In the present work we intend to show that a stellar dynamo mechanism can produce high X-ray luminosities and also give account for modulation periods of the order thousand seconds or larger. We outline here that the model we propose does not require the presence of a very compact object in a binary system; indeed, we intend to show that faint late main sequence stars sufficiently fast rotating, can give rise by dynamo action to sufficiently high magnetic fields to give account for the strong X-ray emission of some galactic X-ray sources. We examine the possibility that also a fraction of those X-ray sources usually depicted as accreting binary systems may be interpreted as active stars supplied by the - dynamo mechanism.  相似文献

Baryons observed in Ly absorbers contribute to the density parameter 0 by bar 0.06 in close agreement with the value of 0.06 from primordial nucleosynthesis (H0=55 km s-1 Mpc-1, = 0 assumed throughout). A number of methods are known to measure 0 from density fluctuations; bound structures tend to yield lower values (m 0.2-0.4), field galaxies over large scales higher, but still undercritical values (m 0.6 ± 0.2). The best compromise value is 0 0.5, but the present methods are blind to diffusely distributed, exotic matter which still could make 0 = 1. A satisfactory solution of 0 (and ) will only come from a fundamental cosmological test (e.g. the Hubble diagram of [evolution-corrected] supernovae type Ia) in combination with the CMB fluctuation spectrum.  相似文献

A summary of various measurements of the mean matter density in the universe, m, is presented. Results from very different kinds of methods using various astronomical objects – from supernovae to large-scale structure – are shown. There is a remarkable preference for m values around 0.3, but there are also some measurements that favour a higher or a smaller value.  相似文献

Summary Soft X-ray (0.3–3.5 keV) observations with the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) onboard Einstein Observatory are presented for a sample of some 20 cool stars of luminosity classes III–V. The results are compared with the Ca II H and K emission, which had served as a selection criterion. The specific X-ray flux FX is an increasing function of the specific Ca II H and K line-core flux FH+K. This correlation can be considerably improved by replacing FH+K by the excess flux (FH+K) above a certain lower limit which varies with B-V. This relation holds with little scatter over the two decades in FX in our sample. The FX-FH+K relation shows no significant dependence on spectral type or luminosity class, it suits close binaries as well as single stars. However, the coronal X-ray temperature Tc strongly depends on the luminosity class: Tc 3 106 K for dwarfs and 107 K for giants. The results are interpreted in the framework of magnetic activity. The X-ray emission and the excess Ca II H and K flux are attributed to magnetic structure in the corona and chromosphere, the magnetic features emerging from the stellar convective envelope, where they are generated by dynamo action.  相似文献

Recent analytical and computational advances in the theory of large-scale dynamos are reviewed. The importance of the magnetic helicity constraint is apparent even without invoking mean-field theory. The tau approximation yields expressions that show how the magnetic helicity gets incorporated into mean-field theory. The test-field method allows an accurate numerical determination of turbulent transport coefficients in linear and nonlinear regimes. Finally, some critical views on the solar dynamo are being offered and targets for future research are highlighted.  相似文献

