A linear stability analysis is applied to determine the onset of oscillatory thermocapillary convection in cylindrical liquid bridges of large Prandtl numbers (4  Pr  50). We focus on the relationships between the critical Reynolds number Rec, the azimuthal wave number m, the aspect ratio Γ and the Prandtl number Pr. A detailed RecPr stability diagram is given for liquid bridges with various Γ. In the region of Pr > 1, which has been less studied previously and where Rec has been usually believed to decrease with the increase of Pr, we found Rec exhibits an early increase for liquid bridges with Γ around one. From the computed surface temperature gradient, it is concluded that the boundary layers developed at both solid ends of liquid bridges strengthen the stability of basic axisymmetric thermocapillary convection at large Prandtl number, and that the stability property of the basic flow is determined by the “effective” part of liquid bridge.  相似文献

As part of our research on the feasibility of producing commodities from lunar regolith by thermal-driven processes with minimal terrestrial precursors we need to characterize, reproduce, and understand thermophysical properties of the molten regolith still unforeseen under the lunar vacuum conditions at a scalable sample size. Two unanticipated phenomena, apparently caused by lunar melt’s surface tension under vacuum, have been revealed in our research work, vacuum void formation and upwards migration. In this paper we present our findings and thinkable explanation on the upwards migration phenomenon experimentally observed and consistently replicated as JSC-1A lunar regolith simulant melted at high vacuum. Upwards migration of molten lunar regolith will make future lunar ISRU’s melting processes both challenging as molten bulk material would migrate upwards along the container’s walls, and also promising on new opportunities for alternative ISRU’s sustainable processes as regolith’s upwards migration takes place in uniformed thin-film pattern. Among the potential ISRU’s processes that might use controlled thermal thin-film-based migration without the necessity of terrestrial precursors are production of feedstock for 3D printing, fractional separation of regolith’s component’s (O2, metals, and alloys) via pyrolysis, film coating, purification of valuables solid crystals including silicon, and fabrication of key elements for microfluidic, and MEMS devices. Thermal upwards migration phenomenon on JSC-1A’s melt is formulated and explained by the authors as due to thermal Marangoni effect (also known as thermo-capillarity) in which temperature gradients within the melt’s bulk and along the crucible’s wall yield the surface tension large enough to supersede the gravitational force and yield the experimentally observed upwards thin-film migration. As far as the authors know, upwards thermal migration of molten JSC-1A (or other lunar simulant regolith) under vacuum has not been reported in the literature. A thermal mathematical model accounting for thermal Marangoni effect on molten JSC-1A agrees with what experimentally was observed, the formation of the meniscus on the melt-wall surface interface along with an incipient upwards migration in thin-film pattern along the crucible wall that, according to the model, experiences large temperature gradient, an important factor to trigger the thermal Marangoni effect along with the fact that surface tension of the molten lunar regolith material is temperature dependent.  相似文献

Novel measurements of the seasonal variability in mesospheric temperature at low-latitudes have been obtained from Maui, Hawaii (20.8°N, 156.2°W) during a 25-month period from October 2001 to January 2004. Independent observations of the OH (6, 2) Meinel band (peak height ∼87 km) and the O2 (0–1) atmospheric band emission (∼94 km) were made using the CEDAR Mesospheric Temperature Mapper. The data revealed a coherent oscillation in emission intensity and rotational temperature with a well-defined periodicity of 181 ± 7 days. The amplitude of this oscillation was determined to be ∼5–6 K in temperature and ∼8–9% in intensity for both the OH and O2 data sets. In addition, a strong asymmetry in the shape of the oscillation was also observed with the spring maximum significantly larger than the fall peak. These data provide new evidence in support of a semi-annual-oscillation in mesospheric temperature (and airglow emission intensities) and help quantify its seasonal characteristics.  相似文献

The migration of a droplet in a large liquid body possessing a uniform temperature gradient is analyzed in the creeping flow limit for small values of the Marangoni number (ε). The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used for the solution of the field equations. The migration velocity is calculated to 0(ε2) and the result reduces to that of Young, Goldstein and Block [10] in the limit of zero Marangoni number.  相似文献

