We analyze two solar type III radio bursts that were observed simultaneously by the ICE and Ulysses spacecraft. Both bursts originated behind the solar limb as viewed from either spacecraft. At the time of these events, ICE was in the ecliptic plane at 1 AU and Ulysses was 35° south of the ecliptic plane at 4 AU. For one event on 931117, the ratios of the peak flux densities measured at each spacecraft, at each observing frequency, were consistent with the most probable source locations relative to ICE and Ulysses. The second event on 931004 was a complex burst consisting of two distinct components at high frequencies. At low frequencies, the intensity of the first component decreased rapidly at each spacecraft. The second component, however, dominated the low frequency emission observed at Ulysses but not at ICE. These differences in the observed radiation must be related to the different viewing geometries of the two spacecraft. The measured onset times as a function of observing frequency were consistent with a constant exciter speed through the interplanetary medium and suggest that there are significant propagation delays, especially for the radiation propagating within the ecliptic plane.  相似文献

During a coordinated observations of 2S1636-536 with EXOSAT, Tenma and the 1.4 metre Danish telescope at La Silla, a single burst was detected at all three observatories. The burst was bright with a peak flux of 6 × 10-8 ergs/cm 2 /s and rapid expansion of the blackbody radius. EXOSAT and Tenma agree closely in the values of blackbody radius, temperature and flux which are very similar to the three bursts recently reported by Tenma which appear to reach the Eddington flux limit at their peak. Preliminary analysis of the X-ray and optical timing data reveal that this burst is unusual in having a sharp leading edge in both X-ray and optical data and a very short X-ray-optical delay compared with those previously observed. If confirmed, this result puts significant restraints on the location of the optical reprocessing site.  相似文献

Summary On May 8, 1980, we conducted a 90 minute observation on hard X-ray emission (15-200 keV) from Her X-1, using a large area ( 1500 cm2), low background balloon borne X-ray telescope. The energy resolution of the telescope was 17% FWHM at 60 keV. Her X-1 was at binary phase 0.0725 and 2.7 ± 0.5 days after turn on in the 35 day cycle.Average pulsation light curves were obtained by sorting data into 25 equal bins, according to pulse arrival time, modulo the 1.24 sec pulsation period. The width of the main pulse is energy dependent and in the 45–75 keV region about 30% smaller than in the range from 15 to 30 keV.The data have been analyzed by taking the Her X-1 pulse minus background spectrum, where the pulse count rate is defined in a pulse phase interval around the pulse maximum of the 1.24 sec period. The background spectrum was intermittently obtained by a chopping collimator system.A spectral feature is present in emission at an energy of 49.5 (+ 1.5, -3) keV and a FWHM of 18 (+ 6, -3) keV and in absorption at an energy of 29.5 (+ 1.7, -1.5) keV and a FWHM of 17.0 (+ 2.6, -2.8) keV. The intensity of this line feature in emission is (1.8 ± 0.4) photons/cm sec. The line excess in emission over the continuum (with kT = 6.75 (+ 0.2, -0.4) keV) is 7.  相似文献

We report preliminary results of X-ray and optical observations of the AM Her star HO139-68 during its low state at V 17 to 18. X-rays were detected only during 45 % of the orbital period when the system was optically bright and the radial velocity of the Balmer lines was positive. Our data show no evidence for accretion onto two active poles as indicated by previous X-ray and linear-polarization measurements. We find that the distance of the system based on its K-magnitude is d 130 pc.Based in part on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory at La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

We present a 6.3 hour observation of 4U1624-49 with the EXOSAT Medium Energy experiment. The X-ray light curve is dominated by a series of sharp dips in which the observed flux falls to 25% of the steady level on timescales of seconds. These dips are accompanied by strong variations in the spectral hardness consistent with large changes in the absorbing column density. No evidence is found for any dip periodicity, in contrast to the other four sources in which dip activity has been reported. We discuss the implications of these observations for models of low mass X-ray binaries.  相似文献

We report the results of a study of the 12-hour average distribution functions of high Z nuclei as measured over a 10-day interval on the Ulysses spacecraft at a helioradius of5.2 A.U. We use the good time and atomic mass resolution of the composition aperture of the HI-SCALE instrument to determine the form of the distribution functions for C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe over the energy range 0.5–16 MeV/nucl. We find that the distribution functions of these ions can be organized by characteristic velocities that have values ranging between2000–3500 km/sec over this interval.  相似文献