In the present phase of the solar cycle no big transients leading to strong modulation had been observed after 1991. Apart from a few minor disturbances cosmic rays were still recovering to a new intensity maximum. It was suggested, therefore, that existing literature from previous cycles should be critically reviewed. The scene was set by the introductory papers on— phenomenology of cosmic ray modulation in successive solar cycles throughout the heliosphere— the present state of models for long term modulation and their shortcomings— the relation between cosmic ray variations and the magnitude of the interplanetary magnetic field (the CR-B-relation)— charge dependent effects. In the discussions, the study of propagating diffusive disturbances and the CR-B-relation played a central role. The difference was stressed between isolated transient disturbances in the inner solar system (Forbush decreases), and the long lasting, step-like decreases caused by merged interaction regions in the outer heliosphere. The recovery rates following the step-like decreases vary with the phase in the 22-year solar cycle. In some cases this requires a modification of existing drift models. In the outer heliosphere, the CR-B-relation leads to the result 1/ between the diffusion coefficient and the field magnitude . This simple result is a challenge for theoreticians to derive the perpendicular diffusion coefficient fromfirst principles. The three articles in this report essentially follow the list of open points and arguments just presented. The article "Observations and Simple Models" is organised around the model of a propagating diffusive barrier, its application to Forbush effects in the inner heliosphere and to decreases caused by merged interaction regions in the outer heliosphere. Acomparison of observed Forbush decreases with model predictions requires a careful separation of the two steps related to the turbulent region behind the shock front and the closed magnetic field regions of the ejecta (the interplanetary counterparts of coronal mass ejections). It is shown that models for propagating disturbances can be used to derive values of the diffusion coefficients phenomenologically, not only during the disturbance, but also in the ambient medium. The "Modeling of Merged Interaction Regions" summarizes the dynamic and time-dependent process of cosmic ray modulation in the heliosphere. Numerical models with only a time-dependent neutral sheet prove to be successful when moderate to low solar activity occurs but fail to describe large and discrete steps in modulated cosmic rays when solar activity is high. To explain this feature of heliospheric modulation, the concept of global merged interaction regions is required. The com-bination of gradient, curvature and neutral sheet drifts with these global merged interaction regions has so far been the most successful approach in explaining the 11-year and 22-year cycles in the long-term modulation of cosmic rays. The "Remarks on the Diffusion Tensor in the Heliosphere" describe available theories of perpen-dicular diffusion and drift, and discuss their relevance to cosmic rays in the heliosphere. In addition, the information about diffusion coefficients and spatial gradients obtained from the analysis of steady state anisotropies at neutron monitor energies is summarized. These topics are intimately related to the other two articles. They are also part of the general discussion about the "Diffusion Tensor throughout the Heliosphere" which played an important role in all working groups.  相似文献

Measurements of solar total irradiance and its variability   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The development of electrically self calibrated cavity pyrheliometric instrumentation that occurred in the early 20th century provided the technological base for experiments to detect variability of the solar total irradiance. Experiments from ground based observatories, aircraft and balloons during the 1st half of the 20th century were unable to achieve sufficient accuracy or long term precision to unambiguously detect irradiance variations of solar origin. Refinements in pyrheliometric technology during the 1960's and 1970's and the accessibility of extended experimental opportunities above the Earth's atmosphere in recent years have provided the first direct observations of solar total irradiance variability and provided the cornerstone observations of a long term database on solar irradiance. A program of solar irradiance monitoring has evolved to sustain the database over at least 22 years, corresponding to a single cycle of solar magnetic activity, and the shortest well identified cycle of climate variation. Direct links between total irradiance variations, solar magnetic activity and the solar global 5 min oscillation phenomena have been derived from recent space flight observations by the SMM/ACRIM I experiment.  相似文献

Sunspots, seen as cool regions on the surface of the Sun, are a thermal phenomenon. Sunspots are always associated with bipolar magnetic loops that break through the solar surface. Thus to explain the origin of sunspots we have to understand how the magnetic field originates inside the Sun and emerges at its surface. The field predicted by mean-field dynamo theories is too weak by itself to emerge at the surface of the Sun. However, because of the turbulent character of solar convection the fields generated by dynamo are intermittent – i.e., concentrated into ropes or sheets with large spaces in between. The intermittent fields are sufficiently strong to be able to emerge at the solar surface, in spite of the fact that their mean (average) value is weak. It is suggested here that magnetic fields emerge at the solar surface at those random times and places when the total magnetic field (mean field plus fluctuations) exceeds the threshold for buoyancy. The clustering of coherently emerged loops results in the formation of a sunspot. A non-axisymmetric enhancement of the underlying magnetic field causes in the clustering of sunspots forming sunspot groups, clusters of activity and active longitudes. The mean field, which is not directly observable, is also important, being responsible for the ensemble regularities of sunspots, such as Hale's law of sunspot polarities and the 11-year periodicity.  相似文献

