Evidence on the issues of whether the W Serpentis stars are a coherent class, and how they may interface with the Algol systems, is reviewed, with emphasis on the idea that they are semi-detached systems in the latter part of the rapid phase of mass transfer, with optically and geometrically thick disks of transferred gas around the (now) more massive star. We are interested in what will be seen when the gas clears away, and mainly examine the idea that it will be an Algol-type system. More particularly, consideration is given to centrifugally limited accretion as a mechanism to build up a substantial disk, and the presumed evolutionary sequence is from a W Ser to a rapidly rotating Algol to a normal Algol system. Systems such as V367 Cyg and RW Tau fit into this scheme only with difficulty. Because it is extremely difficult to measure the rotation of some W Ser (mass) primaries, it is natural to look at the rotation statistics of Algols to test this idea. The badly behaved light curves and spectroscopy of some Algols (eg. U Cep, RZ Sct) may be attributable to the double contact condition, and the ramifications of this possibility are discussed. If so, the rotation statistics of Algols should show two spikes, corresponding to the two special conditions into which a system should be driven by tidal braking and centrifugally limited spinup. Present rotation statistics do show these spikes. Algols should flip between these states fairly quickly, depending on the mass transfer rate. Thus, to the extent that the meager statistics can be accepted as meaningful, the new (fourth) morphological type of close binary (double contact) has attained demonstrable reality. The rotation statistics are presented in terms of a particular rotation parameter, R, which is zero for synchronism and unity for the centrifugal limit. Future work should develop rotation statistics to see if the rotational lobe-filling (R = 1) spike persists. It should also look into whether W Ser primaries are on the hydrogen burning main sequence, or in general what they are. We also need more light curves of W Ser type systems, high resolution line profiles for the (mass) primaries (with particular attention to the W Ser-Algol transition cases), and spectroscopy of low inclination W Serpentis systems, such as KX And.  相似文献

Initial results are presented from a study of H γ profiles in the two interacting binaries KX And and RX Cas of W Serpentis type. The used CCD spectra with a resolution of 0.13Å/px were obtained with the 2.2m telescope and the Coudé spectrograph at the German-Spanish Astronomical Center at Calar Alto/Spain. KX And. This star is probably a non-eclipsing member of the W Serpentis type interactive binaries and has a period of P = 38.908 days. Our seven spectra of KX And were obtained at phase 0.54 – 0.75. The P Cyg profiles of the H γ line during our observations indicate an expanding shell. The asymetry becomes blue-sided at phase 0.67 and increases thereafter. This points toward a strong outflow of matter in the vicinity of the L3 point. RX Cas. According to the model of Andersen et al. (1988) the primary is a mid-B type star with M = 5.8M and R = 2.5R . The star is completely obscured by a geometrically and optically thick disk, which is supplied by mass transfer from the other component. The secondary is a K1 giant with M = 1.8M and R = 23.5R and fills out his critical Roche lobe. Radiative and geometrical properties of the disk are variable and its structure is probably not homogenous. Five spectra of RX Cas were obtained during the primary eclipse (phase 0.95 – 0.19). The observed double-peak emission is seen only after the eclipse with a separation of ≈ 250 km/s peak-to-peak, while during the eclipse an asymetric line profile can be observed with a red-shifted emission always presented. Also, a central emission at φ = 0.94 should be noticed, probably originating in the vicinity of L1. The observations of both systems indicate that we are dealing with strongly interacting binaries. Further observations are planned for better covering of phase.  相似文献

We present the results of our observations of stars of type O5 and earlier and show that inclusion of the line blocking between 228 and 912 A solves the problem found by Herrero et al. (1992) in the determination of their stellar parameters. We study the influence of the line blocking and other effects on the mass and helium discrepancies and show that the first one is reduced by the use of spherical, non hydrostatic model atmospheres and that the second one is probably due to exposure of CNO material. The INT is operated on the island of La Palma by the RGO in the Spanish Observatorio de El Roque de los Muchachos of the Instituto de Astrofsica de Canarias  相似文献

