Clusters of galaxies are filled with a hot teneous plasma which is emitting soft X-rays over very extended regions. The ROSAT observatory with its high resolution and high sensitivity X-ray telescope allows to image nearby clusters in great detail and is therefore ideally suited to study the structure and morphology of galaxy clusters. In particular the distribution of the intracluster gas can be mapped, some information on the temperature structure of the gas can be obtained, the gravitational mass can be infered, and the dynamical state of the clusters can be investigated. Results of such studies for some nearby clusters as Virgo, Perseus and Coma are presented. Gas mass fractions of the total gravitational mass of the cluster in excess of 10 to 15% are infered from X-ray observations where the cluster emission can be traced out to an Abell radius (3 Mpc). If these values are taken to be representative for the matter composition in the Universe it has interesting consequences for cosmology as for example for the nucleosythesis models and the mean density of the Universe.  相似文献

EXOSAT CMA and GSPC observations of the Perseus Cluster of galaxies are reported. The soft X-ray image data confirm the earlier Einstein Observatory results in terms of the density distribution radially outward from NGC1275. We have used the GSPC spectral data at higher energies to study the strength of the X-ray continuum and of the Fe line emission over the cluster. An asymmetry is found in the distribution of the hot gas around NGC1275, which is consistent with the E-W direction of the ellipticity discovered at soft X-rays by the Einstein Observatory.  相似文献

ROSAT HRI images were obtained for two clusters of galaxies which contain strong cooling flows, A2029 and 2A0335+096. These observations confirm that gas is cooling at rates of in A2029 and in 2A0335+096. In both clusters, the X-ray emission from the inner cooling flow regions (r 100 kpc) is very inhomogeneous, with the X-ray surface brightness being dominated by a number of X-ray emitting filaments. Using the crude spectral resolution of the HRI, we show that these filaments are the result of excess emission, rather than foreground X-ray absorption. Although there are uncertainties in the pointing, many of the X-ray features in the cooling flow region of 2A0335+096 correspond to features in H optical line emission. This indicates that the 104 K gas originates through the cooling of hot X-ray emitting gas. The gas is the filaments is too dense to be in hydrostatic equilibrium, and it is likely that other forces such as rotation, turbulence, and magnetic fields influence the dynamical state of the gas. The filaments may be supported in part by magnetic fields and may be connected with the filaments of very strong Faraday rotation seen in several nearly cooling flows.  相似文献

The Yohkoh soft X-ray telescope obtains several images every 90 minutes. Data from the declining phase of the solar cycle have been used to compare the X-ray signal with other indicators of activity and to study coronal heating. X-ray emission from a north polar coronal hole is found broadly consistent with results of previous EUV observations. In diffuse emission regions, temperature rises to around 2.2 MK and levels off in the height range 1.5 – 1.9 RO. Such emission underlies streamers and may be the source of the low-speed solar wind. X-ray signatures for Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) events which involve the detection of reduced X-ray intensities in the corona, have been developed with Yohkoh data. CME observations are described  相似文献

We report multi-wavelength investigation of the pre-impulsive phase of the 13 December 2006 X-class solar flare. We use hard X-ray data from the anticoincidence system of spectrometer onboard INTEGRAL (ACS) jointly with soft X-ray data from the GOES-12 and Hinode satellites. Radio data are from Nobeyama and Learmonth solar observatories and from the Culgoora Solar Radio Spectrograph. The main finding of our analysis is a spiky increase of the ACS count rate accompanied by surprisingly gradual and weak growth of microwave emission and without detectable radio emission at meter and decimeter wavelengths about 10 min prior to the impulsive phase of the solar flare. At the time of this pre-flare hard X-ray burst the onset of the GOES soft X-ray event has been reported, positive derivative of the GOES soft X-ray flux started to rise and a bright spot has appeared in the images of the Hinode X-ray telescope (XRT) between the flare ribbons near the magnetic inversion line close to the sources of thermal and non-thermal hard X-ray emission observed by Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) during the flare. These facts we consider as evidences of solar origin of the increased pre-flare ACS count rate. We briefly discuss a possible cause of the pre-flare emission peculiarities.  相似文献

