??EIT waves?? are large-scale coronal bright fronts (CBFs) that were first observed in 195 Å images obtained using the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). Commonly called ??EIT waves??, CBFs typically appear as diffuse fronts that propagate pseudo-radially across the solar disk at velocities of 100?C700 km?s?1 with front widths of 50?C100 Mm. As their speed is greater than the quiet coronal sound speed (c s ??200 km?s?1) and comparable to the local Alfvén speed (v A ??1000 km?s?1), they were initially interpreted as fast-mode magnetoacoustic waves ( $v_{f}=(c_{s}^{2} + v_{A}^{2})^{1/2}$ ). Their propagation is now known to be modified by regions where the magnetosonic sound speed varies, such as active regions and coronal holes, but there is also evidence for stationary CBFs at coronal hole boundaries. The latter has led to the suggestion that they may be a manifestation of a processes such as Joule heating or magnetic reconnection, rather than a wave-related phenomena. While the general morphological and kinematic properties of CBFs and their association with coronal mass ejections have now been well described, there are many questions regarding their excitation and propagation. In particular, the theoretical interpretation of these enigmatic events as magnetohydrodynamic waves or due to changes in magnetic topology remains the topic of much debate.  相似文献

A number of previously unclassified multiplets of Fexiv, xiii, xii, and xi produced by transitions of the type 3s 23p n -3s3p n+1 are identified in the XUV spectrum of the Sun. The iron lines account for most of the previously unidentified strong lines between 330 and 370 Å. Solar observations of especial value for the investigation of the 300–400 Å region were the slitless spectroheliograms of September 22, 1968 (Purcell and Tousey, 1969) and November 4, 1969 (Tousey, 1971) — on which the image of a flare was recorded. Other solar identifications in the same spectral region include the resonance lines of Nixvii and Nixviii, and one 3p-3d multiplet of Fexiii. The solar blend at 417 Å involving the Fexv inter-combination line and Sxiv is resolved.  相似文献

RHESSI measurements relevant to the fundamental processes of energy release and particle acceleration in flares are summarized. RHESSI??s precise measurements of hard X-ray continuum spectra enable model-independent deconvolution to obtain the parent electron spectrum. Taking into account the effects of albedo, these show that the low energy cut-off to the electron power-law spectrum is typically ?tens of keV, confirming that the accelerated electrons contain a large fraction of the energy released in flares. RHESSI has detected a high coronal hard X-ray source that is filled with accelerated electrons whose energy density is comparable to the magnetic-field energy density. This suggests an efficient conversion of energy, previously stored in the magnetic field, into the bulk acceleration of electrons. A new, collisionless (Hall) magnetic reconnection process has been identified through theory and simulations, and directly observed in space and in the laboratory; it should occur in the solar corona as well, with a reconnection rate fast enough for the energy release in flares. The reconnection process could result in the formation of multiple elongated magnetic islands, that then collapse to bulk-accelerate the electrons, rapidly enough to produce the observed hard X-ray emissions. RHESSI??s pioneering ??-ray line imaging of energetic ions, revealing footpoints straddling a flare loop arcade, has provided strong evidence that ion acceleration is also related to magnetic reconnection. Flare particle acceleration is shown to have a close relationship to impulsive Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events observed in the interplanetary medium, and also to both fast coronal mass ejections and gradual SEP events. New instrumentation to provide the high sensitivity and wide dynamic range hard X-ray and ??-ray measurements, plus energetic neutral atom (ENA) imaging of SEPs above ??2 R??, will enable the next great leap forward in understanding particle acceleration and energy release is large solar eruptions??solar flares and associated fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs).  相似文献

