Intercomparisons of the zonally averaged outgoing longwave fluxes estimated from 10 μm radiance observations on NOAA polar orbiters and flat plate observations on the Nimbus 6 ERB experiment have shown the NOAA estimates to be higher than the ERB measurements. Our analysis shows that the operational technique systematically overestimates calculated fluxes for middle and high cloud conditions. A different radiative transfer model and new assumptions concerning clouds reduce the NOAA-ERB flux difference by approximately 35%.  相似文献

The planetary outgoing longwave radiation has been estimated since 1974 from two different series of NOAA operational polar spacecraft. The first series provided data from June 1974 through February 1978 and was designated “SR” for the scaning radiometers used at that time. This data set has been used in a variety of radiation budget and climate studies, such as that by Ohring and Gruber, 1983. The second satellite system is the currently operational TIROS-N series of satellites. Data from this series began in January 1979 and are continuing. In both systems, estimates of the outgoing longwave radiation are obtained from narrow spectral interval (10–12 μm) window radiances. A comparison is made of the estimates from the two different series of satellites in order to arrive at an assessment of their compatibility. This is important since the SR observations were taken at approximately 0900 and 2100 local times, while the TIROS-N data alternate between 0730-1930 and 0300-1500 local times. In addition, there is a period of overlap between the TIROS-N data and the broad band (5–50 μm) Nimbus 7 EArth radiation budget data. A comparison of those two data sets indiciate excellent agreement generally within about 1–2 Wm?2 on the monthly means on global and hemispherical scales. Comparisons of zonal averages indicate maximum differences as large as 9 Wm?2.Evidence is presented to suggest that observations taken at different local observing times may be biased by the diurnal variation of emitted flux, even on global scales.  相似文献

The effects of snow and cloud cover on planetary albedo are examined using observations from NOAA polar orbiting satellites. Reflected radiation was measured in the visible range (0.5 – 0.7 μm). Planetary albedos resulting from different cloud/snow cover conditions are compared using Northern Hemisphere snow cover maps, surface weather charts, satellite photos and data on land surface types. None of the cases studied show that concurrent cloud and snow cover produces significantly different planetary albedos than cloud cover alone. Cloud cover alone is found to yield higher planetary albedos than snow cover alone; the difference being greatest over forested areas. With and without snow cover present, clear-sky planetary albedos over farming and grazing lands (snow(0.45), no snow(0.15)) are found to be significantly higher than those over forested regions (snow(0.33), no snow(0.11)). Variations in satellite zenith angle are not found to produce significant effects in most cases studied.  相似文献

In this paper, the shortwave and longwave anisotropy for clear sky Indian desert scene has been estimated using long-term surface data, radiative transfer calculations and Helmholtz reciprocity for missing values. This study is important in the perspective of the low inclination satellites like Megha–Tropiques (MT) mission, carrying Scanner for Radiation Budget (ScaRaB) payload, which will provide broadband radiative fluxes at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). Due to low inclination angle, the angular models for clear sky land scenes for the MT-ScaRaB orbits will be dominated by desert points. The Angular Distribution Models (ADMs) determined in this study were compared with existing desert models. It is observed that for longwave radiation, the largest disagreement is observed for higher values of viewing zenith angle, especially for the summer season, where the difference in flux can reach up to 13 W/m2. For the shortwave radiation, higher values of both solar zenith angle and viewing zenith angle cause largest incongruity in the computed albedo from the different models, suggesting the need of caution in interpretation of the flux computations from these bins. In fact at the higher solar zenith angle bin, the disparity in albedo can go up to 6.4%.  相似文献