In the past three years, a new era of study of globular clusters has begun with multiwavelength observations from the current generation of astronomical telescopes in space. We review the recent results obtained from our studies of compact binaries and x-ray sources in globulars with ROSAT and HST as well as our balloon-borne hard x-ray telescope EXITE and ground-based observations (CTIO). With ROSAT, we have obtained the most sensitive high resolution soft x-ray images of clusters which show multiple low luminosity sources in cluster cores that are likely indicative of the long-sought population of cataclysmic variables (CVs). We have obtained deep H images of two clusters with HST and found CV candidates for 3 of the ROSAT sources in the core of NGC 6397. New CTIO imaging and spectroscopy of two ‘dim source’ fields in ω-Cen are also described. With EXITE we carried out the first hard x-ray imaging observations of the cluster 47 Tuc; such studies can ultimately limit the populations of millisecond pulsars and pulsar emission mechanisms. A long ROSAT exposure on 47 Tuc also shows probable cluster diffuse emission, possibly due to hot gas from ablating millisecond pulsars. Multiwavelength studies of globular clusters may provide new constraints on problems as diverse as the origin of CVs and LMXBs and the origin of hot gas in globulars.  相似文献

The observations of X-ray Nova in Musca (GRS1124-684) by two coded mask telescopes on board GRANAT observatory provided spectral data in broad 3 – 1300 keV band. During these observations, spanned over a year, the Nova was detected in a three apparently different spectral states, corresponding to different epochs of the soft X-ray light curve: (1) A spectrum with two distinct components (soft, below 8 keV and hard power law tail with slope 2.5, detected up to 300 keV). The soft emission changed gradually with characteristic decay time around 30 days, while power law component exhibited strong variability on the time scales of several hours and decreased much more slowly. (2) A soft spectrum (without hard power law tail), observed during the “kick” of the soft X-ray light curve. (3) A hard power law spectrum with slope 2.2. Thus, while the 3 – 300 keV luminosity decreased by more than order of magnitude, the source passed through all spectral states known for galactic black hole candidates (Cyg X-1, GX339-4, 1E1740.7-2942, GRS1758-258 etc.).

On January 20–21 1991, the SIGMA telescope aboard GRANAT detected a relatively narrow variable emission line near 500 keV (Fig.1,2) with net flux ≈ 6 · 10−3 phot/s/cm2, most probably related with electron-positron annihilation processes, occurring in the source /1–4/. Additional excess above power law continuum, centered around 200 keV, was found during this observation.  相似文献

We review the first observations of globular clusters obtained with the X-ray telescope on board of the ROSAT satellite. In the All-Sky Survey, all known bright sources and two new transient sources were detected. In addition a super-soft source was found in NGC5272. Concerning the dim sources, the survey suggests that those outside the core of ω Cen are not related to the cluster. The survey further improved by one or two magnitudes on many upper limits previously obtained by the HEAO-1 satellite. Pointed observations have improved the positional accuracy of a number of sources, and added to the number of known dim sources. In 47 Tuc, the known central source is resolved into 4 separate sources, which we argue are all soft X-ray transients. A comparison with observations of the old open cluster M67 leads us to suggest that some of the dim sources may be conglomerates of a large number of RS Can Ven type binaries.  相似文献

We have statistically investigated the infrared luminosity of clusters of galaxies in comparison with the known tracers of the cluster mass like the X-ray luminosity and the cluster richness (e.g. the number of member galaxies). Our results show that there is a clear positive correlation of the infrared luminosity with the cluster mass. Quantitatively speaking, the infrared luminosity is on average 20 times higher than the X-ray luminosity. Moreover, the infrared luminosity increases with the redshift. This probably shows that a major part of this infrared luminosity is due to star formation in the member galaxies. Another possible contribution would be the thermal emission from dust particles in the diffuse intracluster medium. However our method does not allow us to infer conclusions about this second hypothesis. Depending on their size and abundance, such particles would contribute to the infrared luminosity of galaxy cluster and have an impact on the cooling function of the baryons and thus on the formation of the large scale structures. This is an important cosmological question which still remains open.  相似文献