Morphology and physics of short-period magnetic pulsations   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This review is devoted to the main problems of experimental and theoretical investigations of geoelectromagnetic waves in the frequency range from 0.1 to 5 Hz. These waves constitute the short-period subclass of so-called geomagnetic pulsations. The short-period pulsations are represented by Pc1, Pc2, Pi1, Ipdp types and some subclassifications. The understanding of the pulsation mechanisms provides an insight into the structure and dynamics of the Earth's magnetosphere. We focus our attention on Pc1 pearl pulsations and on the classical (evening) Ipdp, for which basic physical concepts have been established. Other types and varieties are outlined also, but in less detail. In these cases, the physical mechanism is not always clear (as, for example, in the case of morning Ipdp), and/or the morphology is still to be determined carefully (Pc2 and discrete signals in polar cusps as typical examples).Short-period pulsations are a spontaneous, sporadic phenomenon which undergo a certain evolution in the course of a magnetic storm. We consider the storm-time variation as a natural background, and we use this background to collect the information about the pulsations in an orderly manner. At the same time, together with the transient storm-time variation of pulsation activity, quasi-periodic variations take place, which are connected with the Earth's and Sun's rotation, Earth's orbital motion and solar cycle activity. The study of these regular variations allows us to have a new approach to the mechanisms of excitation and propagation of short-period geomagnetic pulsations.  相似文献

The Solar Dynamo
Observations relevant to current models of the solar dynamo are presented, with emphasis on the history of solar magnetic activity and on the location and nature of the solar tachocline. The problems encountered when direct numerical simulation is used to analyse the solar cycle are discussed, and recent progress is reviewed. Mean field dynamo theory is still the basis of most theories of the solar dynamo, so a discussion of its fundamental principles and its underlying assumptions is given. The role of magnetic helicity is discussed. Some of the most popular models based on mean field theory are reviewed briefly. Dynamo models based on severe truncations of the full MHD equations are discussed.  相似文献

It has been thought for a long time that the luminosity of the Sun has remained constant since the Sun evolved into the Main Sequence stage almost 4.5 billion yr ago. However, many of recent data obtained from the isotopic analyses in the tree rings, meteoritic and lunar samples have shown that the luminosity and the activity of the Sun must have been varied for such long years. It seems that the one of the most important discoveries on the variability of the Sun is that of the Maunder Minimum (1645–1715), during which the solar activity had been extremely weak so that no sunspot had been observed for almost seventy years. Furthermore, this minimum was almost coincident with the severest period of the Little Ice Age having covered the Earth from the early 14th to the middle 19th centuries. These results suggest a possible connection between the long-term variation of the Earth's climate and that of the solar activity. The Sun shines as emitting continuously the nuclear energy as light quanta. As well known, this energy is almost constantly being released from the thermonuclear reactions taking place in the central core of the Sun. Whenever the efficiency of these reactions changes due to some mechanisms to occur inside the Sun, the light emissivity from the Sun, namely, the Sun's luminosity, would change accordingly. Thus some change in the physical processes inside the Sun may always induce various kinds of variability as related to the rearrangement of the internal structure of the Sun. As a result of this kind of change, the Earth's climatic condition also seems to be critically influenced in association with the variation of the Sun's luminosity. Since it seems that the mean level of the solar activity for a long time, say, 100 yr, is dependent on the long-term change in the physical processes inside the Sun as related to the variation of the solar luminosity, the Earth's climatic condition may be necessarily changeable as dependent on the long-term variation of the solar activity. Some evidence is here shown by reviewing the historical records on the climatic change.A brief account is finally given on the possible origin of the inconstancy in the solar luminosity and activity.  相似文献

The Solar Dynamo   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It is generally accepted that the strong toroidal magnetic fields that emerge through the solar surface in sunspots and active regions are formed by the action of differential rotation on a poloidal field, and then stored in or near the tachocline at the base of the Sun’s convection zone. The problem is how to explain the generation of a reversed poloidal field from this toroidal flux—a process that can be parametrised in terms of an α-effect related to some form of turbulent helicity. Here we first outline the principal patterns that have to be explained: the 11-year activity cycle, the 22-year magnetic cycle and the longer term modulation of cyclic activity, associated with grand maxima and minima. Then we summarise what has been learnt from helioseismology about the Sun’s internal structure and rotation that may be relevant to our subject. The ingredients of mean-field dynamo models are differential rotation, meridional circulation, turbulent diffusion, flux pumping and the α-effect: in various combinations they can reproduce the principal features that are observed. To proceed further, it is necessary to rely on large-scale computation and we summarise the current state of play.  相似文献

