This article reviews recent development of the theory of current loop coalescence and shock waves, giving particular attention to particle acceleration caused by these processes. First, explosive reconnection driven by the current loop coalescence and associated particle acceleration are studied by theoretical and magnetohydrodynamic simulation methods and the results are compared with observations of solar flares; this model gives a good explanation for the quasi-periodic structure of some solar flare bursts. Next follows a discussion of particle acceleration in association with fast magnetosonic shock waves. It is shown theoretically and by relativistic particle simulation that a quasi-perpendicular shock wave can accelerate trapped ions in the direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field up to speeds much greater than the Alfvén speed, . When the ambient magnetic field is rather strong ( ce pe ), both ions and electrons can be accelerated to relativistic energies. For both the nonrelativistic and relativistic cases, the time needed for the acceleration is very short; it is for the ions. These results are compared with the rapid and simultaneous acceleration of ions and electrons in the impulsive phase of solar flares.  相似文献

The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite, currently planned to he launched in the course of 2006, will require a precise drag compensation and a fine attitude control along the Local Orbiting Reference Frame (LORF) of a polar Sun-synchronous low orbit, allowing the Earth gravity field to be recovered with unprecedented accuracy by post-processing the scientific telemetry. To this aim, the spectral density of the spacecraft linear and angular accelerations must be limited below 0.025 respectively, in the frequency range from 5 mHz to 0.1 Hz, the gradiometer measurement bandwidth. In the same range, the orientation errors of the spacecraft in the LORF and of the LORF in the inertial frame must be kept below 10 . The Drag-Free Mode, encharged of drag-free and attitude control (DFAC) during measurement phases, determines the spacecraft state vector using a very precise gradiometer, one large Field-of-View Star Tracker and a Satellite-to-Satellite Tracking Instrument. Force and torque commands are actuated by two assemblies of thrusters: a single ion-thruster acting along the orbital direction, a set of eight micro-thrusters acting along the other five degrees of freedom. To cover every mission scenario, other control modes have been studied and designed: the Coarse Pointing Mode dedicated to rate damping and Sun acquisition, the Fine Pointing Mode handling the transition to Drag-Free Mode and the Ultimate Safe Mode, a survival operative mode to improve mission reliability. Results presented in this paper give a positive perspective on the solidity of the current DFAC design. In the paper we have investigated the periodicity of high speed solar wind (HSSW) streams using the technique of power spectrum analysis. The data for HSSW streams has been taken from the papers by Lindblad and Lundstedt (1981, 1983) and Lindblad et al. (1989) The power spectrum analysis of the daily HSSW streams events for the period 1964–1975 (solar cycle 20) shows peaks of 14, 7, 2.9 and 2.6 days, and daily HSSW events for the period 1976–1982 (solar cycle 21) shows peaks of 15.4, 7, 2.9 and 2.6 days. The HSSW events for period 1964–1982 (solar cycles 20-21) shows peaks of 15.4, 7, 3.7, 2.9 and 2.6 days. The common periods from above study are 7, 2.9 and 2.6 days. The 2.9, 2.6 days and other periods are folding frequency. The 7 days periodicity is close to the th of solar rotation which may be the time for energy build up for coronal holes to produce HSSW streams. We present a theoretical overview of low-frequency waves and instabilities in collisionless, multi-component plasmas with gyrotropic ( ) thermal pressure. We show that the complete dispersion relation can be obtained in the framework of a mixed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)-kinetic formalism, which uses the MHD mass, momentum, and induction equations, together with the kinetically corrected version of the double-adiabatic equations of state. The complete dispersion relation contains not only the three standard modes (fast, slow, and Alfvén) from double-adiabatic MHD, but also the mirror mode from kinetic theory. We examine the stability properties of these four modes, firstly in the case of a uniform medium, and secondly in the case of a stratified and rotating medium. We also discuss the connections with the quasi-interchange modes (interchange and translation) often referred to in the context of magnetospheric physics.  相似文献

