Solar gamma rays     
The theory of gamma-ray production in solar flares is treated in detail. Both lines and continuum are produced. The strongest line predicted at 2.225 MeV with a width of less than 100 eV and detected at 2.24±0.02 MeV, is due to neutron capture by protons in the photosphere. Its intensity is dependent on the photospheric 3He abundance. The neutrons are produced in nuclear reactions of flare accelerated particles which also produce positrons and prompt nuclear deexcitation lines. The strongest prompt lines are at 4.43 MeV from 12C and at 6.2 from 16O and 15N. These lines result from both direct excitation and spallation. The widths of individual prompt lines are determined by nuclear kinematics. The width of the 4.43 MeV line is 100 keV and that of the 6.2 MeV feature is 300 keV. Both these lines have been observed from a solar flare. Other potentially observable lines are predicted at 0.845 and 1.24 MeV from 56Fe, at 1.63 MeV principally from 14N and 20Ne, at 1.78 MeV from 28Si, at 5.3 MeV from 15O and 15N, and at 7.12 MeV from 16O. The widths of the iron lines are only a few keV, while those of the other lines are about 100 keV. The only other observed line is at 0.511 MeV from positron annihilation. The width of this line is determined by the temperature, and its temporal variation depends on the density of the ambient medium in the annihilation region. Positrons can also annihilate from the 3 S state of positronium to produce a 3-photon continuum below 0.511 MeV. In addition, the lines of 7Li and 7Be at 0.478 keV and 0.431 keV, which have kinematical widths of 30 keV, blend into a strong feature just below the 0.511 MeV line.From the comparison of the observed and calculated intensities of the line at 4.4 MeV to that of the 2.2 MeV line it is possible to obtain information on the spectrum of accelerated nuclei in flares. Moreover, from the absolute intensities of these lines the total number of accelerated nuclei at the Sun and their heating of the flare region can be estimated. We find that about 1033 protons of energies greater than 30 MeV were produced in the 1972, August 4 flare.The gamma-ray continuum, produced by electron bremsstrahlung, allows the determination of the spectrum and number of accelerated electrons in the MeV region. From the comparison of the line and continuum intensities we find a proton-to-electron ratio of about 10 to 102 at the same energy for the 1972, August 4 flare. For the same flare the protons above 2.5 MeV which are responsible for the gamma-ray emission produce a few percent of the heat generated by the electrons which make the hard X-rays above 20 keV.NAS-NRC Resident Research Associate.Research supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant GP 31620.  相似文献

NGC 4151 was observed four times in Nov. 83. The results indicate that: a) there exists a correlation between the X-ray and UV fluxes on the long term; b) the soft X-ray excess between 0.1 and 1 keV is probably steeper than expected from the leaky absorber model by Holt et al (1980); c)the spectral fit to the ME data, after correction for a soft component, yields =1,73±0.27, NH=(15.2±2.2)×1022 cm–2, E.W.(Fe line)=0.208±0.084 keV, and does not require a strong overabundance of Fe in the absorber. The relationship between NH and the strength of the broad emission lines is commented.  相似文献

The solar wind charge state and elemental compositions have been measured with the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometers (SWICS) on Ulysses and ACE for a combined period of about 25 years. This most extensive data set includes all varieties of solar wind flows and extends over more than one solar cycle. With SWICS the abundances of all charge states of He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar and Fe can be reliably determined (when averaged over sufficiently long time periods) under any solar wind flow conditions. Here we report on results of our detailed analysis of the elemental composition and ionization states of the most unbiased solar wind from the polar coronal holes during solar minimum in 1994–1996, which includes new values for the abundance S, Ca and Ar and a more accurate determination of the 20Ne abundance. We find that in the solar minimum polar coronal hole solar wind the average freezing-in temperature is ∼1.1×106 K, increasing slightly with the mass of the ion. Using an extrapolation method we derive photospheric abundances from solar wind composition measurements. We suggest that our solar-wind-derived values should be used for the photospheric ratios of Ne/Fe=1.26±0.28 and Ar/Fe=0.030±0.007.  相似文献

