The Mighei meteorite is generally considered to be unique amongst the group of stony meteorites known as the carbonaceous chondrites in a number of scientifically interesting aspects. The meteorite, which is related to the type II carbonaceous chondrites of Wiik's classification (or type C2 according to van Schmus and Wood), contains extraterrestrial organic compounds (general C content = 2.6%), and extraterrestrial water associated with iron-magnesium silicate crystals (general H2O content=12%).The meteorite fall occurred in 1889, over a region in the Ukraine. In structure it was found to be a chondritic meteorite, having chondrules of order 0.5 mm in size. The composition of the meteorite is inhomogeneous. In mineralogical terms the meteorite is composed of two paragenetic associations, described as high and low temperature, which are generally distributed in equal proportions. The low temperature associations are a characteristic only of carbonaceous chondrites: the minerals involved are chlorites or the serpentine group, carbonates, free sulphur, sulphates and low temperature glass. In chemical terms the Mighei meteorite is somewhat enriched in the volatile elements S, C, H, N, O in comparison to the usual chondrites. These elements are found in different forms and the isotopic composition of the elements S, C, O, is different for different phases. The meteorite is also rich in a number of other fairly volatile element admixtures such as: B, F, Cl, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Br, In, Te, I, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, and contains somewhat enhanced initial quantities of rare gases. The organic compounds are of an abiological nature in the meteorite and are located in finely dispersed distributions between the chondrules. They are present in the main, as polymerized organic compounds. Among these polymers there are gaseous hydrocarbons (saturated and non-saturated) and extractable organic compounds. In the latter condition the following organic compounds have been identified: aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, amino acids and others. The meteorite contains free organic radicals (1017 centres g–1), uncoupled -electrons which are delocalized in the aromatic structure of the polymeric matter. The radiogenic age of the meteorite has been determined as from 2.4 to 3.2 × 109 yr (by the K-Ar method) and up to 4.54 × 109 yr (by the Rb-Sr method), while the radiation age is put at 0.5 to 2.4 × 106 yr. Details of the meteorite structure give evidence of at least two processes in its formation; the accretion of the meteoritic matter, together with the simultaneous formation of organic compounds could have taken place at temperatures between 450 and 300 K.Reported on the XIV Meteoritic Conference, December 17, 1970, Moscow.  相似文献

The F3C Cold Plasma Analyzer (CPA) instrument on theFreja spacecraft is designed to measure the energy per unit charge (E/Q) of ions oe electrons in the range 0<E/Q<200 V and complements the observations made by the F3H Hot Plasma Experiment. The CPA sensor, which is deployed on a boom, is an electrostatic analyzer which produces angle/energy images of particles incident on the sensor in a plane perpendicular to the boom axis. Charged particles incident normal to the CPA sensor housing axis of symmetry, which coincides with the boom axis, pass through collimators and enter a semi-spherical electrostatic analyzer which disperses particles in energy and azimuthal angle of arrival onto an imaging MCP detector thus producing images of the particle distributions in a plane perpendicular to the boom axis. Measurements are transmitted either as discrete 16×16 (angle/energy) images or as parameters related to the incident particle distribution function. Pixels in the discrete images are separated approximately equally in azimuthal angle while the 16 energy bins are separated approximately geometrically in energy. The ratio of the maximum to minimum energy imaged is programmable up to a maximum of more than a factor of ten, and the energy range itself is also under the control of the processor and can be varied by more than an order of magnitude. The density dynamic range of the sensor is increased by the introduction of an electrostatic gating system between the entrance aperture and the analyzer which can be used to duty-cycle low-energy electrons into the sensor thus keeping the count rate within appropriate levels. To reduce the effects of spacecraft induced perturbations on the lower-energy particle distributions, the sensor portion of the instrument is deployed on a 2 m long boom, perpendicular to the spacecraft spin axis. Spacecraft rotation is used to recover complete (4) angle/energy distributions every half spin period. In addition, the sensor skin may be biased with respect to the spacecraft ground to offset effects due to spacecraft charging. Current to the skin is monitored, making the exterior of the sensor equivalent to a large cylindrical Langmuir probe. Two separate processing paths for signals from the MCP anode may be chosen; slow and rast. The slow pulse processing path provides discrete angle/energy images at a nominal rate of 10 images per second and a peak burst mode rate of 100 images per second. The fast analog or current mode path provides crude parameterized estimates of densities, temperatures and drift velocities at nominal rates of up to 1000 parameters per second with a burst rate near 6000 parameters per second. Observations of cold ions and electrons in an unperturbed ionospheric plasma are presented which demonstrate the functionality of the instrument. Suprathermal ion observations in a transverse ion energization or acceleration region are also shown which demonstrate many of the small-scale features of these events. The Canadian Government's right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty free licence in and to any copyright is acknowledge.  相似文献

