A three-state Kalman tracker is described for tracking a moving target, such as an aircraft, making use of the position and rate measurements obtained by a track-white-scan radar sensor which employs pulsed Doppler processing, such as the moving target detector providing unambiguous Doppler data. The steady-state filter parameters have been analytically obtained under the assumption of white noise maneuver capability. The numerical computations of these parameters are in excellent agreement with those obtained from the recursive Kalman filter matrix equations. The solution for the case when only the range measurements are available is obtained as a special case of this model. Graphs of normalized covariances and gains are presented to illustrate how the solution depends on different parameters

Kalman filtering equations to obtain estimates of velocity from radar position information are defined. In a track-while-scan operation, a three-dimensional radar sensor measures range, bearing, and elevation (r, ?, ?) of an airborne target at uniform sampling intervals of time T. The noisy position measurements are converted to x, y, z coordinates and put through a Kalman filter to obtain x, y, z velocity components. The filtering equations together with steady-state error estimates are given.

Heading and speed errors are analytically determined for noneumavering targets at the output of an x, y tracking filter which processes range and bearing measurements from a radar sensor in a track-while-scan (TWS) operation. These errors are shown to depend upon target range and speed, the angle between the radius and velocity vectors, sensor accuracies, and tracking filter parameters. eters. Depending upon the tracking filter implementation, these errors may also be a function of target bearing.

Radar signal processing is particularly important in tracking closely spaced targets and targets in the presence of sea-surface-induced multipath. Closely spaced targets can produce unresolved measurements when they occupy the same range cell of the radar. These issues are the salient features of the benchmark problem for tracking unresolved targets combined with radar management, for which this paper presents the only complete solution to date. In this paper a modified version of a recently developed maximum likelihood (ML) angle estimator, which can produce two measurements from a single (unresolved) detection, is presented. A modified generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is also described to detect the presence of two unresolved targets. Sea-surface-induced multipath can produce a severe bias in the elevation angle measurement when the conventional monopulse ratio angle extractor method is used. A modified version of a recently developed ML angle extractor, which produces nearly unbiased elevation angle measurements and significantly improves the track accuracy, is presented. Efficient radar resource allocation algorithms for two closely spaced targets and targets flying close to the sea surface are also presented. Finally, the IMMPDAF (interacting multiple model estimator with probabilistic data association filter modules) is used to track these targets. It is found that a two-model IMMPDAF performs better than the three-model version used in the previous benchmark. Also, the IMMPDAF with a coordinated turn model works better than the one using a Wiener process acceleration model. The signal processing and tracking algorithms presented here, operating in a feedback manner, form a comprehensive solution to the most realistic tracking and radar management problem to date.

An implementation is presented of the discrete time extended Kalman filter which the authors have found useful for sensor netting in a variety of tactical radar and ballistic missile defense (BMD) applications. A Potter square root version of the extended Kalman filter is used where vector measurements are processed serially. Both the state and covariance equations are initialized by processing past measurements. The initialization technique and the filter are used in two tactical radar tracking examples.

The conventional approach for tracking system design is to treat the detection and tracking subsystems as completely independent units. However, the two subsystems can be designed jointly to improve system (tracking) performance. It is known that different radar signal waveforms result in very different resolution cell shapes (for example, a rectangle versus an eccentric parallelogram) in the range/range-rate space, and that there are corresponding differences in overall tracking performance. We develop a framework for the analysis of this performance. An imperfect detection process, false alarms, target dynamics, and the matched filter sampling grid are all accounted for, using the Markov chain approach of Li and Bar-Shalom. The role of the grid is stressed, and it is seen that the measurement-extraction process from contiguous radar "hits" is very important. A number of conclusions are given, perhaps the most interesting of which is the corroboration in the new measurement space of Fitzgerald's result for delay-only (i.e., range) measurements, that a linear FM upsweep offers very good tracking performance

