The IMPACT SWEA instruments on board the twin STEREO spacecraft detect the solar wind electrons with energies between 1 and 2000 eV. The instruments provide 3-dimensional velocity distributions, pitch angle distributions and solar wind properties at two vantage points in the ecliptic at 1 AU. A few days after launch suppression of the low energy solar wind electrons was detected, which makes data analysis challenging and causes a significant loss of information below 50 eV. This paper describes the methods used to both understand the nature of the problem and to recover the most information about the low energy solar wind electrons from the measured datasets. These include numerical simulations, in-flight calibration results, and data reconstruction methods that allow the calculation of solar wind parameter proxies with minor limitations. 相似文献

In airline service the reliability of a system is more than the confirmed failures for the system; it is the total removal experience of the system. Thus, the reliability of a system lies not only in the piece part failure rates, but also in the capability to verify and isolate failures. The application of digital technology brings several significant reliability improvements to automatic flight control systems (AFCS) when compared to contemporary analog systems. These advantages are demonstrated by the experience of the digital air data computer (DADC) of the DC-10 and the digital AFCS of the JA-37 Viggen. Experience with this equipment is reviewed, and the results are interpreted in terms of projections for airline DAFCS reliability. The digital system built-in test implemented by a stored program and the central processor gives a system integrity and dispatch reliability unequaled by analog systems. This high-integrity self-test reduces removal rates by giving line personnel a trustworthy tool and more complete automatic test processes for verifying maintenance actions. Digital circuit technology is directly suitable to largescale integrated circuits (LSIC) which reduce piece part counts and improve LRU reliability. Digital circuits are less subject to drift and the attendant difficulty to detect failures. These factors, coupled with the inherent high-integrity self-test, provide the basis for a significant improvement in reliability by the use of a digital automatic flight control system. 相似文献

The five identical THEMIS Spacecraft, launched in February 2007, carry two magnetometers on each probe, one DC fluxgate (FGM) and one AC search coil (SCM). Due to the small size of the THEMIS probes, and the short length of the magnetometer booms, magnetic cleanliness was a particularly complex task for this medium sized mission. The requirements leveled on the spacecraft and instrument design required a detailed approach, but one that did not hamper the development of the probes during their short design, production and testing phase. In this paper we describe the magnetic cleanliness program’s requirements, design guidelines, program implementation, mission integration and test philosophy and present test results, and mission on-orbit performance. 相似文献

In an attempt to explain the influence of space processing on the microstructure of MnBiBi, eutectic mixtures were directionally solidified with a sudden change of translation rate. The MnBi fiber spacing was able to adapt to the changing freezing rate as predicted by heat transfer computations. Thus the microstructure adapts more rapidly than the freezing rate could be changed in the present experiments. 相似文献

Established procedures of linear, quadratic, Gaussian optimal estimation and control are developed and interpreted for their application ion to the problem of attitude control of spacecraft with dycallyamially significant elastic appendages. Results are presented both in general terms and for specific application to a solar electric spacecraft. aft. Comparisons are made between alternative coordinattems, systems, and a realistic range of design parameters is considered. For single axis control, system evaluation is accomplished by simulation of a fifteenth-order spacecraft plant with alternative second-order, fourth-order, and sixth-order constant gain estimators. THEMIS was launched on February 17, 2007 to determine the trigger and large-scale evolution of substorms. During the first seven months of the mission the five satellites coasted near their injection orbit to avoid differential precession in anticipation of orbit placement, which started in September 2007 and led to a commencement of the baseline mission in December 2007. During the coast phase the probes were put into a string-of-pearls configuration at 100 s of km to 2 RE along-track separations, which provided a unique view of the magnetosphere and enabled an unprecedented dataset in anticipation of the first tail season. In this paper we describe the first THEMIS substorm observations, captured during instrument commissioning on March 23, 2007. THEMIS measured the rapid expansion of the plasma sheet at a speed that is commensurate with the simultaneous expansion of the auroras on the ground. These are the first unequivocal observations of the rapid westward expansion process in space and on the ground. Aided by the remote sensing technique at energetic particle boundaries and combined with ancillary measurements and MHD simulations, they allow determination and mapping of space currents. These measurements show the power of the THEMIS instrumentation in the tail and the radiation belts. We also present THEMIS Flux Transfer Events (FTE) observations at the magnetopause, which demonstrate the importance of multi-point observations there and the quality of the THEMIS instrumentation in that region of space. 相似文献

The concentrations of neutral hydrogen within the atmosphere of Venus are investigated for the period 1979–1980. During this period, the planet made nearly three orbits about the Sun, so that nearly three complete diurnal cycles were observed from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO). Values of n(H) are derived from in-situ ion and neutral composition measurements from the Orbiter Ion Mass Spectrometer (OIMS) and the Orbiter Neutral Mass Spectrometer (ONMS) using a charge exchange relationship involving O+, H+, O and CO2. The dawn bulge in the diurnal distribution of n(H), reported from the first diurnal cycle by Brinton et al., is found to persist with n(H) peaking at levels near 2 - 5 × 107/cm3 at altitudes below 165 km. At peak levels, the bulge exhibits a concentration ratio up to 400/1 relative to dayside values. Large day to day variations of up to a factor of five in n(H) are frequently encountered, and are attributed to perturbations induced by the solar wind interaction. These short term variations, plus a suggestion of some local time variation in the bulk location, make precise assessment of interannual variations in the n(H) difficult. Between the first diurnal cycle in early 1979 and the third in mid 1980, the decline in solar euv flux was of the order of 10% or less. Allowing for uncertainties due to short term variations, no clear evidence is found for an interannual variation in the hydrogen concentrations. 相似文献