为研究杂质Fe元素对2219铝合金及其焊接接头的组织、性能以及电化学腐蚀性能等的影响,采用力学拉伸、焊接试验以及金相和扫描电镜等分析测试方法,对0.15%(w)至0.01%(w)等不同Fe元素含量的2219铝合金锻件进行实验研究和分析。研究表明:2219铝合金中经热变形加工存在网络状Al_2Cu变成颗粒状和纤维状的Al_7Cu_2(Fe,Mn)相,随着Fe含量由0.15%(w)降低至0.01%(w),合金固溶时效后的Al_7Cu_2(Fe,Mn)相显著减少,锻件强度和塑性显著提高;合金焊接接头断口由脆性断裂逐渐转变为韧窝尺寸细小的韧性断裂,尤其对于延伸率,提高至近1.4倍,强度和塑性显著提高;合金的自腐蚀电流逐渐减小,单位面积上的线性极化电阻增大,合金焊接接头的耐腐蚀性能显著提高。  相似文献

Observations indicating the presence of stellar chromospheres, that is hot envelopes around stars are summarized. Undisputed indicators (called type I) for hot stellar envelopes are spectral lines of highly ionized atoms, Fe ii emission lines and flares in late type stars and the presence of the He i10830 Å line. Whether indicators (called type II) like emission cores in the Ca ii H and K and Mg ii h and k lines or mass loss signify the presence of stellar chromospheres is still somewhat debated, although the discussion points in favour of the usefulness of these indicators. The combined evidence to date shows that all non degenerate type stars have chromospheres except possibly the A stars. There are however theoretical reasons for expecting chromospheres in A stars. Empirical chromosphere models for a rapidly growing sample of stars have recently been constructed on the basis of Ca ii and Mg ii line observations. A discussion of possible heating mechanisms is given and the relative importance of these mechanisms is evaluated. For the low and middle chromosphere the short period acoustic heating mechanism seems to be the dominant process although there are still uncertainties. Both steady state and time dependent theoretical models of stellar chromospheres, based on the short period acoustic heating theory, are discussed, and predictions of these models are compared with results from empirical models. This relatively favourable comparison shows that the explanation of the Wilson-Bappu effect might be at hand.  相似文献

Although the elemental composition in all parts of the solar photosphere appears to be the same this is clearly not the case with the solar upper atmosphere (SUA). Spectroscopic studies show that in the corona elemental composition along solar equatorial regions is usually different from polar regions; composition in quiet Sun regions is often different from coronal hole and active region compositions and the transition region composition is frequently different from the coronal composition along the same line of sight. In the following two issues are discussed. The first involves abundance ratios between the high-FIP O and Ne and the low-FIP Mg and Fe that are important for meaningful comparisons between photospheric and SUA compositions and the second involves a review of composition and time variability of SUA plasmas at heights of 1.0≤h≤1.5R .  相似文献

In this paper we present new results from the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometers and the IUE spacecraft on V356 Sgr and β Lyr. The V356 Sgr observations cover, in detail, two eclipses and include one IUE high dispersion SWP image. During both eclipses the total strength of the UV emission lines were found to be invariant. Also, an uneclipsed UV continuum was detected at wavelengths shorter than 1600 Å. The IUE high dispersion SWP spectrum revealed that the emission lines are extremely broad, almost symmetrical lines with weak, slightly blue shifted absorption components. No evidence of carbon is seen in the emission or absorption spectrum of V356 Sgr in eclipse. A model for the origin of the circumstellar matter in this binary system is presented. The Voyager ultraviolet observations of β Lyr show a strong far-UV continuum that is detectable down to 912 Å The far-UV continuum flux level was variable on time scales shorter than the orbital period and displayed no obvious orbital modulation or eclipses. The spectral shape of the far-UV continuum closely resembles that of a UX UMa type cataclysmic variable. On 16 August 1985 an rapid brightening of the far-UV continuum was observed which was also reminiscent of cataclysmic variables. Analysis of the β Lyr data suggest that the central object must be small, with a radius on the order of 1 R or less.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray isotope observations from NASAs Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) mission have been used to investigate the composition of cosmic-ray source material. Source abundances relative to 56Fe are reported for eleven isotopes of Ca, Fe, Co, and Ni, including the very rare isotopes 48Ca and 64Ni. Although the source abundances range over a factor 104, most of the ratios to 56Fe are consistent with solar-system values to within 20%. However, there are some notable differences, the most significant being an excess of (70±30)% relative to the solar system for the cosmic-ray source ratio 58Fe/56Fe. The possible association of such an excess with a contribution to the cosmic-ray source from Wolf–Rayet star ejecta is discussed.  相似文献

