Using the new generation of X-ray observatories, we are now beginning to identify populations of close binaries in globular clusters, previously elusive in the optical domain because of the high stellar density. These binaries are thought to be, at least in part, responsible for delaying the inevitable core collapse of globular clusters and their identification is therefore essential in understanding the evolution of globular clusters, as well as being valuable in the study of the binaries themselves. Here, we present observations made with XMM-Newton of six globular clusters, in which we have identified neutron star low mass X-ray binaries and their descendants (millisecond pulsars), cataclysmic variables and other types of binaries. We discuss not only the characteristics of these binaries, but also their formation and evolution in globular clusters and their use in tracing the dynamical history of these clusters.  相似文献

In the last decade, high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy has revolutionized our understanding of the role of accretion disk winds in black hole X-ray binaries. Here I present a brief review of the state of wind studies in black hole X-ray binaries, focusing on recent arguments that disk winds are not only extremely massive, but also highly variable. I show how new and archival observations at high timing and spectral resolution continue to highlight the intricate links between the inner accretion flow, relativistic jets, and accretion disk winds. Finally, I discuss methods to infer the driving mechanisms of observed disk winds and their implications for connections between mass accretion and ejection processes.  相似文献

The Chandra X-ray Observatory was launched on July 23, 1999. The first X-ray photons were detected on August 12 of that same year. Subsequently observations with the Observatory, which features sub-arcsecond angular resolution, have revolutionized our understanding of the X-ray emitting sky providing hosts of spectacular energy-resolved images and high-resolution spectra. Here we present a brief overview of Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of compact X-ray binaries.  相似文献

Three recent developments in the field of formation and evolution of neutron stars and black holes in binaries are addressed:
• The finding that there is a class of neutron stars, formed in interacting binaries, that do not receive kick velocities in their birth events. This finding is particularly important for our understanding of the formation – and formation rates – of double neutron stars. It is argued that these low-kick neutron stars, which tend to have low masses, are formed by a different physical mechanism than the neutron stars that receive large kick velocities at birth.

• The occurrence of velocity kicks in the formation events of stellar black holes.

• The nature of the companions of millisecond X-ray pulsars.

The theory of polarization effects in radiation from compact X-ray sources is presented. The following four problems are considered: 1) the polarization of X-rays from the magnetized neutron stars; 2) the polarization of X-rays from the accretion disk around a black hole; 3) the optical polarization from X-ray binaries, and 4) the results of X-ray polarimetric observations.  相似文献

Differential emission measure distributions for transition region and corona able to reproduce X-ray and UV emission are investigated. The EXOSAT, EINSTEIN and IUE data for the solar type star K Cet are analyzed. A multitemperature differential emission measure distribution gives a satisfactory fit of the data.  相似文献

The presence of compact X-ray sources in globular clusters allows diagnostic studies of both the X-ray sources themselves and the globular clusters to be carried out. A review of much of this work, primarily based on Einstein X-ray observations and supporting studies of globular clusters at radio through UV wavelengths, is presented. The compact X-ray sources in globular clusters are found to be compact binaries containing neutron stars and - in a separate lower luminosity component of an apparently bimodal luminosity function - possibly white dwarfs. Implications for the formation and evolution of compact binary X-ray sources in globular clusters and in the galactic bulge are discussed. In particular, new evidence is presented that the galactic bulge sources may be compact binaries in the remnants of disrupted globular clusters.  相似文献

In the recent years, the discovery of a new class of Galactic transients with fast and bright flaring X-ray activity, the supergiant fast X-ray transients, has completely changed our view and comprehension of massive X-ray binaries. These objects display X-ray outbursts which are difficult to be explained in the framework of standard theories for the accretion of matter onto compact objects, and could represent a dominant population of X-ray binaries. I will review their main observational properties (neutron star magnetic field, orbital and spin period, long term behavior, duty cycle, quiescence and outburst emission), which pose serious problems to the main mechanisms recently proposed to explain their X-ray behavior. I will discuss both present results and future perspectives with the next generation of X-ray telescopes.  相似文献

In recent times, X-ray flares have been observed in several flare stars and RS CVn binaries. From an analysis of the X-ray flare observations we find a correlation between the average energy emitted in the X-ray band in flares and the bolometric luminosity of the stars. This relation is similar to the relation obtained in the optical band specifically for the flare stars and hence we suggest a similarity in the flaring nature of the flare stars and the RS CVn binaries. Further, a correlation is also found between the X-ray flare decay time and the peak X-ray luminosity for the flare stars and the RS CVn binaries. We show that this relation can be explained by the solar flare loop models.  相似文献

High-resolution Chandra observations have allowed the detection of populations of X-ray sources in galaxies of all morphological types. The X-ray Luminosity Functions (XLFs) of these X-ray source populations have been derived and studied to uncover the drivers for the formation and evolution of binaries in different stellar populations and environments. These XLFs also provide a tool for identifying the nature of the X-ray source population, since different XLFs characterize X-ray sources belonging to young and old stellar populations. Similarly, X-ray colors can be used for identifying different types of X-ray sources. Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULXs, LX > 1039 ergs s−1) are found to be associated with star-forming stellar populations. The study of the ULX population of the Antennae galaxies points to compact accreting binaries.  相似文献