Deuterium fractionations in cometary ices provide important clues to the origin and evolution of comets. Mass spectrometers aboard spaceprobe Giotto revealed the first accurate D/H ratios in the water of Comet 1P/Halley. Ground-based observations of HDO in Comets C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) and C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), the detection of DCN in Comet Hale-Bopp, and upper limits for several other D-bearing molecules complement our limited sample of D/H measurements. On the basis of this data set all Oort cloud comets seem to exhibit a similar ratio in H2O, enriched by about a factor of two relative to terrestrial water and approximately one order of magnitude relative to the protosolar value. Oort cloud comets, and by inference also classical short-period comets derived from the Kuiper Belt cannot be the only source for the Earth's oceans. The cometary O/C ratio and dynamical reasons make it difficult to defend an early influx of icy planetesimals from the Jupiter zone to the early Earth. D/H measurements of OH groups in phyllosilicate rich meteorites suggest a mixture of cometary water and water adsorbed from the nebula by the rocky grains that formed the bulk of the Earth may be responsible for the terrestrial D/H. The D/H ratio in cometary HCN is 7 times higher than the value in cometary H2O. Species-dependent D-fractionations occur at low temperatures and low gas densities via ion-molecule or grain-surface reactions and cannot be explained by a pure solar nebula chemistry. It is plausible that cometary volatiles preserved the interstellar D fractionation. The observed D abundances set a lower limit to the formation temperature of (30 ± 10) K. Similar numbers can be derived from the ortho-to-para ratio in cometary water, from the absence of neon in cometary ices and the presence of S2. Noble gases on Earth and Mars, and the relative abundance of cometary hydrocarbons place the comet formation temperature near 50 K. So far all cometary D/H measurements refer to bulk compositions, and it is conceivable that significant departures from the mean value could occur at the grain-size level. Strong isotope effects as a result of coma chemistry can be excluded for molecules H2O and HCN. A comparison of the cometary ratio with values found in the atmospheres of the outer planets is consistent with the long-held idea that the gas planets formed around icy cores with a high cometary D/H ratio and subsequently accumulated significant amounts of H2 from the solar nebula with a low protosolar D/H. We propose a technique to derive the coronal density irregularity factor , wheren is the electron density. The absolute photometric comparison between the intensity of UV lines and the white-light K-coronal polarized brightness (pB) provides an unique constraint on the inhomogeneity of the corona. The ratio of the measured H I Lyman (Ly-) line intensity to the resonant-scattering dominated H I Lyman (Ly-) intensity can be used to extract the collisonal component of the Ly-. This component yields an estimate of . The quantity is then obtained from white-light K-coronal measurements. The use of lines of the same atomic species minimizes the effects due to outflow velocities (i.e., Doppler dimming), and reduces the errors introduced by the uncertainties in the ionization balance, the atomic parameters, and the solar abundances. The UVCS/SOHO unique capability of performing cotemporal and cospatial measurements of the Ly- and Ly- lines, and ofpB makes this instrument ideal for implementing this technique.  相似文献

A technique to derive the coronal density irregularity factor , wheren is the electron density, has been proposed by Fineschi and Romoli (1993). This technique will exploit the unique UVCS capability of cotemporal and cospatial measurements of both UV line radiation and K-coronal polarized brightness,pB.The ratio of the measured H I Lyman (Ly-) line intensity to the resonant-scattering dominated H I Lyman (Ly-) intensity can be used to extract the collisional component of the Ly-. This component yields an estimate of . The quantity is then obtained from the UVCS white-light K-coronal measurements. We present simulated observations of the UVCS for coronal atmosphere models with different filling factors and electron density profiles, and for different coronal structures (e.g., coronal holes, streamers). These simulations will show how the proposed technique may be used to probe inhomogeneities of the solar corona.  相似文献