Stellar flares
Radio and X-ray observations of stellar flares provide the most direct probes of energy relaase particle acceleration, and energy transport on stars other than the Sun. In this review, the observational basis for our understanding of the flare phenomenon on other stars is briefly described and outstanding interpretive and theoretical issues are discussed. I shall confine my attention to objects which are solar-like, to the extent that they possess deep convective envelopes and display activity which is presumed to be magnetic in origin. These include pre-main sequence objects, classical flare stars, and close binaries. Future directions are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The Sun's interplanetary magnetic field and the solar wind modulate the distribution of galactic cosmic-ray particles in the heliosphere. The particles diffuse inward, convert outward and have drifts in the motion of their gyro-centres. Irregularities in the IMF also scatter particles from their gyro-orbits. These processes are the components of solar modulation and produce streaming (and higher-order anisotropies) of particles in the heliosphere. The anisotropies can be investigated at the Earth by examining the count rates of cosmic-ray detectors. The anisotropic streams appear as diurnal variations in solar and sidereal time in the count rates. Higher-order anisotropies produce generally much smaller semi-diurnal and higher-order variations. Theoretical models of solar modulation predict effects that depend on the polarity of the Sun's magnetic dipole. The solar diurnal and north-south anisotropies can be used to test these predictions. This paper is a short review of analyses of 60 years of cosmic-ray data collected at the Earth for the solar and sidereal diurnal variations present. Past analyses have yielded interesting and controversial results regarding the rigidity spectra and components of these anisotropies. Some of the controversy remains today. Analyses of these anisotropies have also yielded quantitative information about parameters important to solar modulation, such as latitudinal and radial density gradients. The relatively new techniques used for these determinations are explained here. Calculations of these modulation parameters from Earth-based cosmic-ray detectors are reviewed and compared to spaceprobe measurements and theoretical predictions of their values. Recently, investigations of the sidereal and solar diurnal anisotropies have been combined to calculate mean-free-paths of cosmic rays in the heliosphere. The latest conclusions from these analyses are that the parallel mean-free-paths of cosmic rays may depend on the polarity of the Sun's magnetic field. The results of these investigations are included in this paper to indicate the present state of knowledge concerning this facet of cosmic-ray research. Now at Department of Physics, Shinshu University, 3-1-1 Asahi, Matsumoto 390, Japan.  相似文献

Since the baryon-to-photon ratio 10 is in some doubt at present, we ignore the constraints on 10 from big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and fit the three key cosmological parameters (h, M, 10) to four other observational constraints: Hubble parameter (ho), age of the universe (to), cluster gas (baryon) fraction (fo fGh3/2), and effective shape parameter (o). We consider open and flat CDM models and flat CDM models, testing goodness of fit and drawing confidence regions by the 2 method. CDM models with M = 1 (SCDM models) are accepted only because we allow a large error on ho, permitting h < 0.5. Open CDM models are accepted only for M 0.4. CDM models give similar results. In all of these models, large 10 ( 6) is favored strongly over small 10 ( 2), supporting reports of low deuterium abundances on some QSO lines of sight, and suggesting that observational determinations of primordial 4He may be contaminated by systematic errors. Only if we drop the crucial o constraint are much lower values of M and 10 permitted.  相似文献

Energy coupling between the solar wind and the magnetosphere   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
This paper describes in detail how we are led to the first approximation expression for the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling function , which correlates well with the total energy consumption rate U T of the magnetosphere. It is shown that is the primary factor which controls the time development of magnetospheric substorms and storms. The finding of this particular expression indicates how the solar wind couples its energy to the magnetosphere; the solar wind and the magnetosphere constitute a dynamo. In fact, the power P generated by the dynamo can be identified as by using a dimensional analysis. Furthermore, the finding of indicates that the magnetosphere is closer to a directly driven system than to an unloading system which stores the generated energy before converting it to substorm and storm energies. Therefore, the finding of and its implications have considerably advanced and improved our understanding of magnetospheric processes. The finding of has also led us to a few specific future problems in understanding relationships between solar activity and magnetospheric disturbances, such as a study of distortion of the solar current disk and the accompanying changes of . It is also pointed out that one of the first tasks in the energy coupling study is an improvement of the total energy consumption rate U T of the magnetosphere. Specific steps to be taken in this study are suggested.  相似文献