In simple energy balance climate models all physical and dynamical processes are parameterized in terms of the single unknown variable: the surface temperature. To simulate the ice-albedo feedback, the surface albedo is usually assumed to be a function of surface temperature. But to compute the absorbed solar radiation in such models one requires the top-of-the atmosphere albedo: the planetary albedo. In the present study, a simple linear relationship is derived between planetary albedo and surface albedo for the case of clear skies. The relationship is based upon a regression equation derived from simulations and has a standard error of estimate of 0.028. The estimation of planetary albedo from surface albedo is checked by comparing zonally averaged clear-sky planetary albedos, estimated from zonally averaged surface albedos, to satellite determinations of zonally averaged minimum albedos for monthly mean conditions. The minimum albedos are assumed to be representative of the clear-sky planetary albedos. The results show root-mean square differences of 0.05 between the estimated clear-sky planetary albedos and the minimum albedos.More accurate relationships can be obtained if one uses an additional parameter - the solar zenith angle. In this case, the standard errors of estimate are reduced to 0.017 for a zenith angle of 0°, 0.018 for a zenith angle of 60° and 0.021 for a zenith angle of 85°.  相似文献

New and current algorithms for estimating the broadband planetary albedo from NOAA satellite narrowband observations are testes by applying them to retrospective NOAA-9 AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution) data of 2 July 1985. For comparison, broadband SW fluxes taken by the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) instrument, also on NOAA-9 are used as reference values. In contrast to the current scene-independent model, the new algorithms are all scene-dependent, but differ in the way they are classified by surface, cloud amount and albedo indices. The current operational model produces a global bias of magnitude 5 W/m2 and a strong latitudinal dependence in error. The scene-dependent algorithms yield global biases of less than ±3 W/m2 and have little latitudinal dependence over most of the globe.  相似文献

The U.S. Air Force Real Time Nephanalysis (RT NEPH) is incorporated into the NMC Medium Range Forecast Model (MRF) to explore the impact of cloudiness on the model's radiation parameterization. After transfering to MRF model coordinate, RT NEPH is in qualitative agreement with ERBE Scene ID. The zero-hour “forecast” of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) of 00GMT Nov. 9, 1984 is compared with that derived from NOAA AVHRR observation and the preliminary ERBE result. The comparison shows that the greater difference in OLR are from cloudy sky regions, in spite of qualitative agreement on the structures. The result suggests that for proper simulation of OLR, a refinement of the model cloud parameterization or nephanalysis on the prescribed data would be more effective than on radiative transfer scheme.  相似文献

The extraordinary El-Nino event of 1982–83 started to fade out in the late spring of 1983. However the sea surface temperature of the Eastern Equatorial Pacific still remained warmer than normal in the following summer. To investigate the characteristics of this late transition phase of the 1982–83 El-Nino, the GOES-West satellite data of July and August of 1983 are analyzed. The outgoing longwave radiation field and the distribution of cloudiness, which was derived by using a new threshold technique, are obtained. The longwave radiation field is compared to monthly average climatic indices commonly used at the Climatic Analysis Center. The results of cloud analysis showed some interesting features during the decaying phase of the 1982–83 El-Nino. The diurnal variation of cloudiness indicates that total cloud amounts decrease from 8 GMT to 20 GMT over most of the area. This overall study demonstrates preliminary results of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project of the World Climate Research Program.  相似文献

Two procedure are presented for quantitative estimation of cloud cover (N), type of clouds (C), as well as base of clouds (Cb) and top of clouds (Ct) by using radiosonde data as well as satellite cloud pictures and radiation data. The data obtained in this way can be used as input data in the model for the estimation of the vertical profile of longwave radiative cooling.  相似文献

Cloudiness modulates the radiation budget at the top of the Earth-atmosphere system. For radiation balance studies, for climate diagnostic studies, and for climate modeling studies, it is important to know the sensitivity of both the outgoing longwave radiation and the net (absorbed solar minus outgoing longwave) radiation of the system to changes in cloudiness on a global basis. Based on a 45 month series of NOAA satellite scanning radiometer observations, estimates of the global distribution of these sensitivity parameters are obtained.  相似文献

