaw, and roll angles are asymptotically followed, and set point control of attitude is accomplished. Digital simulation results are presented to show the capability of the nonlinear controller.     

Ambiguity Functions for Quadratic Phase-Coded Pulse Trains

The matched filter ambiguity function is presented for a burst waveform composed of repeated subbursts, each one of which consists of N pulses in which the phase is varied quadratically from pulse to pulse. The resulting ambiguity function exhibits small residual ambiguities along the delay axis separated by the reciprocal of the pulse repetition frequency (PRF). A cross-ambiguity function is derived which reduces these ambiguities to zero amplitude. A third cross-ambiguity function is presented for a receiver matched to a generalized Hamming weighted repeated quadratic burst. The location in the delay/Doppler plane of the waveform ambiguities for these waveforms is compared with that of an uncoded pulse burst.     

Design Rules for Adaptive Arrays

The concepts of "equivalent linear arrays" and "minimum effective spacing" can be used to simplify the analysis of planar adaptive arrays. The resulting design rules permit the rapid determination of array configurations without the need for computer modeling.