Magnetic reconnection provides an efficient conversion of the so-called free magnetic energy to kinetic and thermal energies of cosmic plasmas, hard electromagnetic radiation, and accelerated particles. This phenomenon was found in laboratory and space, but it is especially well studied in the solar atmosphere where it manifests itself as flares and flare-like events. We review the works devoted to the tearing instability — the inalienable part of the reconnection process — in current sheets which have, inside of them, a transverse (perpendicular to the sheet plain) component of the magnetic field and a longitudinal (parallel to the electric current) component of the field. Such non-neutral current sheets are well known as the energy sources for flare-like processes in the solar corona. In particular, quasi-steady high-temperature turbulent current sheets are the energy sources during the main or hot phase of solar flares. These sheets are stabilized with respect to the collisionless tearing instability by a small transverse component of magnetic fiel, normally existing in the reconnecting and reconnected magnetic fluxes. The collision tearing mode plays, however, an important and perhaps dominant role for non-neutral current sheets in solar flares. In the MHD approximation, the theory shows that the tearing instability can be completely stabilized by the transverse fieldB n if its value satisfies the conditionB n /BS –3/4 B is the reconnecting component of the magnetic field just near the current sheet,S is the magnetic Reynolds number for the sheet. In this case, stable current sheets become sources of temporal spatial oscillations and usual MHD waves. The application of the theory to the solar atmosphere shows that the effect of the transverse field explains high stability of high-temperature turbulent current sheets in the solar corona. The stable current sheets can be sources of radiation in the radio band. If the sheet is destabilized (atB n /BS –3/4) the compressibility of plasma leads to the arizing of the tearing instability in a long wave region, in which for an incompressible plasma the instability is absent. When a longitudinal magnetic field exists in the current sheet, the compressibility-induces instability can be dumped by the longitudinal field. These effects are significant in destabilization of reconnecting current sheets in solar flares: in particular, the instability with respect to disturbances comparable with the width of the sheet is determined by the effect of compressibility.  相似文献

The magnetogram inversion technique (MIT) is based upon recordings of geomagnetic variations at the worldwide network of ground-based magnetometers. MIT ensures a calculation of a global spatial distribution of the electric field, currents and Joule heating in the ionosphere. Variant MIT-2 provides, additionally, continuous monitoring of the following parameters: Poynting vector flux from the solar wind into the magnetosphere (); power, both dissipated and accumulated in the magnetosphere; magnetic flux in the open tail; and the magnetotail length (l T) (distance between the dayside and nightside neutral points in the Dungey model). Using MIT-2 and data of direct measurements in the solar wind, an analysis is made of a number of substorms, and a new scenario of substorms is suggested. The scenario includes the convection model, the model with a neutral line and the model of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling (outside the current sheet), i.e., the three known models. A brief review is given of these and some other substorms models. A new element in the scenario is the strong positive feedback in the primary generator circuit, which ensures growth of the ratio = / Aby an order of magnitude or more during the substorms. Here Ais the Pointing vector flux in the Akasofu-Perrault approximation, i.e., without the feedback taken into account. The growth of during the substorm is caused only by the feedback effect. It is assumed that the feedback arises due to an elongation of the magnetotail, i.e., a growth of l Tby a factor of (23) during the substorm. In the active phase of substorm, a part (the first active phase) has been identified, where the principal role in the energetics is played by the feedback mechanism and the external energy source (although the internal source plus reconnection inside the plasma sheet make a marked contribution). In the second active phase (expansion) the external generator (solar wind) is switched off, and the main role is now played by the internal energy source (the tail magnetic field and ionospheric wind energy).Models of DP-2 DP-1 transitions are also considered, as well as the magnetospheric substorm-solar flare analogy.  相似文献

Quiet sun
We underline the diagnostic strength of recent observations of the oscillating quiet Sun. While high quality (k, ) power spectra permit a better knowledge of the convection zone, long and continuous survey of oscillations of the integrated Sun provides an efficient sounding of the inner solar body.Proceedings of the Conference Solar Physics from Space, held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), 11–14 November 1980.  相似文献

