The X-Ray Source 2S0114+650 discovered by SAS-3 in 1978 has been associated with a highly reddened star showing broad H emission. We observed this star with the LWR spectrograph on board the I.U.E. Satellite on Sep. 1980 and Feb. 1981. An Ultraviolet flux was detected longward of the 2200 Å bump, consistent with the B0.5 spectral classification and the values of V=11 and E(B-V)=1.48, The UV extinction in the region around 2200Å seems to deviate from the standard interstellar extinction law.European Space Agency Satellite Tracking Station P.O.Box 54065 — Madrid — SpainBased on observations by the International Ultraviolet Explorer, collected at the Villafranca Satellite Tracking Station of the European Space Agency.  相似文献

In this paper we present new results from the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometers and the IUE spacecraft on V356 Sgr and Lyr. The V356 Sgr observations cover, in detail, two eclipses and include one IUE high dispersion SWP image. During both eclipses the total strength of the UV emission lines were found to be invariant. Also, an uneclipsed UV continuum was detected at wavelengths shorter than 1600 Å. The IUE high dispersion SWP spectrum revealed that the emission lines are extremely broad, almost symmetrical lines with weak, slightly blue shifted absorption components. No evidence of carbon is seen in the emission or absorption spectrum of V356 Sgr in eclipse. A model for the origin of the circumstellar matter in this binary system is presented. The Voyager ultraviolet observations of Lyr show a strong far-UV continuum that is detectable down to 912 Å The far-UV continuum flux level was variable on time scales shorter than the orbital period and displayed no obvious orbital modulation or eclipses. The spectral shape of the far-UV continuum closely resembles that of a UX UMa type cataclysmic variable. On 16 August 1985 an rapid brightening of the far-UV continuum was observed which was also reminiscent of cataclysmic variables. Analysis of the Lyr data suggest that the central object must be small, with a radius on the order of 1 R or less. This work is supported by NASA Grants NAGW-587 and NAG5-441.  相似文献

We summarize the attempts by our group and others to derive constraints on variations of fundamental constants over cosmic time using quasar absorption lines. Most upper limits reside in the range 0.5–1.5×10?5 at the 3σ level over a redshift range of approximately 0.5–2.5 for the fine-structure constant, α, the proton-to-electron mass ratio, μ and a combination of the proton gyromagnetic factor and the two previous constants, g p(α 2/μ) ν , for only one claimed variation of α. It is therefore very important to perform new measurements to improve the sensitivity of the numerous methods to at least <0.1×10?5 which should be possible in the next few years. Future instrumentations on ELTs in the optical and/or ALMA, EVLA and SKA pathfinders in the radio will undoutedly boost this field by allowing to reach much better signal-to-noise ratios at higher spectral resolution and to perform measurements on molecules in the ISM of high redshift galaxies.  相似文献

The advantages of high resolution UV spectroscopy for the investigation of the solar atmosphere are stressed while the limitations in the areas of instrumentation and diagnosis are discussed. The recent achievements (made essentially by Skylab, OSO-8 and rocket instruments) are reviewed and discussed. It is shown that high resolution UV solar spectroscopy has improved our knowledge of the dynamics of the upper layers of the solar atmosphere. Within the present instrument capabilities the birth of coronal expansion is shown to take place at the top of the transition region. The existence of downward flows over the bright regions of the network is evidenced from redshifts or transition region and chromospheric optically thin lines: velocities as large as 22 km s-1 have been measured in O vi. Short period waves (95 s) have been detected in lines of Si ii at chromospheric levels in addition to the well known 300s and 180 s photospheric and chromospheric oscillations. There is strong evidence that optically thin chromospheric and transition region lines are broadened by a nonthermal velocity component which is maximum at 1.3 × 105 K and decreases at higher temperatures. This may indicate the presence of unresolved acoustic or magnetohydrodynamic waves so oftenly set fourth as the source of chromospheric and coronal heating.Contradictions between the various results are pointed out and discussed. They might be attributed to the different angular resolution of the instruments, a key parameter for future space observations. It is suggested that the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) and the Grazing Incidence Solar Telescope (GRIST) which are presently under phase A studies at NASA and ESA be considered as a tandem of instruments to fly on Spacelab in the 1980's. Both their angular and spectral resolution appear sufficient to resolve most of the problems under discussion today.Review presented at the Vth Conference on UV and X-ray Spectroscopy of Astrophysical and Laboratory Plasmas, London, July 4–7, 1977.  相似文献

