The swimming behaviour of Paramecium is affected by media of various specific gravities. At 1g, the negative gravitaxis of Paramecium virtually disappears in solutions the specific gravity of which is about the same as that of the organism (1.04). In solutions with a higher specific gravity (1.08), Paramecium becomes positively gravitactic. We recorded the swimming tracks of Paramecium in these media on videotape before, during and after free-falls. The records show that the density-dependent differences in the swimming behaviour disappeared immediately following the onset of the free-fall. The recorded tracks and distributions of cells in the experimental chambers were compared with computer-simulated traces and distributions based on gravitactic and gravikinetic models proposed for Paramecium. Our preliminary analysis favors a novel gravitactic mechanism involving modification of the ciliary movement The drop shaft at the Japan Microgravity Center, Hokkaido (JAMIC) was used for the free-fall experiments.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper discusses embedding in a two-dimensional plane a symbolic representation for spatial data using the simple objects, points (P), lines (L), circuits (C), and areas (A). We have proposed PLCA as a new framework for a qualitative spatial reasoning. In a PLCA expression, the entire figure is represented in a form in which all the objects are related. We investigate the conditions for two-dimensional realizability of a PLCA expression, and derive the relation that the numbers of objects in a PLCA expression should have. In this process, we use the well-known Euler's formula. We also give an algorithm for drawing the figure of the PLCA expression that satisfies this condition in a two-dimensional plane and prove its correctness. The algorithm generates a quantitative expression from qualitative expression.  相似文献

Inactivation of B. subtilis spores has been studied using accelerated He, C, N, O and Ne ions. The energy dependence of the inactivation cross sections for heavy ions was very weak and the mean cross sections for carbon ions (0.6-4.7 MeV/amu), nitrogen ions (0.6-4.1 MeV/amu), oxygen ions (0.8-1.1 MeV/amu), and neon ions (2.2-3.7 MeV/amu) were found to be about 0.22, 0.23, 0.26, and 0.33 micrometer2 , respectively. Analysis was carried out along lines similar to Katz's target theory but the parameters were chosen so that they have an experimental basis.  相似文献

W-reactivation (WR) and W-mutagenesis (WM) were observed after irradiation of phage chi X 174 with He and N ions (4.6 MeV/amu). The relative amount of phage RFI DNA (RARFI) extracted from the infected cells was determined by agarose gel electrophoresis. It was found that RARFI was increased by prior UV-irradiation of host cells and this increase corresponded to the efficiency of WR.  相似文献

The orbital angular velocity of a stationary satellite expresses the perturbation in the orbit of the satellite. The minimum variation in direction of this velocity corresponds to the minimum fuel consumption rate to maintain a stationary satellite within allocated bounds. The directional variation of the orbital angular velocity is minimized by maintaining the ascending node of the orbit near the direction of the vernal equinox. The direction of the ascending node to maintain the orbit with minimum fuel consumption rate is given over the 18.6 yr nodal period of the moon. Over that period the inclination variation of the orbit and the angular speed proportional to the necessary fuel consumption rate to maintain the orbit are also given. An example of fuel consumption is given with a comparison with fuel savings over the standard stationkeeping method. The method here is applicable to the geostationary communication satellite, UHF broadcasting satellite, solar power satellite, etc.  相似文献

Liquid-propellant rocket engines are widely used all over the world, thanks to their high performances, in particular high thrust-to-weight ratio. The present paper presents a general panorama of liquid propulsion as a contribution of the IAF Advanced Propulsion Prospective Group.After a brief history of its past development in the different parts of the world, the current status of liquid propulsion, the currently observed trends, the possible areas of future improvement and a summarized road map of future developments are presented. The road map includes a summary of the liquid propulsion status presented in the “Year in review 2007” of Aerospace America.Although liquid propulsion is often seen as a mature technology with few areas of potential improvement, the requirements of an active commercial market and a renewed interest for space exploration has led to the development of a family of new engines, with more design margins, simpler to use and to produce associated with a wide variety of thrust and life requirements.  相似文献

In the Earth’s magnetotail, Japanese Moon orbiter Kaguya repeatedly encountered the plasmoid or plasma sheet. The encounters were characterized by the low energy ion signatures including lobe cold ions, cold ion acceleration in the plasma sheet-lobe boundaries, and hot plasma sheet ions or fast flowing ions associated with plasmoids. Different from the previous observations made in the magnetotail by the GEOTAIL spacecraft, the ions were affected by the existence of the Moon. On the dayside of the Moon, tailward flowing cold ions and their acceleration were observed. However, on the night side, tailward flowing cold ions could not be observed since the Moon blocked them. In stead, ion acceleration by the spacecraft potential and the electron beam accelerated by the potential difference between lunar surface and spacecraft were simultaneously observed. These electron and ion data enabled us to determine the night side lunar surface potential and spacecraft potential only from the observed data for the first time.  相似文献

We investigated the in-orbit performance of a high-performance on-board computer developed with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology in terms of its performance during the occurrence of single event effects. The processor worked and performed successfully both under normal and under solar flare conditions in 800 km altitude polar orbit. During a solar flare, the occurrence of single events increased by a factor of more than four compared with normal conditions. The area where single events occurred during the solar flare spread to the polar region, whereas normally they are limited to the region of South-Atlantic anomalies (SAA). Our results suggest that the performance of our COTS processor is sufficient for future space applications.  相似文献

We investigated properties of four isolated giant elliptical galaxies with extended X-ray halo using ASCA data. The derived size of X-ray halo, X-ray luminosity, and gravitational mass of the dark halo are unusually large those of X-ray halo of a single galaxy, but are typical for X-ray halos of groups and poor clusters of galaxies. The measured temperatures and abundances of the X-ray halo gas in these galaxies are also similar to those of the groups and poor clusters. Based on these results we identified these galaxies as “isolated X-ray overluminous elliptical galaxy” (IOLEG). The radial profiles of dark halo in these objects were derived from X-ray data. It is found that some are similar to those of compact groups while others are the same as those of normal ellipticals. The dark halos of lOLEGs are thus indistinguishable from those of groups (and poor clusters), which appears to be consistent with a widely believed idea that lOLEGs are a product of dynamical evolution of a compact group. However, mass-to-light ratios of IOLEGs (M200/LB  100–1000) are far greater than those of Hickson compact groups M200/LB  40–60). Since it is hard to consider that total optical luminosity of a compact group decreases by an order of magnitude in the course of dynamical evolution, such difference in the observed mass-to-light ratio between IOLEGs and Hickson compact groups strongly suggests that most IOLEGs have not evolved from compact groups which are observed at present.  相似文献

We reported previously that emerged amoebae of Dictyostelium (D.) discoideum grew, aggregated and differentiated to fruiting bodies with normal morphology in space. Here, we investigated the effects of space radiation and/or microgravity on the number, viability, kinetics of germination, growth rate and mutation frequency of spores formed in space in a radiation-sensitive strain, gamma s13, and the parental strain, NC4. In gamma s13, there were hardly spores in the fruiting bodies formed in space. In NC4, we found a decrease in the number of spores, a delay in germination of the spores and delayed start of cell growth of the spores formed in space when compared to the ground control. However, the mutation frequency of the NC4 spores formed in space was similar to that of the ground control. We conclude that the depression of spore formation might be induced by microgravity and/or space radiation through the depression of some stage(s) of DNA repair during cell differentiation in the slime mold.  相似文献
