We present results of line profile analysis of observations simultaneously performed around the Ca II K and He I (1083 nm) lines, using the Horizontal Spectrograph of the Vacuum Tower Telescope of NSO/SP. From the spectral analysis of a 83 min long sequence of CCD spectra, we derive some dynamical properties of the main components of the quiet chromosphere: i) the magnetic network, ii) the cell interior. We present a whole set of amplitude spectra near 5 and 3 min periods for the two lines; K3 and He I velocity spectra extending up to 100 mHz are also considered, for the first time.  相似文献

Ground level events (GLEs) occupy the high-energy end of gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) events. They are associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares, but we still do not clearly understand the special conditions that produce these rare events. During Solar Cycle 23, a total of 16 GLEs were registered, by ground-based neutron monitors. We first ask if these GLEs are clearly distinguishable from other SEP events observed from space. Setting aside possible difficulties in identifying all GLEs consistently, we then try to find observables which may unmistakably isolate these GLEs by studying the basic properties of the associated eruptions and the active regions (ARs) that produced them. It is found that neither the magnitudes of the CMEs and flares nor the complexities of the ARs give sufficient conditions for GLEs. It is possible to find CMEs, flares or ARs that are not associated with GLEs but that have more extreme properties than those associated with GLEs. We also try to evaluate the importance of magnetic field connection of the AR with Earth on the detection of GLEs and their onset times. Using the potential field source surface (PFSS) model, a half of the GLEs are found to be well-connected. However, the GLE onset time with respect to the onset of the associated flare and CME does not strongly depend on how well-connected the AR is. The GLE onset behavior may be largely determined by when and where the CME-driven shock develops. We could not relate the shocks responsible for the onsets of past GLEs with features in solar images, but the combined data from the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) have the potential to change this for GLEs that may occur in the rising phase of Solar Cycle 24.  相似文献

We describe the present status of the project of the Taiwan Oscillation Network (TON) and discuss a scientific result using the TON data. The TON is a ground-based network to measure solar intensity oscillations for the study of the solar interior. Four telescopes have been installed in appropriate longitudes around the world. The TON telescopes take K-line full-disk solar images of diameter 1000 pixels at a rate of one image per minute. The data has been collected since October of 1993. The TON high-spatial-resolution data are specially suitable for the study of local properties of the Sun. In 1997 we developed a new method, acoustic imaging, to construct the acoustic signals inside the Sun with the acoustic signals measured at the solar surface. From the constructed signals, we can form intensity map and phase-shift map of an active region at various depths. The direct link between these maps and the subsurface wave-speed perturbation suffers from the poor vertical resolution of acoustic imaging. Recently an inversion method has been developed to invert the measured phase travel time perturbation to estimate the distribution of wave-speed perturbation based on the ray approximation. This technique of acoustic imaging has been used to image the far-side of the Sun that could provides information on space weather prediction. The TON Team includes: Antonio Jimenez (Instituto Astrofisica de Canarias, Spain); Guoxiang Ai and Honqi Zhang (Huairou Solar Observing Station, P.R.C.); Philip Goode and William Marquette (Big Bear Solar Observatory, U.S.A.); Shuhrat Ehgamberdiev and Oleg Ladenkov (Ulugh Beg Astronomical Institute, Uzbekistan) This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

By combining quiet-region Fe XII coronal images from SOHO/EIT with magnetograms from NSO/Kitt Peak and from SOHO/MDI, we show that the population of network coronal bright points and the magnetic flux content of the network are both markedly greater under the bright half of the large-scale quiet corona than under the dim half. These results (1) support the view that the heating of the entire corona in quiet regions and coronal holes is driven by fine-scale magnetic activity (microflares, explosive events, spicules) seated low in the magnetic network, and (2) suggest that this large-scale modulation of the magnetic flux and coronal heating is a signature of giant convection cells. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A Twin-CME Scenario for Ground Level Enhancement Events   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ground Level Enhancement (GLEs) events are extreme Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events. Protons in these events often reach ~GeV/nucleon. Understanding the underlying particle acceleration mechanism in these events is a major goal for Space Weather studies. In Solar Cycle 23, a total of 16 GLEs have been identified. Most of them have preceding CMEs and in-situ energetic particle observations show some of them are enhanced in ICME or flare-like material. Motivated by this observation, we discuss here a scenario in which two CMEs erupt in sequence during a short period of time from the same Active Region (AR) with a pseudo-streamer-like pre-eruption magnetic field configuration. The first CME is narrower and slower and the second CME is wider and faster. We show that the magnetic field configuration in our proposed scenario can lead to magnetic reconnection between the open and closed field lines that drape and enclose the first CME and its driven shock. The combined effect of the presence of the first shock and the existence of the open close reconnection is that when the second CME erupts and drives a second shock, one finds both an excess of seed population and an enhanced turbulence level at the front of the second shock than the case of a single CME-driven shock. Therefore, a more efficient particle acceleration will occur. The implications of our proposed scenario are discussed.  相似文献