Satellite lines, situated on the long wavelength side of the helium-like ion resonance line, can be observed in highly-ionized ions both in laboratory sources and from the Sun. Although seen for more than 30 years, these lines have only recently been classified in detail as inner-shell transitions in lithium-like ions. Laboratory experiments have shown that under steady-state conditions these satellites are produced by dielectronic recombination, although in transient ionizing plasmas direct inner-shell excitation can be important. Detailed calculations have been carried out for high Z ions up to copper, and the results can be compared with solar flare spectra in iron. Such comparisons allow both the electron temperature and the transient state of the plasma to be determined. Laboratory spectra from such high-Z ions are different in appearance, and may be dominated by processes resulting from the transient ionizing state of the plasma.  相似文献

In this paper we present new results from the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometers and the IUE spacecraft on V356 Sgr and β Lyr. The V356 Sgr observations cover, in detail, two eclipses and include one IUE high dispersion SWP image. During both eclipses the total strength of the UV emission lines were found to be invariant. Also, an uneclipsed UV continuum was detected at wavelengths shorter than 1600 Å. The IUE high dispersion SWP spectrum revealed that the emission lines are extremely broad, almost symmetrical lines with weak, slightly blue shifted absorption components. No evidence of carbon is seen in the emission or absorption spectrum of V356 Sgr in eclipse. A model for the origin of the circumstellar matter in this binary system is presented. The Voyager ultraviolet observations of β Lyr show a strong far-UV continuum that is detectable down to 912 Å The far-UV continuum flux level was variable on time scales shorter than the orbital period and displayed no obvious orbital modulation or eclipses. The spectral shape of the far-UV continuum closely resembles that of a UX UMa type cataclysmic variable. On 16 August 1985 an rapid brightening of the far-UV continuum was observed which was also reminiscent of cataclysmic variables. Analysis of the β Lyr data suggest that the central object must be small, with a radius on the order of 1 R or less.  相似文献

In the past several years, X-ray observations of the Sun made from rockets and satellites have demonstrated the existence of high temperature (20 × 106 – 100 × 106 K), low density plasmas associated with solar flare phenomena. In the hard X-ray range ( < 1 ), spectra of the flaring plasma have been obtained using proportional and scintillation counter detectors. It is possible from these data to determine the evolution of the hard X-ray flare spectrum as the burst progresses; and by assuming either a non-thermal or thermal (Maxwellian) electron distribution function, characteristic plasma parameters such as emission measure and temperature (for a thermal interpretation) can be determined. Thermal interpretations of hard X-ray data require temperatures of 100 × 106 K.In contrast, the soft X-ray flare spectrum (1 <<30 ) exhibits line emission from hydrogen-like and helium-like ions, e.g. Ne, Mg, Al, Si,... Fe, that indicates electron energies more characteristic of temperatures of 20 × 106 K. Furthermore, line intensity ratios obtained during the course of an event show that the flare plasma can only be described satisfactorily by assuming a source composed of several different temperature regions; and that the emission measures and temperatures of these regions appear to change as the flare evolves. Temperatures are determined from line ratios of hydrogen-like to helium-like ions for a number of different elements, e.g., S, Si, and Mg, and from the slope of the X-ray continuum which is assumed to be due to free-free and free-bound emission. There is no obvious indication in soft X-ray flare spectra of non-thermal processes, although accurate continuum measurements are difficult with the data obtained to date because of higher order diffraction effects due to the use of crystal spectrometers.Soft X-ray flare spectra also show satellite lines of the hydrogen-like and helium-like ions, notably the 1s 22s 2 S-1s2s2p 2 P transition of the lithium-like ion, and support the contention that in low density plasmas these lines are formed by dielectronic recombination to the helium-like ion. Also, series of allowed transitions of hydrogen-like and helium-like ions are strong, e.g., the Lyman series of S up to Lyman-, and ratios of the higher member lines to the Lyman- line can be compared with theoretical calculations of the relative line strengths obtained by assuming various processes of line formation. This review will discuss the X-ray spectrum of solar flares from 250 keV to 0.4 keV, but will be primarily concerned with the soft X-ray spectrum and the interpretation of emission lines and continuum features that lie in this spectral range.  相似文献

