Many widely used methods for describing and understanding the magnetosphere are based on balance conditions for quasi-static equilibrium (this is particularly true of the classical theory of magnetosphere/ionosphere coupling, which in addition presupposes the equilibrium to be stable); they may therefore be of limited applicability for dealing with time-variable phenomena as well as for determining cause-effect relations. The large-scale variability of the magnetosphere can be produced both by changing external (solar-wind) conditions and by non-equilibrium internal dynamics. Its developments are governed by the basic equations of physics, especially Maxwell’s equations combined with the unique constraints of large-scale plasma; the requirement of charge quasi-neutrality constrains the electric field to be determined by plasma dynamics (generalized Ohm’s law) and the electric current to match the existing curl of the magnetic field. The structure and dynamics of the ionosphere/magnetosphere/solar-wind system can then be described in terms of three interrelated processes: (1) stress equilibrium and disequilibrium, (2) magnetic flux transport, (3) energy conversion and dissipation. This provides a framework for a unified formulation of settled as well as of controversial issues concerning, e.g., magnetospheric substorms and magnetic storms. 相似文献

The IMPACT SWEA instruments on board the twin STEREO spacecraft detect the solar wind electrons with energies between 1 and 2000 eV. The instruments provide 3-dimensional velocity distributions, pitch angle distributions and solar wind properties at two vantage points in the ecliptic at 1 AU. A few days after launch suppression of the low energy solar wind electrons was detected, which makes data analysis challenging and causes a significant loss of information below 50 eV. This paper describes the methods used to both understand the nature of the problem and to recover the most information about the low energy solar wind electrons from the measured datasets. These include numerical simulations, in-flight calibration results, and data reconstruction methods that allow the calculation of solar wind parameter proxies with minor limitations. 相似文献

The technology of gallium arsenide field-effect transistors has advanced to the point where these devices can serve to replace traveling wave tubes in spaceborne communication transponders.This paper describes interim results of a C-band FET amplifier which is currently being developed by RCA for INTELSAT. The FETA is designed to provide a 6-W output with an efficiency greater than 25%, and a backed-off 1.5-W output level with low distortion and efficiency of 13%.The third order intermodulation () of a FETA at saturation is typically 15 dB as compared to 10 dB for a TWTA. At 10 dB input power back-off the improves to 24 dB while that of a TWTA is only 16 dB.We fabricated a breadboard 5-W FETA which demonstrates that a linear operation can be achieved at an output level of 1.5 W with 10% efficiency. By contrast the efficiency of a typical 5 W TWTA in the same linear region is no greater than 3–5%. 相似文献

It is the purpose of this review to summarize and discuss recent research done in the field of particle propagation in the heliosphere. Several lines of approach have been followed to treat this problem. As a starting point the different forms of the transport equation are discussed. Quasi-Linear Theory (QLT) relates the power contained in fluctuations of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) to the transport coefficients of energetic particles, an outline of the basic results of this theory is presented followed by a discussion of subsequent corrections made to the original formulation with an emphasis in recent developments where the effects of wave polarization, its propagation respect to the solar wind and the dissipation of power at large frequencies have been taken into account. The numerical approach using test particle trajectory integrations to obtain transport coefficients based on in situ satellite measureents is also discussed. It is well known that the determination of the particles mean free path for solar particle events by alternative methods leads to conflicting results, corrections made to original QLT are attempts to bridge the gap. Determination of the transport parameters from different lines of approach in a comparative basis have been done recently by calculating power spectra of IMF measured at the time solar particles were detected on the same spaceprobe, and performing numerical simulations with equivalent IMF data. Some of the results of such studies point to the solution of the conflicting determinations of the mean free path which has existed for nearly 30 years. An assesment of the present situation in this respect is given. Numerical determinations of transport parameters in the outer heliosphere are also reviewed and its consequences for solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays discussed. JIRAM is an imager/spectrometer on board the Juno spacecraft bound for a polar orbit around Jupiter. JIRAM is composed of IR imager and spectrometer channels. Its scientific goals are to explore the Jovian aurorae and the planet’s atmospheric structure, dynamics and composition. This paper explains the characteristics and functionalities of the instrument and reports on the results of ground calibrations. It discusses the main subsystems to the extent needed to understand how the instrument is sequenced and used, the purpose of the calibrations necessary to determine instrument performance, the process for generating the commanding sequences, the main elements of the observational strategy, and the format of the scientific data that JIRAM will produce. 相似文献

This paper discusses the results of an analytic study of the feasibility of using microwave radiometry as a technique for navigation data sensing in Army aircraft. The study included a review of Army aircraft characteristics and navigation requirements. Various means of sensing passively aircraft velocity, altitude, and velocity-altitude ratio were considered. While there appears to be no practical method for direct measurement of either velocity or altitude separately, it does appear possible to measure velocity-altitude ratio by comparing radiometric signals received from the terrain along the aircraft ground track. When combined with a radar altimeter, such a sensor could yield navigation data compatible with Army aircraft requirements. Microwave radiometry may also be the basis for direction sensing (to known landmarks) in high-flying aircraft or satellites. 相似文献

Both sensors of the SEIS instrument (VBBs and SPs) are mounted on the mechanical leveling system (LVL), which has to ensure a level placement on the Martian ground under currently unknown local conditions, and provide the mechanical coupling of the seismometers to the ground. We developed a simplified analytical model of the LVL structure in order to reproduce its mechanical behavior by predicting its resonances and transfer function. This model is implemented numerically and allows to estimate the effects of the LVL on the data recorded by the VBBs and SPs on Mars. The model is validated through comparison with the horizontal resonances (between 35 and 50 Hz) observed in laboratory measurements. These modes prove to be highly dependent of the ground horizontal stiffness and torque. For this reason, an inversion study is performed and the results are compared with some experimental measurements of the LVL feet’s penetration in a martian regolith analog. This comparison shows that the analytical model can be used to estimate the elastic ground properties of the InSight landing site. Another application consists in modeling the 6 sensors on the LVL at their real positions, also considering their sensitivity axes, to study the performances of the global SEIS instrument in translation and rotation. It is found that the high frequency ground rotation can be measured by SEIS and, when compared to the ground acceleration, can provide ways to estimate the phase velocity of the seismic surface waves at shallow depths. Finally, synthetic data from the active seismic experiment made during the HP3 penetration and SEIS rotation noise are compared and used for an inversion of the Rayleigh phase velocity. This confirms the perspectives for rotational seismology with SEIS which will be developed with the SEIS data acquired during the commissioning phase after landing. 相似文献

Four types of optimal solutions are demonstrated to exist for transfers (time of flight is not fixed) between close near-circular
coplanar orbits. One solution is realized with the help of fixed orientation of the propulsion system (PS) along a transversal
in the orbital coordinate system. Another is reached at fixed orientation of the PS in the inertial coordinate system. The
third and fourth types of solutions change the PS orientation in the process of executing the maneuver. Regions of existence
are established for all types of solutions, and algorithms for determination of parameters of these maneuvers are suggested.
The algorithms were used to calculate parameters of the maneuvers of transfer from a launching orbit to a working Sun-synchronous