The Time-of-flight Energy Angle Mass Spectrograph (TEAMS) is being flown on the FAST Small Explorer mission to measure the 3-dimensional distribution function of the major ion species present in the lower magnetosphere. The instrument is similar to time-of-flight plasma analyzer systems that have been designed and planned for flight as CODIF (COmposition and DIstribution Function analyzer) on the four European Space Agency Cluster-II spacecraft and, as ESIC (Equator-S Ion Composition instrument) on Equator-S. This instrument allows the 3-dimensional distribution functions of individual ion species to be determined within spin period (2.5 s). Two-dimensional distributions are measured in 80 ms. These capabilities are crucial for the study of selective energization processes in the auroral regions of the magnetosphere. The design, operational characteristics, and test and calibration results for this instrument are presented. The sensor consists of a toroidal top-hat electrostatic analyzer with instantaneous acceptance of ions over 360° in polar angle. After post-acceleration of the incoming ions by up to 25 kV, a time-of-flight mass spectrograph discriminates the individual species. It has been demonstrated through calibration that the instrument can easily separate H+, He2+, He+, O+ and, for energies after post-acceleration of > 20 keV, even O2 + molecules. On-board mass discrimination and the internal accumulation of several distinct data quantities combined with the spacecraft's flexible telemetry formatting allow for instrument data rates from 7.8 kb s–1 to 315 kb s–1 to be telemetered to ground through the FAST centralized Instrument Data Processor.  相似文献

The baryon density of the universe B is well measured indirectly from Big-Bang nucleo-synthesis, in particular by recent measurements of the D/H ratio in high-redshift QSO absorption systems. In addition, very recent measurements of the second maximum of the power-spectrum of the CMB fine scale anisotropy allow to constrain B at z1000. Both results agree and yield B=0.02h –2. Direct measurements of the diffuse baryonic component (intergalactic gas) at redshifts z=3 and 1.5 and in the local universe are reviewed and shown to be much more difficult. Available observations are consistent with the hypothesis that at z=3 and possibly still at z=1.5 nearly all baryons are located in the highly ionized L forest component, while at later epochs the contribution of a low-density, shock-heated component (105–107 K), the so called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), occupies with decreasing redshift an increasing fraction of all baryons. Methods to detect this component and the difficulty to make quantitative estimates are described. In the local universe of all baryons may be hidden in the WHIM. Yet at z=1.5, this component contains at least a factor of 5 less material.  相似文献

Transient phenomena in the magnetotail and their relation to substorms   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recent observations of magnetic field, plasma flow and energetic electron anisotropies in the magnetotail plasma sheet during substorms have provided strong support for the idea that a magnetospheric substorm involves the formation of a magnetic neutral line (the substorm neutral line) within the plasma sheet at X SM — 10R E to -25R E. An initial effect, in the tail, of the neutral line's formation is the severance of plasma sheet field lines to form a plasmoid, i.e., a closed magnetic loop structure, that is quickly (within 5–10 min) ejected from the tail into the downstream solar wind. The plasmoid's escape leaves a thin downstream plasma sheet through which plasma and energetic particles stream continuously into the solar wind, often throughout the duration of the substorm's expansive phase. Southward oriented magnetic field threads this tailward-flowing plasma but its detection, as an identifier of the occurrence of magnetic reconnection, is made difficult by the thinness and turbulence of the downstream plasma sheet. The thinning of the plasma sheet downstream of the neutral line is observed, by satellites located anywhere but very close to the tail's midplane, as a plasma dropout. Multiple satellite observations of plasma droputs suggest that the substorm neutral line often extends across a large fraction (> ) of the tail's breadth. Near the time of substorm recovery the substorm neutral line moves quickly tailward to a more distant location, progressively inflating the closed field lines earthward of it, to reform the plasma sheet.Proceedings of the Symposium on Solar Terrestrial Physics held in Innsbruck, May–June 1978.  相似文献