A filter was developed for maintaining track on ballistic missiles whose drag profiles are unknown or deviate significantly from prior predictions. The filter employs an innovative form of a seven-state Kalman filter in which object drag is included as a state to be estimated. Using measurements of range, azimuth, and elevation, the filter can track endo- and exo-atmospheric targets on a wide variety of trajectories without requiring a priori tuning to account for variations in reentry angle, drag history, measurement signal-to-noise ratio, etc. The filter was designed to be implemented at the millimeter wave (MMW) radar (a high-range-resolution, narrow beamwidth, Ka-band radar) located at Kwajalein Missile Range (KMR) in the Marshall Islands. Extensive testing and comparisons using a high fidelity simulation showed the new filter to be robust to a wide variety of trajectories and substantially better than track filters presently used at KMR. The filter was coded to run efficiently in real time, installed at the MMW radar, and successfully used to track an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with varying drag characteristics through exo-atmospheric and reentry phases. The filter yielded a more accurate and responsive track than possible with the previously used filter on a similar trajectory

This paper studies the application of Kalman filtering to single-target track systems in airborne radar. An angle channel Kalman filter is configured which incorporates measures of range, range rate, and on-board dynamics. Theoretical performance results are given and a discussion of methods for reducing the complexity of the Kalman gain computation is presented. A suboptimal antenna controller which operates on the outputs of the angle Kalman filter is also described. In addition, methodological improvements are shown to exist in the design of range and range-rate trackers using the Kalman filter configuration.

PDAF with multiple clutter regions and target models
This paper presents the theory of a new multiple model probabilistic data association filter (PDAF). The analysis is generalized for the case of multiple nonuniform clutter regions within the measurement data that updates each model of the filter. To reduce the possibility of clutter measurements forming established tracks, the solution includes a model for a visible target. That is, a target that gives sensor measurements that satisfy one of the target models. Other features included in the algorithm are the selection of a fixed number of nearest measurements and the addition of signal amplitude to the target state vector. The nonuniform clutter model developed here is applicable to tracking signal amplitude. Performance of this algorithm is illustrated using experimentally recorded over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) data.

The extended Kalman filter (EKF) has been widely used as a nonlinear filtering method for radar tracking problems. However, it has been found that if cross-range measurement errors of the target position are large, the performance of the conventional EKF degrades considerably due to nonnegligible nonlinear effects. A new filtering algorithm for improving the tracking performance with radar measurements is developed based on the fact that correct evaluation of the measurement error covariance is possible in the Cartesian coordinate system. The proposed algorithm may be viewed as a modification of the EKF in which the variance of the range measurement errors is evaluated in an adaptive manner. The filter structure facilitates the incorporation of the sequential measurement processing scheme, and this makes the resulting algorithm favorable to both estimation accuracy and computational efficiency. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method offers superior performance in comparison to previous methods. Moreover, our developed algorithm provides some useful insight into the radar tracking problem

An Exact Trajectory Solution from Doppler Shift Measurements
Three radar Doppler shift measurements are sufficient to determine the range and velocity, and the angle between them, of a target in uniform rectilinear motion. A solution using derivative approximations has recently appeared. An exact solution in terms of the original measurements is presented here.

The use of magnetic heading and true air speed measurements made on board civil airplanes to assist in radar tracking is described. The data are telemetered via the air-ground data link of the mode S radar system. A new filter, similar to the first-order Kalman filter, is developed using velocity measurements to bias its prediction equations. This filter follows satisfactorily maneuvers, and estimates, in real time, the wind in the vicinity of the airplane. Finally a scheme is described to remove false data due to data-link corruption.

Sequential nonlinear tracking using UKF and raw range-rate measurements
The three-dimensional (3D) converted measurements filtering (CMF) with both converted position and raw range-rate measurement is proposed to solve the Doppler radar target tracking, where the error between radar-target range and range rate are correlated. Firstly, not using pseudomeasurement constructed by product of range and range rate to reduce the high nonlinearity, the raw range-rate measurements are utilized by unscented Kalman filter (UKF), where the converted errors of the position and the range rate are decorrelated, then linear part (position measurements) and nonlinear part (range-rate measurement) are sequentially processed by Kalman filter (KF) and UKF. Secondly, based on the assumption of small measurement error, the mean and covariance of converted measurement errors are derived by second-order Taylor series expansion. Finally, the influence of the correlated coefficient rho between the range and range rate, and the range-rate noise deviation sigmar are taken into account and extreme values of rho and sigmar are used in Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that the proposed method is, in a sense, effective and practical

