Automobile navigation systems based on dead reckoning, map matching, satellite positioning and other navigation technologies are under active development. ``Map intelligent' systems achieve high relative accuracy by matching dead-reckoned paths with road geometry encoded in a digital map data base that may also serve other functions such as vehicle routing and geocoding. Satellite-based navigation systems achieve high absolute accuracy but require dead reckoning augmentation because of signal aberrations in the automotive environment. Future systems will probably include multiple navigation technologies. Issues influencing the design of future systems include safety concerns regarding the driver interface, and the future availability of comprehensive map data bases, real-time traffic data, and mobile data communication links necessary for on-board generation of optimum routes.  相似文献

Titan’ atmosphere shows some similarities with that of the Earth, in terms of composition and surface pressure. Also, its seasonal cycle is similar, as Titan’ obliquity is about 27°(23°,5 for the Earth), although it is about 30 times as long. Titan’ haze exhibits an albedo contrast (NSA for North-South Asymmetry) that is changing seasonally. From the analysis of Voyager and Hubble Space Telescope data, we learned that at short visible wavelengths, the albedo of the winter hemisphere is lower by 10-20% than that of the summer hemisphere. This asymmetry peaks at 450 nm and reaches maximum amplitude around Titan’ equinoxes. It reverses in about five years, faster than a season which spans seven years. At longer wavelengths, longward of 700 nm, the asymmetry is inverted. The NSA reversal process in the red and in the UV seems to lead the reversal in the blue by 1 or 2 years. No valid explanation exists for this lag, at least in the red. The results from a recent model which couples atmospheric dynamics, haze microphysics and transport, as well as photochemistry, show that the NSA and its seasonal changes can be explained by an accumulation of haze particles at the winter pole. This is due to the pole-to-pole Hadley circulation pattern that is present during most of Titan’ year and rapidly disrupts at the time of the equinoxes. This model can also explain the observed cooler stratospheric temperatures and higher abundances of heavy hydrocarbons and nitriles in the winter polar region. In addition, it provides a mechanism for the formation of a detached haze layer around 300–400 km altitude, as well as the existence of a polar hood. Thus, it appears that the latitudinal contrasts we observe on Titan are conveniently tracing for us the dynamical behavior of its atmosphere.  相似文献

In the first fifty years after Edwin Hubble announced a linear relationship between distances and redshifts of external galaxies, the accepted value of his constant dropped by (or the Universe expanded and aged by) a factor of 5 to 10. More recently, different groups, often using nearly the same data, have passionately defended distance scales that differ by about a factor of two. The sections of this review explore (1) the history of extragalactic distance scales, (2) the relationships between the Hubble constant, H 0, and other cosmological parameters, (3) types of distance indicators, (4) ways of measuring distances in practice, (5) values of H 0 reported recently on the basis of these methods, (6) the continuing discrepancies between the 'long' and 'short' distance scales, and (7) prospects for future convergence on a single, global value of H, so that we can all get back to doing other things. The units of the Hubble constant are km s-1 Mpc-1 (or reciprocal time), and no one now strongly favors any value outside the range 40–90 km s-1 Mpc-1 (time scales of 11–25 Gyr).  相似文献

Using the Mass Time-of-Flight Spectrometer (MTOF)—part of the Charge, Elements, Isotope Analysis System (CELIAS)—onboard the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, we derive the nickel isotopic composition for the isotopes with mass 58, 60 and 62 in the solar wind. In addition we measure the elemental abundance ratio of nickel to iron. We use data accumulated during ten years of SOHO operation to get sufficiently high counting statistics and compare periods of different solar wind velocities. We compare our values with the meteoritic ratios, which are believed to be a reliable reference for the solar system and also for the solar outer convective zone, since neither element is volatile and no isotopic fractionation is expected in meteorites. Meteoritic isotopic abundances agree with the terrestrial values and can thus be considered to be a reliable reference for the solar isotopic composition. The measurements show that the solar wind elemental Ni/Fe-ratio and the isotopic composition of solar wind nickel are consistent with the meteoritic values. This supports the concept that low-FIP elements are fed without relative fractionation into the solar wind. Our result also confirms the absence of substantial isotopic fractionation processes for medium and heavy ions acting in the solar wind.  相似文献