A model for the emission processes causing rapid variability (less than one day) in active galactic nuclei is developed. Relativistic electron beams escape from reconnection sheets in coronae of accretion disks and excite plasma turbulence with a typical frequency , which depends on the electron number densityn (see also the contribution by R. van Oss). The finite lengths of different beams emerging from different reconnection sheets allows that the waves arecoherently scattered to frequencies 2pe. For Lorentz factors 103 and densities typical for disk coronaen106 cm –3 (derived from iron line observations) one easily reaches the optical, frequency range. The time scale of the variability is then caused by the relaxation of the electron beams. Likewise, this model explains the very rapid variability in the X-ray (less than 10 minutes) by changing the parameters slightly. According to this scenario the higher the variable frequency is, the closer to the central black hole it should originate.  相似文献

Increasing the number of dimensions calls for significant changes in simulation techniques. Demand on computer time and space increases by orders of magnitude and hardware development affects the feasibility. Gridless and Fokker-Planck codes are possible in ID, but one needs grids and PIC codes in 2D and 3D. This imposes limits on Debye lengths, particle size and spacing, and on resolution. Non-spectral (local) E-M codes also suffer a Courant restriction on δt, in addition to the usual ωp δt restriction. Spectral methods therefore have an advantage; they also permit convenient filtering, particle shaping and control of resolution. 2D and codes are well advanced and documented (4,5). 3D codes are in their infancy. Data management, rather than physics or numerical analysis, becomes the major problem (10). Machine-independent 3D codes are too limited in resolution and speed. Parallelism helps greatly but makes the 3D codes machine-dependent. A present-day limit is attempted in a 2*128**3 grid code for CRAYs which process ∼ 5 million particles in ∼ 2 minutes per time step. Layering is employed to break up the 3D problem into many 2D problems. Fields and particles are packed and buffered in and out of core. Diagnostics are limited by the large volume of information accumulated in a run. Results of runs with 3D codes have tended to show that the third dimension, treated as “ignorable” in 2D simulations, should not have been ignored. With the next generation of highly parallel multiprocessors (which, however, call for the abandonment of spectral and implicit methods) one may hope to do very realistic 3D simulations.  相似文献

A short review is given on the history of the peculiar variable object Car and on a number of relevant references describing and discussing its physical characteristics and behaviour, based on different types of observational techniques. The star is known to be variable since the 17th century. The excessive mass loss to which it was subject during the 19th century is now visible as an ellipsoidal reflection nebula of 15 diameter: the so-called homunculus. The remainder of the paper is spent on different kinds of problems partly based on the results of a decade of photometric monitoring in the VBLUW photometric system of Walraven. Foreground reddening and reddening by dust in the homunculus are determined and amount to E(B - V) J = 0 50 and < 6, respectively. Scanning of the homunculus revealed an estimate for the photometric characteristics of the central object, which presumably consists of a massive hot star surrounded by a cooler gas envelope. The total luminosity is derived using fluxes of various sources in the wavelength region 0.15 < < 175 n resulting in M bol = - 12 3 ± 0 2. The total observed flux corrected for foreground extinction corresponds to a star with R 96 R if T eff 30 000 K. The mass may be near 150 M . The excess luminosity in 1843, when the star was presumably bolometrically at least 2 5 brighter than at present, may have been caused by envelope-energized pulsations when the star's luminosity was close to its Eddington limit. The temperature should then have been 50 000 K. The mass loss rate, during the excess luminosity phase lasting 30 yr, is estimated to amount to M 4 × 10-3 M yr-1. At present the mass loss may be M 10-4M yr-1. Since the homunculus is mainly built up from material expelled in the 30 yr interval (from 1830 to 1860), its total mass amounts to M hom 0.15 M . The historical observations of the colours of Car and a comparison with the characteristics of S Dor type stars, suggest that Car was subject to a number of S Dor type phases similar to those of P Cyg (in the 17th century), S Dor and others. A satisfactory explanation is found for the complete historical light curve. The decrease in light after the 1843 maximum by 9 m , presumably consists of a fading of the luminosity excess and the S Dor effect by 2 5 and 3m, respectively, and a 3 5 extinction by circumstellar dust. The small amplitude light variations which Car showed during the last decade, were studied with the aid of the variations of the Balmer jump. They are presumably caused by temperature variations of the central star.Percy and Welch (1983) (Publ. Astron. Soc. Pacific 95, 491) have observed P Cyg on a number of nights in 1982 and found for the photometric variations a time scale of 30 to 50 days and an amplitude of 0 . m 15.Based partly on observations collected at the ESO, La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