The properties of the eclipsing binaries Algol, Beta Lyrae, and W Serpentis are discussed and new results are presented. The physical properties of the components of Algol are now well determined. High resolution spectroscopy of the H-alpha feature by Richards et al. and by Gillet et al. and spectroscopy of the ultraviolet resonance lines with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite reveal hot gas around the BBV primary. Gas flows also have been detected apparently originating from the low mass, cooler secondary component and flowing toward the hotter star through the Lagrangian L1 point. Analysis of 6 years of multi-bandpass photoelectric photometry of Beta Lyrae indicates that systematic changes in light curves occur with a characteristic period of -275 ± 25 days. These changes may arise from pulsations of the B8II star or from changes in the geometry of the disk component. Hitherto unpublished u, v, b, y, and H-alpha index light curves of W Ser are presented and discussed. W Ser is a very complex binary system that undergoes complicated, large changes in its light curves. The physical properties of W Ser are only poorly known, but it probably contains one component at its Roche surface, rapidly transfering matter to a component which is embedded in a thick, opaque disk. In several respects, W Ser resembles an upscale version of a cataclysmic variable binary system.  相似文献

We discuss mass loss relations for OB-type stars as a function of luminosity, effective temperature, and mass. We conclude that a simple first order linear regression relation is as good as any other more sophisticated relation, with the advantage that the simple form consumes much less computer time when used in evolutionary codes.  相似文献

The evolution of massive stars   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The evolution of stars with masses between 15 M 0 and 100M 0 is considered. Stars in this mass range lose a considerable fraction of their matter during their evolution. The treatment of convection, semi-convection and the influence of mass loss by stellar winds at different evolutionary phases are analysed as well as the adopted opacities.Evolutionary sequences computed by various groups are examined and compared with observations, and the advanced evolution of a 15M 0 and a 25M 0 star from zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) through iron collapse is discussed. The effect of centrifugal forces on stellar wind mass loss and the influence of rotation on evolutionary models is examined. As a consequence of the outflow of matter deeper layers show up and when the mass loss rates are large enough layers with changed composition, due to interior nuclear reactions, appear on the surface. The evolution of massive close binaries as well during the phase of mass loss by stellar wind as during the mass exchange and mass loss phase due to Roche lobe overflow is treated in detail, and the value of the parameters governing mass and angular momentum losses are discussed. The problem of the Wolf-Rayet stars, their origin and the possibilities of their production either as single stars or as massive binaries is examined. Finally, the origin of X-ray binaries is discussed and the scenario for the formation of these objects (starting from massive ZAMS close binaries, through Wolf-Rayet binaries leading to OB-stars with a compact companion after a supernova explosion) is reviewed and completed, including stellar wind mass loss.  相似文献

Assuming that frequencies observed in multiperiod Cephei variables correspond to normal pulsation modes leads to the following conclusions: (1) a variety of low Z oscillations are excited in these stars, (2) at most one radial mode is seen in any of them.Pulsation constants can be derived for two Cephei stars without recourse to photometric calibrations. In both cases a 0.5 mag. downward revision of the Balmer line absolute magnitudes is indicated. Implications of this result for Stel1ingwerf's opacity bump mechanism are briefly considered. The text of the paper will appear in Proceedings of the Fifth European Regional Meeting of the IAU.  相似文献

We present relative carbon and oxygen abundances derived via an optically thin recombination line analysis for five WO stars, and compare the derived abundances to recent evolutionary models. New recombination coefficients for O4+, O5+ and O6+ ions have allowed total oxygen abundances to be derived. The final C/He values range between 0.4 and 0.8 by number, consistent with C/He ratios previously derived for WC stars. O/He values range between 0.1–0.4, with C/O ratios between 2.1–4.8.A comparison of the derived abundances with the evolutionary models of Maeder (1990) and Schaller et al. (1992) shows promising agreement. We find reasonably tight agreement between the abundances derived for the WO stars. The degree of enhancement for the oxygen abundances in regions of low metallicity predicted by Maeder (1990) is not corroborated by our results.Additionally we present a revised, quantified classification scheme for WO subtypes. We extend the class to lower excitation, WO5, and place MS 4 (=WR 30a) in this class. Equivalent widths of the strongest lines of MS 4 are also presented. Finally, we present new observations of DR 1, a WO3 star located in the dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613.  相似文献