3C 273 is the most extensively studied quasar both from the ground and from space. Recent satellite observations have given important information on the overall electromagnetic spectrum of 3C 273 in the -ray, X-ray, and UV ranges. The most salient results are: (i) the energy per decade of frequency emitted by 3C 273 is nearly constant between 6000 Å and 500 MeV and is 20 × 1046 erg s-1 for H = 50 km s-1 Mpc-1; (ii) there is no absorption in the soft X-ray range in contrast to the X-ray spectrum of Seyfert nuclei; (iii) the optical and UV spectra cannot be fitted by power-law spectra only, and the energy distribution in this range suggests that a substantial fraction of the energy in the UV is emitted as back-body radiation at 20 000 K. If the peculiar shape of the UV spectrum is indeed caused by black-body radiation, then an estimate of the energy emitted under this form is 2.5 × 1046erg s-1, corresponding to an optically thick disk of 1016 cm in diameter. The UV spectrum of 3C 273 shows absorption lines at zero redshift caused by interstellar matter in the disk and halo of our Galaxy. The strength of C iv 1550 in absorption indicates the presence of a hot outer region in the halo. Extragalactic objects with mostly continuous UV spectra, such as 3C 273, are very promising UV sources which allow us to observe the absorbing material over the entire line of sight throughout the galactic halo.  相似文献

The instrument configuration and performance characteristics of the X-ray imaging telescopes on EXOSAT are described. The instrument comprises two fully independent Wolter I imaging telescopes. Each telescope can be used in either of two principal modes: (i) an imaging mode with either a position sensitive proportional counter or a channel multiplier array plate in the focal plane, (ii) a spectrometer mode which features a 500 lines/mm and/or a 1000 lines/mm transmission grating as dispersive element.Preliminary results from the calibration of the fully integrated experiment indicate an ultimate angular resolution of 8.5 arc sec full width at half maximum or 17.5 arc sec half-power beam width. The ultimate wavelength resolution in the spectrometer mode ranges from 1Å for wavelengths below 50Å, to 5Å at wavelengths near 300Å.A method for estimating the telescope performance is given which reasonably accounts for the influence of the X-ray source spectrum and the degree of interstellar absorption on the counting statistics.A comparison between EXOSAT and the EINSTEIN telescope in terms of band width/resolution and minimum source detectability shows an enhanced potential for EXOSAT relative to EINSTEIN for sources with T 107K and low column densities (< 4 × 1020cm–2) and a reduced potential for sources with hard, or heavily cut-off, spectra.  相似文献

In this paper a standard intensity source is described consisting of a thermal argon plasma with small additives of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. These gases are introduced in such a concentration to produce a series of optically thick spectral lines in the region 1100 Å to 3100 Å. The intensity in an optically thick line center is given by the Kirchhoff-Planck-function B (T) which is determined if the plasma temperature is known. The continuous character of the function allows for interpolation between the spectral lines. At longer wave lengths above 1800 Å only two carbon I-lines are found to be optically thick. Here the optically thin argon continuum is calibrated against the carbon I-lines and is used as an additional standard emission.By this procedure an absolute intensity scale is constructed at every wave length between 1100 Å and 3100 Å.The precision of the absolute intensities depends essentially on the precision of the temperature measurement for the plasma. Four different spectroscopic methods are used for this determination giving a temperature of 12540 K with an error of ±1 % to ±2 %. This means an error of ±10 % to ±20 % for the absolute intensity scale. The internal consistency of the measurements is better than ±2 %A plasma with these properties is produced in a wall-stabilized cascade arc burning through a central hole in a stack of refrigerated discs. By an adequate flow pattern of argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide an argon window is formed through which the radiation of the added gases leaves the arc axially without self-absorption.The arc is burning at a pressure of 1 atm, and a windowless light path to a vacuum spectrograph is formed by a 3 chamber differential pumping stage allowing continous observation. As a result the absolute intensities of the optically thick lines observed at high resolution are given. Moreover, the total spectral energy flux of the light source is presented for a lower resolution. In the range 2500 Å to 3100 Å the absolute scale overlaps the useful range of the carbon arc which is used as an intensity standard in the visible and near ultraviolet. A comparison of the two sources yields a compatibility within the experimental errors of a few percent.  相似文献

