Repeated observations of LMC X-4 with EXOSAT were carried out in 1983/84 in order to study its 30.5 day cycle and to cover the expected outbursts of the recurrent LMC transient A0538-66. The latter source was inactive during our campaign although a variable circumstellar envelope was still present around the optical counterpart. At least ten further X-ray sources are detected in the CMA field of view around LMC X-4 including the SNR N49 which is the possible site for the March 5, 1979 -ray burster and N63A which appears to be variable in X-ray luminosity. We furthermore discuss the strongest sources that were not present in a previous EINSTEIN survey of the LMC.  相似文献

EXOSAT observations of the X-ray pulsar 4U1145-619 during June and July 1983 and July 1984 confirm that this source shows a regular 187 day outburst cycle in X-rays. The results from pulse timing and X-ray spectroscopy are discussed in terms of a model for 4U1145-619 involving an eccentric binary system in which there is variable accretion from the Be primary star onto a companion neutron star.  相似文献

The X-ray emission from Algol is thought to originate in a corona associated with the K star in this system. We report the results of a 35 hr continuous EXOSAT observation through secondary optical eclipse that was designed to measure the structure of the corona. No obvious X-ray eclipse was seen. The spectrum measured by the ME gives a temperature of 2.5 × 107 K, consistent with the hard component previously seen by the Einstein SSS. The soft component previously reported by the SSS would only contribute at most 25% to the count rate seen in the LE (used with Al/P). The lack of a hard X-ray eclipse indicates the dimensions of the higher temperature emission region to be comparable to or greater than the size of the K star. An X-ray flare was detected with a peak luminosity of 1.4 × 1031 erg s-1 and a total duration of 8 hours. The peak temperature was 5.0 keV with an emission measure of 9.4 × 1053 cm-3. The thermal nature of the flare is confirmed by the detection of an iron line with an EW of 2 keV. By equating the observed decay time of the flare to a known cooling law gives a dimension for the flaring loop of 0.3 stellar radii. This is much smaller than the dimensions of the hard component inferred from the lack of an eclipse. It seems probable that the flare occurred in one of the loops responsible for the lower temperature component seen by the SSS.  相似文献

Sampling observations of a complete 35d cycle of Her X-1 during 1 March to 5 April 1984 with the low and medium energy X-ray detectors of EXOSAT are presented. The intensities measured in the Argon detectors are compared with the UHURU 35d light curve to obtain the turn-on times of two consecutive cycles as JD 2445753.0 ± 1.0, and JD 2445788.0 ± 0.5. The low energy data is used to determine the rotation period and its derivative as: 1.23779200 s ± 50 ns, and (-2 ± 1) × 10-13 respectively, at the epoch JD 2445778.56. Analysis of the pulse arrival phases indicate that during mid-on phase of the 35d cycle there is shift of about 180°. Evidence for the long term correlated changes of P35 and P1.24s is presented, confirming the low quality of the 35d clock and suggesting that the basic clock mechanism must lie in the disk structure itself.  相似文献

On July 5.–6. 1983, during the EXOSAT performance verification (PV) and calibration phase, a raster scan of Cygnus X-2 was performed. In contrast to the previously observed smooth intensity variations on timescales of hours, the source revealed a behaviour unknown until now: active periods with high energy flares recurring on time scales of 300–500 s were interrupted by quiet periods of several hours. At all intensity levels the source spectra clearly require a two component continuum (blackbody + thermal bremsstrahlung). In addition, a weak iron emission line with equivalent widths between 39 an 70 eV was detected. The source has a much harder spectrum during the flares than during quiet periods, indicating drastic temperature changes within the emission region, while the absolute iron line flux does not vary. From the spectral characteristics it becomes clear that self-comptonization of the thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum plays an important role. The time variability and spectral behaviour in this peculiar state allow Cyg X-2 to be classified as a Low Mass X-ray Binary System (LMXB) very similar to the prototype of this class, Sco X-1.  相似文献

