The process of element segregation in stars (also called "microscopic diffusion") has to be introduced in all computations of stellar structure to obtain consistent models. Although recognized by the pioneers of stellar physics, this process has long been forgotten, except for white dwarfs and for the so-called "chemically peculiar stars". More recently helioseismology has given evidence that this process occurs in the Sun, and leads to helium and heavier element depletion by about 20 percent. Some macroscopic motions (mild mixing) must also occur below the convection zone in order to account for the lithium depletion. These motions do not prevent the segregation : they only slightly smooth the abundance gradients. These results are presented here and the connexion with the 3He abundance is discussed. The importance of these processes for Pop II stars is also developped.  相似文献

We use a sample of 45 low-metallicity H II regions in blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies to determine the primordial helium abundance YP with a precision better than 5%. We have carefully investigated the physical effects which may make the He I line intensities deviate from their recombination values such as collisional and fluorescent enhancements, underlying He I stellar absorption and absorption by Galactic interstellar Na I. By extrapolating the Y vs. O/H and Y vs. N/H linear regressions to O/H = N/H = 0, we obtain YP = 0.244±0.002 and 0.245±0.001, respectively, higher than previous determinations (YP = 0.230 - 0.234). Part of the difference comes from the fact that previous investigators have not taken into account underlying He I stellar absorption, especially in the NW component of the BCD I Zw 18 which, because of its extremely low metallicity plays a key role in the determination of YP. We derive a slope dY/dZ = 2.3±1.0, considerably smaller than those derived before. With this smaller slope and taking into account the errors, chemical evolution models with an outflow of well-mixed material can be built for star-forming dwarf galaxies which satisfy all the observational constraints. Our YP gives bh 50 2 = 0.058±0.007,f consistent with the lower limit set by dynamical measurements and X-ray observations of clusters of galaxies. It is also consistent, within the framework of standard big bang nucleosynthesis theory, with measurements of primordial 7Li in galactic halo stars and with the D/H abundance measured in absorption systems toward quasars by Burles and Tytler (1997).  相似文献

An overview of the discussions of the working group on Low-Z stars is presented. Key questions addressed include how the abundances of lithium observed in these stars should be compared to that produced in the Big Bang. Evidence for and against a small star-to-star variation in Li abundances is reviewed, and whether such a variation, if real, necessarily indicates that stellar depletion has occurred, necessitating correction to the value compared to primordial nucleosynthesis calculations. A second key question concerns how and where the light elements are produced. Taken together, their abundance ratios strongly suggest that in low-Z stars the light elements other than 7Li are produced by cosmic ray spallation. The most recent evidence suggests that a minority of this spallation happens in the general interstellar medium, and that a larger fraction might happen in the immediate vicinity of Supernovae, possibly producing observable star-to-star variation. Finally, the question of the overall metallicity of the Galaxy is discussed. How homogeneous in space and time is its evolution? Can we identify subsystems or individual stars which indicate a pregalactic contribution to the galactic metallicity?

An historical view of the discovery and subsequent studies of lithium in low-Z stars is presented. The determination of the lithium abundance in extremely low-Z stars, found in the vast Beers, Preston and Shectman survey, is reviewed. The problem of the exact connection between the lithium abundance found in the photospheres of low-Z stars and the true cosmological abundance of lithium is discussed, and identified as the most important problem to be solved in the coming years.  相似文献

The primordial helium abundance YP is important for cosmology and the ratio Y/Z of the changes relative to primordial abundances constrains models of stellar evolution. While the most accurate estimates of YP come from emission lines in extragalactic H II regions, they involve an extrapolation to zero metallicity which itself is closely tied up with the slope Y/Z. Recently certain systematic effects have come to light in this exercise which make it useful to have an independent estimate of Y/Z from fine structure in the main sequence of nearby stars. We derive such an estimate from Hipparcos data for stars with Z Z and find values between 2 and 3, which are consistent with stellar models, but still have a large uncertainty.  相似文献

This paper briefly reviews a few relevant features about the abundances of light elements (D, 4He, 6Li, 7Li, 9Be) in the Milky Way. It places special emphasis on metal-poor stars. Observational concerns are discussed. The use of 7Li and 6Li as cosmological probes and of 9Be as a chronometer for the early evolution of our Galaxy are discussed.  相似文献