We discuss the common envelope phase in the evolution of binary systems. The problem of the efficiency of energy deposition into envelope ejection is treated in some detail. We describe the implications of common envelope evolution for the shaping of planetary nebulae with close binary nuclei and for double white dwarf systems, considered to be the progenitors of Type I supernovae.  相似文献

Measurements of the shape of the ultraviolet spectrum from B stars are compared with the theoretical spectra predicted from a homogeneous series of eight model atmospheres which are known to be close to a state of radiative equilibrium and to give a good representation of the ordinarily observed spectral region. The broad-band photometer measurements of Byram, Chubb, and Friedman in the region 1314 indicate that the stars become brighter in the ultraviolet as their temperature increases. The theoretical spectra reproduce this trend. However, the theoretical spectra are about three times as bright at 1314 relative to their brightness at 5560 as is observed. The spectral observations at 50Å resolution of Stecher and Milligan of six absorption-line stars are compared in detail with theoretical spectra. The observed shape of the spectrum is reproduced well by the models from 2600 to longer wavelengths. At wavelengths shorter than 2600 Å, the observed fluxes from B stars are less than the predicted fluxes. At 2000 the deficiency is between a factor two and a factor four. The spectrum of Canis Majoris is observed to have a different shape from that found for four other early-type stars. In the case of Canis Majoris the deficiency at 2000 is about a factor 13.The proper manner in which to compare theory and observation is discussed and some astrophysical terminology is explained. Theoretical fluxes, , are given in Table 1 for eight early B type model atmospheres at wavelengths between the Lyman limit and 6251. These fluxes have been computed without consideration of the opacity due to line blanketing. It is shown that line blanketing can probably account for the differences noted between predicted and observed ultra-violet spectra of B stars. It is not necessary at present to invoke unusual sources of opacity in the stellar atmosphere or in the space between the star and the earth in order to explain the observations. Spectra of B stars in the 2000 region at sufficient resolution to show the line spectrum would clarify the problem.  相似文献

A substantial fraction (typically 10%) of Galactic B stars consists of Be stars. While Galactic Be stars have been fairly well investigated, very little is known about the Be star content of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). We present a refined method of Be star identification by CCD photometry and apply it to four young clusters and associations in the MCs. We find NGC 330 in the SMC to be exceptionally rich in Be stars, while the fraction is clearly lower in the similarly aged LMC clusters NGC 2004 and NGC 1818. NGC 2044, a very young region in the LMC, contains almost no Be stars. Among very early-type B stars in the investigated MC clusters we find the largest number of Be stars, while in the Milky Way this is shifted to somewhat later types. In the LMC, there may be a second frequency peak around B6.Based on observations obtained at the 2.2m MPIA telescope at ESO, La Silla, Chile, partly on time granted by the MPIA, Heidelberg.  相似文献

Observational and theoretical evidence indicates that chromospheres are very likely heated by acoustic and by slow mode magnetohydrodynamic waves. Cooling of neutron stars is calculated using an exact stellar evolution code. The full general relativistic version of the stellar structure equations are solved, with the best physical input currently available. For neutron stars with a stiff equation of state, we find that the deviation from the isothermality in the interior is significant and that it takes at least a few thousand years to reach the isothermal state. By comparing the most recent theoretical and observational results, we conclude that for Cas A, SN1006, and probably Tycho, standard cooling is inconsistent with the results from the Einstein Observatory, if neutron stars are assumed to be present in these objects. On the other hand, the detection points for RCW103 and the Crab are consistent with these theoretical results. On leave from Department of Physics, Ibaraki University, Japan  相似文献