We present preliminary results from analyses of hard X-ray and optical observations of a soft X-ray selected sample. We created a small but complete sample with 20 of the softest and brightest objects with low Galactic absorption from the ROSAT bright soft X-ray selected radio-quiet AGN sample. This sample consists of 10 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and 10 broad-line Seyfert galaxies. We analyze ASCA data in the 0.6–10 keV band and optical spectra from ground-based telescopes. We investigate the photon indices in the hard X-ray band, soft excesses in the ASCA band, and optical emission line properties. The photon indices in the 2–10 keV band are nominal for both narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies in each class compared with other heterogeneous samples. All of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies show soft excesses, but this component seems to be less significant for broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. There seems to be a trend of steeper X-ray spectra to be accompanied by narrower Hβ for narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, but this is not extended to the larger velocity width regime of broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and no clear trend is seen among them.  相似文献

We present here results obtained from three BeppoSAX observations of the transient X-ray pulsar GRO J1948+32 carried out during the declining phase of its 2000 November–2001 June outburst. Timing analysis of the data clearly shows a 18.7 s pulsation in the X-ray light curves in 0.1–100 keV energy band. The pulse profile of GRO 1948+32 is characterized by a broad peak with a sharp rise followed by a narrow dip. The dip in the pulse profile shows very strong energy dependence. Phase-averaged spectroscopy obtained with three of the BeppoSAX instruments shows that the 0.1–100 keV energy spectrum is described by a Comptonized component, a weak blackbody component (7% of the total emission) for soft X-rays, a narrow and weak iron emission line at 6.7 keV and low column density of material in the line of sight. The results obtained from the analysis are discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The X-ray background intensity around galaxies and rich clusters of galaxies is investigated in three energy bands using the ROSAT All-Sky Survey maps. It is found that an amplitude of the XRB enhancements surrounding the Abell clusters and high density areas in the Lick galaxy counts depends on photon energy. Excess flux generated in the surrounding of the galaxy concentrations is consistent with the thermal emission by hot gas postulated by hydrodynamic simulations.  相似文献

SN 1006 is one of the supernova remnants (SNRs) with relatively low-temperature electrons, considering the young age of just 1000 years. We carried out SN 1006 mapping observations with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS) and the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) onboard Suzaku, the fifth Japanese X-ray satellite. Thanks to the excellent spectral resolution of XIS in the soft X-ray band, H-like and He-like oxygen emission lines were clearly detected, and we could make a map of the line intensity, and as well as a flux and the photon index of nonthermal component. We found that these parameters have spatial dependences from region to region in the SNR; the north region is bright in nonthermal, while dim in thermal; the east region is bright in both nonthermal and thermal; the inner region shows dim nonthermal and bright thermal emission. The photon index is the smallest in the north region.  相似文献

We study a solar flare hard X-ray (HXR) source observed by the Reuven Ramaty high energy solar spectroscopic imager (RHESSI) in which the HXR emission is almost entirely in a coronal loop so dense as to be collisionally thick at electron energies up to ∼45−60 keV. This contrasts with most events previously reported in which the HXR emission is primarily from the loop footpoints in the collisionally dense chromosphere. In particular, we show that the high loop column densities inferred from the GOES and RHESSI soft X-ray emission measure and the volume of the flare loop are consistent with the coronal thick-target interpretation of the HXR images and spectra. The high column densities observed already at the very beginning of the impulsive phase are explained by chromospheric evaporation during a preflare which, as Nobeyama 17 GHz radio images reveal, took place in the same set of nested loops as the main flare.