We present new estimates of He/H and CNO abundance ratios in the atmospheres of a selection of B2 supergiants which imply that the C/N ratio in the most luminous Ia stars is close to its equilibrium value. The is also some evidence for more moderate CN abundance anomalies in the B2Ib and B2II supergiants. These results, together with other recent work, imply that the effects of the CNO bi-cycle on the composition of B-supergiant atmospheres are most severe for the more luminous and massive stars. Furthermore, studies of LMC B-supergiants indicate that a small fraction of these very luminous stars are nitrogen weak. This picture is qualitatively consistent with theoretical predictions whenever massive stars perform blue loops in the HR diagram, returning from a red supergiant phase to become core helium burning blue supergiants with atmospheres contaminated by nuclear processed material.  相似文献

We report on our continuing efforts to determine 3He abundances in H II regions and planetary nebulae. Our detections of 3He in some PNe show that some stars produce large amounts of 3He. However the H II region abundances show no evidence for this production. From our sample of > 40 H II regions, the subsample which should yield the most reliable abundances has 3He/H abundances which scatter between 1-2 × 10-5. There is no trend with either galactocentric distance or metallicity. Even if we do not understand the underlying mechanisms, we see empirically that stars neither produce nor destroy 3He in a major way. We thus suggest that the level of the "3He Plateau" (3He/H = 1.5 -0.5 +1.0 × 10-5) is a reasonable estimate for the primordial 3He.  相似文献

Evolutionary models allow an assignment of both a mass and a luminosity to a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star in a cluster, and hence allow a determination of the Bolometric Correction (B.C.). The B.C.'s derived for WN stars range from –4.0 to –6.0 with the expected trend of larger values (in absolute values) for stars with higher excitation spectra. For WC stars, there is little evidence for a similar trend; most observations presented here are consistent with B.C.=–4.5, as found by Smith and Maeder (1989). The convergence of B.C. values derived from evolutionary and atmospheric models is extremely satisfactory, giving increased confidence in both methods.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations(LES) have been performed to investigate the flow and combustion fields in the scramjet of the German Aerospace Center(DLR). Turbulent combustion is modeled by the tabulated thermo-chemistry approach in combination with the presumed probability density function(PDF). A b-function is used to model the distribution of the mixture fraction, while two different PDFs, d-function(Model I) and b-function(Model II), are applied to model the reaction progress. Temperature is obtained by solving filtered energy transport equation and the reaction rate of the progress variable is rescaled by pressure to consider the effects of compressibility. The adaptive mesh refinement(AMR) technique is used to properly capture shock waves, boundary layers, shear layers and flame structures. Statistical results of temperature and velocity predicted by Model II show better accuracy than that predicted by Model I. The results of scatter points and mixture fraction-conditional variables indicate the significant differences between Model I and Model II. It is concluded that second moment information in the presumed PDF of the reaction progress is very important in the simulation of supersonic combustion. It is also found that an unstable flame with extinction and ignition develops in the shear layers of bluff body and a fuelrich partially premixed flame stabilizes in the central recirculation bubble.  相似文献

Recent spectroscopic results on stellar and solar abundances are reviewed with special reference to (a) Standard abundance distribution (Sun, hot stars, diffuse nebulae); (b) Abundance peculiarities related to stellar evolution (red giants showing results of H-burning and s-process, peculiar and metallic-lined stars); and (c) Population effects that may be related to the evolution of the Galaxy (correlation between stellar age and metal abundance, differences in details of heavyelement mixture in atmospheric composition of normal stars that have not reached an advanced evolutionary stage).  相似文献

The equation of state is one of the three fundamental ingredients used to construct stellar models. The plasma of the interiors of stars such as the Sun is only slightly non-ideal. However, the extraordinary accuracy of the helioseismological data requires refined equations of state. It turned out to be necessary to include a Coulomb correction, commonly evaluated in the Debye-Hückel approximation. Higher-order non-ideal effects have implications as well, both for plasma physics and for solar physics. As a typical example, the recently studied thermodynamic consequence of excited states in compound particles is discussed. This effect is of considerable relevance in the helioseismic determination of the helium abundance in the solar convection zone. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A theoretical counterpart to the Barnes-Evans relation between stellar surface brightness and V-R color has been calculated from model atmospheres for parameters appropriate to RR Lyrae stars. Such a relation can be used to derive stellar angular diameters from V,R photometry and, when applied to variable stars and combined with a radial velocity curve, to derive radii, distances, and absolute magnitudes by the method of Barnes et al. (1977, MNRAS,178, 661). This was done for RR Lyr and X Ari using the photometry of Moffett and Barnes (1980, private communication) and radial velocities from the literature. The resulting absolute magnitudes are Mv = ± 0.59 + 0.25 for X Ari and Mv = 0.61 ± 0.35 for RR Lyr. The method is shown to be a very accurate way of determining radii, distances, and absolute magnitudes for RR Lyrae stars which compares very favorably to the variations of the Baade-Wesselink technique currently in use.  相似文献