We report spacecraft measurements of the energy spectra of solar protons and other solar energetic particle properties during the 16 Ground Level Events (GLEs) of Solar Cycle 23. The measurements were made by eight instruments on the ACE, GOES, SAMPEX, and STEREO spacecraft and extend from ~0.1 to ~500–700?MeV. All of the proton spectra exhibit spectral breaks at energies ranging from ~2 to ~46?MeV and all are well fit by a double power-law shape. A comparison of GLE events with a larger sample of other solar energetic particle (SEP) events shows that the typical spectral indices are harder in GLE events, with a mean slope of ?3.18 at >40?MeV/nuc. In the energy range 45 to 80?MeV/nucleon about ~50?% of GLE events have properties in common with impulsive 3He-rich SEP events, including enrichments in Ne/O, Fe/O, 22Ne/20Ne, and elevated mean charge states of Fe. These 3He-rich events contribute to the seed population accelerated by CME-driven shocks. An analysis is presented of whether highly-ionized Fe ions observed in five events could be due to electron stripping during shock acceleration in the low corona. Making use of stripping calculations by others and a coronal density model, we can account for events with mean Fe charge states of 〈Q Fe〉≈+20 if the acceleration starts at ~1.24–1.6 solar radii, consistent with recent comparisons of CME trajectories and type-II radio bursts. In addition, we suggest that gradual stripping of remnant ions from earlier large SEP events may also contribute a highly-ionized suprathermal seed population. We also discuss how observed SEP spectral slopes relate to the energetics of particle acceleration in GLE and other large SEP events.  相似文献

3C 273 is the most extensively studied quasar both from the ground and from space. Recent satellite observations have given important information on the overall electromagnetic spectrum of 3C 273 in the -ray, X-ray, and UV ranges. The most salient results are: (i) the energy per decade of frequency emitted by 3C 273 is nearly constant between 6000 Å and 500 MeV and is 20 × 1046 erg s-1 for H = 50 km s-1 Mpc-1; (ii) there is no absorption in the soft X-ray range in contrast to the X-ray spectrum of Seyfert nuclei; (iii) the optical and UV spectra cannot be fitted by power-law spectra only, and the energy distribution in this range suggests that a substantial fraction of the energy in the UV is emitted as back-body radiation at 20 000 K. If the peculiar shape of the UV spectrum is indeed caused by black-body radiation, then an estimate of the energy emitted under this form is 2.5 × 1046erg s-1, corresponding to an optically thick disk of 1016 cm in diameter. The UV spectrum of 3C 273 shows absorption lines at zero redshift caused by interstellar matter in the disk and halo of our Galaxy. The strength of C iv 1550 in absorption indicates the presence of a hot outer region in the halo. Extragalactic objects with mostly continuous UV spectra, such as 3C 273, are very promising UV sources which allow us to observe the absorbing material over the entire line of sight throughout the galactic halo.  相似文献

Particle acceleration and loss in the million electron Volt (MeV) energy range (and above) is the least understood aspect of radiation belt science. In order to measure cleanly and separately both the energetic electron and energetic proton components, there is a need for a carefully designed detector system. The Relativistic Electron-Proton Telescope (REPT) on board the Radiation Belt Storm Probe (RBSP) pair of spacecraft consists of a stack of high-performance silicon solid-state detectors in a telescope configuration, a collimation aperture, and a thick case surrounding the detector stack to shield the sensors from penetrating radiation and bremsstrahlung. The instrument points perpendicular to the spin axis of the spacecraft and measures high-energy electrons (up to ~20 MeV) with excellent sensitivity and also measures magnetospheric and solar protons to energies well above E=100 MeV. The instrument has a large geometric factor (g=0.2 cm2?sr) to get reasonable count rates (above background) at the higher energies and yet will not saturate at the lower energy ranges. There must be fast enough electronics to avert undue dead-time limitations and chance coincidence effects. The key goal for the REPT design is to measure the directional electron intensities (in the range 10?2–106 particles/cm2?s?sr?MeV) and energy spectra (ΔE/E~25 %) throughout the slot and outer radiation belt region. Present simulations and detailed laboratory calibrations show that an excellent design has been attained for the RBSP needs. We describe the engineering design, operational approaches, science objectives, and planned data products for REPT.  相似文献