A highly variable point X-ray source, first seen by the Einstein IPC, has been positioned with the EXOSAT CMA and identified with a bright (V = 8.5) K0 star. Although in the direction of the southern half of the Cygnus Loop, this star is almost certainly a foreground object and typical of other active cool stars that are related to RS CVn systems. An EXOSAT program to study T Tauri stars failed to detect T Tau itself. However, a strong X-ray source was observed 15 from T Tau, which in its turn had not been seen by Einstein. This new source has been identified with a hitherto unstudied 13 mag star which is likely to be a dMe flare star. The young star cluster NGC 2264 was observed with the EXOSAT CMA in an attempt to identify the sources found during an Einstein IPC study of S Mon. Apart from S Mon itself, only UV-bright objects were seen, but several of these are considered likely counterparts of the Einstein sources.  相似文献

EXOSAT measurements of Sco X-1 have been carried out with the 500 l/mm and 1000 l/mm grating spectrometers and simultaneously with the gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) on two occasions in August 1983. The first observing period, part of the instrument performance verification phase, on August 7 and 8, 1983, lasted for about twenty two hours and showed the source flaring during the first six hours. During the second observing period, August 29 and 30, 1983, the source was again active during part of the time. The lightcurves of the spectrometers and the GSPC show some correlation during the flaring activity. The grating spectra show clear emission features between 12 and 20 Å, which vary with time. When fitting the observed spectra to a thermal bremsstrahlungs model (exponential with gaunt factor) together with absorption by neutral matter, a reduced abundance of oxygen in the absorbing matter with respect to Solar is required.  相似文献

During the EXOSAT observation of 2S1636-536 in July 1983 the quiescent flux was observed to brighten from 1.7×10 -9 ergs/cm. 2 /sec to 2.6×10-9 ergs/cm. 2 /sec, this increase being accompanied by a decrease in effective temperature. Further analysis of the spectrum reveals that the best fit is a power law with an index which increases from -1.75 to-2.1 while the source brightens; there is some evidence for an upper cut off. This spectrum is interpreted as the result of soft photons from the neutron star surface which are Comptonised in a hot plasma cloud surrounding the neutron star (neutron star corona). The increasing spectral index is seen as the result of Compton cooling of the corona as the output of quiescent flux rises in response to an increasing accretion rate.  相似文献

We present light curves of EX Hydrae in the 1–10 keV range obtained with the medium energy experiment of EXOSAT. The 67-min modulation was observed with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 36 % in the 1–4 keV range and of 24 % in the 4–9 keV range. Newly discovered was a partial X-ray eclipse of 3 min full width which coincides with the optical eclipse and is seen at all energies. The results are interpreted in terms of an intermediate-polar (DQ Her star) model of EX Hydrae.  相似文献

Preliminary results of an EXOSAT observation of the transient X-ray source 4U1543-47 are presented. The source was observed in August 1983, during a high state, following a Tenma alert that the source was again active. Results from the GSPC and the LE 1000 l/mm grating are presented. The spectrum is complex, but in the 2–10 keV energy range can be well described by a Comptonised thermal distribution. Extrapolating the same model into the lower energy band of the grating requires an absorption column density equivalent to 2 × 1021 H cm2. A marked under-abundance of Oxygen and overabundance of Nitrogen, along with a strong, unidentified line feature at 9.8 Å, are necessary to model the grating data.  相似文献

We have observed the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 with the EXOSAT observatory and with IUE on 1983 October 31 and November 29. At the same time, optical photometry has been obtained. Variability has been observed both on a time scale of hours during the October 31 observation and on the time scale of one month. During the November 29 observation the source was 2 times brighter than in the previous observation, but no spectral modification is found between the two observations. The source has been also detected in the ME instrument and an energy spectrum has been fitted with a power law. A marginal detection in the ME Xenon counters suggests a flattening of the spectrum in the high energy band. These X-ray data extending over three decades in energy are compared with the simultaneous UV and optical observations.  相似文献

