In the late 1960s the discovery of the Crab pulsar in its associated supernova remnant, launched a new field in supernova remnant research: the study of pulsar-driven or plerionic supernova remnants. In these type of remnants, the relativistic wind emitted by the pulsar, blows a pulsar wind nebula into the interior of its supernova remnant. Now, more then forty years after the discovery of the Crab pulsar, there are more then fifty plerionic supernova remnants known, due to the ever-increasing capacity of observational facilities. These observational studies reveal a Zoo of complex morphologies over a wide range of frequencies, indicating the significance of the interaction between a pulsar wind nebula with its surrounding supernova remnant. A pulsar which gained a kick velocity at birth, will ultimately break outside of its remnant, after which the pulsar wind nebula interacts directly with the interstellar medium. In general these pulsar wind nebulae are bounded by a bow shock, due to the supersonic motion of the pulsar. There are a few examples known of these pulsar-powered bow shocks, a number which is slowly increasing.I will review our current understanding of the different evolutionary stages of a pulsar wind nebula as it is interacting with its associated supernova remnant. Therefore, I will discuss both analytical and more recent numerical (M)HD models. The four main stages of a pulsar wind nebula are: the supersonic expansion stage, the reverse shock interaction stage, the subsonic expansion stage and ultimately the stage when the head of the bubble is bounded by a bow shock, due to the supersonic motion of the pulsar. Ultimately this pulsar wind nebula bow shock will break through its associated remnant, after which the pulsar-powered bow shock will interact directly with the interstellar medium. I will discuss recent numerical models from these type of pulsar wind nebulae and their morphology.  相似文献

The large-scale structure of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) tells us a considerable amount about their average magnetic fields, the total particle input from the pulsar winds, and the confining pressure at their outer boundaries. However, the details of the pulsar outflow, the sites of shocks and particle acceleration, the effects of instabilities in the magnetic field, and the interaction between the relativistic wind and the surrounding ejecta are contained in small-scale structures, where we observe jets and toroidal structures, time-varying emission from compact clumps, and filaments in both the inner and outer regions of the nebulae. Here, I review recent observational studies of compact structures in PWNe and present current scenarios (and questions) regarding their origin.  相似文献

A recent multibeam pulsar survey of the outer Galactic plane at Parkes has discovered the first-known double-pulsar binary, a very compact double neutron star system in which both stars are observable as radio pulsars. In this review, we briefly describe the discovery and the studies which have been enabled by the unique properties of the system. These range from the most precise confirmation yet of the theory of general relativity, with the possibility of even more new tests and the measurement of second-order post-Newtonian effects, to studies of the magnetospheres and emission properties of the two pulsars. The discovery also results in a significant increase in the expected rate of occurrence of the mergers of double neutron star systems, and hence the rate of detection of such events by the new ground-based gravitational wave detectors.  相似文献

At the end of the EGRET mission, only 6–8 Galactic sources had been identified as young pulsars. Since then, several energetic pulsars have been detected in EGRET error boxes along the Galactic plane, as well as several pulsar wind nebulae from which pulsations have not yet been discovered. Some of these nebulae are associated with moderately variable EGRET sources, suggesting that the γ-ray emission might be coming from the nebula rather than from the pulsar magnetosphere. There is also a population of unidentified EGRET sources at mid-Galactic latitudes which have been proposed to be either nearby middle-aged pulsars or millisecond pulsars. I review the current status of observational studies of pulsars associated with EGRET sources and what they suggest the upcoming AGILE and GLAST γ-ray missions might observe.  相似文献

The difference in morphology between filled and shell type supernova remnants is attributed to differences in the activity of the neutron stars left by the supernovae. Pulsar activity leads to centrally concentrated remnants similar to the Crab. Non-activity as a pulsar results in all of the rotational energy loss going into dipole radiation. The pressure of this radiation creates shell-like objects with hollow interiors such as Cas A.  相似文献

