Following a long period of consensus on the storm-substorm relationship, a dispute on this topic has emerged in recent years. The importance of substorms for the buildup of the terrestrial ring current, which is the major element of magnetic storms, has been questioned in several studies. This paper is an effort to assess the “fine structure” of the storm-substorm relationship, by investigating the correlation between the changes in Dst and the substorm-associated O+ enhancements in the inner magnetosphere during the storm main phase. For this purpose we use energetic ion measurements from the Magnetospheric Ion Composition Spectrometer (MICS) on board the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES), and the newly produced high-resolution (5-min) Dst index for the intense storm of June 5, 1991. Substorm signatures from both MICS measurements and ground magnetometers correlate well with changes in the Dst decrease rate. This implies a significant influence of substorm occurrence on storm dynamics.  相似文献

The CEPPAD Imaging Proton Spectrometer on the POLAR spacecraft has proven to perform very well as an Energetic Neutral (ENA) atom imager, despite the fact that it was designed primarily for measuring energetic ions in-situ. ENAs emitted from the ring current can be detected during storm- as well as quiet-time conditions and can be monitored continuously for many hours at a time when Polar is situated in the polar cap. In addition, we are able to routinely detect ‘bursts’ of ENA emissions in response to substorm-associated ion injections. In this paper, we present ENA images of a single such event together with global auroral imager data from the POLAR VIS instrument. LANL geosynchronous energetic particle data, and ground magnetic Pi2 data in order to establish that such bursts are indeed caused by substorm injections.  相似文献

Land information from remote sensing satellites contributes substantially to the quality of decision making in development activities. However, participation in space-related activities by developing countries has historically been low in part due to the high costs and advanced technology inputs required. The paper discusses several technological and socio-political trends which now offer increasingly affordable opportunities for developing countries to increase their level of participation in activities related to satellite remote sensing of earth resources. Benefiting from these opportunities requires appropriate encouragement and support from national governments.  相似文献