The Transient Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (TGRS) to be flown aboard the WIND spacecraft is primarily designed to perform high resolution spectroscopy of transient -ray events, such as cosmic -ray bursts and solar flares over the energy range 25 keV to 8.2 MeV with an expected spectroscopic resolution of 3 keV at 1 MeV. The detector itself consists of a 215 cm3 high purityn-type Ge crystal kept at cryogenic temperatures by a passive radiative cooler. The geometric field of view defined by the cooler is 1.8 steradian. To avoid continuous triggers by soft solar events, a thin BeCu Sun-shield around the sides of the cooler has been provided. A passive Mo/Pb occulter, which modulates signals from within ±5° of the ecliptic plane at the spacecraft spin frequency, is used to identify and study solar flares, as well as emission from the galactic plane and center. Thus, in addition to transient event measurements, the instrument will allow the search for possible diffuse background lines and monitor the 511 keV positron annihilation radiation from the galactic center. In order to handle the typically large burst count rates, which can be in excess of 100 kHz, burst data are stored directly in an onboard 2.75 Mbit burst memory with an absolute timing accuracy of ±1.5 ms after ground processing. The memory is capable of storing the entire spectral data set of all but the largest bursts. WIND is scheduled to be launched on a Delta II launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral on November 1, 1994. After injection into a phasing orbit, the spacecraft will execute a double lunar swing-by before being moved into a controlled halo orbit about theL1 Lagrangian point (250R e towards the Sun). This will provide a 5 light-second light travel time with which to triangulate gamma-ray burst sources with Earth-orbiting systems, such as those on-board the Gamma-Ray Observatory (GRO). The response of instrument to transient -ray events such as GRB's and solar flares will be presented as well as the expected response to steady state point sources and galactic center line emission.  相似文献

We report new results obtained from the EXOSAT AO- 1 observation of the intermediate polar V1223 Sgr. The detection of a 12.4 minute period in the medium energy X-ray flux with an associated hardness ratio variation has been previously reported in Osborne et al. (1984a). Further work has revealed: a narrow dip at the phase zero in the folded medium energy light curve; 30% modulation in the low energy X-ray (3000 Lexan) flux; a count rate ratio from 3 filters which allow the presence of a bright low temperature blackbody component (kT = .05 –. 40 KeV); and a phase resolved ME spectrum which must have two or more components when the source is bright. New optical ephemerides show that the X-ray and optical pulses are in phase at an orbital phase of = 0.31.Affiliated to the Astrophysics Division, Space Science Dept., ESA  相似文献

A series of observations of the Virgo cluster of galaxies with the Medium Energy experiment on board EXOSAT are presented. These take the form of two orthogonal scans meeting at M87. The observed count rates have been compared with those obtained with the IPC on board the EINSTEIN observatory and are found to be consistent with the the IPC surface brightness distribution. This fact together with spectral data obtained with Exosat indicates that the region around M87 is more or less isothermal (T 2–3 keV) out to > 80 arc min from the centre. Although a slight hardening is seen near the optical centroid of the cluster the results do not support a model which involves a hot ( 8 keV) intra-cluster medium. A mass of 5 × 1013 solar masses is derived for the inner 90 arc minutes of M87.  相似文献

The advent of far infrared arrays will change fundamentally the means of analyzing observations in this spectral region. Sources much fainter than traditional confusion limits will be extracted from images by using computer algorithms similar to CLEAN or DAOPHOT. We have conducted numerical experiments to evaluate these techniques and show that they will permit long integrations (10,000 sec at 60 m, 200 sec at 100 m) to achieve nearly photon-background-limited performance and hence very deep detection limits. The dominant noise sources—photon noise, confusion by distant galaxies, and confusion by IR cirrus — scale with nearly the same power of the telescope aperture. As a result, the integration times required to reach confusion limits are nearly aperture-independent.  相似文献

We present the results of four observations made by the European Space Agency's EXOSAT Observatory of the X-ray transient 4U1630-47 during its 1984 outburst. We observed marked spectral changes as the source decayed from a maximum observed intensity of 8×10–9 erg/cm2/sec (1.5–10 keV). The spectrum could be modelled by a soft thermal-like component with a high energy power-law tail. The relative contribution of the soft to hard component decreased as the total luminosity decreased. We compare these changes with those observed from the black hole candidate Cyg X-1 when it transitions from a high to a low state. In addition we report the discovery of short timescale intensity variations (down to 50 msec) with a characteristic timescale of 20 sec. We present a precise position for this unidentified source.on leave from Università di Roma Dipartimento di Fisica G. Marconi.  相似文献