The detection of X-rays from Nova Muscae 1983 (discovered on January 18, 1983) constitutes the first detection of X-rays from a classical nova during outburst. X-ray observations were carried out on 1984 April 20 and July 14 when Nova Mus had entered the nebular stage. During both observations no significant flux was observed with the medium energy detectors (2–50 keV). The source was detected with the low energy detector (.04–2 keV) using 3000 Å Lexan and Parlene- N-Aluminium filters; counting rates of (3.4 ± 1.2) × 103 and (3.7 ± 1.2 × 10-3 counts/sec were measured with the respective filters. The source was detected again on July 14 with about the same intensity. Either a shocked shell of circumstellar gas emitting 107 thermal bremsstrahlung at 1035 erg/sec intensity or a white dwarf remnant emitting 3.5 × 105 blackbody radiation at 1037 erg/sec luminosity are compatible with the measurements.Spectra taken in the visual spectral range show strong forbidden coronal emission lines of [FeVII] 6085, [FeX] 6374, and as never observed before in such a strength, [FeXIV] 5303 requiring excitation temperatures of 2 × 106 °K.  相似文献

The solar upper atmosphere (SUA) is defined as the volume above the photosphere occupied by plasmas with electron temperatures, T e, above 2×104 K. Until the Skylab era, only little was known about the morphology of the SUA, while the quality of the spectroscopic observations was continually improving. A spherically symmetric atmosphere was assumed at that time, in which the temperature increased with height. With advances in the observational techniques, it became apparent that the morphology of the SUA was very complex even during the minimum of the magnetic activity cycle. In particular, spectroscopic measurements with high spectral and spatial resolution, which were made in the light of ultraviolet emission lines representing a variety of temperatures, led to the conclusion that most of the radiation from the solar transition region could not be explained by assuming a continuous chromosphere-corona interface, but rather by a region of unresolved fine structures. Recent observational results obtained by modern instruments, such as the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT), the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO), and the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of (SUMER) spectrograph on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), as well as the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE), and their interpretations will be presented in this review of our understanding of the morphology of the SUA.  相似文献

We discuss the importance of the spectral range from about 80 to 800 Å for determining physical conditions in different regions of the solar atmosphere. We give examples of line ratios that may be used to determine electron densities in quiet Sun regions, active regions, and flares. We discuss the possibility of determining electron temperatures from line ratios in the EUV.We show that profiles as well as intensities of spectral lines must be obtained for a proper interpretation of the spectra. We give approximate parameters for a solar grazing incidence spectrograph suitable for the study of the 80–800 Å wavelength region.Given as an invited review paper at the EGAS Meeting in Munich, Germany, 11–14 July 1978.  相似文献

Sampling observations of a complete 35d cycle of Her X-1 during 1 March to 5 April 1984 with the low and medium energy X-ray detectors of EXOSAT are presented. The intensities measured in the Argon detectors are compared with the UHURU 35d light curve to obtain the turn-on times of two consecutive cycles as JD 2445753.0 ± 1.0, and JD 2445788.0 ± 0.5. The low energy data is used to determine the rotation period and its derivative as: 1.23779200 s ± 50 ns, and (-2 ± 1) × 10-13 respectively, at the epoch JD 2445778.56. Analysis of the pulse arrival phases indicate that during mid-on phase of the 35d cycle there is shift of about 180°. Evidence for the long term correlated changes of P35 and P1.24s is presented, confirming the low quality of the 35d clock and suggesting that the basic clock mechanism must lie in the disk structure itself.  相似文献