Asymmetric, broad iron lines are a common feature in the X-ray spectra of both X-ray binaries (XRBs) and type-1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). It was suggested that the distortion of the Fe Kα emission results from Doppler and relativistic effects affecting the radiative transfer close to the strong gravitational well of the central compact object: a stellar mass black hole (BH) or neutron star (NS) in the case of XRBs, or a super massive black hole (SMBH) in the case of AGN. However, alternative approaches based on reprocessing and transmission of radiation through surrounding media also attempt to explain the line broadening. So far, spectroscopic and timing analyzes have not yet convinced the whole community to discriminate between the two scenarios. Here we study to which extent X-ray polarimetric measurements of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) and type-1 AGN could help to identify the possible origin of the line distortion. To do so, we report on recent simulations obtained for the two BH flavors and show that the proposed scenarios are found to behave differently in polarization degree and polarization angle. A relativistic origin for the distortion is found to be more probable in the context of BHXRBs, supporting the idea that the same mechanism should lead the way also for AGN. We show that the discriminating polarization signal could have been detectable by several X-ray polarimetry missions proposed in the past.  相似文献

The chemically peculiar (CP) stars are classified into subgroups based on the type of peculiarities. A significant fraction of these are known to be binaries. The faster evolution of the massive component leads to a white dwarf or a neutron star. Further evolution of the binary is analysed taking into consideration, the orbital parameters, effect of magnetic field, spectroscopic peculiarities and finally the statistics of CP binaries and Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXB).

The possible consequences of the evolution to lead to the formation of Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (MCV) and LMXB are discussed.  相似文献

The determination of fundamental parameters in X-ray luminous (persistent) X-ray binaries has been classically hampered by the large optical luminosity of the accretion disc. New methods, based on irradiation of the donor star and burst oscillations, provide the opportunity to derive dynamical information and mass constraints in many persistent systems for the first time. These techniques are here reviewed and the latest results presented.  相似文献

We present optical (ESO), ultraviolet (IUE), X-ray (EXOSAT) and radio (VLA) observations of the visual binary 53 Aquarii. We show that the two components of the system can be used to infer the properties of the Sun at a much earlier epoch.  相似文献

Mid-infrared photometry of the hosts of Narrow-Line X-ray Galaxies at 6μm and 12μm has been attempted with ISOCAM. No conclusive detections have been made. This implies that these are quiescent objects with little or no active star-formation. Neither X-ray binaries nor starburst-driven superwinds are consistent explanations for the X-ray emission in these objects. We conclude that these NLXGs are predominantly AGN-powered.  相似文献

This article briefly reviews first the progress of spectroscopy in X-ray astronomy from proportional counters, a major instrument in early phase of X-ray astronomy, to gas scintillation proportional counters, X-ray CCD cameras, transmission and reflection gratings, and finally to X-ray micro-calorimeters. As a typical example of spectral features observed from high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), the spectra observed from Vela X-1 with Chandra grating spectrometers are then presented and compared with computer simulations for high mass binary systems.  相似文献

In this paper IUE observations of two type II and three type I Supernovae (see Table I and Table II) are reviewed. The type II events were also observed by Einstein and SN 1980k was detected in the soft X-ray energy band. Combining UV spectra available of the same events one has the elements to construct a physical picture which accounts for all observations. For the type II events it appears that the progenitor star was a massive supergiant which underwent a severe mass loss before becoming Supernova. For the type I events there is neither X-ray nor, for the time being, radio detection. The high similarity of the optical and UV spectra for the three events indicates that type I Supernovae are the end products of one and the same phenomenon.  相似文献

Outer radius variations play an important role in the disc structure and evolution. We consider theoretical and observational consequences of such variations in cataclysmic binaries and low-mass X-ray binaries. We find that the action of tidal torques must be important well inside the tidal radius. We also conclude that it is doubtful that the tidal–thermal instability is responsible for the superoutburst/superhump phenomena.  相似文献

Recent ultraviolet and X-ray observations pertaining to the outer atmospheric structure of intermediate mass (4–6 M0) stars and the evolution of their structure are presented. A distance-limited (d ≤ 200 pc) IUE ultraviolet survey of early K bright giants shows that C IV emission commonly is present. These stars are almost evenly split between stars showing hybrid-chromospheric and coronal outer atmospheric structures. EXOSAT observations have been obtained for three hybrid stars, of which only α TrA, the nearest, is detected. The temperature of the emitting plasma is likely to be ∼106K. Observations of six K II stars made with the Einstein satellite show no detections. The general conclusion from the available X-ray data is that early K bright giants are not strong X-ray sources.  相似文献