The thermal properties of InSb, GaSb and InxGa1−xSb, such as the viscosity, wetting property, and evaporation rate, were investigated in preparation for the crystal growth experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). The viscosity of InGaSb, which is an essential property for numerical modeling of crystal growth, was evaluated. In addition, the wetting properties between molten InxGa1−xSb and quartz, BN, graphite, and C-103 materials were investigated. The evaporation rate of molten InxGa1−xSb was measured to determine the affinity of different sample configurations. From the measurements, it was found that the viscosity of InxGa1−xSb was between that of InSb and GaSb. The degree of wetting reaction between molten InxGa1−xSb and the C-103 substrate was very high, whereas that between molten InxGa1−xSb and quartz, BN, and graphite substrates was very low. The results suggest that BN and graphite can be used as materials to cover InSb and GaSb samples inside a quartz ampoule during the microgravity experiments. In addition, the difference of the evaporation rate of molten InxGa1−xSb, GaSb, and InSb was small at low, and large at high temperature.  相似文献

We summarize two years of Mesosphere Lower Thermosphere Photometer (MLTP) operation of mesospheric OH and O2 emission monitoring. The deduced mesospheric OH and O2 temperatures show large variability. Nightly temperature variations over Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E) are dominated by the short period wave features, while tidal amplitudes are relatively small. Our measurements are the first to report a long period seasonal variation at two upper mesospheric altitudes simultaneously over the Indian sector. Our observations reveal the presence of a dominant semi-annual oscillation (∼6 months periodicity) together with a shorter period (∼2.5  months periodicity) oscillation in both OH and O2 data.  相似文献

The floating-zone method for crystal growth is studied in simulated low-gravity conditions by suspending a drop of fluid vertically between two circular rods and heating the upper rod with a heater. Flow and temperature oscillations are observed under certain conditions. The temperature oscillation level and the oscillation frequency are measured against the Marangoni number for several aspect ratios using hexadecane and Fluorinert as the test fluids. It is observed that, contrary to what has been believed, the Marangoni number is not the proper parameter to describe the onset of oscillation.  相似文献

Propagation of UHE protons through CMB radiation leaves the imprint on energy spectrum in the form of Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff, bump (pile-up protons) and dip. The dip is a feature in energy range 1 × 1018–4 × 1019 eV, caused by electron–positron pair production on CMB photons. Calculated for power-law generation spectrum with index γg = 2.7, the shape of the dip is confirmed with high accuracy by data of Akeno-AGASA, HiRes, Yakutsk and Fly’s Eye detectors. The predicted shape of the dip is robust: it is valid for the rectilinear and diffusive propagation, for different discreteness in the source distribution, for local source overdensity, deficit, etc. This property of the dip allows us to use it for energy calibration of the detectors. The energy shift λ for each detector is determined by minimum χ2 in comparison of observed and calculated dip. After this energy calibration the absolute fluxes, measured by AGASA, HiRes and Yakutsk detectors remarkably coincide in energy region 1 × 1018–1 × 1020 eV. Below the characteristic energy Ec ≈ 1 × 1018 eV the spectrum of the dip flattens for both diffusive and rectilinear propagation, and more steep galactic spectrum becomes dominant at E < Ec. The energy of transition Etr < Ec approximately coincides with the position of the second knee E2kn, observed in the cosmic ray spectrum. The dip-induced transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays at the second knee is compared with traditional model of transition at ankle, the feature observed at energy 1 × 1019 eV.  相似文献

Linear stability analysis was performed to study the mechanism of transition of thermocapillary convection in liquid bridges with liquid volume ratios ranging from 0.4 to 1.2, aspect ratio of 0.75 and Prandtl number of 100. 2-D governing equations were solved to obtain the steady axi-symmetric basic flow and temperature distributions. 3-D perturbation equations were discretized at the collocation grid points using the Chebyshev-collocation method. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions were obtained by using the Q–R method. The predicted critical Marangoni numbers and critical frequencies were compared with data from space experiments. The disturbance of the temperature distribution on the free surface causes the onset of oscillatory convection. It is shown that the origin of instability is related to the hydrothermal origin for convections in large-Prandtl-number liquid bridges.  相似文献

This work reviews and expands upon the previous fluorination processes for in situ production of oxygen and silicon from lunar regolith. The process units were simulated and a flow sheet was developed to determine the product distribution and energy requirements. Our results show that 0.21 kg silicon and 0.32 kg oxygen can be produced per kg regolith processed with a total cooling duty of 17 MJ/kg regolith and electrical duty of 29 MJ/kg regolith. The payload mass required for the process is estimated as 16 kg/kg regolith processed per day.  相似文献