Pickup ions, created by ionization of slow moving atoms and molecules well inside the heliosphere, provide us with a new tool to probe remote regions in and beyond the heliosphere and to study injection and acceleration processes in the solar wind. Comprehensive and continuous measurements of H, He, C, N, O, Ne and other pickup ions, especially with the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on both Ulysses and ACE, have given us a wealth of data that have been used to infer chemical and physical properties of the local interstellar cloud. With SWICS on Ulysses we discovered a new population of pickup ions, produced from atomic and molecular sources deep inside the heliosphere. The velocity distributions and composition of these “inner source” pickup ions are distinctly different from those of interstellar pickup ions, showing effects of strong adiabatic cooling, and a composition resembling that of the solar wind. Strong cooling indicates that the source of these pickup ions lies close to the Sun. The similarity of composition of inner source heavy ions to that of the solar wind implies that the dominant production mechanism for these pickup ions involves the absorption and re-emission of solar wind from interplanetary dust grains. While interstellar pickup ions are the seed population of the main Anomalous Cosmic Rays (ACRs), inner source pickup ions may be an important source of the rarer ACRs such as C, Mg, Si, S, and Fe. We present new results and review previous work with an emphasis on characteristics of the local interstellar cloud and properties of the inner source. Using the Mass Time-of-Flight Spectrometer (MTOF)—part of the Charge, Elements, Isotope Analysis System (CELIAS)—onboard the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, we derive the nickel isotopic composition for the isotopes with mass 58, 60 and 62 in the solar wind. In addition we measure the elemental abundance ratio of nickel to iron. We use data accumulated during ten years of SOHO operation to get sufficiently high counting statistics and compare periods of different solar wind velocities. We compare our values with the meteoritic ratios, which are believed to be a reliable reference for the solar system and also for the solar outer convective zone, since neither element is volatile and no isotopic fractionation is expected in meteorites. Meteoritic isotopic abundances agree with the terrestrial values and can thus be considered to be a reliable reference for the solar isotopic composition. The measurements show that the solar wind elemental Ni/Fe-ratio and the isotopic composition of solar wind nickel are consistent with the meteoritic values. This supports the concept that low-FIP elements are fed without relative fractionation into the solar wind. Our result also confirms the absence of substantial isotopic fractionation processes for medium and heavy ions acting in the solar wind.  相似文献

Astrophysical limitations do not exclude the possibility of some number of dark matter primordial Black Holes (BH) being seeded in the interiors of the Earth at the epoch of planet condensation in the young Solar System. We show that limitations on the neutrino radiation due to the BH quantum evaporation and accretion growth of BH mass completely forbid the existence of primordial BH of any mass in the Earth.  相似文献

Solar irradiance variations show a strong temporal and spectral dependence. The progression of the Sun through its activity cycle as well as solar rotation are mirrored in the irradiance variations. The spectral dependence is such that the variations are several magnitudes larger in the EUV than in the visible or infrared. We present a simple 3-component model that is based on the assumption that changes in the solar flux are exclusively due to changes in spot and facular coverage. We compare our model to observations of the spectral solar irradiance variations.Despite its simplicity, we find that the agreement between our model and the observations is surprisingly good. We also explore the reliability and the limitations of our approach by comparing observations of the solar facular contrast and of the changes in spectral line depths with our calculations.  相似文献

This paper aims at placing infrared (IR) and submillimeter (submm) observations of the Solar Sytem in the context of future space missions. First, the information that mm, submm and IR observations bring on planets, satellites and comets is reviewed. Then, some lines of future research in this field are explored, and a number of observations that could enhance our understanding of Solar System objects are suggested. Finally, the adequacy of future space missions in this respect is discussed. The specific cases of ISO, FIRST and the proposed Edison are considered.  相似文献