Major interplanetary shock waves have often been successfully associated with major solar flares. The interplanetary response to weaker solar events, e.g., eruptive prominences (EP) and slow coronal transients, is far less pronounced. Recently, progress has been made by combining the newly-available data of white-light-coronagraph measurements from the earth-orbiting satellite P78/1 (these data show the development of coronal transients between 2.5 and 10 R bd, in-situ plasma measurements from the HELIOS solar probes positioned mostly above the Sun's limb at solar distances between 60 and 200 R bd (showing the reactions of the interplanetary plasma), ground based Hα-coronagraphs (showing in a few cases the evolution of EP's from the Sun's limb up to 1.5 Abd). In the years 1979 to 1981 about 25 uniquely associated events were identified, 19 of which allow some detailed analysis. The events can be sorted into three main categories:
  • The ‘flare-type’: 13 events, probably all of them flare-related, transient speeds v t from 560 to 1460 km s?1, no evidence for post-acceleration of the transient (indicating impulsive injection), all transients followed by drastic interplanetary shock waves, some of them probably involving magnetic clouds.
  • The ‘EP-type’: 4 events, none of them flare-related, at least one was observed as an Hα-EP, transient speed from 200 to 410 km s-1, all post-accelerated (indicating ‘driven’ injection), all followed by shocks with at least one magnetic cloud, one showing presence of He+ and O2+ behind the shock.
  • The ‘NCDE-type’: 2 events, one observed as an Hα-EP, the other without known solar source, v t , = 130 and 470 km s?1, one post-accelerated, the other one not, considerable density increase in interplanetary plasma (however, in pressure equilibrium with surroundings), one event including shock, the other not. These two events may not belong to the same category.
  • Our results are not completely consistent with previous work which is mainly based on data from the Skylab era, 1973/74. This could be due to the different phase in the solar cycle. The study is being continued.  相似文献