Components of the earth radiation budget have been calculated on a regular basis since June 1974 (except for a 10 month gap in data in 1978) based on measurements by the scanning radiometers and the advanced very high resolution radiometers on the operational NOAA polar orbiting satellites. A new base set of monthly and seasonal averages of outgoing longwave radiation has been prepared by NOAA's Climate Analysis Center (CAC) for the entire period of record through November 1983. Anomalies relative to these new normals have now been constructed for each month and season in the entire record. In this presentation, some of the more prominent anomalies of outgoing longwave radiation over the past decade are discussed. A major concentration is on the tropics and subtropics where there have been very substantial radiation variations associated with major shifts in convective cloudiness accompanying El Niño/Southern Oscillation events.  相似文献

Continued analysis of Pioneer Venus imaging and polarimetry data indicates that the average cloud-top level circulation is mainly zonal (east to west) with a small meridional component. Presence of planetary scale waves and a possible sun-related component are evident in the data. If the tracked features refer to the same vertical level, then some variability of the circulation would have to be present to account for the Pioneer and Mariner 10 cloud-tracking results. However, the implied balanced flow from the observed thermal structure analysis strongly suggests that at least some of the variations in these observations is due to apparent cloud-top variations and that the circulation itself is relatively stable.Direct cyclostrophic calculations based on the observed thermal structure of the atmosphere yield a balanced zonal circulation with distinct mid-latitude jets (peak velocities about 110–120 ms?1) located between 50 and 40 mb in each hemisphere of the planet near 45° latitude. The calculations which extend to about 40 km altitude from 80 km above the surface agree well with the observed entry probe zonal components and indicate breakdown of the balance condition near the upper and lower boundaries at low latitudes. The balanced flow results are consistent with the Mariner 10 and Pioneer cloud tracked estimates of the zonal circulation provided the effective altitude of the tracked features is slightly different at different observation periods. The features in the Pioneer Venus data would then lie on a sloping surface that extends from about 68 km (40 mb) at low latitudes to about 75 km (10 mb) in mid-latitudes. The polarization features would occur on a roughly parallel surface that is 1–2 km above the effective cloud-height surface, and Mariner 10 features would have effective altitudes somewhat lower than the Pioneer ultraviolet features. A slight asymmetry is evident in the balanced zonal circulation arising out of an asymmetry in the thermal field. Finally, the solenoids formed by intersecting isobaric and isosteric (constant specific volume) surfaces deduced from the Pioneer Venus radio occultation data show distinct evidence of a direct meridional circulation that may be important in sustaining the Venus atmospheric circulation.  相似文献

Because space-borne radiometers do not measure the Earth’s outgoing fluxes directly, angular distribution models (ADMs) are required to relate actual radiance measurement to flux at given solar angle, satellite-viewing geometries, surface, and atmospheric conditions. The conversion of one footprint broad-band radiance into the corresponding flux requires therefore one to first characterize each footprint in terms of surface type and cloud cover properties to properly select the adequate ADM.

A snow (and sea-ice) retrieval technique based on spectral measurements from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on board Meteosat 8 is presented. It has been developed to improve the scene identification and thus the ADM selection in the near-real time processing of the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) data at the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium. The improvement in the GERB short wave flux estimations over snow covered scene types resulting from angular conversion using dedicated snow ADMs (e.g., empirical snow ADMs and/or pre-computed theoretical snow ADM) instead of empirical snow-free ADMs is discussed.  相似文献

A method to derive mesoscale area means of surface solar flux densities from a priori knowledge and actual cloudfree satellite radiances is presented. It is based on the concept of the mixed reflection function which can be derived from existing data. Herewith and with actual atmospheric data derived from the operational meteorological network the cloudfree radiation field is computed. By comparison of computed and measured satellite radiance the surface albedo of the model is tuned. In a case study this method is applied to an agricultural region called La Mancha, Spain, and comprehensively checked against airborne radiance measurements. The surface albedo can be determined to about ± 0.01.  相似文献

