We see neutron stars principally by their radio and X-ray emission. Their appearance in these different bands depends on whether the emission comes from the surface or its magnetosphere. New phenomena continue to be found from neutron stars, which makes it an exciting and topical research area. This volume is a collection of the papers from a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Italy in October 1996. Many, and for me the most interesting ones, are substantial reviews on topics such as Pulsar magnetic fields and glitches (M. Ruderman), Radio pulsar population properties (D. Lorimer), Gamma-ray emission from CGRO pulsars (G. Kanbach), Neutron stars and black holes in X-ray binaries (J. van Paradijs), Kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations in low-mass X-ray binaries (M. van der Klis), Thermonuclear burning on rapidly accreting neutron stars (L. Bildsten), On the X-ray emission properties of rotation powered pulsars (W. Becker and J. Truemper). It will serve as a useful reference and source book for students in high energy astrophysics and related fields. The high price may deter its purchase by individuals, but it will be a good volume for a library needing recent coverage on neutron stars. It does not of course include the most recent developments on anomalous X-ray pulsars or magnetars. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Massive stars are crucial building blocks of galaxies and the universe, as production sites of heavy elements and as stirring agents and energy providers through stellar winds and supernovae. The field of magnetic massive stars has seen tremendous progress in recent years. Different perspectives—ranging from direct field measurements over dynamo theory and stellar evolution to colliding winds and the stellar environment—fruitfully combine into a most interesting and still evolving overall picture, which we attempt to review here. Zeeman signatures leave no doubt that at least some O- and early B-type stars have a surface magnetic field. Indirect evidence, especially non-thermal radio emission from colliding winds, suggests many more. The emerging picture for massive stars shows similarities with results from intermediate mass stars, for which much more data are available. Observations are often compatible with a dipole or low order multi-pole field of about 1 kG (O-stars) or 300 G to 30?kG (Ap/Bp stars). Weak and unordered fields have been detected in the O-star ζ Ori A and in Vega, the first normal A-type star with a magnetic field. Theory offers essentially two explanations for the origin of the observed surface fields: fossil fields, particularly for strong and ordered fields, or different dynamo mechanisms, preferentially for less ordered fields. Numerical simulations yield the first concrete stable (fossil) field configuration, but give contradictory results as to whether dynamo action in the radiative envelope of massive main sequence stars is possible. Internal magnetic fields, which may not even show up at the stellar surface, affect stellar evolution as they lead to a more uniform rotation, with more slowly rotating cores and faster surface rotation. Surface metallicities may become enhanced, thus affecting the mass-loss rates.

Evidence on the issues of whether the W Serpentis stars are a coherent class, and how they may interface with the Algol systems, is reviewed, with emphasis on the idea that they are semi-detached systems in the latter part of the rapid phase of mass transfer, with optically and geometrically thick disks of transferred gas around the (now) more massive star. We are interested in what will be seen when the gas clears away, and mainly examine the idea that it will be an Algol-type system. More particularly, consideration is given to centrifugally limited accretion as a mechanism to build up a substantial disk, and the presumed evolutionary sequence is from a W Ser to a rapidly rotating Algol to a normal Algol system. Systems such as V367 Cyg and RW Tau fit into this scheme only with difficulty. Because it is extremely difficult to measure the rotation of some W Ser (mass) primaries, it is natural to look at the rotation statistics of Algols to test this idea. The badly behaved light curves and spectroscopy of some Algols (eg. U Cep, RZ Sct) may be attributable to the double contact condition, and the ramifications of this possibility are discussed. If so, the rotation statistics of Algols should show two spikes, corresponding to the two special conditions into which a system should be driven by tidal braking and centrifugally limited spinup. Present rotation statistics do show these spikes. Algols should flip between these states fairly quickly, depending on the mass transfer rate. Thus, to the extent that the meager statistics can be accepted as meaningful, the new (fourth) morphological type of close binary (double contact) has attained demonstrable reality. The rotation statistics are presented in terms of a particular rotation parameter, R, which is zero for synchronism and unity for the centrifugal limit. Future work should develop rotation statistics to see if the rotational lobe-filling (R = 1) spike persists. It should also look into whether W Ser primaries are on the hydrogen burning main sequence, or in general what they are. We also need more light curves of W Ser type systems, high resolution line profiles for the (mass) primaries (with particular attention to the W Ser-Algol transition cases), and spectroscopy of low inclination W Serpentis systems, such as KX And.