EXOSAT PSD images and spectra are presented of the supernova remnant (SNR) PKS 1209-52 (G296.5+9.7. Milne 23). This source was observed for 8.5 hours in June, 1983. PSD images constructed in different energy intervals reveal that the spatial structure of the SNR is energy dependent. Comparison of the PSD and CMA images with the latest radio map of PKS 1209–52 shows some interesting correlations, especially between the X-ray and radio Hot Spots. The PSD spectrum of the SNR is fitted with a Raymond and Smith line-emission model: the best fit temperature is found to be 1.7×l06 K and the absorbing column is less than 2×1021 cm–2.A compact X-ray source lies within the radio shell of PKS 1209–52, near the centre of the remnant. The PSD spectrum of this object is somewhat harder than that of the SNR, but does not require a significantly different absorbing column density. The possible association of the SNR and the compact object is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Solar cycle 23 witnessed the most complete set of observations of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) associated with the Ground Level Enhancement (GLE) events. We present an overview of the observed properties of the GLEs and those of the two associated phenomena, viz., flares and CMEs, both being potential sources of particle acceleration. Although we do not find a striking correlation between the GLE intensity and the parameters of flares and CMEs, the solar eruptions are very intense involving X-class flares and extreme CME speeds (average ~2000?km/s). An M7.1 flare and a 1200?km/s CME are the weakest events in the list of 16 GLE events. Most (80?%) of the CMEs are full halos with the three non-halos having widths in the range 167 to 212?degrees. The active regions in which the GLE events originate are generally large: 1290?msh (median 1010?msh) compared to 934?msh (median: 790?msh) for SEP-producing active regions. For accurate estimation of the CME height at the time of metric type?II onset and GLE particle release, we estimated the initial acceleration of the CMEs using flare and CME observations. The initial acceleration of GLE-associated CMEs is much larger (by a factor of 2) than that of ordinary CMEs (2.3?km/s2 vs. 1?km/s2). We confirmed the initial acceleration for two events for which CME measurements are available in the inner corona. The GLE particle release is delayed with respect to the onset of all electromagnetic signatures of the eruptions: type?II bursts, low frequency type?III bursts, soft X-ray flares and CMEs. The presence of metric type?II radio bursts some 17?min (median: 16?min; range: 3 to 48?min) before the GLE onset indicates shock formation well before the particle release. The release of GLE particles occurs when the CMEs reach an average height of ~3.09?R s (median: 3.18?R s ; range: 1.71 to 4.01?R s ) for well-connected events (source longitude in the range W20–W90). For poorly connected events, the average CME height at GLE particle release is ~66?% larger (mean: 5.18?R s ; median: 4.61?R s ; range: 2.75–8.49?R s ). The longitudinal dependence is consistent with shock accelerations because the shocks from poorly connected events need to expand more to cross the field lines connecting to an Earth observer. On the other hand, the CME height at metric type?II burst onset has no longitudinal dependence because electromagnetic signals do not require magnetic connectivity to the observer. For several events, the GLE particle release is very close to the time of first appearance of the CME in the coronagraphic field of view, so we independently confirmed the CME height at particle release. The CME height at metric type?II burst onset is in the narrow range 1.29 to 1.8?R s , with mean and median values of 1.53 and 1.47?R s . The CME heights at metric type?II burst onset and GLE particle release correspond to the minimum and maximum in the Alfvén speed profile. The increase in CME speed between these two heights suggests an increase in Alfvénic Mach number from?2 to?3. The CME heights at GLE particle release are in good agreement with those obtained from the velocity dispersion analysis (Reames in Astrophys. J. 693:812, 2009a; Astrophys. J. 706:844, 2009b) including the source longitude dependence. We also discuss the implications of the delay of GLE particle release with respect to complex type?III bursts by ~18?min (median: 16?in; range: 2 to 44?min) for the flare acceleration mechanism. A?similar analysis is also performed on the delay of particle release relative to the hard X-ray emission.  相似文献

We present measurements of energetic hydrogen and oxygen atoms (ENAs) on the nightside of Mars detected by the neutral particle detector (NPD) of ASPERA-3 on Mars Express. We focus on the observations for which the field-of-view of NPD was directed at the nightside of Mars or at the region around the limb, thus monitoring the flow of ENAs towards the nightside of the planet. We derive energy spectra and total fluxes, and have compiled maps of hydrogen ENA outflow. The hydrogen ENA intensities reach 105 cm−2 sr−1 s−1, but no oxygen ENA signals above the detection threshold of 104 cm−2 sr−1 s−1 are observed. These intensities are considerably lower than most theoretical predictions. We explain the discrepancy as due to an overestimation of the charge-exchange processes in the models for which too high an exospheric density was assumed. Recent UV limb emission measurements (Galli et al., this issue) point to a hydrogen exobase density of 1010 m−3 and a very hot hydrogen component, whereas the models were based on a hydrogen exobase density of 1012 m−3 and a temperature of 200 K predicted by Krasnopolsky and Gladstone (1996). Finally, we estimate the global atmospheric loss rate of hydrogen and oxygen due to the production of ENAs.  相似文献