Much verified information has been accumulated in recent years which shows that many fundamental concepts involving classical physics, thermodynamics, astrophysics and the general theory of relativity are strongly coupled together. This evidence is employed in this paper to explain the principles of the astrophysical school of thermodynamics; a growing revolutionary school which deduces thermodynamics, energy dissipation, and time unisotropies from the Newtonian and Einsteinian theories of gravitation and from the dynamics of radiation in unsaturable (intercluster) space. Accordingly the density of radiation and the dynamics of (unsaturable) outer space affect all processes in the galactic media, in the solar system, in the magnetosphere and on Earth. The origin of all observed irreversibilities in nature — of time, of all time anisotropics, of energy dissipation, of T-violations in elementary particles, of retarded potentials in electrodynamics, of the biological clocks, and of biological arrows of time — is one; it is the radiation unsaturability of space. But since this unsaturability and gravitation are interconnected we explain the origin of asymmetries, structure, and thermodynamics within the frameworks of the Newtonian and Einsteinian theories of gravitation. The theory presented here forms a part of a more general approach called gravitism, which unifies some other disciplinary studies in the natural sciences with a unified approach to gravitation and the theory of time. [1].Gravitism is the general title which refers to the author's philosophy [1].  相似文献

We review work on diffusion coefficients of energetic particles with an attempt to extract implications on their behaviour at high latitudes. In the ecliptic plane results from solar energetic particle propagation between the Sun and about 5 AU can be described by an effective radial mean free path r which is approximately constant as a function of distancer. When particle propagation in three dimensions in the heliosphere is considered it is not sufficient to consider r only. Jovian electrons can be used as probes to determine the parameters of three-dimensional diffusion. In the polar regions diffusion is dominated by its parallel component. Some predictions how should vary with latitude are discussed. For different choices of this variation we present expectations for intensity-time profiles of solar particle events during the Ulysses polar passages.  相似文献

The penetration of fast electrons ( 5 keV) into an artificial magnetosphere and their precipitation on the terrella surface is investigated. These fast electrons act as radioactive tracers allowing the experimental determination of the global picture of plasma flow around the magnetosphere and its intrusion into the latter. Two different zones of precipitation are observed, distinctly separated on the day-side and merging into each other on the night-side. The high latitude penetration region on the day-side is not localized around the neutral points, but is stretched in longitude forming polar cusps toward dusk and dawn. The lower latitude precipitation zone, embracing the whole terrella is due to the particle precipitation from a radiation belt formed in this experiment. The source of these belt particles seems to be located in the plasmasheet on the night side. Besides the polar cusps, a plasma intrusion from the sides of the magnetosphere in the equatorial region is observed. This equatorial gap, originating on the day-side, is gradually transformed into the plasmasheet in the magnetospheric tail. On the basis of these experimental data a model of the magnetosphere is discussed.  相似文献

The primordial helium abundance YP is important for cosmology and the ratio Y/Z of the changes relative to primordial abundances constrains models of stellar evolution. While the most accurate estimates of YP come from emission lines in extragalactic H II regions, they involve an extrapolation to zero metallicity which itself is closely tied up with the slope Y/Z. Recently certain systematic effects have come to light in this exercise which make it useful to have an independent estimate of Y/Z from fine structure in the main sequence of nearby stars. We derive such an estimate from Hipparcos data for stars with Z Z and find values between 2 and 3, which are consistent with stellar models, but still have a large uncertainty.  相似文献

