The present state of knowledge of the spectrum of the sun from 3000 Å to 170 Å is critically reviewed. The characteristics of the different photographic and photoelectric spectroscopic instruments and the results are summarized and compared. An instrument for advanced studies of the solar corona is described. Its optical system provides nearly stigmatic imaging of selected portions of the Sun over the spectral range from 22.5 to 44.0 nm. This paper reviews (a) the earth's ionosphere, and (b) the solar atmosphere, in relation to the recent observations of solar XUV. The expected ionospheric characteristics are derived as directly as possible from the XUV observations and then compared with the well-known D-, E-, and F-layer formations. The comparison leads to (1) a high ionospheric recombination coefficient decreasing rapidly with height, (2) contributions to the E-layer from both UV and X-rays, and (3) very little difference in the solar cycle variations from the D-, E-, and F-layers although intensity variations are greater from high than low ions. The flux measurements of the identified XUV solar emission lines give information on the numbers of ions in the solar atmosphere. This makes it possible to derive (1) the amount of solar material in each temperature range, (2) the chemical abundances, and (3) the physical differences between quiet solar atmosphere, centres of activity, and flares. When the new dielectronic recombination coefficients are well investigated it should be possible to redetermine the distribution of solar material with temperature. The fitting of such results to chromospheric and coronal models provides many problems. 相似文献

Conclusions During the past three years there have been significant extensions of the solar data available. Over most of the solar spectrum between 1 – 2200 the new or improved observations have led to interesting problems in line identifications. The identifications have in turn led to new methods of determining the physical conditions in the solar atmosphere, eg electron density determinations from the Hei like ion intercombination line to forbidden line ratio (Gabriel and Jordan, 1969b). The majority of the strong lines have now been identified, either by theoretical considerations or from the extensive laboratory data which have recently become available. However, weak lines may also aid the understanding of the chromosphere and corona and work on the identifications of all remaining features observed must continue. 相似文献

Measurements of the shape of the ultraviolet spectrum from B stars are compared with the theoretical spectra predicted from a homogeneous series of eight model atmospheres which are known to be close to a state of radiative equilibrium and to give a good representation of the ordinarily observed spectral region. The broad-band photometer measurements of Byram, Chubb, and Friedman in the region 1314 indicate that the stars become brighter in the ultraviolet as their temperature increases. The theoretical spectra reproduce this trend. However, the theoretical spectra are about three times as bright at 1314 relative to their brightness at 5560 as is observed.The spectral observations at 50Å resolution of Stecher and Milligan of six absorption-line stars are compared in detail with theoretical spectra. The observed shape of the spectrum is reproduced well by the models from 2600 to longer wavelengths. At wavelengths shorter than 2600 Å, the observed fluxes from B stars are less than the predicted fluxes. At 2000 the deficiency is between a factor two and a factor four. The spectrum of Canis Majoris is observed to have a different shape from that found for four other early-type stars. In the case of Canis Majoris the deficiency at 2000 is about a factor 13.The proper manner in which to compare theory and observation is discussed and some astrophysical terminology is explained. Theoretical fluxes, , are given in Table 1 for eight early B type model atmospheres at wavelengths between the Lyman limit and 6251. These fluxes have been computed without consideration of the opacity due to line blanketing. It is shown that line blanketing can probably account for the differences noted between predicted and observed ultra-violet spectra of B stars. It is not necessary at present to invoke unusual sources of opacity in the stellar atmosphere or in the space between the star and the earth in order to explain the observations. Spectra of B stars in the 2000 region at sufficient resolution to show the line spectrum would clarify the problem. 相似文献

A review is given of continuing efforts to generate laboratory spectra at photon energies above 1 keV from highly ionized atoms. Emphasis is placed on the most easily-interpreted highest ion stages such as the hydrogenic, helium-like and lithium-like species. The close similarities to solar flare observations of certain signatures, such as the line and continuum X-ray spectra and microwave emission as well as their sequence of occurrence, are pointed out and scaling factors are given. 相似文献

We present preliminary results of a study of solar wind Alfvénic fluctuations using magnetometer and plasma measurements from the spacecraft Ulysses. We focus on a particular case study, and use wave language to discuss the fluctuations. The observations are consistent with a mixture of convected structures and Alfvén wave trains. Furthermore, our results tend to suggest that the Alfvénic-fluctuations propagate in the radial direction. 相似文献

Velocity measurements of the solar wind in the region of its acceleration were carried out in 1984 with Venera Orbiters using the following specific radio sounding techniques: (i) phase and frequency correlations from two or three widely-spaced ground stations; (ii) phase and frequency correlations from two spacecraft and two widely-spaced ground stations; (iii) two station two-way coherent Doppler measurements; (iv) determination of the break frequency in power spectra of intensity fluctuations. Our results are substantially lower than those derived from direct Doppler shift measurements of transition region and lower coronal resonance lines and those from measurements applying the Doppler dimming technique. 相似文献