Relativistic solar proton events   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Energetic solar flare particles contain rich information concerning mechanisms of particle acceleration on the Sun and subsequent transport through turbulent interplanetary space. Even the most energetic particles, in particular protons with kinetic energy above 500 MeV, may undergo coronal and interplanetary propagation effects, disturbing their accelerated injection spectrum after release from the solar flare. Relativistic solar proton events are recorded by neutron monitors at ground level. A detailed knowledge of the response of these ground-based detectors to the impact by a beam of protons on the top of the atmosphere is required to analyze these observations. The spectral index of arriving protons can be obtained from the response of the world-wide network of neutron monitors provided their directional anisotropy is known. The spectral index may also by determined from the relative enhancements in count rates of two similar detectors at different altitudes but similar asymptotic cones of acceptances, or from the relative enhancements of two detectors with different spectral sensitivities but at the same location of high latitude. Ground level enhancements from solar flare protons have been recorded at Sanae, Antarctica, since 1971 by two neutron monitors with different sensitivities to primary protons in the rigidity range from 1 GV to 5 GV. Spectral indexes of about 20 of these more energetic solar flare proton events have been determined from the two detector enhancements recorded at Sanae. These indexes do not show any increase (softening of the relativistic proton spectra) with increasing heliolongitude away from the preferred IMF connection region as was obtained for 20–80 MeV protons. Furthermore, most of the enhanced count rates show fluctuations larger than statistical, indicative of propagation in a mostly turbulent interplanetary magnetic field.  相似文献

Throughout 1993, as the Ulysses spacecraft traveled from 23° to 45° south heliolatitude, the HI-SCALE instrument on the spacecraft measured a recurrent series of enhanced particle fluxes with a recurrence period of 26.5 days. These particles are accelerated from a background seed population by the corotating interaction regions (CIRs) associated with a southern solar polar coronal hole. Using the Wart detector telescope of the HI-SCALE instrument, we have analyzed the elemental abundances of C, N, O, and Fe relative to He for 0.5–4.0 MeV/nucl ions and Ne, Mg, and Si for 1.0–4.0 MeV/nucl ions in the CIRs. We compare the relative abundances to some previous measurements reported from 1 A.U. as well as with solar photosphere abundances. We note that HI-SCALE measurements of the heliolatitude dependence of the oxygen abundance and spectrum as reported by Lanzerottiet al. (1994) suggest that a substantial fraction of the seed population for the CIR-accelerated oxygen is likely to be the anomalous oxygen component of the cosmic rays.  相似文献

We report initial measurements from the ULECA sensor of the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland experiment on ISEE-1. ULECA is an electrostatic deflection — total energy sensor consisting of a collimator, deflection analyzer and an array of solid state detectors. The position of a given detector, which determines the energy per charge of an incident particle, together with the measured energy determine the particle's charge state. We find that a rich variety of phenomena are operative in the transthermal energy regime (10 keV/Q to 100 keV/Q) covered by ULECA. Specifically, we present observations of locally accelerated protons, alpha particles, and heavier ions in the magnetosheath and upstream of the Earth's bow shock. Preliminary analysis indicates that the behavior of these locally accelerated particles is most similar at the same energy per charge.  相似文献

Results are presented of three 40 d COS-B X-ray observations of Cyg X-3. The shape of the 4.8 h light curve showed variations on all observational time scales. An 20 d periodicity was found in the arrival time of the minimum of the light curve, interpreted as apsidal motion of an orbit with an eccentricity of 0.03.  相似文献

We review aspects of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) that bear on the solar modulation of energetic particles in the heliosphere. We show that the latitudinal and radial gradients of these particles exhibit a 22-year periodicity in concert with the reversal of the Sun's magnetic field. The power-law index of the low energy portion of the energy spectrum of ACRs at the shock in 1996 appears to be -1.3, suggesting that the strength of the solar wind termination shock at the helioequatorial plane is relatively weak, with s 2.8. The rigidity dependence of the perpendicular interplanetary mean free path in the outer heliosphere for particles with rigidities between 0.2 and 0.7 GV varies approximately as R2, where R is particle rigidity. There is evidence that ACR oxygen is primarily multiply charged above 20 MeV/nuc and primarily singly-charged below 16 MeV/nuc. The location of the termination shock was at 65 AU in 1987 and 85 AU in 1994.  相似文献

