Large uncertainties are associated with estimates of equivalent dose and cancer risk for crews of long-term space missions. Biological dosimetry in astronauts is emerging as a useful technique to compare predictions based on quality factors and risk coefficients with actual measurements of biological damage in-flight. In the present study, chromosomal aberrations were analyzed in one Italian and eight Russian cosmonauts following missions of different duration on the MIR and the international space station (ISS). We used the technique of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to visualize translocations in chromosomes 1 and 2. In some cases, an increase in chromosome damage was observed after flight, but no correlation could be found between chromosome damage and flight history, in terms of number of flights at the time of sampling, duration in space and extra-vehicular activity. Blood samples from one of the cosmonauts were exposed in vitro to 6 MeV X-rays both before and after the flight. An enhancement in radiosensitivity induced by the spaceflight was observed. 相似文献

We present a unified accretion–ejection picture that explains the different spectral state of Black Hole X-ray binaries (BHXrB) from radio to X/γ-rays. In this view, the central region of BHXrB has a multi-flow configuration which consists in (1) an outer standard accretion disc, (2) an inner magnetized accretion disc driving, (3) a self-collimated electron–proton MHD jet, surrounding and (4) a relativistic electron–positron beam when adequate conditions are met. This picture provides a simple and unified explanation to the various canonical spectral states of BH X-ray binaries, by varying the transition radius rJ between the inner disc driving jets and the outer standard disc. In this framework, large rJ correspond to Quiescent and Hard states while small rJ correspond to Thermal Dominant ones. In between these two extremes, rJ can reach values that switches on the pair cascade process giving birth to a relativistic electron–positron beam. In September 1995, NASA-Goddard held a workshop on low-cost access to space for science missions. The workshop provided briefings on balloons, sounding rockets, Shuttle payloads, and low-cost free-flyer concepts, to provide options of getting experiments into space. This report is the result of a panel session organized with the aim of generating new ideas beyond those presented in the workshop. In addition to the authors, Orlando Figueroa and Paul Ondrus of NASA-Goddard and Richard Zwirnbaum of Computer Sciences Corp. participated in the discussions. The ideas presented do not necessarily reflect the current thinking of NASA managers. Although the panel discussion was focused on the kinds of science missions usually funded by NASA, most of the ideas that were generated are relevant to military and commercial missions as well. 相似文献

The use of high speed multicolor imaging sensors provides a valuable tool for characterizing both the infrared signatures of missiles as well as clutter. Over 14 flight hours worth of collections were made of difficult to characterize clutter. This additional data can be utilized to develop and improve missile warning algorithms for better false alarm rates. These analyses show that although a two color staring system could have multiple advantages over a single color system in false alarm rejection, the clutter rejection capabilities can be limited by the relatively low inter-band correlations between the red and blue bands 相似文献

Due to recent advances in hyperspectral imaging sensors many subtle unknown signal sources that cannot be resolved by multispectral sensors can be now uncovered for target detection, discrimination, and identification. Because the information about such sources is generally not available, automatic target recognition (ATR) presents a great challenge to hyperspectral image analysts. Many approaches developed for ATR are based on second-order statistics in the past years. This paper investigates ATR techniques using high order statistics. For ATR in hyperspectral imagery, most interesting targets usually occur with low probabilities and small population and they generally cannot be described by second-order statistics. Under such circumstances, using high-order statistics to perform target detection have been shown by experiments in this paper to be more effective than using second order statistics. In order to further address a challenging issue in determining the number of signal sources needed to be detected, a recently developed concept of virtual dimensionality (VD) is used to estimate this number. NASA’s MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) mission will further the understanding of
the formation of the planets by examining the least studied of the terrestrial planets, Mercury. During the one-year orbital
phase (beginning in 2011) and three earlier flybys (2008 and 2009), the X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) onboard the MESSENGER spacecraft
will measure the surface elemental composition. XRS will measure the characteristic X-ray emissions induced on the surface
of Mercury by the incident solar flux. The Kα lines for the elements Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Ti, and Fe will be detected. The 12°
field-of-view of the instrument will allow a spatial resolution that ranges from 42 km at periapsis to 3200 km at apoapsis
due to the spacecraft’s highly elliptical orbit. XRS will provide elemental composition measurements covering the majority
of Mercury’s surface, as well as potential high-spatial-resolution measurements of features of interest. This paper summarizes

The VIRTIS (Visual IR Thermal Imaging Spectrometer) experiment has been one of the most successful experiments built in Europe
for Planetary Exploration. VIRTIS, developed in cooperation among Italy, France and Germany, has been already selected as
a key experiment for 3 planetary missions: the ESA-Rosetta and Venus Express and NASA-Dawn. VIRTIS on board Rosetta and Venus
Express are already producing high quality data: as far as Rosetta is concerned, the Earth-Moon system has been successfully
observed during the Earth Swing-By manouver (March 2005) and furthermore, VIRTIS will collect data when Rosetta flies by Mars
in February 2007 at a distance of about 200 kilometres from the planet. Data from the Rosetta mission will result in a comparison
– using the same combination of sophisticated experiments – of targets that are poorly differentiated and are representative
of the composition of different environment of the primordial solar system. Comets and asteroids, in fact, are in close relationship
with the planetesimals, which formed from the solar nebula 4.6 billion years ago. The Rosetta mission payload is designed
to obtain this information combining in situ analysis of comet material, obtained by the small lander Philae, and by a long lasting and detailed remote sensing of the
comet, obtained by instrument on board the orbiting Spacecraft. The combination of remote sensing and in situ measurements will increase the scientific return of the mission. In fact, the “in situ” measurements will provide “ground-truth” for the remote sensing information, and, in turn, the locally collected data will
be interpreted in the appropriate context provided by the remote sensing investigation. VIRTIS is part of the scientific payload
of the Rosetta Orbiter and will detect and characterise the evolution of specific signatures – such as the typical spectral
bands of minerals and molecules – arising from surface components and from materials dispersed in the coma. The identification
of spectral features is a primary goal of the Rosetta mission as it will allow identification of the nature of the main constituent
of the comets. Moreover, the surface thermal evolution during comet approach to sun will be also studied. 相似文献