Infrared astronomical measurements are calibrated against reference sources, usually primary standard stars that are, in turn, calibrated either by direct or indirect means. A direct calibration compares the star with a certified source, typically a blackbody. Indirect methods extrapolate a direct measurement of the flux at one wavelength to the flux at another. Historically, α Lyr (Vega) has been used as the primary standard as it is bright, easily accessible from the northern hemisphere, and is well calibrated in the visual. Until recently, the direct absolute infrared calibrations of α Lyr and those derived from the absolute solar flux scaled to the observed spectral energy distributions of solar type stars increasingly diverged with wavelength from those obtained using a model atmosphere to extrapolate the absolute visual flux of Vega into the infrared. The exception is the direct calibration by the 1996/97 Midcourse Space Experiment of the absolute fluxes for a number of the commonly used infrared standard stars, including Vega.In the mid-1980s, the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory began a program that led to the establishment of a network of stars with which to calibrate infrared space-based sensors. α Lyr and a CMa were adopted as the fundamental references and the absolute 1.2 to 35 µm infrared spectral energy distributions for the 616 secondary standard stars in the network were derived through spectral and photometric comparisons with the primary standards. The stars are also used for calibration at ground-based infrared observatories. For applications in which the network stars may not be bright enough, particularly at the longer infrared wavelengths, planets and the larger asteroids are used. Planets and asteroids move and rather sophisticated thermal modeling of the bodies is required to predict the disk-integrated brightness at a specific time with reasonable accuracy. The Infrared Space Observatory applied such a sophisticated ‘thermo-physical’ model to the largest asteroids to support calibration of the sensors to a claimed accuracy of within 5%. The AFRL program also created a spectral atlas of the brightest stars in the sky that, although they are variable, may be used for calibration if the large(r) attendant uncertainties are acceptable. This revised version was published online in July 2005 with a corrected cover date.

Among the X-ray/Be systems, A 0535 + 26/HDE 245770 has been noted, since its discovery, for its peculiar features in several respects, in a wide energy range. For this reason and for a series of concomitant favorable causes, this system has been one of the most studied among the massive X-ray binary systems. The most remarkable incident was that its optical identification with an early-type-emission-line star (O9.7IIIe) has led to a deep studies on Be stars and their interactions with neutron stars, which have allowed to discover, without unbiguity, the presence of optical indicators of consequent X-ray flares, as well as that Be stars in X-ray/Be systems behave just as normal Be stars. Overmore, thanks to the multifrequency coordinated observations of this system, the X-ray emissions from binary companion of the Be stars are best explained by assuming the presence of a thick equatorial disk with low expansion velocity and a thin polar region with high expansion velocity. This picture reconciled the strong discrepancy in mass loss rate evaluations coming from IR and from UV measurements, assuming that the observed regions are enterely distinct from each other, one being a high-density, low-velocity region, and the other being a low-density, very hot, rapidly-expanding disk-like zone.Since, this picture seems to be the best up-to-date frame to cuckold all the experimental panorama available on X-ray/Be systems, we would like to paint in this paper the multifrequency behaviour of A 0535 + 26/HDE 245770, which is the best studied among such systems, in order to stimulate future coordinated experimental-theoretical works on this very interesting class of objects.

The boron 2500 spectral region has been observed with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in a new set of metal-poor stars and analyzed by spectrum synthesis technique, adopting the most recent model atmospheres. By taking into account the Li and Be abundances available from the literature for this same set of objects, the resulting patterns of their light elements abundances cannot be easily justified with the currently known stellar structure scenarios. The finding of real differences in the B content between stars with very similar stellar characteristics suggest that also production effects, rather than depletion and/or mixing only, should be taken into account as a possible and valuable explanation.

We review the evidence for electron acceleration in the heliosphere putting emphasis on the acceleration processes. There are essentially four classes of such processes: shock acceleration, reconnection, wave particle interaction, and direct acceleration by electric fields. We believe that only shock and electric field acceleration can in principle accelerate electrons to very high energies. The shocks known in the heliosphere are coronal shocks, traveling interplanetary shocks, CME shocks related to solar type II radio bursts, planetary bow shocks, and the termination shock of the heliosphere. Even in shocks the acceleration of electrons requires the action of wave particle resonances of which beam driven whistlers are the most probable. Other mechanisms of acceleration make use of current driven instabilities which lead to electron and ion hole formation. In reconnection acceleration is in the current sheet itself where the particles perform Speiser orbits. Otherwise, acceleration takes place in the slow shocks which are generated in the reconnection process and emanate from the diffusion region in the Petschek reconnection model and its variants. Electric field acceleration is found in the auroral zones of the planetary magnetospheres and may also exist on the sun and other stars including neutron stars. The electric potentials are caused by field aligned currents and are concentrated in narrow double layers which physically are phase space holes in the ion and electron distributions. Many of them add up to a large scale electric field in which the electrons may be impulsively accelerated to high energies and heated to large temperatures.

Progress in determining rotation rates of Algol primary stars from light curves is assessed. Included are elementary ideas on why the new method works, how to carry out solutions, and how and when to apply the constraint on rotational lobe filling. Some comments are made on desirable improvements for measuring rotation from line broadening. A few remarks are made about the problem of identifying likely fast rotating Algols.

One of the most powerful tests of the stellar evolution theory is analysis of stars' atmospheric chemical composition. It has shown that some non-standard mixing different from ordinary convection, semiconvection and convective overshooting seems to occur in stellar interiors. In the present study Zahn's rotationally induced turbulent diffusion is assumed to be responsible for such kind of mixing. We compare results of our evolutionary calculations with available observational data for massive main-sequence stars and red giants in globular clusters.