    Solar gamma rays
The theory of gamma-ray production in solar flares is treated in detail. Both lines and continuum are produced. The strongest line predicted at 2.225 MeV with a width of less than 100 eV and detected at 2.24±0.02 MeV, is due to neutron capture by protons in the photosphere. Its intensity is dependent on the photospheric 3He abundance. The neutrons are produced in nuclear reactions of flare accelerated particles which also produce positrons and prompt nuclear deexcitation lines. The strongest prompt lines are at 4.43 MeV from 12C and at 6.2 from 16O and 15N. These lines result from both direct excitation and spallation. The widths of individual prompt lines are determined by nuclear kinematics. The width of the 4.43 MeV line is 100 keV and that of the 6.2 MeV feature is 300 keV. Both these lines have been observed from a solar flare. Other potentially observable lines are predicted at 0.845 and 1.24 MeV from 56Fe, at 1.63 MeV principally from 14N and 20Ne, at 1.78 MeV from 28Si, at 5.3 MeV from 15O and 15N, and at 7.12 MeV from 16O. The widths of the iron lines are only a few keV, while those of the other lines are about 100 keV. The only other observed line is at 0.511 MeV from positron annihilation. The width of this line is determined by the temperature, and its temporal variation depends on the density of the ambient medium in the annihilation region. Positrons can also annihilate from the 3 S state of positronium to produce a 3-photon continuum below 0.511 MeV. In addition, the lines of 7Li and 7Be at 0.478 keV and 0.431 keV, which have kinematical widths of 30 keV, blend into a strong feature just below the 0.511 MeV line. From the comparison of the observed and calculated intensities of the line at 4.4 MeV to that of the 2.2 MeV line it is possible to obtain information on the spectrum of accelerated nuclei in flares. Moreover, from the absolute intensities of these lines the total number of accelerated nuclei at the Sun and their heating of the flare region can be estimated. We find that about 1033 protons of energies greater than 30 MeV were produced in the 1972, August 4 flare. The gamma-ray continuum, produced by electron bremsstrahlung, allows the determination of the spectrum and number of accelerated electrons in the MeV region. From the comparison of the line and continuum intensities we find a proton-to-electron ratio of about 10 to 102 at the same energy for the 1972, August 4 flare. For the same flare the protons above 2.5 MeV which are responsible for the gamma-ray emission produce a few percent of the heat generated by the electrons which make the hard X-rays above 20 keV.NAS-NRC Resident Research Associate.Research supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant GP 31620.  相似文献

Recent aircraft as well as rotorcraft design technologies include more and more composite materials. Their high mechanical characteristics and high mass specific energy absorption capability motivate their use in large primary structures as well as in sub-floor structural and crashworthy components in preference to metals. Due to the increased performance of computers and new explicit finite element (FE) software developments industry now considers using crash simulation technologies to study the crashworthiness of new aircraft design. In order to address the crash analysis of composite structures, which is much more difficult than the behaviour of ductile metallic structures, a German/French research co-operation was set up between ONERA and DLR. This paper summarises results from the first 3 years collaboration and some work performed within a European research project on composite fuselage structures. In the first part of the paper, ONERA presents its contribution to the characterisation of composite materials from 10−5 s−1 up to 100 s−1 on hydraulic machines. Simulations have been undertaken to model the tests and evaluate the FE codes. In the second part DLR studies are presented on the application of a commercial explicit FE code to simulate the behaviour of generic energy absorbing composite sub-floor elements, representative for helicopters and general aviation aircraft, under low velocity crash conditions (up to 15 m/s). This includes some comparisons between predicted structural response and failure modes with observed test results.  相似文献

Single station solar wind velocity measurements using the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) in India (operating at 327 MHz) are reported for the period August 1992 to August 1993. Interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations on a large number of compact radio sources covering a latitudinal range of ±80° were used to derive solar wind velocities using the method of fitting a power law model to the observed IPS spectra. The data shows a velocity versus heliographic latitude pattern which is similar to that reported by Rickett and Coles (1991) for the 1981–1982 period. However, the average of the measured equatorial velocities are higher, being about 470 km s–1 compared to their value of 400 km s–1. The distribution of electron density variations (N e ) between 50R and 90R was also determined and it was found that N e was about 30% less at the poles as compared to the equator.  相似文献