In view of the low H2O abundance in the present Venusian and Martian atmospheres several observations by spacecraft and studies suggest that both planets should have lost most of their water over the early active period of the young Sun. During the first Gyr after the Sun arrived at the Zero- Age-Main-Sequence high X-ray and EUV fluxes between 10 and 100 times that of the present Sun were responsible for much higher temperatures in the thermosphere-exosphere environments on both planets. By applying a diffusive-gravitational equilibrium and thermal balance model for investigating radiation impact on the early thermospheres by photodissociation and ionization processes, due to exothermic chemical reactions and cooling by CO2 IR emission in the 15μm band we found expanded thermospheres with exobase levels between about 200 km (present) and 2000 km (4.5 Gyr ago). The higher temperatures in the upper atmospheres of both planets could reach “blow-off” conditions for H atoms even at high CO2 mixing ratios of 96%. Lower CO2/N2 mixing ratio or higher contents of H2O vapor in the early atmospheres could have had a dramatic impact from the loss of atmosphere and water on both planets. The duration of this phase of high thermal loss rates essentially depended on the mixing ratios of CO2, N2, and H2O in the early atmospheres and could have lasted between about 150 and several hundred Myr.  相似文献

A new scenario of substorm growth phase, onset and dipolarization during expansion phase and the corresponding physical processes are presented. During the growth phase, as a result of enhanced plasma convection, the plasma pressure and its gradient continue to be enhanced over the quiet-time values in the plasma sheet. Toward the late growth phase, a strong cross-tail current sheet is formed in the near-Earth plasma sheet region, where a local magnetic well is formed. The equatorial plasma beta (β eq ) can reach a local maximum with value larger than 50 and the cross-tail current density can be enhanced to over 10nA/m2 as obtained from 3D quasi-static magnetospheric equilibrium solutions for the growth phase. The most unstable kinetic ballooning instabilities (KBI) are expected to be located in the tailward side of the strong cross-tail current sheet region. The field lines in the most unstable KBI region map to the transition region between the region-l and region-2 currents in the ionosphere, which is consistent with the observed initial brightening location of the breakup arc in the intense proton precipitation region. The KBI explains the AMPTE/CCE observations that a low frequency instability with a wave period of 50–75 seconds is excited about 2–3 min prior to substorm onset and grows exponentially to a large amplitude at the onset of current disruption (or current reduction). At the onset of current disruption higher frequency instabilities are excited so that the plasma and electromagnetic field fluctuations form a strong turbulent state. Plasma transport takes place due to the strong turbulence to relax the ambient plasma pressure profile so that the plasma pressure and current density are reduced and the ambient magnetic field intensity increases by more than a factor of 2–3 in the high-β eq region and the field line geometry recovers from tail-like to dipole-like – dipolarization.  相似文献

The fundamental properties of 24 Galactic WN stars are determined from analyses of their optical, UV and IR spectra using sophisticated model atmosphere codes (Hillier, 1987, 1990). Terminal velocities, stellar luminosities, temperatures, mass loss rates and abundances of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are determined. Stellar parameters are derived using diagnostic lines and interstellar reddenings found from fitting theoretical continua to observed energy distributions. Our results confirm that the parameters of WN stars span a large range in temperature (T*=30–90,000 K), luminosity (log L*/L=4.8–5.9), mass loss (M=0.9–12×10–5 M yr–1) and terminal velocity (v =630–3300 km s–1). Hydrogen abundances are determined, and found to be low in WNEw and WNEs stars (<15% by mass) and considerable in most WNL stars (1–50%). Metal abundances are also determined with the nitrogen content found to lie in the range N/He=1–5×10–3 (by number) for all subtypes, and C/N 0.02 in broad agreement with the predictions of Maeder (1991). Enhanced O/N and O/C is found for HD 104994 (WN3p) suggesting a peculiar evolutionary history. Our results suggest that single WNL+abs stars may represent an evolutionary stage immediately after the Of phase. Since some WNE stars exist with non-negligible hydrogen contents (e.g. WR136) evolution may proceed directly from WNL+abs to WNE in some cases, circumventing the luminous blue variable (LBV) or red supergiant (RSG) stage.  相似文献

