A simple model has been developed that demonstrates that heliospheric X-ray emission can account for about 25%–50% of observed soft X-ray background intensities. Similar to cometary soft X-ray emission, these X-rays are thought to be produced in the heliosphere due to charge transfer collisions between heavy solar wind ions and interstellar neutrals. A more complex model has now been developed to take into account temporal and spatial variations of the solar wind and interstellar neutrals. Measured time histories of the solar wind proton flux are used in the model and the results are compared with the ‘long-term enhancements’ in the soft X-ray background measured by ROSAT for the same time period. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The observational information on X-ray binaries that was collected with the 80 cm2 auxiliary X-ray detector onboard the COS-B gamma-ray satellite is reviewed. The results illustrate that in the study of X-ray binaries observations of long duration are extremely effective, even when using a small instrument.  相似文献

The present knowledge of the structure of low-mass X-ray binary systems is reviewed. We examine the orbital period distribution of these sources and discuss how the orbital periods are measured. There is substantial observational evidence that the accretion disks in low-mass X-ray binaries are thick and structured. In a number of highly inclined systems, the compact X-ray emitting star is hidden from direct view by the disk and X-radiation is observed from these only because photons are scattered into the line of sight by material above and below the disk plane. In such systems the X-ray emission can appear extended with respect to the companion star, which can lead to partial X-ray eclipses. There are substantial variations in the thickness of the disk rim with azimuth. These give rise to the phenomenon of irregular dips in the X-ray flux which recur with the orbital period, or to an overall binary modulation of the X-ray flux if the source is extended. The X-ray spectra of low-mass X-ray binaries can be used to probe the innermost emission regions surrounding the compact star. The spectra of the bright Sco X-1 variables can be fitted with two components which are provisionally identified as originating in the inner disk and the boundary layer between the disk and the neutron star respectively. The characteristic energy dependent flaring of the Sco X-1 sub-class may be a geometric effect triggered by an increase in the thickness of the inner disk or boundary layer. The X-ray spectra of the lower luminosity systems, including the bursters, are less complex, and in many cases can be represented by a single power law with, in some sources, a high energy cut-off. Iron line emission is a characteristic of most low-mass X-ray binaries, irrespective of luminosity.  相似文献

Accretion onto black holes powers most luminous compact sources in the Universe. Black holes are found with masses extending over an extraordinary broad dynamic range, from several to a few billion times the mass of the Sun. Depending on their position on the mass scale, they may manifest themselves as X-ray binaries or active galactic nuclei. X-ray binaries harbor stellar mass black holes—endpoints of the evolution of massive stars. They have been studied by X-ray astronomy since its inception in the early 60-ies, however, the enigma of the most luminous of them—ultra-luminous X-ray sources, still remains unsolved. Supermassive black holes, lurking at the centers of galaxies, are up to hundreds of millions times more massive and give rise to the wide variety of different phenomena collectively termed “Active Galactic Nuclei”. The most luminous of them reach the Eddington luminosity limit for a few billions solar masses object and are found at redshifts as high as z≥5–7. Accretion onto supermassive black holes in AGN and stellar- and (possibly) intermediate mass black holes in X-ray binaries and ultra-luminous X-ray sources in star-forming galaxies can explain most, if not all, of the observed brightness of the cosmic X-ray background radiation. Despite the vast difference in the mass scale, accretion in X-ray binaries and AGN is governed by the same physical laws, so a degree of quantitative analogy among them is expected. Indeed, all luminous black holes are successfully described by the standard Shakura-Sunyaev theory of accretion disks, while the output of low-luminosity accreting black holes in the form of mechanical and radiative power of the associated jets obeys to a unified scaling relation, termed as the “fundamental plane of black holes”. From that standpoint, in this review we discuss formation of radiation in X-ray binaries and AGN, emphasizing their main similarities and differences, and examine our current knowledge of the demographics of stellar mass and supermassive black holes.  相似文献

We give a progress report of our EXOSAT observations of active M dwarfs. The possibilities of filter spectroscopy of coronal X-ray sources using the available CMA filters are discussed, and we confirm that M dwarfs are rather hot coronal sources with X-ray temperatures in excess of 107 K, a result previously obtained with the Einstein Observatory.  相似文献