Stratified Non-LTE models for expanding atmospheres became available in the recent years. They are based on the idealizing assumptions of spherical symmetry, stationarity and radiative equilibrium. From a critical discussion we conclude that this standard model is basically adequate for describing real Wolf-Rayet atmospheres and hence can be applied for quantitative spectral analyses of their spectra.By means of these models, the fundamental parameters have been determined meanwhile for the majority of the known Galactic WR stars. Most of them populate a vertical strip in the Herzsprung-Russell diagram at effective temperatures of 35 kK, the luminosities ranging from 104.5 to 105.9 L . Only early-type WN stars with strong lines and WC stars are hotter. The chemical composition of WR atmospheres corresponds to nuclear-processed material (WN: hydrogen burning in the CNO cycle; WC: helium burning). Hydrogen is depleted but still detectable in the cooler part of the WN subclass.Different scenarios for the evolutionary formation of the Wolf-Rayet stars are discussed in the light of the empirical data provided from the spectral analyses. Post-red-supergiant evolution can principally explain the basic observational properties, except the rather low luminosities of a considerable fraction of WN stars. Among the alternative scenarios, close-binary evolution can theoretically produce the least-luminous WN stars. However, final conclusions about the evolutionary formation of the WR stars are not yet possible.  相似文献

A technique for calculating the derogation in the difference in depth of modulation (DDM) signal, used for aircraft glide slope guidance, due to slightly rough ground surfaces is developed. The contributions to the scattered signal from diffuse and specular scatter are treated separately. The diffuse derogation is calculated based on empirical data, and an average variation is presented. The specular contributions to the variation in the signal is calculated based on expanding the half-plane diffraction solution in terms of the ground roughness. A specular scattered deviation about the mean signal is then obtained by statistically averaging over normally distributed ground heights. Results of the analysis indicate that substantial relaxation in grading criteria can be effected.  相似文献

Taking as example a 60M star of solar metallicity, the state of the art of model calculations for very massive, from the main sequence to the supernova stage, is reviewed. It is argued that — due to the simple internal structure of Wolf-Rayet stars — the post main sequence evolutionary phases are currently those which are better understood. A brief discussion of the supernova outcome from very massive stars is given. Then, the more uncertain main sequence evolution is discussed. A first attempt to incorporate results about pulsational instabilities of very massive stars in stellar evolutionary calculations is performed. On its basis, a new type of evolutionary sequence for very massive stars is obtained, namely O-star → Of-star → H-rich WNL → LBV → H-poor WNL → WNE → WC → SN. This scenario is shown to correspond better to many observed properties of very massive stars than the standard one. It includes a model for the prototype LBV P Cygni.  相似文献

After a short historical (and highly subjective) introduction to the field, I discuss our current understanding of the origin and evolution of the light nuclides D, 3He, 4He, 6Li, 7Li, 9Be, 10B and 11B. Despite considerable observational and theoretical progress, important uncertainties still persist for each and every one of those nuclides. The present-day abundance of D in the local interstellar medium is currently uncertain, making it difficult to infer the recent chemical evolution of the solar neighborhood. To account for the observed quasi-constancy of 3He abundance from the Big Bang to our days, the stellar production of that nuclide must be negligible; however, the scarce observations of its abundance in planetary nebulae seem to contradict this idea. The observed Be and B evolution as primaries suggests that the source composition of cosmic rays has remained ∼constant since the early days of the Galaxy, a suggestion with far reaching implications for the origin of cosmic rays; however, the main idea proposed to account for that constancy, namely that superbubbles are at the source of cosmic rays, encounters some serious difficulties. The best explanation for the mismatch between primordial Li and the observed “Spite-plateau” in halo stars appears to be depletion of Li in stellar envelopes, by some yet poorly understood mechanism. But this explanation impacts on the level of the recently discovered early “6Li plateau”, which (if confirmed), seriously challenges current ideas of cosmic ray nucleosynthesis.  相似文献

The most recent chemical evolution models for D and 3He are reviewed and their results compared with the available data.Models in agreement with the major galactic observational constraints predict deuterium depletion from the Big Bang to the present epoch smaller than a factor of 3 and therefore do not allow for D/H primordial abundances larger than 5 × 10-5. Models predicting higher D consumption do not seem to be able to reproduce other observed features of our galaxy (e.g. SFR, abundances, abundance ratios and/or gradients of heavier elements, metallicity distribution of G-dwarfs).Observational and theoretical 3He abundances can be reconciled with each other if the majority of low mass stars experience in the red giant phase a deep mixing allowing the consumption of most of the 3He produced during core-hydrogen burning.  相似文献