The historical evolution of the study of escape of light gases from planetary atmospheres is delineated, and the application of kinetic theory to the ionsphere is discussed. Ionospheric plasma becomes collisionless above the ion-exobase which is located near 1000 km altitude in the trough and polar regions, and which coincides with the plasmapause at lower latitudes. When the boundary conditions at conjugate points of a closed magnetic field line are different, interhemispheric particle fluxes exist from the high temperature point to the low temperature point, and from the point of larger concentrations to the point of smaller concentrations; therefore the charge separation electric field in the exosphere is no longer given by the Pannekoek-Rosseland field. For non-uniform number densities and temperatures at the exobase, the observed r –4 variation of the equatorial density distribution is recovered in the calculated density distributions. Taking account of plasmasheet particle precipitation does not change very much the electric field and ionospheric ion distributions, at least for reasonable densities and temperatures of the plasmasheet electrons and protons. For field aligned current densities along auroral field lines smaller than 10–5 Am–2, the potential difference between the ion-exobase and plasmasheet is about –3V. In the case of open magnetic field lines the flow speed of hydrogen and helium ions in the exosphere becomes rapidly supersonic as a consequence of the upward directed charge separation electric field, whereas the oxygen ions have a negligible small bulk velocity. Adding a photoelectron efflux decreases the thermal electron escape but does not change significantly the number density distributions.  相似文献

Solar gamma rays
The theory of gamma-ray production in solar flares is treated in detail. Both lines and continuum are produced. The strongest line predicted at 2.225 MeV with a width of less than 100 eV and detected at 2.24±0.02 MeV, is due to neutron capture by protons in the photosphere. Its intensity is dependent on the photospheric 3He abundance. The neutrons are produced in nuclear reactions of flare accelerated particles which also produce positrons and prompt nuclear deexcitation lines. The strongest prompt lines are at 4.43 MeV from 12C and at 6.2 from 16O and 15N. These lines result from both direct excitation and spallation. The widths of individual prompt lines are determined by nuclear kinematics. The width of the 4.43 MeV line is 100 keV and that of the 6.2 MeV feature is 300 keV. Both these lines have been observed from a solar flare. Other potentially observable lines are predicted at 0.845 and 1.24 MeV from 56Fe, at 1.63 MeV principally from 14N and 20Ne, at 1.78 MeV from 28Si, at 5.3 MeV from 15O and 15N, and at 7.12 MeV from 16O. The widths of the iron lines are only a few keV, while those of the other lines are about 100 keV. The only other observed line is at 0.511 MeV from positron annihilation. The width of this line is determined by the temperature, and its temporal variation depends on the density of the ambient medium in the annihilation region. Positrons can also annihilate from the 3 S state of positronium to produce a 3-photon continuum below 0.511 MeV. In addition, the lines of 7Li and 7Be at 0.478 keV and 0.431 keV, which have kinematical widths of 30 keV, blend into a strong feature just below the 0.511 MeV line. From the comparison of the observed and calculated intensities of the line at 4.4 MeV to that of the 2.2 MeV line it is possible to obtain information on the spectrum of accelerated nuclei in flares. Moreover, from the absolute intensities of these lines the total number of accelerated nuclei at the Sun and their heating of the flare region can be estimated. We find that about 1033 protons of energies greater than 30 MeV were produced in the 1972, August 4 flare. The gamma-ray continuum, produced by electron bremsstrahlung, allows the determination of the spectrum and number of accelerated electrons in the MeV region. From the comparison of the line and continuum intensities we find a proton-to-electron ratio of about 10 to 102 at the same energy for the 1972, August 4 flare. For the same flare the protons above 2.5 MeV which are responsible for the gamma-ray emission produce a few percent of the heat generated by the electrons which make the hard X-rays above 20 keV.NAS-NRC Resident Research Associate.Research supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant GP 31620.  相似文献