The present state of knowledge of the spectrum of the sun from 3000 Å to 170 Å is critically reviewed. The characteristics of the different photographic and photoelectric spectroscopic instruments and the results are summarized and compared. Topics covered are line identifications, intensities, the continuum and its origin, the sun's surface in Lyman alpha, the profiles of H and K of Mg II, Lyman alpha and beta, and monitoring work conducted from rockets and satellites, including OSO-I.  相似文献

Solar energetic particles (SEPs) provide a sample of the Sun from which solar composition may be determined. Using high-resolution measurements from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS) onboard NASA’s Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft, we have studied the isotopic composition of SEPs at energies ≥20 MeV/nucleon in large SEP events. We present SEP isotope measurements of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni made in 49 large events from late 1997 to the present. The isotopic composition is highly variable from one SEP event to another due to variations in seed particle composition or due to mass fractionation that occurs during the acceleration and/or transport of these particles. We show that various isotopic and elemental enhancements are correlated with each other, discuss the empirical corrections used to account for the compositional variability, and obtain estimated solar isotopic abundances. We compare the solar values and their uncertainties inferred from SEPs with solar wind and other solar system abundances and find generally good agreement.  相似文献

Solar UV observations reveal a redshifted emission at transition region temperatures, commonly interpreted as a net downflow of plasma. In earlier investigations the magnitude of the redshift has been found to increase with temperature, reaching a maximum at T=105 K, and then to decrease towards higher temperatures. These observations, mostly from Skylab, suggested no significant shift of the O V line at 1218 Å formed at 2.4×105 K. The variation of the downflow velocity with temperature is, however, uncertain since there are few reliable observations of lines formed at higher temperatures.Using spectrograms from the High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph — HRTS we find an average net redshift of the O V lines at 1218 Å and 1371 Å at all locations extending from disk center to solar limb. A discrepancy between the observed flow velocity in the two lines is probably caused by uncertainty in the available laboratory wavelength of the intercombination line at 1218 Å (2s2 1S0-2s2p3P1).The observed shift in O V is compared with corresponding measurements of lines formed at other temperatures (Si IV, C IV, N IV, O IV, and Fe XII). Large variations in the shift are found along the instrument slit. Thus, blueshifts are also observed with the sites of the largest upflow located in the sunspot umbrae and in a quiet region close to an active region.  相似文献

The Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC) surrounds the Solar System and sets the boundary conditions for the heliosphere. Using both in situ and absorption line data towards ε CMa we are able to constrain both the ionization and the gas phase abundances of the LIC gas at the Solar Location. We find that the abundances are consistent with all of the carbonaceous dust grains having been destroyed, and in fact with a supersolar abundance of C. The constituents of silicate grains, Si, Mg, and Fe, appear to be sub-solar, indicating that silicate dust is present in the LIC. N, O and S are close to the solar values.  相似文献