The interpretation of diagnostic parameters in the spectral reflectance data for asteroids provides a means of characterizing the mineralogy and petrology of asteroid surface materials. An interpretive technique based on a quantitative understanding of the functional relationship between the optical properties of a mineral assemblage and its mineralogy, petrology and chemistry can provide a considerably more sophisticated characterization of a surface material than any matching or classification technique for those objects bright enough to allow spectral reflectance measurements. Albedos derived from radiometry and polarization data for individual asteroids can be used with spectral data to establish the spectral albedo, to define the optical density of the surface material and, in general, to constrain mineralogical interpretations.Mineral assemblages analogous to most meteorite types, with the exception of ordinary chondritic assemblages, have been found as surface materials of Main Belt asteroids. C1- and C2-like assemblages (unleached, oxidized meteoritic clay minerals plus opaques such as carbon) dominate the population (80%) throughout the Belt, especially in the outer Belt. A smaller population of asteroids exhibit surface materials similar to C3 (CO, CV) meteoritic assemblages (olivine plus opaque, probably carbon) and are also distributed throughout the Belt. The relative size (diameter) distributions for these two populations of objects are consistent with an origin by sequential accretion from a cooling nebula (C2 as surface layers, C3 as interior layers or cores). Based on information from meteoritic analogues and on qualitative models for the behavior of these materials during a heating episode, it seems unlikely that these C2- and C3-like asteroidal bodies have experienced any significant post-accretionary heating event either near surface or in the deep interior. The majority of remaining studied asteroids (20) of 65 asteroids exhibit spectral reflectance curves dominated by the presence of metallic nickel-iron in their surface materials. These objects are most probably the several end products of an intense thermal event leading to the melting and differentiating of their protobodies. These thermalized bodies are concentrated toward the inner part of the Asteroid Belt but exist throughout the Belt. The size of the proto-asteroid has apparently exercised control over the post-accretionary thermal history of these bodies. The available evidence indicates that all asteroids larger than about 450 km in (present) diameter have undergone a significant heating episode since their formation. The post-accretionary thermal history of the asteroidal parent bodies was apparently affected by both distance from the Sun and body size. The C2-like materials which dominate the main asteroid belt population appear to be relatively rare on earth-approaching asteroids. This suggests that most of these Apollo-Amor objects are not randomly derived from the main belt, but (a) may derive from a single event in recent time (107 yr), (b) may derive from a favorably situated source body, (c) may derive from a particular, compositionally anomalous region of the belt, or (d) may derive from an alternate source (e.g. comets).  相似文献

The Gamma-1 telescope has been developed through a collaboration of scientists in the USSR and France in order to conduct -ray astronomical observations within the energy range from 50 to 5000 MeV. The major characteristics of the telescope were established by Monte-Carlo simulations and calibrations made with the aid of electron and tagged -ray beams produced by an accelerator, and these have been found to be as follows: the effective area for photons coming along the instrument's axis varies from about 50 cm2 at E = 50 MeV to approximately 230 cm2 at E 300 MeV; the angular resolution (half opening of the cone embracing 68% events) is equal to 2.7° at E = 100 MeV, and 1.8° at E = 300 MeV; the energy resolution (FWHM) varies from 70% to 35% as the energy of the detected photons increases from 100 to 550 MeV; the telescope's field-of-view at the half-sensitivity level is 300–450 square degrees depending upon the spectrum of the detected radiation, and the event selection logic. Proceeding from the thus obtained characteristics it is demonstrated that a point source producing a photon flux J (E 100 MeV) = 3 × 10-7 cm-2 s-1, can be detected with a 5 significance by observing it during 106 s at the level of the Cygnus background, and a source having intensity J (E 100 MeV) = 10-6 cm-2 s-1 can be detected to within a mean square positional accuracy of about 15.  相似文献

The Hanle effect is the modification by the local magnetic field of the linear polarization parameters of a spectral line. A brief summary of the theory is presented and it is shown how the complete magnetic vector field can be recovered from the interpretation of the Hanle effect in spectral lines polarized by resonance scattering.Proceedings of the Conference Solar Physics from Space, held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), 11–14 November 1980.  相似文献

