The Effect of Aircraft Lateral Dynamics on Aircraft Positioning Accuracy When Using Loran-C

The dynamics of an aircraft following a fixed course line using Loran-C for position fixing are shown to interact with Loran-C receiver dynamics to result in cross-track aircraft positioning errors that are smaller than cross-track Loran receiver errors. In a particular case considered, this error reduction is on the order of 50 percent.     

Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Observations

This paper discusses the status of observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. The first detections of primary anisotropies in the CMB, achieved about 10 years ago, boosted a large number of ground-based and balloon-borne experiments that have delineated the CMB angular power spectrum up to spherical harmonic multipole l1000. A wealth of information on cosmological parameters is being revealed by these measurements. Very recently, the positions and amplitudes of the first and second peak in the power spectrum have been determined providing strong support to inflationary models with adiabatic primordial density perturbations. A total density equal to the critical value, and baryonic density consistent with Big Bang nucleosynthesis are the first results emerging from the current CMB data. Future experiments on ground (mainly interferometers), in balloons and from space (MAP and Planck missions) have the potential to constrain more than 10 cosmological parameters with high precision.     

The effect of head-down tilt on brain potentials related to visual attention

To study the possible effect of simulated weightlessness on brain function state, the brain event-related potentials (ERPs) in a simple visual selective response task were compared between HDT and HUT in 9 normal subjects. The results were: The Target(T) and non-Target(NT) flash signals both induced significant slow positive potentials which were supposed to related to the attention state; the amplitude of the positive potentials in frontal regions decreased significantly especially for NT-ERPs during HDT comprared with that during HUT. The data reported provide new evidence indicating that more attention should be paid on the brain function study during space flight.     

Electron precipitation in the auroral zone

The present experimental knowledge of electron precipitation in the auroral zone is summarized, using observations primarily from riometer, balloon, rocket and satellite studies. This includes the association of electron precipitation events with aurora, magnetic disturbances as well as temporal and spatial aspects of the particle bombardment.     

Considerations for the Short-Term Stability of Frequency Multipliers

The effects of frequency multiplication circuits on the short-term stability of an oscillator system are analyzed. The short-term stability of real components such as varactor multipliers are compared to the short-term stability of an ?ideal? frequency multiplier which maintains the stability of the basic oscillator. In addition, it is shown that positive feedback like that used in a synchronized oscillator, while useful for tracking, degrades short-term stability.     

Gasodynamic characteristics of a combustion chamber in the integrated power plant with an asymmetric air intake

The results of experimental investigations of gasodynamic characteristics of a combustion chamber model in the integrated power plant (IPP) with an asymmetric air intake are presented. The influence of an angle of air supply into the chamber model on hydraulic losses and the flow structure is shown at different air flowrates, relative values of the minimal flow section area of the feeding air intake pipes, under changes of the flowrate of gas simulating gas generation products and geometric model parameters. A technique for measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide simulating IPP gas generation products in the combustion chamber air flow and the results of experimental investigations of a mixture formation process in the combustion chamber model are described.