It is widely recognized that a knowledge of the X-ray properties of high-z radio loud/quiet quasars (RLQs/RQQs) would have important consequences for probing the conditions of the early Universe, studying the evolution of quasars, and assessing quasar contributions to the CXB. In distant active galactic nuclei (AGN) we can detect only the quasars having high luminosities or collimated beams with current X-ray astronomy satellites. We have also detected more than ten RLQs above z=2 with ASCA. We have observed 8 high z RQQs above z=2, but have not detected the higher z RQQs, above z=2.5. A considerable fraction of the high z RLQs show excess absorption over Galactic column densities, while most high z RQQs do not indicate excess absorption, although the samples are small. The X-ray photon index of RLQs is smaller than that of RQQs. The two RLQs above z=4 are very flat, suggesting that they are blazar-like AGN. A long term observation of RQQ, H1400#10 (z=2.078) did not indicate an Fe emission line, giving a weaker upper limit than a typical line intensity of Seyfert 1 galaxies.  相似文献

The black hole candidate Cygnus X-1 was observed in the hard X ray - soft γ ray energy range by the MISO telescope on two different occasions: in September 1979 and May 1980. We have measured two hard X-ray states of the source: in 1979 the observed spectrum confirms the superlow state measured in the same period by the HEAO-3 satellite, while in 1980 the MISO X-ray data are consistent with the so called low state of Cygnus X-1. In both occasions, no γ -ray excess has been observed above 200 KeV.  相似文献

The Crab was observed in a balloon flight from Palestine/Texas on 9/28/81 at hard X-ray energies (20–200 keV). The light curve is significantly sharper than reported previously for this energy range. The pulse-averaged as well as the interpulse spectra show breaks in our energy-range. The variation of spectral index across the pulse has an amplitude similar to that found at lower energies by OSO-8 and larger than reported by HEAO-1 A4 at hard X-rays. For a sharp emission line at 77 keV a 99% upper limit of 1.0*10−3 photons/ cm2 sec can be placed, a factor of 4 lower than line fluxes reported previously. Pulse-shape fits to the optical, X-ray, hard X-ray and gamma ray light-curves reveal a consistent picture of the origin of the interpulse and off-pulse emission, the breaks in the spectra and the variation of spectral index, providing arguments against a thermal component and also a polar cap emission model for NP0532.  相似文献

The ROSAT All-Sky Survey has for the first time permitted a synoptic view of the soft X-ray sky with high sensitivity. In this paper, we discuss the X-ray properties of known cataclysmic variables (CVs) as observed in the Survey and present a status report on programs to identify CVs among the newly discovered ROSAT X-ray sources. Of 170 CVs with known orbital period, 92 were detected in the Survey and 22 of these fall in the bright-source category with more than 0.5 PSPC cts/s. Among the new bright sources, so far 19 have been identified as CVs and 3 as CV candidates, about doubling the census. We present spectra and light curves of known and new systems and discuss the origin of the X-ray emission in the different subclasses of CVs.  相似文献

A study on solar coronal activities related to the 11-year activity cycle is presented from the Yohkoh soft X-ray observations. Yohkoh was launched in August 1991, just after the solar maximum of the cycle 22 and continues to observe the Sun in the declining phase of the magnetic activity cycle toward the solar minimum. The soft X-ray flux from the whole Sun in the declining phase essentially decreases with the size of active regions. The X-ray intensity in quiet regions in the declining phase decreases with the magnetic flux observed at the photosphere. The whole-Sun soft X-ray flux does not monotonically decrease, but there are periodic enhancements of the flux with about a one-year interval. The activity appears as bright clusters in the butterfly diagram of the soft X-ray intensity and corresponds to the emergence of complexes of activity in the sunspot zones. The high-latitude activity is also studied, and we find that the X-ray intensity of high-latitude regions fluctuates with time scale of about one year.  相似文献
