In light of assessing the habitability of Mars, we examine the impact of the magnetic field on the atmosphere. When there
is a magnetic field, the atmosphere is protected from erosion by solar wind. The magnetic field ensures the maintenance of
a dense atmosphere, necessary for liquid water to exist on the surface of Mars. We also examine the impact of the rotation
of Mars on the magnetic field. When the magnetic field of Mars ceased to exist (about 4 Gyr ago), atmospheric escape induced
by solar wind began. We consider scenarios which could ultimately lead to a decrease of atmospheric pressure to the presently
observed value of 7 mbar: a much weaker early martian magnetic field, a late onset of the dynamo, and high erosion rates of

Satellite observations near the magnetopause and within the magnetosheath revealed the existence of some structures characterised by specific magnetic field and plasma signatures. They have been called “Flux Transfer Events”. One of the models of FTEs is a reconnected fluxtube, extending from the inner magnetosphere into the magnetosheath. ELF-ULF waves are often observed in together with other FTE's signatures. Wideband emissions are associated with the boundaries of FTEs with characteristic maxima at lower hybrid and ion-cyclotron frequencies. They provide a tool for better timing of the events. These emissions might also be related to the reconnection process. Observations of FTE's by Prognoz-8 satellite are presented in our paper. Wave signatures of the FTEs are described. Various mechanisms of generation of the emissions by instabilities depending on local plasma conditions are discussed along with non-local aspects of such waves. Numerical solutions of the dispersion equation for the typical conditions in FTEs are presented. Possible relation of these waves to the reconnection process are discussed. 相似文献

Atmospheric elements at all levels from the surface to the Middle Atmosphere show a probable association with the 11-year solar cycle in northern winter, which can be observed only if the data are grouped according to the phase of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. As the correlations are often of opposite sign in the East and West phase of the QBO, the correlation coefficients are mostly small when one uses as full time series of an atmospheric element. The spatial patterns of the correlations resemble well-known teleconnection patterns. The sparse data and short series on the Southern Hemisphere permit only a limited investigation. We report on the progress of a search for precursors that have direct physical connections to the start of subsequent solar flares. Approximate analytical solutions are established for the attitude rates and angles of a rigid body subjected to a constant body-fixed torque. The perturbation solutions obtained are valid for any arbitrary inertia parameters. The small parameter is defined as the ratio between representative transverse rotation rate and the spin or scan rate. The results should be useful for quickly evaluating the attitude response of a spin-stabilised or scanning spacecraft to a variety of torque inputs. The applicability of the theory is illustrated by means of practical examples such as the spin-down due to rate coupling of ESA's GEOS spacecraft and the prediction of the attitude drift of the HIPPARCOS satellite during payload initialisation. Hard limiters, followed by a D-type flip-flop as a digital-signal-polarity detector, are very effective receiver/phase detectors for low frequency (LF) and very low frequency (VLF) navigation receivers. However the performance not only depends on the signal quality, but also on the specifications of the hard limiter and the flip-flop. Analysis of the tracking accuracy is given as a function of the dc offsets of the limiter and the flip-flop, the linear gain of the limiter, the signal-to-noise ratios of one or more input signals, and the power consumption of the limiter. An experimental study of the spatio-temporal evolution of the transition in a shock-tube wall boundary-layer has been carried out with thin film heat transfer gauges placed all along the tube. The results show that the transition appears, for small initial pressures, under the form of turbulent spots which are periodically created: these spots grow and are transported roughly at a velocity slightly smaller than the inviscid flow, regressing towards the contact surface. For higher initial pressures, a continuous transitional front is created which moves at about the same velocity as the shock-wave. These results seem to explain previous and often contradictory interpretations based on quasi-punctual measurements but the fact remains that the characterization criteria of the transition in unsteady boundary layers are still to be studied. 相似文献

Sensors like radar or sonar usually produce data on the basis of a single frame of observation: target detections. The detection performance is described by quantities like detection probability Pd and false alarm density f. A different task of detection is formation of tracks of targets unknown in number from data of multiple consecutive frames of observation. This leads to quantities which are of a higher level of abstraction: extracted tracks. This again is a detection process. Under benign conditions (high Pd, low f and well separated targets) conventional methods of track initiation are recommended to solve a simple task. However, under hard conditions the process of track extraction is known to be difficult. We here concentrate on the case of well separated targets and derive an optimal combinatorial method which can be used under hard operating conditions. The method relates to MHT (multiple hypothesis tracking), uses a sequential likelihood ratio test and derives benefit from processing signal strength information. The performance of the track extraction method is described by parameters such as detection probability and false detection rate on track level, while Pd and f are input parameters which relate to the signal-to-noise interference ratio (SNIR), the clutter density, and the threshold set for target detection.