A short review is given on the history of the peculiar variable object Car and on a number of relevant references describing and discussing its physical characteristics and behaviour, based on different types of observational techniques. The star is known to be variable since the 17th century. The excessive mass loss to which it was subject during the 19th century is now visible as an ellipsoidal reflection nebula of 15 diameter: the so-called homunculus. The remainder of the paper is spent on different kinds of problems partly based on the results of a decade of photometric monitoring in the VBLUW photometric system of Walraven. Foreground reddening and reddening by dust in the homunculus are determined and amount to E(B - V) J = 0 50 and < 6, respectively. Scanning of the homunculus revealed an estimate for the photometric characteristics of the central object, which presumably consists of a massive hot star surrounded by a cooler gas envelope. The total luminosity is derived using fluxes of various sources in the wavelength region 0.15 < < 175 n resulting in M bol = - 12 3 ± 0 2. The total observed flux corrected for foreground extinction corresponds to a star with R 96 R if T eff 30 000 K. The mass may be near 150 M . The excess luminosity in 1843, when the star was presumably bolometrically at least 2 5 brighter than at present, may have been caused by envelope-energized pulsations when the star's luminosity was close to its Eddington limit. The temperature should then have been 50 000 K. The mass loss rate, during the excess luminosity phase lasting 30 yr, is estimated to amount to M 4 × 10-3 M yr-1. At present the mass loss may be M 10-4M yr-1. Since the homunculus is mainly built up from material expelled in the 30 yr interval (from 1830 to 1860), its total mass amounts to M hom 0.15 M . The historical observations of the colours of Car and a comparison with the characteristics of S Dor type stars, suggest that Car was subject to a number of S Dor type phases similar to those of P Cyg (in the 17th century), S Dor and others. A satisfactory explanation is found for the complete historical light curve. The decrease in light after the 1843 maximum by 9 m , presumably consists of a fading of the luminosity excess and the S Dor effect by 2 5 and 3m, respectively, and a 3 5 extinction by circumstellar dust. The small amplitude light variations which Car showed during the last decade, were studied with the aid of the variations of the Balmer jump. They are presumably caused by temperature variations of the central star.Percy and Welch (1983) (Publ. Astron. Soc. Pacific 95, 491) have observed P Cyg on a number of nights in 1982 and found for the photometric variations a time scale of 30 to 50 days and an amplitude of 0 . m 15.Based partly on observations collected at the ESO, La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

Information can be obtained from energetic particle measurements through the chemical composition, energy spectrum, directional anisotropy, temporal and spatial intensity variations. This is equivalent to saying that there is a distribution functionf k(p,r,t) wherek corresponds to thekth particle species of momentump at positionr and timet.Particle transport is described by the Boltzmann equation, and because the densities are generally low in the case of cosmic rays or energetic solar flare particles, collective transport effects can be neglected. In the absence of magnetospheric motion it is relatively easy to treat the problems of particle transport as simple propagation of charged particles in a stationary magnetic field configuration using, for instance, trajectory calculations in model fields. The method here is to use correlated measurements of the particle distribution at two points along a dynamic trajectory, and in this way to learn something about the geomagnetic field. This approach provides a good basis from which to study magnetospheric dynamics. If the magnetosphere moves, large scale electric fields, turbulent electromagnetic fields and sources and sinks affect the propagation of energetic particles considerably. These effects change the distribution functionf k(p,r,t) and can thus be detected. In this paper, we shall show the importance of the single particle approximation (trajectories in a reference field) in forming the basis of our understanding of the quiet-time penetration of cosmic rays into the magnetosphere, we shall consider the steady dynamics such as wave-particle inter-action and field line reconnection, which is believed to exist nearly all the time, and finally we shall review the work which has been done in the much more complex and less well-understood field of impulsive dynamics such as geomagnetic storms and substorms. This last topic is only just beginning to be investigated in detail, and it is hoped that the study of impulsive dynamics, using energetic particles, may be as successful as the study of the quiet magnetosphere and the steady dynamics.  相似文献

There are a number of radioactive clocks in the cosmic radiation that can be used to measure the time scales for cosmic ray processes in the Galaxy. With high-resolution isotope measurements available from ACE it is now possible to read these clocks with greatly improved accuracy and address key questions about the origin and lifetime of cosmic rays. This paper discusses the status of three such investigations.  相似文献

We present the observation of three flare generated shock waves which were measured by Helios-2 at a radial distance from the Sun of 0.476 AU, 0.444 AU, and 0.297 AU. These results show that two of the shocks fulfill the classification scheme of F-events stated in the past while the third shock profile is that of a R-event being interpreted as a driven wave. Because of the close distance to the Sun a flare-association was possible. Only in one case there is some evidence for a piston in the downstream region of the shock. One of the shocks is characterized by a distinct hole in the frequency distribution of directional discontinuities in the downstream region. An invited paper presented at STIP Workshop on Shock Waves in the Solar Corona and Interplanetary Space, 15–19 June, 1980, Smolenice, Czechoslovakia.  相似文献

Observations and theoretical works so far made are reviewed in regard to the interrelation of VLF and ULF emissions. Quasi-periodic VLF emissions are one of the typical examples showing the interrelation between the two phenomena. The term modulation may be more appropriate to explain these phenomena. Tentative interpretations will be given of the VLF and ULF emissions which are closely associated through a modulation of the electron distributions.  相似文献