After more than two years of operation, the imaging γ-ray SIGMA telescope has accumulated several days of observation toward well known X-ray binaries. Four bright sources falling in this category have been detected so far: The pulsar GX 1+4 near the center of our galaxy, the stellar wind accreting system 4U 1700-377, and the black hole candidates Cygnus X-1 and GX 339-4. Moreover, SIGMA have observed three transients sources, which turned out to be also hard X-ray sources : The burster KS 1731-260, Tra X-1, and the Musca Nova. The properties of these systems in the SIGMA domain will be reviewed and a spectral distinction between black holes and neutron stars will be sketched.  相似文献

“With all reserve, we advance the view that a supernova represents the transition of an ordinary star into a neutron star.”This conclusion, reached just 50 years ago in a classic paper by Walter Baade and Fritz Zwicky (1934), was published three decades before the first direct observational evidence for the existence of neutron stars was uncovered. It still informs the standard picture of neutron star production in the Galaxy. We examine herein some recent evidence bearing on this question which has been derived from Observatory X-ray observations of supernova remnants and radio pulsars. In particular, the discovery that X-ray synchrotron nebulae are found surrounding most young ( 106 yr) pulsars observed to date is discussed. We explore the implications of the lack of such nebulae in the majority of supernova remnants (SNR) for the properties and frequency of neutron star formation in supernova events.  相似文献

Alfvén waves have been invoked as an important mechanism of particle acceleration in stellar winds of cool stars. After their identification in the solar wind they started to be studied in winds of stars located in different regions of the HR diagram. We discuss here some characteristics of these waves and we present a direct application in the acceleration of late-type stellar winds.  相似文献

High energy stereoscopic system (HESS) is a recent operational detector dedicated to the observation of γ-rays in the very high energy range. Situated in Namibia, it is composed of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes and gives a significant improvement in sensitivity and in accuracy of the reconstructed γ-ray parameters. First results on observations of pulsar wind nebulae are reported here. The binary system PSR B1259-63/SS 2883 has been detected in 2004 around the periastron, showing clear flux variations. The pulsar wind nebula around PSR B1706-44 has been observed and upper limits on its flux have been derived.  相似文献

Stellar winds are found in hot and luminous stars of all types. We see evidence of these winds in P Cygni profiles of resonance lines in the UV spectral regions, and obtain density information from them, and from optical emission lines and from free-free radiation in the infrared and radio continua from the ionized plasma. Data recently acquired from the IUE satellite are now sufficient to enable us to outline the broad parameters of these winds. It is found that for the hottest stars, those of 0-type, the mass loss rate ? is proportional to Lα. A proportionality between ? and L is predicted by the theory of radiatively driven winds; the value for α is also anticipated by the details of the theory. The dispersion of individual stellar values may be due to observational uncertainty alone, but it may also suggest that other physical parameters affect the stellar winds. The kinetic energy input of the stellar winds to the interstellar medium is considerable and may, in aggregate, be of the same order as the contribution of supernovae.  相似文献

Selected results from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer All-Sky Monitor are presented to illustrate the phenomenology of the light curves. The sensitivity to periodic intensity variations is indicated by the folded light curve of AM Her. The gray line between transient and persistent sources is emphasized. Light curves of a range of systems comprising black holes or neutron stars and low and high mass companion stars show that the behavior of these systems is often, but not always, characteristic.  相似文献

This paper reviews the multi-wavelength properties of two groups of pulsars, the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and the Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs), that are generally interpreted as isolated neutron stars with strong magnetic fields of 1014–1015 G. Most of these sources have now been observed at different wavelengths, from the radio band to hard X-rays. Several new members of these classes have been discovered in the last few years, due to their transient nature. The distinction between AXPs and SGRs is becoming less evident, as more observations are collected which show similar properties in all these sources.  相似文献

Three recent developments in the field of formation and evolution of neutron stars and black holes in binaries are addressed:
• The finding that there is a class of neutron stars, formed in interacting binaries, that do not receive kick velocities in their birth events. This finding is particularly important for our understanding of the formation – and formation rates – of double neutron stars. It is argued that these low-kick neutron stars, which tend to have low masses, are formed by a different physical mechanism than the neutron stars that receive large kick velocities at birth.