Since the first reports of oscillations in prominences in the 1930s, there have been major theoretical and observational developments to understand the nature of these oscillatory phenomena, leading to the whole new field of the so-called “prominence seismology”. There are two types of oscillatory phenomena observed in prominences; “small-amplitude oscillations” (2–3 km?s?1), which are quite common, and “large-amplitude oscillations” (>20 km?s?1) for which observations are scarce. Large-amplitude oscillations have been found as “winking filament” in Hα as well as motion in the plane-of-sky in Hα, EUV, micro-wave and He 10830 observations. Historically, it has been suggested that the large-amplitude oscillations in prominences were triggered by disturbances such as fast-mode MHD waves (Moreton wave) produced by remote flares. Recent observations show, in addition, that near-by flares or jets can also create such large-amplitude oscillations in prominences. Large-amplitude oscillations, which are observed both in transverse as well as longitudinal direction, have a range of periods varying from tens of minutes to a few hours. Using the observed period of oscillation and simple theoretical models, the obtained magnetic field in prominences has shown quite a good agreement with directly measured one and, therefore, justifies prominence seismology as a powerful diagnostic tool. On rare occasions, when the large-amplitude oscillations have been observed before or during the eruption, the oscillations may be applied to diagnose the stability and the eruption mechanism. Here we review the recent developments and understanding in the observational properties of large-amplitude oscillations and their trigger mechanisms and stability in the context of prominence seismology.  相似文献

The HOPE mass spectrometer of the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) mission (renamed the Van Allen Probes) is designed to measure the in situ plasma ion and electron fluxes over 4π sr at each RBSP spacecraft within the terrestrial radiation belts. The scientific goal is to understand the underlying physical processes that govern the radiation belt structure and dynamics. Spectral measurements for both ions and electrons are acquired over 1 eV to 50 keV in 36 log-spaced steps at an energy resolution ΔE FWHM/E≈15 %. The dominant ion species (H+, He+, and O+) of the magnetosphere are identified using foil-based time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry with channel electron multiplier (CEM) detectors. Angular measurements are derived using five polar pixels coplanar with the spacecraft spin axis, and up to 16 azimuthal bins are acquired for each polar pixel over time as the spacecraft spins. Ion and electron measurements are acquired on alternate spacecraft spins. HOPE incorporates several new methods to minimize and monitor the background induced by penetrating particles in the harsh environment of the radiation belts. The absolute efficiencies of detection are continuously monitored, enabling precise, quantitative measurements of electron and ion fluxes and ion species abundances throughout the mission. We describe the engineering approaches for plasma measurements in the radiation belts and present summaries of HOPE measurement strategy and performance.  相似文献

The ISEE-1 and 2 spacecraft contain two complementary experiments to measure the ambient electron density by radio techniques: a propagation experiment which measures the integrated electron density between ISEE-1 and 2, and a resonance sounder which measures the electron density in the vicinity of ISEE-1, and also provides AC electric field data. These experiments have been described elsewhere (Harvey et al., 1978). Results from these two experiments are presented here for the first time. The propagation experiment permits high time resolution studies of density fluctuations in the solar wind and magnetospheric frontier regions. The sounder experiment has detected for the first time plasma resonances in the solar wind and in the Earth's magnetosheath, as well as in the regions of the magnetosphere where resonances have already been observed by the spacecraft GEOS-1. We present here a preliminary review of the different types of electric field noise observed in the solar wind and magnetosheath, and discuss their relationship to the measured plasma density.CRPE/CNET, 92131 Issy-les-Moulineaux, France.  相似文献

A review is presented of current theories of nucleosynthesis. The predicted contributions from (1) cosmological nucleosynthesis, (2) super-massive stars, (3) non-violent (quasi-static) stellar evolution, (4) supernova explosions, (5) cosmic ray interactions with the interstellar medium and (6) nova explosions to the observed solar system abundances are summarized. Recent studies of explosive nucleosynthesis in supernovae and of the production of lithium, beryllium and boron by the interaction of cosmic rays with interstellar gas are emphasized. Observations of stellar spectra which either impose limitations upon or provide confirmation of various aspects of these theories are noted, as are several critical nuclear experiments. The general picture which emerges is incouraging in that most of the major abundance features appear to be at least qualitatively understood, but significant further research is required.  相似文献