Summary On May 8, 1980, we conducted a 90 minute observation on hard X-ray emission (15-200 keV) from Her X-1, using a large area ( 1500 cm2), low background balloon borne X-ray telescope. The energy resolution of the telescope was 17% FWHM at 60 keV. Her X-1 was at binary phase 0.0725 and 2.7 ± 0.5 days after turn on in the 35 day cycle.Average pulsation light curves were obtained by sorting data into 25 equal bins, according to pulse arrival time, modulo the 1.24 sec pulsation period. The width of the main pulse is energy dependent and in the 45–75 keV region about 30% smaller than in the range from 15 to 30 keV.The data have been analyzed by taking the Her X-1 pulse minus background spectrum, where the pulse count rate is defined in a pulse phase interval around the pulse maximum of the 1.24 sec period. The background spectrum was intermittently obtained by a chopping collimator system.A spectral feature is present in emission at an energy of 49.5 (+ 1.5, -3) keV and a FWHM of 18 (+ 6, -3) keV and in absorption at an energy of 29.5 (+ 1.7, -1.5) keV and a FWHM of 17.0 (+ 2.6, -2.8) keV. The intensity of this line feature in emission is (1.8 ± 0.4) photons/cm sec. The line excess in emission over the continuum (with kT = 6.75 (+ 0.2, -0.4) keV) is 7.  相似文献

Summary Two clusters of galaxies have been observed with EXOSAT to map the distribution of cool gas. For A1367 we have detected the two brightest sources found by EINSTEIN. We confirm the identification of a X-ray source with a blue object near NGC3842. By comparing the EXOSAT and the EINSTEIN count rates we can state, either that the source is variable, or that the HI column density is low and the spectrum is either a power-law with a spectral index > 1.5 or thermal with a temperature below 6×106 K. For A1060 we confirm the classification from optical data of NGC3311 as the dominant galaxy but we find no evidence for a central source as inferred from the EINSTEIN data. We derive an accretion rate of 10Mo/yr.  相似文献

We present the results of the spectral and timing analysis of an observation of GX9+1/4U1758-205 performed with the Medium Energy Experiment aboard EXOSAT. During our observation the source flux varied irregularly in time scales from minutes to hours. No periodic emission in the period range from 16 msec to 2000 sec was found with an upper limit of around 1% (3 ) for the pulsed fraction. The hardness ratio shows a correlated change with the flux intensity (Sco X-1 behaviour). The spectrum could be fitted by a double component model, a black body component (kT=1.16–1.26 keV) together with a thermal bremsstrahlung law (kT=13–15keV). The black-body temperature-black-body flux relation follows a Stefan Boltzmann law with RBB=15.3 km*D/10 kpc. No iron line was detected. The upper limit for the line equivalent width of a 6.7 keV iron emission line is 40 eV (1). The X-ray spectral behaviour of GX9+1 indicates, that this source belongs to the class of Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXB).  相似文献

The present paper summarizes fundamental evolutionary parameters of primaries of close binaries with initial masses between 9 and 60 M and initial composition appropriate for the Galaxy, the LMC and the SMC. The primary timescales and WR binary timescales are compared with corresponding recent single star predictions.  相似文献

Cir X-1 was extremely faint when we observed it with EXOSAT. The light curve clearly shows the source in two states; a faint variable state and a very faint but more constant state. The spectrum is very complicated but clearly shows the existence of an iron line.  相似文献

X-ray source GX301-2 was observed with scintillation proportional counters in binary phase 0.90 to 0.05. Intense iron fluorescent emission and sharp iron K absorption edge appeared in all spectrum including flare, which occured on JD 2445814.6. The equivalent width are linearly correlated with column density and this can be interpreted by a simple model that cold isotropic gas surround compact source. Pulse fraction also changed inversely correlated way with column density which suggest smearing by scattering of x-rays in the reprocessing medium. Averaged iron K absorption edge energy was 7.36±0.02 keV.  相似文献

EXOSAT observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 over the period July 1983 to April 1984 have revealed a decreasing flux in the 2 –10 keV band. In accord with previous measurements a power law spectrum attenuated with a simple column of cold gas does not provide a satisfactory spectral fit below 3 keV, where a lower relative opacity is required. Inclusion of additional low energy data from the EXOSAT telescopes allows the modelling of the absorbing column to be improved and reveals a second, separate, soft X-ray spectral component.  相似文献

The Gas Scintillation and Medium Energy instruments onboard EXOSAT measured the continuum and line emission spectrum in the Tycho supernova remnant. For the first time the iron line at 6.53 keV is clearly resolved from the continuum, in addition to the lines from S, Ar and Ca. The comparison with a non-equilibrium ionisation model (Hamilton et al 1983) confirms the over-abundance of S and Ca, whereas the Fe abundance is found to be solar, which provides additional support that the predicted 0.1–1 M0 Fe in type I supernovae is presently not shocked to X-ray emitting temperatures.  相似文献