Virtually all of the medical devices utilizing electronics will contain a micro or minicomputer by 1990. These devices accounted for $7 billion in U.S. sales in 1984. Their capabilities can provide the means for new or greatly improved medical procedures, and ensure greater patient safety. However, these benefits can easily be compromised if ``computer safety' is not practiced in the design, manufacturing, testing and clinical use of these devices. Along with a trend to wider usage, the number of recalls of medical devices due to computer-related problems has approximately doubled in the last five years. ``Computer-caused' problems are often not recognized or reported as such, resulting in an underestimation of the prevalence of this type of problem. Our study of technical factors causing problems in computerized devices revealed that software quality assurance (SQA), the quality of the ac power, and electromagnetic interference are primary factors. Selected design and QA techniques that are well-known in military-aerospace industries can be used to prevent the most prevalent problems occurring in computerized medical devices, without significantly affecting overall device manufacturing costs.  相似文献

Information about the composition of volatiles in the Martian atmosphere and interior derives from Viking spacecraft and ground-based measurements, and especially from measurements of volatiles trapped in Martian meteorites, which contain several distinct components. One volatile component, found in impact glass in some shergottites, gives the most precise measurement to date of the composition of Martian atmospheric Ar, Kr, and Xe, and also contains significant amounts of atmospheric nitrogen showing elevated 15N/14N. Compared to Viking analyses, the 36Ar/132Xe and 84Kr/132Xe elemental ratios are larger in shergottites, the 129Xe/132Xe ratio is similar, and the 40Ar/36Ar and 36Ar/38Ar ratios are smaller. The isotopic composition of atmospheric Kr is very similar to solar Kr, whereas the isotopes of atmospheric Xe have been strongly mass fractionated in favor of heavier isotopes. The nakhlites and ALH84001 contain an atmospheric component elementally fractionated relative to the recent atmospheric component observed in shergottites. Several Martian meteorites also contain one or more Martian interior components that do not show the mass fractionation observed in atmospheric noble gases and nitrogen. The D/H ratio in the atmosphere is strongly mass fractionated, but meteorites contain a distinct Martian interior hydrogen component. The isotopic composition of Martian atmospheric carbon and oxygen have not been precisely measured, but these elements in meteorites appear to show much less variation in isotopic composition, presumably in part because of buffering of the atmospheric component by larger condensed reservoirs. However, differences in the oxygen isotopic composition between meteorite silicate minerals (on the one hand) and water and carbonates indicate a lack of recycling of these volatiles through the interior. Many models have been presented to explain the observed isotopic fractionation in Martian atmospheric N, H, and noble gases in terms of partial loss of the planetary atmosphere, either very early in Martian history, or over extended geological time. The number of variables in these models is large, and we cannot be certain of their detailed applicability. Evolutionary data based on the radiogenic isotopes (i.e., 40Ar/36Ar, 129Xe/132Xe, and 136Xe/132Xe ratios) are potentially important, but meteorite data do not yet permit their use in detailed chronologies. The sources of Mars' original volatiles are not well defined. Some Martian components require a solar-like isotopic composition, whereas volatiles other than the noble gases (C, N, and H2O) may have been largely contributed by a carbonaceous (or cometary) veneer late in planet formation. Also, carbonaceous material may have been the source of moderate amounts of water early in Martian history.  相似文献

Ion optics are crucial components of ion thrusters and the study of the different ion extraction solutions used since the beginning of the electric propulsion era is essential to understand the evolution of ion engines. This work describes ion engine grids' main functions, parameters and issues related to thermal expansion and sputter erosion, and then introduces a review of ion optics used for significant launched and tested ion thrusters since 1970. Configurations, geometries, materials and fabrication methods are analyzed to understand when typical ion thrusters use two or three grids, what are the thicknesses and aperture sizes of the screen, accelerator and decelerator grids, why molybdenum and carbon-based materials such as pyrolytic graphite and carbon–carbon are the best available options for ion optics and what is the manufacturing method for each material.  相似文献