The baryon density of the universe B is well measured indirectly from Big-Bang nucleo-synthesis, in particular by recent measurements of the D/H ratio in high-redshift QSO absorption systems. In addition, very recent measurements of the second maximum of the power-spectrum of the CMB fine scale anisotropy allow to constrain B at z1000. Both results agree and yield B=0.02h –2. Direct measurements of the diffuse baryonic component (intergalactic gas) at redshifts z=3 and 1.5 and in the local universe are reviewed and shown to be much more difficult. Available observations are consistent with the hypothesis that at z=3 and possibly still at z=1.5 nearly all baryons are located in the highly ionized L forest component, while at later epochs the contribution of a low-density, shock-heated component (105–107 K), the so called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), occupies with decreasing redshift an increasing fraction of all baryons. Methods to detect this component and the difficulty to make quantitative estimates are described. In the local universe of all baryons may be hidden in the WHIM. Yet at z=1.5, this component contains at least a factor of 5 less material.  相似文献

Theoretical logN-logS distributions and (V/V max) tests of gamma-ray bursts in the model of coalescence of neutron star (NS+NS) and/or NS+black hole (NS+BH) binaries are calculated for a flat Universe (=1) with different values of the cosmological constant and under various assumptions about the star formation history. The observed logN-logS distribution and value of (V/V max)=0.33 for 411 bursts with knownC max/C lim from the 2d BATSE catalogue are best fitted with a model for which = 0.2 and primary star formation occurs at redshiftsz5–6.  相似文献

Predicting the behavior of a solar cycle after it is well underway (2–3 years after minimum) can be done with a fair degree of skill using auto-regression and curve fitting techniques that don’t require any knowledge of the physics involved. Predicting the amplitude of a solar cycle near, or before, the time of solar cycle minimum can be done using precursors such as geomagnetic activity and polar fields that do have some connection to the physics but the connections are uncertain and the precursors provide less reliable forecasts. Predictions for the amplitude of cycle 24 using these precursor techniques give drastically different values. Recently, dynamo models have been used directly with assimilated data to predict the amplitude of sunspot cycle 24 but have also given significantly different predictions. While others have questioned both the predictability of the solar cycle and the ability of current dynamo models to provide predictions, it is clear that cycle 24 will help to discriminate between some opposing dynamo models.  相似文献

More than 1000 coronal mass ejections (CMEs) caused by different types of coronal transients have been analyzed up to now, based on the images from white light coronagraphs on board the OSO 7, Skylab, P78-1, and SMM spacecraft. In many cases, the CME images lead us to the impression of loop-like, more planar structures, similar to those of prominence structures often seen in H pictures. There is increasing evidence, though, for a three-dimensional bubble- or cloud-like structure of CMEs. In several cases, CMEs directed toward the earth (or away from it) were identified, as their outer fronts emerged on all sides of the coronagraph's occulting disk, thus suggesting a bubble-like appearance. There now appears to be unanimity about the crucial role that magnetic reconnection plays during the transient process. Recently, direct evidence was found for the pinch-off of CMEs, both from optical observations and from in situ measurements of isolated magnetic clouds' following transient shock waves. However, the detailed sequence of events during the generation of a CME is still unclear.Interplanetary shock waves associated with the CMEs are usually restricted in latitudinal extent to about the angular width of the optically observed CMEs. They may be somewhat less restricted in longitudinal extent. A nearly 1 1 association between CMEs and shock waves measured in situ from spacecraft (Helios 1 and 2, IMP 7 and 8, ISEE 3, Pioneer Venus) can be established, provided the CME and the spacecraft were in the same longitudinal and latitudinal range and the CME speed exceeds 400 km s–1. Around the past solar activity minimum all CMEs observed were centered at solar latitudes of less than 60°. Around solar maximum, a significant fraction of CMEs also originated from the polar regions. Thus, there is a good chance that the Ulysses spaceprobe will encounter many shocks caused by both low- and high-latitude CMEs, when it finally starts its journey over the Sun's poles.  相似文献