Planetary scale waves in the equatorial upper mesosphere were studied by measuring the airglow OI557.7 nm, O2b(0,1) and OH(6,2) emission intensities and OH rotational temperature at São João do Cariri (7.4°S; 36.5°W). From four years of data, 1998–2001, periodic oscillations of the airglow emissions were analyzed using the Lomb–Scargle spectral analysis. An oscillation of 3–4 days was frequently observed, which might be ultra-fast Kelvin waves. No seasonal dependency of the wave activity was found. On some occasions we found a quasi-5-day oscillation with a phase difference between the emissions, suggesting an upward energy flow. This is interpreted as a normal mode Rossby wave.  相似文献

Intense geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) can hamper rail traffic by disturbing signaling and train control systems. GIC threats have been a concern for technological systems at high-latitude locations due to geomagnetic disturbances driven by substorm expansion electrojet or convection electrojet intensifications. However, other geomagnetic storm processes such as storm sudden commencement (SSC) and geomagnetic pulsations can also cause GIC concerns for technological systems. We present in this paper the first evidence based on statistical data for links between geomagnetic disturbances and faulty operations (anomalies) in the functioning of railway automatics and telemetry. We analyze anomalies of automatic signaling and train control equipment which occurred in 2004 on the East-Siberian Railway (corrected geomagnetic latitude m = 46–51°N and longitude λm = 168–187°E). Our results reveal a seasonal effect in the number of anomalies per train similar to the one observed in geomagnetic activity (Kp, Ap, Dst indices). We also found an increase by a factor of 3 in the total duration of daily anomalies during intense geomagnetic storms (local geomagnetic index specific to Siberian Observatory Amax > 30), with a significant correlation between the daily sum of durations of anomalies with geomagnetic activity. Special attention was paid to failures not related to recognized technical malfunctions. We found that the probability of these failures occurring in geomagnetically disturbed periods was 5–7 times higher than the average anomaly occurrence.  相似文献

ETALON spin period determination from kHz SLR data   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Using kHz Satellite LASER Ranging (SLR) data of the SLR station Graz only, we determined the spin periods of the two ETALON satellites – launched into high orbits of about 20,000 km – and their spin period increase during 3 years. The determined spin period values and spin period increase rates at 2004-01-01 are: TET1 = 63 s + 0.484 s/year, and TET2 = 65.5 s + 0.401 s/year.  相似文献

Effects of sub-atmospheric ambient pressure and oxygen content on irradiated ignition characteristics of solid combustibles were examined experimentally in order to elucidate the flammability and chance of fire in depressurized systems and give ideas for the fire safety and fire fighting strategies for such environments. Thin cellulosic paper was used as the solid combustible since cellulose is one of major organic compounds and flammables in the nature. Applied atmospheres consisted of inert gases (either CO2 or N2) and oxygen at various mixture ratios. Total ambient pressure (P) was varied from 101 kPa (standard atmospheric pressure, P0) to 20 kPa. Ignition was initiated by external thermal radiation with CO2 laser (10 W total; 21.3 W/cm2 of the corresponding peak flux) onto the solid surface. Thermal degradation of the solid produced combustible gaseous products (e.g. CO, H2, or other low weight of HCs) and these products mixed with ambient oxygen to form the combustible mixture over the solid. Heat transfer from the irradiated surface into the mixture accelerated the exothermic reaction in the gas phase and finally thermal runaway (ignition) was achieved. A digital video camera was used to analyze the ignition characteristics. Flammability maps in partial pressure of oxygen (ppO2) and normalized ambient pressure (P/P0) plane were made to reveal the fire hazard in depressurized environments. Results showed that a wider flammable range was obtained in sub-atmospherics conditions. In middle pressure range (101–40 kPa), the required ppO2 for ignition decreased almost linearly as the total pressure decreased, indicating that higher fire risk is expected. In lower pressure range (<40 kPa), the required partial pressure of oxygen increased dramatically, then ignition was eventually not achieved at pressures less than 20 kPa under the conditions studied here. The findings suggest that it might be difficult to satisfy safety in space agriculture since it has been reported that higher oxygen concentrations are preferable for plant growth in depressurized environments. Our results imply that there is an optimum pressure level to achieve less fire chance with acceptable plant growth. An increase of the flammable range in middle pressure level might be explained by following two effects: one is a physical effect, such as a weak convective thermal removal from ignitable domain (near the hot surface) to the ambient of atmosphere, and the other is chemical effect which causes so-called “explosion peninsula” as a result of depleting radical consumption due to third-body recombination reaction. Further studies are necessary to determine the controlling factor on the observed flammable trend in depressurized conditions.  相似文献