In the past several years, X-ray observations of the Sun made from rockets and satellites have demonstrated the existence of high temperature (20 × 106 – 100 × 106 K), low density plasmas associated with solar flare phenomena. In the hard X-ray range ( < 1 ), spectra of the flaring plasma have been obtained using proportional and scintillation counter detectors. It is possible from these data to determine the evolution of the hard X-ray flare spectrum as the burst progresses; and by assuming either a non-thermal or thermal (Maxwellian) electron distribution function, characteristic plasma parameters such as emission measure and temperature (for a thermal interpretation) can be determined. Thermal interpretations of hard X-ray data require temperatures of 100 × 106 K.In contrast, the soft X-ray flare spectrum (1 <<30 ) exhibits line emission from hydrogen-like and helium-like ions, e.g. Ne, Mg, Al, Si,... Fe, that indicates electron energies more characteristic of temperatures of 20 × 106 K. Furthermore, line intensity ratios obtained during the course of an event show that the flare plasma can only be described satisfactorily by assuming a source composed of several different temperature regions; and that the emission measures and temperatures of these regions appear to change as the flare evolves. Temperatures are determined from line ratios of hydrogen-like to helium-like ions for a number of different elements, e.g., S, Si, and Mg, and from the slope of the X-ray continuum which is assumed to be due to free-free and free-bound emission. There is no obvious indication in soft X-ray flare spectra of non-thermal processes, although accurate continuum measurements are difficult with the data obtained to date because of higher order diffraction effects due to the use of crystal spectrometers.Soft X-ray flare spectra also show satellite lines of the hydrogen-like and helium-like ions, notably the 1s 22s 2 S-1s2s2p 2 P transition of the lithium-like ion, and support the contention that in low density plasmas these lines are formed by dielectronic recombination to the helium-like ion. Also, series of allowed transitions of hydrogen-like and helium-like ions are strong, e.g., the Lyman series of S up to Lyman-, and ratios of the higher member lines to the Lyman- line can be compared with theoretical calculations of the relative line strengths obtained by assuming various processes of line formation.This review will discuss the X-ray spectrum of solar flares from 250 keV to 0.4 keV, but will be primarily concerned with the soft X-ray spectrum and the interpretation of emission lines and continuum features that lie in this spectral range.  相似文献

NASA’s MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) mission will further the understanding of the formation of the planets by examining the least studied of the terrestrial planets, Mercury. During the one-year orbital phase (beginning in 2011) and three earlier flybys (2008 and 2009), the X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) onboard the MESSENGER spacecraft will measure the surface elemental composition. XRS will measure the characteristic X-ray emissions induced on the surface of Mercury by the incident solar flux. The Kα lines for the elements Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Ti, and Fe will be detected. The 12° field-of-view of the instrument will allow a spatial resolution that ranges from 42 km at periapsis to 3200 km at apoapsis due to the spacecraft’s highly elliptical orbit. XRS will provide elemental composition measurements covering the majority of Mercury’s surface, as well as potential high-spatial-resolution measurements of features of interest. 介绍了弹用涡扇发动机气动稳定性计算的基本方法和评定流程。给出了进气畸变、附加功率提取、附加引气、加速过程对弹用涡扇发动机气动稳定性影响的计算分析模型。其中,进气畸变对发动机气动稳定性影响的计算采用平行压气机模型,基于李亚普诺夫理论的方法完成;附加引气、功率提取对发动机气动稳定性的影响采用通过对发动机转子间质量、动量、能量守恒方程进行修正的方法进行;加速过程对发动机气动稳定性的影响采用欧拉方法求解动态的质量、动量、能量守恒方程的方法完成;最后采用“层叠”的方法进行各种降稳因素的综合评估。通过比较可以看出,进气畸变是弹用涡扇发动机主要的降稳因素。  相似文献

We present results of line profile analysis of observations simultaneously performed around the Ca II K and He I (1083 nm) lines, using the Horizontal Spectrograph of the Vacuum Tower Telescope of NSO/SP. From the spectral analysis of a 83 min long sequence of CCD spectra, we derive some dynamical properties of the main components of the quiet chromosphere: i) the magnetic network, ii) the cell interior. We present a whole set of amplitude spectra near 5 and 3 min periods for the two lines; K3 and He I velocity spectra extending up to 100 mHz are also considered, for the first time.  相似文献

Cygnus X-3 was observed with the GSPC on board EXOSAT on several occasions, one observation lasting for 7 orbital cycles. The width W and centroid energy E of the iron emission feature near 6.7 keV show a smooth, correlated, sinusoidal-type modulation, the iron line being widest and E being lowest just before X-ray maximum. The line profile may show a low-energy wing, but apart from this does not deviate strongly from a symmetric, Gaussian-type shape. The continuum at higher energies than the line is not completely smooth, but shows bumps which remain stable in time. Two possible explanations are discussed for the correlated variation of E and W as a function of orbital phase.  相似文献