The purpose of this work is to study the various -ray-production mechanisms in solar flares and to calculate the flux, the spectrum, and the decay curves of radiation. Using the continuity equation and taking into account the energy losses for solar-flare-accelerated particles, we obtain the time-dependent particle distribution and thus the time behavior of the resulting rays. The important processes for producing rays in solar flares are found to be nonthermal electron bremsstrahlung, decay of neutral mesons, positron annihilation, neutron capture, and decay of excited nuclei. The results are applied to several known solar flares. For a large flare such as the class 3+ on February 23, 1956, continuous rays with energies up to 100 MeV from electron bremsstrahlung and neutral meson decays are observable at the orbit of the Earth by existing -ray detectors. Line rays from positron annihilation (0.51 MeV), neutron capture (2.23 MeV), and deexcitation of excited nuclei O16 (6.14 and 7.12 MeV) and C12 (4.43 MeV) are particularly strong and well above the continuous -ray background due to electron bremsstrahlung. A number of previously unclassified multiplets of Fexiv, xiii, xii, and xi produced by transitions of the type 3s 23p n -3s3p n+1 are identified in the XUV spectrum of the Sun. The iron lines account for most of the previously unidentified strong lines between 330 and 370 Å. Solar observations of especial value for the investigation of the 300–400 Å region were the slitless spectroheliograms of September 22, 1968 (Purcell and Tousey, 1969) and November 4, 1969 (Tousey, 1971) — on which the image of a flare was recorded. Other solar identifications in the same spectral region include the resonance lines of Nixvii and Nixviii, and one 3p-3d multiplet of Fexiii. The solar blend at 417 Å involving the Fexv inter-combination line and Sxiv is resolved. 相似文献

The Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) and the Solar Wind Ions Mass Spectrometer (SWIMS) on ACE are instruments optimized for measurements of the chemical and isotopic composition of solar and interstellar matter. SWICS determines uniquely the chemical and ionic-charge composition of the solar wind, the thermal and mean speeds of all major solar wind ions from H through Fe at all solar wind speeds above 300 km s−1 (protons) and 170 km s−1 (Fe+16), and resolves H and He isotopes of both solar and interstellar sources. SWICS will measure the distribution functions of both the interstellar cloud and dust cloud pickup ions up to energies of 100 keV e−1. SWIMS will measure the chemical, isotopic and charge state composition of the solar wind for every element between He and Ni. Each of the two instruments uses electrostatic analysis followed by a time-of-flight and, as required, an energy measurement. The observations made with SWICS and SWIMS will make valuable contributions to the ISTP objectives by providing information regarding the composition and energy distribution of matter entering the magnetosphere. In addition, SWICS and SWIMS results will have an impact on many areas of solar and heliospheric physics, in particular providing important and unique information on: (i) conditions and processes in the region of the corona where the solar wind is accelerated; (ii) the location of the source regions of the solar wind in the corona; (iii) coronal heating processes; (iv) the extent and causes of variations in the composition of the solar atmosphere; (v) plasma processes in the solar wind; (vi) the acceleration of particles in the solar wind; (vii) the physics of the pickup process of interstellar He in the solar wind; and (viii) the spatial distribution and characteristics of sources of neutral matter in the inner heliosphere. Electric field measurements are reported at 11 magnetopause crossings that occurred during a single in-bound ISEE-1 satellite pass near a local time of 1030. In combination with magnetic field data, these measurements show the existence of electric field components tangential to the actual magnetopause in the frame of rest of the magnetopause on every crossing of the current carrying layers associated with the 11 magnetopause traversals. These tangential electric field components were oriented with respect to the magnetopause sheet currents such that there was an electrical power dissipation of between 30 and 110 W km-2 on 10 of the 11 crossings. These results are in agreement with requirements of reconnection theories. Histograms of the normal electric field components and of the orientation, velocity, and thickness of the current carrying layer are presented. Suggestions of the existence of a parallel electric field in the magnetosheath near the magnetopause and of propagation of large amplitude waves along the magnetopause are also made. 相似文献

An extrapolation of the steady-state wind to large distances, evolution of disturbances and structure, modulation of cosmic rays, interactions with planetary bodies (bow shocks and magnetosheaths), and interactions with interstellar neutral helium and hydrogen are briefly discussed. The advent of reliable extraterrestrial solar irradiance measurements from satellites has supplied the impetus for new research in solar physics and solar-terrestrial relationships. The records for the principal experiments now extend beyond nine years. The Nimbus-7 measurements began in November 1978 and the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) results started in February 1980. Both the ERB experiment of Nimbus-7 and the ACRIM experiment of SMM are still operational as of this writing (June 1988). We describe the nine-year Nimbus-7 total solar irradiance data set and compare it with similar data sets from the SMM and other satellite solar monitoring programs. Long-term downward trends of less than 0.02 % per year had been noted during the decaying portion of solar cycle 21 with indications that a leveling off and possible reversal of the trend was being experienced as we enter the new cycle. It had been demonstrated that fluctuations in the data over shorter periods corresponded to solar activity, from a primary discovery of irradiance depletions in times of building large sunspot groups to more subtle effects on the scale of solar rotation. Studies of the frequency spectra of the measurements have advanced the interest in helioseismology or mode analysis. Studies of photospheric activity have advanced by modelling of the sunspot blocking and photospheric brightening versus the measured irradiance. The theories are being extended to longer time-scales which indicate that solar irradiance is higher near solar cycle maximum, as defined by activity, and somewhat lower during the period between cycles. While measurements of total solar irradiance, the solar constant, alone cannot be employed to answer all of the questions of solar physics or helioclimatology, these long-term, high-precision data sets are valuable to both disciplines. The continuation of such measurements to more meaningful, longer time-scales should have a high priority in the international space community. 相似文献