The evolution of a dispersion under the action of temperature gradients and solidification was followed optically in a transparent molten salt (CsCl) with inclusions of Pb-droplets and gas bubbles. This system is believed to model a solidifying metallic alloy. Rejection of Pb-particles by the solidification front was observed, while large gas bubbles were incorporated. Thermocapillary convection at the gas bubbles considerably distorted the temperature field and even caused local remelting. Marangoni migration of bubbles was not observed, contrary to expectations.  相似文献

During a 6-minutes free flight of a sounding rocket an experiment on the thermal Marangoni convection in a right circular cylindric floating zone was carried out to verify the thermal Marangoni convection by flow visualisation for the first time at 10?4 g. From the motion picture analysis the velocity distributions are obtained. The interdependence between the two velocity maxima and the S-shaped temperature distribution on the free surface is discussed. The influence of the heat transfer caused by the flow of the surrounding air induced by the thermal Marangoni convection itself is considered briefly.  相似文献

Studying the relationship of total electron content (TEC) to solar or geomagnetic activities at different solar activity stages can provide a reference for ionospheric modeling and prediction. On the basis of solar activity indices, geomagnetic activity parameters, and ionospheric TEC data at different solar activity stages, this study analyzes the overall variation relationships of solar and geomagnetic activities with ionospheric TEC, the characteristics of the quasi-27-day periodic oscillations of the three variables at different stages, and the delayed TEC response of solar activity by conducting correlation analysis, Butterworth band-pass filtering, Fourier transform, and time lag analysis. The following results are obtained. (1) TEC exhibits a significant linear relationship with solar activity at different solar activity stages. The correlation coefficients |R| are arranged as follows: |R|EUV > |R|F10.7 > |R|sunspot number. No significant linear relationship exists between TEC and geomagnetic activity parameters (|R| < 0.35). (2) TEC, solar activity indices, and geomagnetic activity parameters have a period of 10.5 years. The maximum amplitudes of the Fourier spectrum for TEC and solar activity indices are nearly 27 days and those of geomagnetic activity parameters are nearly 27 and 13.5 days. (3) The deviations of the quasi-27-day significant periodic oscillation of TEC and solar activity indices are consistent. (4) No evident relationship exists between the quasi-27-day periodic oscillation of TEC and geomagnetic activity parameters. (5) The delay time of TEC for the 10.7 cm solar radio flux and extreme ultraviolet is always consistent, whereas that for sunspot number varies at each stage.  相似文献

The period January–February 2008 was characterized by four Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSWs) in the Northern Hemisphere, of which the last warming, at the end of February 2008, was a major warming. A significant decrease in mesospheric water vapour (H2O) of more than 2 ppmv (∼40%) was observed by the ground-based microwave (GBMW) radiometer in Seoul, S. Korea [37.3°N, 126.3°E] during the major SSW. A comparison with ground-based mesospheric H2O observations from the mid-latitude station in Bern [46.9°N, 7°E] revealed an anticorrelation in the mesospheric H2O data during the major SSW. In addition, prior to the major warming, strong periodic fluctuations were recorded in the Aura MLS vertical temperature distribution between 15 and 0.05 hPa at Seoul. The mesospheric temperature oscillation was found to have a period of ∼10–14 days with a persistency of 3–4 cycles.  相似文献

The PM2.5/PM10 ratio (PM2.5 and PM10 are defined as mass concentration of particles having aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 and 10 µm respectively) is one of the important parameters in understanding the severity of the fine mode surface particulate matter pollution. The present study characterises PM2.5/PM10 ratio estimates from eight Indian urban sites with varying levels of urbanization. Five years (2015–2019) of collocated PM2.5, PM10, and meteorological (ambient temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed) measurements are used to understand the spatial and temporal variability in the PM2.5/PM10 ratio at different scales and to investigate its relationship with meteorological parameters. Over the study sites, the seasonal mean PM2.5/PM10 ratio varied between 0.31 ± 0.08 (mean ± standard deviation) and 0.65 ± 0.13. Seasonally, the highest PM2.5/PM10 ratio was observed during winter and post-monsoon seasons. Sites in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) exhibited higher PM levels (PM2.5 and PM10) and higher PM2.5/PM10 ratios than the corresponding values recorded at other sites. The seasonal mean PM2.5/PM10 ratio estimated (over the study sites) using MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2) ranged between 0.25 ± 0.08 and 0.77 ± 0.16, and exhibited consistent overestimation (when compared to values derived from measurements) during winter and pre-monsoon seasons. Grossly, the PM2.5/PM10 ratio exhibited a weak association with meteorological parameters. Interestingly, despite variations in geography, population, anthropogenic activities and PM concentrations across seasons and sites, the PM2.5/PM10 ratio showed low variability.  相似文献