• The occurrence of velocity kicks in the formation events of stellar black holes.

• The nature of the companions of millisecond X-ray pulsars.

In this paper I discuss the lack of observational evidence that magnetars are formed as rapidly rotating neutron stars. Supernova remnants containing magnetars do not show the excess of kinetic energy expected for such a formation scenario, nor is there any evidence for a relic pulsar wind nebula. However, it could be that magnetars are formed with somewhat slower rotation periods, or that not all excess rotational energy was used to boost the explosion energy, for example as a result of gravitational radiation. Another observational tests for the rapid initial period hypothesis is to look for statistical evidence that about 1% of the observed supernovae have an additional 1040–1044 erg/s excess energy during the first year, caused by the spin down luminosity of a magnetar.  相似文献

The recent detection of a young pulsar powering “the Mouse”, G359.23  0.82, as well as detailed imaging of surrounding nebular X-ray emission, have motivated us to investigate the structural details and polarization characteristics of the radio emission from this axisymmetric source with a supersonic bow shock. Using polarization data at 3.6 and 6 cm, we find that the magnetic field wraps around the bow-shock structure near the apex of the system, but downnstream runs parallel to the inferred direction of the pulsar’s motion. The rotation measure (RM) distribution of the Mouse also suggests that the low degree of polarization combined with a high RM ahead of the pulsar result from internal plasma within the bow-shock region. In addition, using sub-arcsecond radio image of the Mouse, we identify modulations in the brightness distribution of the Mouse that may be associated with the unshocked pulsar wind behind the pulsar. Lastly, we discuss the relationship between the Mouse and its neighboring shell-type supernova remnant G359.1  0.5 and argue that these two sources could potentially have the same origin.  相似文献

With the advent of high resolution space observations with high sensitivity, stellar atmospheric research has entered a new phase of rapid development. All stars, and especially hot stars, are now recognized to have atmospheric characteristics that were not suspected before. All hot stars that we can observe with sufficient accuracy show chromospheres and coronae indicative of non-radiative energy fluxes as well as mass loss; these phenomena exhibit a very great range in magnitude among different stars and, in several cases, they are variable in time. These discoveries have pointed out the need for determining the atmospheric structures of hot stars and, ultimately, of determining the mechanisms responsible for the likely common origin of chromospheres-coronae and mass fluxes. This paper will focus on these observational aspects of hot stars -mainly Be stars and OB-normal stars will be treated here- and on the constraints that the observations impose upon models for these stellar atmospheres.  相似文献

Recent pulsar surveys, especially those using the multibeam receiver on the Parkes radio telescope, have more than doubled the number of known pulsars, bringing the current total to about 1720. Of these, 171 have millisecond periods, 126 are members of binary systems and 99 are associated with globular clusters. Binary pulsars may be divided into several distinct groups depending on their observed properties such as pulsar period and age, binary period, eccentricity and companion mass. These groups all have different evolutionary histories. Correlations between the various properties are discussed using the increased samples now available. The Parkes Pulsar Timing Array is a project which has the goal of using timing observations of millisecond pulsars to make a direct detection of gravitational waves. The parameters and present status of the project are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Forty years passed since the optical identification of the first isolated neutron star (INS), the Crab pulsar. 25 INSs have been now identified in the optical (O), near-ultraviolet (nUV), or near-infrared (nIR), hereafter UVOIR, including rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs), magnetars, and X-ray-dim INSs (XDINSs), while deep investigations have been carried out for compact central objects (CCOs), Rotating RAdio transients (RRATs), and high-magnetic field radio pulsars (HBRPs). In this review I describe the status of UVOIR observations of INSs, their emission properties, and I present the results from recent observations.  相似文献