We present models of the extragalactic background light (EBL) based on several scenarios of galaxy formation and evolution. We have treated galaxy formation with the Press-Schecter approximation for both cold dark matter (CDM) and cold+hot dark matter (CHDM) models, representing a moderate (z f 3) and a late (z f 1) era of galaxy formation respectively. Galaxy evolution has been treated by considering a variety of stellar types, different initial mass functions and star formation histories, and with an accounting of dust absorption and emission. We find that the dominant factor influencing the EBL is the epoch of galaxy formation. A recently proposed method for observing the EBL utilizing the absorption of 0.1 to 10 TeV gamma-rays from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is shown to be capable of discriminating between different galaxy formation epochs. The one AGN viewed in TeV light, Mrk 421, does show some evidence for a cutoff above 3 TeV; based on the EBL models presented here, we suggest that this is due to extinction in the source. The large absorption predicted at energies > 200 GeV for sources at z > 0.5 indicates that observations of TeV gamma-ray bursts (GRB) would constrain or eliminate models in which the GRB sources lie at cosmological distances. Now at University of Chicago, Dept. of Astronomy & Astrophysics.  相似文献

The X-ray emission from Algol is thought to originate in a corona associated with the K star in this system. We report the results of a 35 hr continuous EXOSAT observation through secondary optical eclipse that was designed to measure the structure of the corona. No obvious X-ray eclipse was seen. The spectrum measured by the ME gives a temperature of 2.5 × 107 K, consistent with the hard component previously seen by the Einstein SSS. The soft component previously reported by the SSS would only contribute at most 25% to the count rate seen in the LE (used with Al/P). The lack of a hard X-ray eclipse indicates the dimensions of the higher temperature emission region to be comparable to or greater than the size of the K star. An X-ray flare was detected with a peak luminosity of 1.4 × 1031 erg s-1 and a total duration of 8 hours. The peak temperature was 5.0 keV with an emission measure of 9.4 × 1053 cm-3. The thermal nature of the flare is confirmed by the detection of an iron line with an EW of 2 keV. By equating the observed decay time of the flare to a known cooling law gives a dimension for the flaring loop of 0.3 stellar radii. This is much smaller than the dimensions of the hard component inferred from the lack of an eclipse. It seems probable that the flare occurred in one of the loops responsible for the lower temperature component seen by the SSS.  相似文献

X-ray spectra of the BL Lac type object Mkn 421 and several Seyfert type 1 galaxies; IIIZw2, MCG8-11-11 and NGC 4151, have been obtained using the Leicester University instrument on board the Ariel-6 satellite. The Mkn 421 spectrum is best represented by two powerlaw components, the soft component having 3.4 whilst the hard flux has 1.0. In MCG8-11-11 there is clear evidence for spectral variability between our observation in late 1979 and that of HEAO-1/A2 in 1977. The Ariel-6 spectrum of MCG8-11-11 can be fitted by a powerlaw of index 2.1 together with an iron line at 6.2 keV with an equivalent width of 1.6 keV. The first X-ray spectrum of IIIZw2 is also presented, fitting with a powerlaw we find an index of 1.7. With the exception of NGC 4151 there is no evidence for a significant column of cool material along the line of sight.  相似文献

We present observations of energetic ions from the Ulysses COSPIN Low Energy Telescope in the mid and high-latitude regions of the heliosphere prior to and during the first polar pass of the Ulysses spacecraft. After the encounter with Jupiter, Ulysses started on its journey out-of-the-ecliptic. Between 13°S and 29°S the spacecraft sampled the solar wind from both the streamer belt and the polar coronal hole. Here, co-rotating magnetic structures with forward and reverse shocks and containing accelerated energetic ions were observed. At latitudes greater than 29°S, Ulysses was completely immersed in the solar wind from the polar coronal hole. Here the co-rotating magnetic structures were weaker, and in general had only reverse shocks, but were still capable of accelerating the energetic ions, albeit with reduced intensity. The most recent results show that beyond 50°S, very few if any, reverse shocks are observed. However, accelerated ions from magnetic interaction regions are still observed. We report also on an intensity enhancement at 50°S due to the passage of a high-latitude CME.  相似文献