Hot white dwarfs are objects that copiously emit in the Extreme Ultraviolet and soft X-ray range. They are the brightest sources seen in the Low Energy Telescope of EXOSAT, with countrates up to 25 cnts/s. in contrast to their optical and UV spectrum the total flux and spectral distribution at soft X-ray energies are highly sensitive to the effective temperature, structure and elemental composition of the dwarf's atmosphere. The imaging soft X-ray experiments onboard EXOSAT cover with large sensitivity the spectral region where the peak of emission of hot white dwarfs is expected to occur.I here review some of the (preliminary) results obtained so far with broadband X-ray photometry on a dozen or so white dwarfs, and some of the high-resolution spectra obtained for three white dwarfs with the grating spectrometers.  相似文献

We review results of correlated IR, optical and X-ray observations of GX 339-4 made from March 1981 through May 1984. In the soft X-ray state, the object does not show outstanding optical and X-ray variability. Night-to-night smooth optical variations of 0.3 magnitudes were however present during one observing run. In contrast, the hard X-ray state is characterised by strong erratic optical and X-ray fluctuations on time scales from 20 milliseconds to seconds, as well as 7 to 20 second quasi-periodic oscillations. The optical counterpart appears much redder in the IR during the hard state. Particular attention is drawn to the hard to soft X-ray transition which occured in June 1981. The shape of the IR to X-ray energy distribution is discussed. The unusual features of this black hole candidate are examined in the framework of the current theories of accretion.Based partly on observations obtained at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

Temporal and spectral characteristics of solar hard X-ray bursts are briefly reviewed. The merits of non-thermal and thermal flare models are discussed. The validity of these models may be checked by future measurements of X-ray polarization. Finally, some important results of recent satellite experiments are described providing information on the spatial distribution of hard X-ray sources: the multi-spacecraft observation of X-ray bursts and the imaging of X-ray sources by means of the HXIS instrument.Paper presented at the IX-th Lindau Workshop The Source Region of the Solar Wind.  相似文献

Designed primarily to study solar activity, Yohkoh includes an X-ray telescope that obtains full-sun coronal images which show a range of features. Coronal X-ray emission-exclusive of flares, is notable for its variability even in the largest structures. A mass ejection event is related to magnetic field reconnection. Such events exhibit both accelerated and decelerated behaviour. Coronal hole temperatures are estimated from the filter ratio method. A plasma component at around 2.106 K is identified. X-ray emission is detected from the South polar coronal hole. A preliminary comparison of Spartan coronagraph images with Yohkoh data suggests that polar plumes or rays are not connected to bright points.  相似文献

Observational evidence suggests that most — if not all — binary X-ray sources are neutron stars. The evolutionary status and possible formation mechanisms of the type I (massive) and type II (low-mass) X-ray binaries are discussed. The difference between the standard massive X-ray binaries and the Be/X-ray binaries is ascribed to a somewhat different evolutionary history and status, and possible reasons for the existence of short- and long — period X-ray pulsars are discussed. Type II X-ray sources in globular clusters were most probably formed by capture processes; their formation rate inferred from the observations indicates that only a small fraction ( 1 to 10 percent) of the originally formed neutron stars have remained in their clusters. Type II sources in the galactic bulge may also have formed from cataclysmic binaries in which a white dwarf was driven over the Chandrasekhar limit by accretion.  相似文献

The future X-ray missions for high resolution spectroscopy are briefly reviewed. ASTRO-H, planned for launch in 2014, will introduce microcalorimeters for the first time and reveal dynamical motions of hot gas in extended objects. High resolution spectroscopy will also be used for the search of missing baryons with oxygen lines in the local universe. Dedicated X-ray missions are also planned. A very large X-ray observatory IXO, under joint study of NASA, ESA and JAXA, will explore the evolution of the universe using X-ray spectroscopy as a very powerful tool.  相似文献