A technique is presented for maximizing the percentage of usable Doppler bandwidth throughout which a radar return can be detected while maintaining an acceptable clutter suppression. The technique employs the weighted Chebyshev approximation to the design of a transversal high-pass digital filter which has an optimal passband ripple for a given number of filter weights and associated integration gain consistent with the required increase in signal-to-noise ratio needed for acceptable probabilities of detection and false alarm. Conventional approaches to the design of a movingtarget arget indictor (MTI) filter which maximizes the improvement factor by clutter suppression typically improve the signal-to-background noise ratio over less than 50 percent of the range between dc and the pulse-repetition frequency fT. This technique can increase the usable bandwidth to 80 percent or more of fT. Two examples are included which utilize parameter values from the Army Missile Command's experimental radar and demonstrate the interactive influence of such filter parameters as the number of weights, passband ripple and bandedge, and stopband attenuation and cutoff.

The potential for identifying aircraft using one or more radar range profiles, in conjunction with a correlator, is investigated. Two types of filter which maximize the expected value of certain correlation peaks are described. The effectiveness of one type of filter was investigated in identification experiments using an extensive data set of real radar range profiles of 24 different aircraft. The results suggest that reliable identification is possible provided aircraft aspect information is used and identifications are based on multiple profiles

Uniform coherent pulse trains offer a practical solution to the problem of designing a radar signal possessing both high range and range-rate resolution. The Doppler sensitivity provides some rejection of off-Doppler (clutter) returns in the matched filter receiver. This paper considers the use of a processor in which members of the received pulse train are selectively weighted in amplitude and phase to improve clutter suppression. The techniques described are particularly suitable for rejecting interference entering the processor through ambiguous responses (range sidelobes) of the signal. The complex weights which are derived are optimum in the sense that they produce the maximum clutter suppression for a given detection efficiency. In determining these weights, it is assumed that the distribution of clutter in range and range rate relative to targets of interest is known. Thus, clutter suppression is achieved by reducing the sidelobe levels in specified regions of the receiver response. These techniques are directly applicable to array antennas; the analogous antenna problem would be to reduce sidelobe levels in a particular sector while preserving gain. Complex weighting is most successful when the clutter is limited in both range and velocity.

Multistatic adaptive pulse compression
A new technique denoted as multistatic adaptive pulse compression (MAPC) is introduced which exploits recent work on adaptive pulse compression (APC) in order to jointly separate and pulse compress the concurrently received return signals from K proximate multistatic radars operating (i.e., transmitting) within the same spectrum. For the return signal from a single pulse of a monostatic radar, APC estimates the particular receive filter for a given range cell in a Bayesian sense reiteratively by employing the matched filter estimates of the surrounding range cell values as a priori knowledge in order to place temporal (i.e., range) nulls at the relative ranges occupied by large targets and thereby suppress range sidelobes to the level of the noise. The MAPC approach generalizes the APC concept by jointly estimating the particular receive filter for each range cell associated with each of several concurrently-received radar return signals occupying the same spectrum. As such, MAPC is found to enable shared-spectrum multistatic operation and is shown to yield substantial performance improvement in the presence of multiple spectrum-sharing radars as compared with both standard matched filters and standard least-squares mismatched filters

A digital simulation of coherent synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of three-dimensional objects is described. The simulation is intended to produce representative SAR images that would be suitable for image analysis and pattern recognition studies. The procedure involves a modeling of the object using a combination of three-dimensional quadratic shapes yielding a smooth surface representation. The radar images of these models are then computed using physical optics scattering theory. Finite resolution both in range and cross-range direction is incorporated via a theoretical analysis which results in a simple Fourier transform representation of an equivalent "offset" window filter. Examples of the computer simulation for both infinite resolution and blurred or finite resolution are given for a KC-135 aircraft model.
