The design of a novel phased array panel that provides the L-band satellite to ground links for the IRIDIUM global communications system is presented. Key components and aspects of this phased array antenna are discussed, including the beamforming architecture, radiated intermodulation products, the patch radiators, and the T/R module. The potential role of clay minerals in the abiotic origin of life has been the subject of ongoing debate for the past several decades. At issue are the clay minerals found in a class of meteorites known as carbonaceous chondrites. These clay minerals are the product of aqueous alteration of anhydrous mineral phases, such as olivine and orthopyroxene, that are often present in the chondrules. Moreover, there is a strong correlation in the occurrence of clay minerals and the presence of polar organic molecules. It has been shown in laboratory experiments at low temperature and ambient pressure that polar organic molecules, such as the oxalate found in meteorites, can catalyze the crystallization of clay minerals. In this study, we show that oxalate is a robust catalyst in the crystallization of saponite, an Al- and Mg-rich, trioctahedral 2:1 layer silicate, from a silicate gel at 60°C and ambient pressure. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis of the saponite treated with octadecylammonium (n(C)=18) cations revealed the presence of 2:1 layer structures that have variable interlayer charge. The crystallization of these differently charged 2:1 layer silicates most likely occurred independently. The fact that 2:1 layer silicates with variable charge formed in the same gel has implications for our understanding of the origin of life, as these 2:1 clay minerals most likely replicate by a mechanism of template-catalyzed polymerization and transmit the charge distribution from layer to layer. If polar organic molecules like oxalate can catalyze the formation of clay-mineral crystals, which in turn promote clay microenvironments and provide abundant adsorption sites for other organic molecules present in solution, the interaction among these adsorbed molecules could lead to the polymerization of more complex organic molecules like RNA from nucleotides on early Earth.  相似文献

The problems of attitude control of a Skylark rocket are considered on the specific occasion of a night flight during which, of course, the sun was not available as a pointing vector. Pointing was achieved using magnetometers, while roll control was obtained using a suitably placed moon sensor. During the years 1996–2000 solar activity has been gradually rising and is now close to maximum. At the same time the Ulysses spacecraft has performed a north to south traverse of the low latitude regions of the heliosphere and is now once again travelling through high southerly latitudes. We show some examples and report on the occurence rates of transient solar wind disturbances which have been identified by their magnetic field signatures. ‘Magnetic clouds’ remain more common at low (compared to high) latitudes despite the rise in solar activity. However, more events were observed at high latitudes than at solar minimum. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This paper investigates the problem of tracking targets at a low elevation angle in the presence of specular and diffuse multipath. Quantitative estimates are derived of the elevation angles, and hence, range, at which targets of specified height can be accurately tracked. A parametric approach is followed in which the long-standing uncertainty of how terrain forward-scatters at low grazing angles is recognized at the outset. Particular attention is given to the effects of target motion which permit rejection of multipath components falling outside the radar tracker's passband. The results are presented in a form which can be readily applied to a spectrum of radar trackers with differing requirements. The limited experimental ental data on the specular and diffuse scattering parameters for several generic types of terrain are applied to estimate the significance of multipath under different situations and to indicate specific areas in which additional experimental data are critically needed.  相似文献

A mechanism by which an aircraft wake can interact strongly with the electromagnetic radiation present in an active elevated anomalous refractivity region (active feuillet) is analyzed. The aircraft wake structure, assumed to consist of twin contrarotating vortices plus entrained irrotational gas, trailing behind the wings of typical large aircraft is shown to be capable of descending a distance of approximately 3 wing span distances and attaining a length of the order of 10 km, prior to instability-induced disruption. The parcel of air such a descending coherent wake structure can convey into an active feuillet is demonstrated to alter significantly the local refractive index of the duct and induce substantial radiation spillage. The general characteristics of the electromagnetic radiation produced by this interaction process (i.e., scattering by diaphanous objects) is described.  相似文献

The fundamental properties of 24 Galactic WN stars are determined from analyses of their optical, UV and IR spectra using sophisticated model atmosphere codes (Hillier, 1987, 1990). Terminal velocities, stellar luminosities, temperatures, mass loss rates and abundances of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are determined. Stellar parameters are derived using diagnostic lines and interstellar reddenings found from fitting theoretical continua to observed energy distributions.Our results confirm that the parameters of WN stars span a large range in temperature (T*=30–90,000 K), luminosity (log L*/L=4.8–5.9), mass loss (M=0.9–12×10–5 M yr–1) and terminal velocity (v =630–3300 km s–1). Hydrogen abundances are determined, and found to be low in WNEw and WNEs stars (<15% by mass) and considerable in most WNL stars (1–50%). Metal abundances are also determined with the nitrogen content found to lie in the range N/He=1–5×10–3 (by number) for all subtypes, and C/N 0.02 in broad agreement with the predictions of Maeder (1991). Enhanced O/N and O/C is found for HD 104994 (WN3p) suggesting a peculiar evolutionary history. Our results suggest that single WNL+abs stars may represent an evolutionary stage immediately after the Of phase. Since some WNE stars exist with non-negligible hydrogen contents (e.g. WR136) evolution may proceed directly from WNL+abs to WNE in some cases, circumventing the luminous blue variable (LBV) or red supergiant (RSG) stage.  相似文献

Spaceflight experiments involving biological specimens face unique challenges with regard to the on orbit harvest and preservation of material for later ground-based analyses. Preserving plant material for gene expression analyses requires that the tissue be prepared and stored in a manner that maintains the integrity of RNA. The liquid preservative RNAlater (Ambion) provides an effective alternative to conventional freezing strategies, which are limited or unavailable in current spaceflight experiment scenarios. The spaceflight use of RNAlater is enabled by the Kennedy space center fixation tube (KFT), hardware designed to provide the necessary containment of fixatives during the harvest and stowage of biological samples in space. Pairing RNAlater with the KFT system provides a safe and effective strategy for preserving plant material for subsequent molecular analyses, a strategy that has proven effective in several spaceflight experiments. Possible spaceflight scenarios for the use of RNAlater and KFTs are explored and discussed.  相似文献