We analyze the properties of the SMC cluster NGC 330 on the basis of a new CMD and of published effective temperatures and bolometric magnitudes for a smaller sample of stars (Caloi et al 1993, Stothers & Chin 1992a,b) to check for the kind of mixing taking place in massive stars. The existence of a few stars in the so-called HR gap led Stothers & Chin (1993) to claim that only models with semiconvective mixing and OPAL could match the HR diagram, whereas induced Caloi et al (1993) to conclude that neither semiconvective nor overshoot models are suited. The careful analysis of this cluster with new stellar models indicates that 1) models with convective overshoot and models with semiconvection can both explain the gross features of the HR diagram, 2) models with overshoot ought to be preferred.

The Be stars
Classical Be stars are defined and their relationship to normal B-type stars stated. Spectral classification of the underlying stars suggests that, on the average, Be stars are located 0.5–1.0 magnitude above the main sequence. Struve's rotational model for Be stars, and several tests which support the model, are reviewed. The best evidence at this time suggests that Be stars may not rotate with the critical velocity at which centrifugal force just balances the equatorial gravitational force, but a number of mechanisms for getting material out into the shell have been proposed and are discussed. The physical characteristics of Be shells were first derived from optical observations of shell stars, supplemented more recently by ultraviolet, infrared, radio, and polarization measurements. These data suggest that Be shells are probably lenticular with radii 3 to 20 times the radius of the underlying star, excitation temperatures lower than those of the reversing layers, and electron densities in the range 1010-1013 cm-3.Variability of Be stars, from spectroscopic, photometric, and polarimetric observations, seems well established over time scales of years and months, but the evidence for night-to-night and hourly changes is somewhat conflicting. Of special interest are recent X-ray observations of several Be stars.Models for the envelopes of Be stars are reviewed, including state-state stellar wind models, time-dependent stellar wind models, the elliptical ring model, disk models, and binary models. Finally, the evolutionary status of Be stars is discussed, and some recommendations for future work made.

We describe work that has recently been completed on deriving the fundamental parameters of eight WR stars through the photoionization modelling of their surrounding nebulae using non-LTE WR flux distributions. The resulting effective temperatures range from 57 000–71 000 K for the WN4-5 stars and <30 000–42 000 K for the WN6-8 stars. The derived stellar parameters are compared with those obtained from stellar emission line modelling. We find good agreement for the hot early WN stars, indicating that the non-LTE WR flux distributions have essentially the correct shape in the crucial far-UV region. We find lower temperatures for the four cooler late WN stars, particularly for the two WN6 stars. For the nebulae surrounding these stars, we find that the model flux distributions produce too much nebular ionization. We suggest that these discrepancies arise because of the lack of line-blanketing in the WR atmospheres. For the WO1 central star of G2.4+1.4, with strong nebular He II 4686 A emission, we derive a temperature of 105 000 K, somewhat less than previous estimates. The positions of our eight WR stars on the H-R diagram are compared with the evolutionary tracks of Maeder (1990) for solar metallicity. In common with previous workers, we find that our derived luminosities are too low, giving an initial mass range of 25–40 M, below that expected for the majority of WR stars.

Aspects of magnetic activity of late-type stars are reviewed: first, results obtained through the comparison of emissions from various temperature regimes in the outer atmospheres of cool stars, then results from stellar soft X-ray spectroscopy. Spectra obtained with different instruments (Imaging Proportional Counter and Solid State Spectrometer onboard the EINSTEIN Satellite, and the Objective Grating Instruments onboard EINSTEIN and EXOSAT) are interpreted through fits with model spectra consisting of one or two temperature components. Particular attention is given to the analysis of EXOSAT spectra of Procyon, Capella, and 2 CrB. Finally various relations between rotation and different measures of activity are compared. The effective X-ray temperature, derived from single-temperature fits to soft X-ray IPC spectra, is shown to play a part in the relation between activity and rotation.

The current status of the theory of a new astrophysical phenomenon, aradiation-driven diskon, is outlined. The cyclotron radiation pressure around sufficiently hot, strongly magnetized white dwarfs and neutron stars is shown to be able to drive a wind from the photosphere and support a plasma envelope in the closed part of the magnetosphere. The magnetohydrostatic configuration of an optically thin, radiatively supported plasma envelope is determined. It consists of an equatorial disk in the region where the cyclotron radiation force exceeds the local force of gravity and a closed shell near the equilibrium surface where the radiation pressure equals gravity. The effects of finite optical depth on the behaviour of the magnetospheric plasma and the influence of the envelope on the observed radiation are discussed.Classes of magnetic degenerate stars are pointed out in which radiation-driven diskons may be found. The best candidates are two individual stars, the strongly magnetized white dwarfs GD 229 and PG 1031+234. Both exhibit broad and deep depressions in the ultraviolet which are explained as a result of cyclotron scattering by an optically thick radiation-driven envelope in the inhomogeneous magnetic field of the star. We predict a temporal and spectral variability of these features due to non-stationary plasma motions in the envelope.