The dynamical features of the climate system result from the interaction of the atmosphere with the surface. The hope for improving climate prediction, on seasonal and interannual time scales, is based on the premise that slowly varying boundary conditions force well defined predictable patterns of general circulation. It is now recognized that in models of surface climate over land, surface properties should not be regarded as constants and that it is important to specify a realistic value of the surface albedo1 in order to correctly estimate the amount of solar radiation absorbed at the surface. The albedo is also considered by some as an internal dependent parameter of climate, since it time integrates the effects of changes in more variable quantities, such as rainfall. The global nature of the links between forcing and response imply global monitoring of the parameters which control the transfer and feedback of the energy at the surface/atmosphere interface. Satellites can play an important role in resolving the difficult problem of properly representing the average surface albedo over large areas. However, satellites measure only the earth-atmosphere reflectance in narrow spectral intervals, narrow solid angles, and in most cases at a fixed local time. To derive from these observations the effective surface albedo, one has to compute the total reflected planetary flux, integrated over the whole solar spectrum, over all the viewing angles, and over time. A transformation from top of the atmosphere to the surface is also required. In this presentation the implications of atmospheric corrections, bidirectional reflectance, and transformations from narrow spectral bands to the total solar spectrum for albedo derivations will be addressed. Also, the various attempts to derive surface reflectivity and surface albedo from satellites will be reviewed.  相似文献

We present the results of a study of anomalies, which are defined as differences of seasonal means from the data set seasonal means, in the Earth's radiation budget from the analysis of nine years of ten day mean observations derived from the NOAA polar orbiter satellites for the period, 1974–1983. We estimate that the standard deviation in the outgoing longwave flux for this period is less than 12 Wm?2 and typically 7 Wm?2. The results show that there are several geographical areas for which the standard deviation is in excess of 20 Wm?2; in such regions the radiation budget anomalies exceeded these due to natural atmospheric variability. In this paper we discuss the relationship of these anomalies with climatic change.  相似文献

The paper deals with a new method for simultaneous determination of cloud top height and effective cloud cover, using infrared radiance data of satellite-borne instruments. These cloud properties derived from the Selective Chopper Radiometer on the Nimbus 5 satellite are compared with nearly simultaneous observations by radiosondes and with satellite images. Encouraging results for Central-Europe during January, April, July, August and October 1974, as well as numerical simulations indicate that the method proposed here, would be useful also for global application. Another advantage of the described procedure are the small amount of computing time, and that no other data are required than 3 of infrared channel values, for each sounded spot.  相似文献

The extraction of information on cloud cover from present-day multispectral satellite images poses a challenge to the remote sensing specialist. When approached one pixel at a time, the derived cloud cover parameters are inherently nonunique. More information is needed than is available in the radiances from each channel of an isolated pixel. The required additional information can be obtained for each scene, however, by analyzing the distribution of pixels in the multi-dimensional space of channel radiances. The cluster patterns in this space yield statistical information that points to the most likely solution for that scene. The geostationary and polar orbiting meteorological satellites all have, at a minimum, a solar reflection channel in the visible spectrum and a thermal infrared channel in the 8–12 micron window. With the information from the cluster patterns and application of the equations of radiative transfer, the measurements in those channels will yield cloud cover fraction, optical thickness, and cloud-top temperature for an assumed microphysical model of the cloud layer. Additional channels, such as the 3.7 micron channel on the AVHRR of the polar orbiting meteorological satellites, will will yield information on the microphysical model—e.g., distinguishing small liquid liquid droplets (typical of low level clouds) from large ice particles (typical of cirrus and the tops of cumulonimbus). New channels to be included in future satellite missions will provide information on cloud height, independent of temperature, and on a particle size and thermodynamic phase, independently of each other. A proposed STS mission using lidar will pave the way for the use of active sensors that will provide more precise information on cloud height and probe the structure of thin cirrus and the top layer of of the thicker cloud.  相似文献