An experimental Fairchild CCD-211 was placed in the 2. 1-m coudé spectrograph at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and used to record an 87 Å spectral band centered on Ha. On the night of 1979 July 11 UT date, this system was used to observe continuously the extreme Cephei variable BW Vulpeculae throughout one of its 4h 49m cycles with an average exposure of 13 minutes per observation. A total of 18 observations was secured. The results show dramatic profile variations of H, including features not previously reported, and extreme variations of the C II 6578, 6582 lines, including variations of equivalent width. The fast time-resolution capability and the photometric linearity of the CCD have permitted the detection of subtle effects that have been missed by photographic observations and has led directly to important new interpretations of the complex atmospheric pulsations in this star, including effects of altered opacity on the formation of spectral lines and the suggestion of a helium-ionization heat engine as a mechanism for driving atmospheric pulsations.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Photoelectric WBVR observations of Be star HDE 245770=V 725 Tau, the optical counterpart of the transient X-ray pulsar A0535+26, having a pulse period of about 104 s, were conducted for more than 10 years. An irregular long-term optical variability of the star with amplitudes of the order of a few tenths of magnitude was found to be a usual phenomenon. In some cases rapid changes of the star's optical luminosity with a characteristic period of a few tens of minutes or a few hours, and an amplitude of several hundredths of magnitude in all the spectral bands used, which have practically coincided or correlated with the X-ray pulsar outbursts detected by X-ray satellites, were observed.Photoelectric recording of the optical flux from HDE 245770 were made in 1981–1982 with a time resolution of 1 second and 10 s, respectively, in theR spectral band (0 7000 Å) and in the narrowH -emission-line band (1/2 75 Å) using a 48-cm reflector of High-Mountain Tien-Shan observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute near Alma-Ata. An analysis of autocorrelation functions of the flux changes from object under study and a comparison with the star BD+26° 876 indicated the variability of luminosity of V 725 Tau in theR spectral band on a time scale of a few tens of second; this variability resembles shot noise with a characteristic time of stochastic bursts of about 15–20 s and their amplitudes of about a few tenths of a percent. InH -emission-line radiation autocorrelation functions and power spectra show quasiperiodic variability of luminosity of HDE 245770 with a characteristic period of about 100–150 s and an amplitude in the neighbour-hood of 0.5%. The latter result is not quite reliable because of not quite fine weather conditions during the observations; independent observations and check-up are required.  相似文献

The instruments on board the Infrared Space Observatory have for the first time allowed a complete low (PHOT, CVF) to medium resolution (SWS) spectroscopic harvest, from 2.5 to 45 μm, of interstellar dust. Amongst the detected solids present in starless molecular clouds surrounding recently born stellar and still embedded objects or products of the chemistry in some mass loss envelopes, the so-called “ice mantles” are of specific interest. They represent an interface between the very refractory carbonaceous and silicates materials that built the first grains with the rich chemistry taking place in the gas phase. Molecules condense, react on ices, are subjected to UV and cosmic ray irradiation at low temperatures, participating efficiently to the evolution toward more complex molecules, being in constant interaction in an ice layer. They also play an important role in the radiative transfer of molecular clouds and strongly affect the gas phase chemistry. ISO results shed light on many other species than H2O ice. The detection of these van der Waal's solids is mainly performed in absorption. Each ice feature observed by ISO spectrometer is an important species, with abundance in the 10−4–10−7 range with respect to H2. Such high abundances represent a substantial reservoir of matter that, once released later on, replenishes the gas phase and feeds the ladder of molecular complexity. Medium resolution spectroscopy also offers the opportunity to look at individual line profiles of the ice features, and therefore to progressively reveal the interactions taking place in the mantles. This article will give a view on selected results to avoid to overlap with the numerous reviews the reader is invited to consult (e.g. van Dishoeck, in press; Gibb et al., 2004.). Based on observations with ISO, an ESA project with instruments funded by ESA Member States (especially the PI countries: France, Germany, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom), and with the participation of ISAS and NASA.  相似文献