Three-dimensional distributions for 24.0–44.5 keV protons (ions) are presented from the ISEE-1 medium energy particles instrument during a magnetopause traversal at 01:10 UT on 20 November 1977. Local time of the traversal was 1030. Ion fluxes were observed coming generally from the subsolar region, but over a wide range of latitudes. Enhanced fluxes were observed at the magnetopause crossing with strong components from the subsolar region and from the +Z SE direction. These observations are compared with the simultaneous electric field observations presented by Mozer et al. (1978). Ion streaming in a direction consistent with the Y-component of the drift velocity was observed whereas streaming along the X and Z-components is not seen. Based on energy arguments we conclude that in this case, 24 keV ions are not the major energy carrier of the locally measured · dissipation.  相似文献

We present the design, implementation, and on-ground performance measurements of the Ionospheric Connection Explorer EUV spectrometer, ICON EUV, a wide field (\(17^{\circ}\times 12^{\circ}\)) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imaging spectrograph designed to observe the lower ionosphere at tangent altitudes between 100 and 500 km. The primary targets of the spectrometer, which has a spectral range of 54–88 nm, are the Oii emission lines at 61.6 nm and 83.4 nm. Its design, using a single optical element, permits a 0 . ° 26 Open image in new window imaging resolution perpendicular to the spectral dispersion direction with a large (\(12^{\circ} \)) acceptance parallel to the dispersion direction while providing a slit-width dominated spectral resolution of \(R\sim25\) at 58.4 nm. Pre-flight calibration shows that the instrument has met all of the science performance requirements.  相似文献

Collective radiation processes operating in laboratory and space plasmas are reviewed with an emphasis towards astrophysical applications. Particular stress is placed on the physics involved in the various processes rather than in the detailed derivation of the formulas. Radiation processes from stable non-thermal, weakly turbulent and strongly turbulent magnetized and unmagnetized plasmas are discussed. The general theoretical ideas involved in amplification processes such as stimulated scattering are presented along with their application to free electron and plasma lasers. Direct radio-emission of electromagnetic waves by linear instabilities driven by beams or velocity anisotropies are shown to be of relevance in space applications. Finally, as an example of the computational state of the art pertaining to plasma radiation, a study of the type III solar radio bursts is presented.