The cataclysmic variable EX Hydrae has been observed in X-rays with Einstein Observatory. A 67 min periodic X-ray modulation has been found in the energy range. 1 – 2 keV, whereas the source is approximately constant above 2 keV. The modulation is approx. in phase with the stable 47 min modulation in the optical brightness. The X-ray spectrum changes slightly with the 67 min phase but is consistent with a two component model with constant temperature only changing in relative intensity. Quasi-simultaneous optical observations were also obtained and used to extend the time base of the optical modulation. The result is indicative of a decrease in the 67 min period on a time scale of 3 106 yr. The implications for the hypothesis of a non-uniform rotating white dwarf as the origin of the 67 min optical and X-ray modulation are discussed.  相似文献

The binary system AM Herculis = 4U 1814 + 50 gives the first well ascertained example of an X-ray emitting magnetic white dwarf. The orbital period (3.1h) is apparent from X-ray to IR frequencies and in linear and circular polarization. Since the time of the identification of the X-ray source the system has been extensively studied. The observations (which range from 1 MeV to 20 m) are reviewed and compared with the present theory of X-ray emitting white dwarfs.  相似文献

The current status of the investigation of the soft X-ray diffuse background in the energy range 0.1–2.0 keV is reviewed. A consistent model, based on the soft X-ray brightness distribution and the energy spectrum over the sky, is derived. The observed diffuse background is predominantly of galactic origin and considered as thermal emission for the most part from a local hot region of temperature ≈106 K which includes the solar system. Several pronounced features of enhanced emission are interpreted in terms of hot regions with temperatures up to 3×106K, some of which are probably old supernova remnants. The properties of the soft X-ray emitting regions are discussed in relation to the observational results on O vi absorption.  相似文献

We report results from EXOSAT observations of the intermediate polar system 2A0526-328 (TV Col). The hard X-ray emission (2–8 keV) is modulated with a period of 1943 s, interpreted as the white-dwarf rotation period. Soft and hard X-ray emission show intensity minima, in phase with the orbital period of 0.2286 days; analysis of the hard X-ray spectra shows that these minima are caused by an extra low-energy absorption corresponding to a H column density of 4 × 1022 cm-2.  相似文献

Modern hydrodynamical simulations offer nowadays a powerful means to trace the evolution of the X-ray properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) during the cosmological history of the hierarchical build up of galaxy clusters. In this paper we review the current status of these simulations and how their predictions fare in reproducing the most recent X-ray observations of clusters. After briefly discussing the shortcomings of the self-similar model, based on assuming that gravity only drives the evolution of the ICM, we discuss how the processes of gas cooling and non-gravitational heating are expected to bring model predictions into better agreement with observational data. We then present results from the hydrodynamical simulations, performed by different groups, and how they compare with observational data. As terms of comparison, we use X-ray scaling relations between mass, luminosity, temperature and pressure, as well as the profiles of temperature and entropy. The results of this comparison can be summarised as follows: (a) simulations, which include gas cooling, star formation and supernova feedback, are generally successful in reproducing the X-ray properties of the ICM outside the core regions; (b) simulations generally fail in reproducing the observed “cool core” structure, in that they have serious difficulties in regulating overcooling, thereby producing steep negative central temperature profiles. This discrepancy calls for the need of introducing other physical processes, such as energy feedback from active galactic nuclei, which should compensate the radiative losses of the gas with high density, low entropy and short cooling time, which is observed to reside in the innermost regions of galaxy clusters.  相似文献

A balloon program in hard X-ray astronomy (20–200 keV) is jointly pursued by the Astronomisches Institut der Universität Tübingen (AIT) and the Max Planck-Institute für Extraterrestrische Physik in Garching (MPE). Since 1973 nine successful balloon flights have been performed from Texas and Australia. Here results on Centaurus A and on several galactic binary X-ray sources are summarized. In particular the high energy photon spectrum of Hercules X-1 and the evidence for the cyclotron line feature which was discovered by us in 1976 is reviewed.  相似文献

Highlights of the results obtained with Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite Hakucho are reviewed. After a brief account of instrumentation (Section 2), some new features of non-bursting, non-pulsating objects are presented (Sections 3–5). The main part of the present review is devoted for X-ray bursts which are found more complex than one might have thought (Sections 6–11). The observation of X-ray pulsar, including a change of spin rate of Vela X-1, is described (Section 12). The main results obtained in the first two years are summarized in Section 13.  相似文献