Variations in the abundances of short-lived radionuclides such as 26Al (τ1/2 ≈ 0.74 Ma) and 53Mn (τ1/2 ≈ 3.7 Ma) in meteoritic solids may be used to infer relative formation intervals of these solids in the nebula at precisions of less than 1 Ma. In a strict chronometric interpretation of the isotopic variations, whereby criteria such as spatial and temporal isotopic homogeneity and closed system isotopic evolution are met, solid formation occurred in the nebula for at least several million years. This is longer than some theoretical and astronomical estimates for the duration of the active nebula. The evidence for live 41Ca (τ1/2 ≈ 0.10 Ma) in meteoritic inclusions further indicates that the onset of solid formation occurred quite early, perhaps within a few hundred thousand years after the onset of the collapse of the sun's parent molecular cloud. Failure of the chronometric interpretation may arise for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to, the late, inhomogeneous injection of material from a nearby stellar source or the local production of short-lived radionuclides by an energetic particle irradiation, e. g., from T Tauri (X-wind) or galactic cosmic ray sources. Although some isotopic evidence exists that the criteria required for a strict chronometric interpretation are not met by each of the short-lived chronometers, there is no compelling reason to shorten the interval of solid formation in the nebula to less than 1 Ma. Using high-resolution mass spectrometers on board the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), we surveyed the event-averaged ∼0.1–60 MeV/nuc heavy ion elemental composition in 64 large solar energetic particle (LSEP) events of cycle 23. Our results show the following: (1) The Fe/O ratio decreases with increasing energy up to ∼10 MeV/nuc in ∼92% of the events and up to ∼60 MeV/nuc in ∼64% of the events. (2) The rare isotope 3He is greatly enhanced over the corona or the solar wind values in 46% of the events. (3) The heavy ion abundances are not systematically organized by the ion’s M/Q ratio when compared with the solar wind values. (4) Heavy ion abundances from C–Fe exhibit systematic M/Q-dependent enhancements that are remarkably similar to those seen in 3He-rich SEP events and CME-driven interplanetary (IP) shock events. Taken together, these results confirm the role of shocks in energizing particles up to ∼60 MeV/nuc in the majority of large SEP events of cycle 23, but also show that the seed population is not dominated by ions originating from the ambient corona or the thermal solar wind, as previously believed. Rather, it appears that the source material for CME-associated large SEP events originates predominantly from a suprathermal population with a heavy ion enrichment pattern that is organized according to the ion’s mass-per-charge ratio. These new results indicate that current LSEP models must include the routine production of this dynamic suprathermal seed population as a critical pre-cursor to the CME shock acceleration process.  相似文献

Measurements below several MeV/nucleon from Wind/LEMT and ACE/ULEIS show that elements heavier than Zn (Z=30) can be enhanced by factors of ∼100 to 1000, depending on species, in 3He-rich solar energetic particle (SEP) events. Using the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS) on ACE we find that even large SEP (LSEP) shock-accelerated events at energies from ∼10 to >100 MeV/nucleon are often very iron rich and might contain admixtures of flare seed material. Studies of ultra-heavy (UH) SEPs (with Z>30) above 10 MeV/nucleon can be used to test models of acceleration and abundance enhancements in both LSEP and 3He-rich events. We find that the long-term average composition for elements from Z=30 to 40 is similar to standard solar system values, but there is considerable event-to-event variability. Although most of the UH fluence arrives during LSEP events, UH abundances are relatively more enhanced in 3He-rich events, with the (34<Z<40)/O ratio on average more than 50 times higher in 3He-rich events than in LSEP events. At energies >10 MeV/nucleon, the most extreme event in terms of UH composition detected so far took place on 23 July 2004 and had a (34<Z<40)/O enhancement of ∼250–300 times the standard solar value.  相似文献

The ionic charge of solar energetic particles (SEP) as observed in interplanetary space is an important parameter for the diagnostic of the plasma conditions at the source region and provides fundamental information about the acceleration and propagation processes at the Sun and in interplanetary space. In this paper we review the new measurements of ionic charge states with advanced instrumentation onboard the SAMPEX, SOHO, and ACE spacecraft that provide for the first time ionic charge measurements over the wide energy range of ∼0.01 to 70 MeV/nuc (for Fe), and for many individual SEP events. These new measurements show a strong energy dependence of the mean ionic charge of heavy ions, most pronounced for iron, indicating that the previous interpretation of the mean ionic charge being solely related to the ambient plasma temperature was too simplistic. This energy dependence, in combination with models on acceleration, charge stripping, and solar and interplanetary propagation, provides constraints for the temperature, density, and acceleration time scales in the acceleration region. The comparison of the measurements with model calculations shows that for impulsive events with a large increase of Q Fe(E) at energies ≤1 MeV/nuc the acceleration occurs low in the corona, typically at altitudes ≤0.2 R S .  相似文献