Solar energetic particles (SEPs) provide a sample of the Sun from which solar composition may be determined. Using high-resolution measurements from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS) onboard NASA’s Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft, we have studied the isotopic composition of SEPs at energies ≥20 MeV/nucleon in large SEP events. We present SEP isotope measurements of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni made in 49 large events from late 1997 to the present. The isotopic composition is highly variable from one SEP event to another due to variations in seed particle composition or due to mass fractionation that occurs during the acceleration and/or transport of these particles. We show that various isotopic and elemental enhancements are correlated with each other, discuss the empirical corrections used to account for the compositional variability, and obtain estimated solar isotopic abundances. We compare the solar values and their uncertainties inferred from SEPs with solar wind and other solar system abundances and find generally good agreement.  相似文献

With the recent advancements in interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) imaging it is necessary to understand how heliospheric images may be interpreted, particularly at large elongation angles. Of crucial importance is how the current methods used for coronal mass ejection measurement in coronagraph images must be changed to account for the large elongations involved in the heliosphere. We present results comparing a new model of interplanetary disturbances with heliospheric image data, from the Solar Mass Ejection Imager. A database containing a range of ICMEs simulated with varying parameters describing its topology, orientation, location and speed was produced and compared with two ICMEs observed in February and December 2004. We identify the simulated ICME that best matches the data, and use the parameters required to identify their three-dimensional leading-edge structure, orientation and kinematics. By constant comparison with the data we are able to keep track of small changes to the ICME topology and kinematic properties, thus for the first time are able to monitor how the dynamic interaction between the ICME and the interplanetary medium affects ICME evolution. This is the second part of a series of three papers, where the theory behind the model is presented in an accompanying paper and the physical implications are discussed in the third part. The first part considers the effects of Thomson scattering across the entire span of the disturbance and includes its apparent geometry at large elongations. We find that the model converges reliably to a solution for both events, although we identify four separate structures during the December period. Comparing the 3-D trajectory and source location with known associated features identified with other spacecraft, we find a remarkable agreement between the model and data. We conclude with a brief discussion of the physical implications of the model.  相似文献

This paper is a review of our observational knowledge on solar magnetic fields. In Section 1 we make an attempt to summarize all observations of the general magnetic field (m.f.) of the Sun. Section 2 deals with the local m.f. at low latitudes and their connection with some features on the disk. The m.f. of sunspots and their peculiar character are considered in Section 3. The last section (4) is concerned with m.f. in sunspot groups, their changes and connections with solar activity.  相似文献

Comets are considered the most primitive planetary bodies in our Solar System, i.e., they should have best preserved the solid components of the matter from which our Solar System formed. ESA’s recent Rosetta mission to Jupiter family comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P/CG) has provided a wealth of isotope data which expanded the existing data sets on isotopic compositions of comets considerably. In this paper we review our current knowledge on the isotopic compositions of H, C, N, O, Si, S, Ar, and Xe in primitive Solar System materials studied in terrestrial laboratories and how the Rosetta data acquired with the ROSINA (Rosetta Orbiter Sensor for Ion and Neutral Analysis) and COSIMA (COmetary Secondary Ion Mass Analyzer) mass spectrometer fit into this picture. The H, Si, S, and Xe isotope data of comet 67P/CG suggest that this comet might be particularly primitive and might have preserved large amounts of unprocessed presolar matter. We address the question whether the refractory Si component of 67P/CG contains a presolar isotopic fingerprint from a nearby Type II supernova (SN) and discuss to which extent C and O isotope anomalies originating from presolar grains should be observable in dust from 67P/CG. Finally, we explore whether the isotopic fingerprint of a potential late SN contribution to the formation site of 67P/CG in the solar nebula can be seen in the volatile component of 67P/CG.  相似文献

Our study of solar cycle irradiance variability in the UV between 200 and 400 nm requires a detailed knowledge of the composition of the solar spectrum in this wavelength range. We compute the synthetic spectrum from 250 to 300 nm and compare it with ATLAS3 and SOLSTICE observations. Synthetic solar spectra for solar minimum and maximum conditions show large variations in broad, strong UV lines. Strong lines of FeI between 260 nm and 264 nm show increases between 0.4× and 3×in their max/min ratio. Our ``broad lines' database shows 167 lines with similar properties between 200 nm and 400 nm. Our results raise issues of the importance of such large variability in narrow bands and the difficulty of detection in measurements with spectral resolutions of 1 nm.  相似文献

Sunspots, seen as cool regions on the surface of the Sun, are a thermal phenomenon. Sunspots are always associated with bipolar magnetic loops that break through the solar surface. Thus to explain the origin of sunspots we have to understand how the magnetic field originates inside the Sun and emerges at its surface. The field predicted by mean-field dynamo theories is too weak by itself to emerge at the surface of the Sun. However, because of the turbulent character of solar convection the fields generated by dynamo are intermittent – i.e., concentrated into ropes or sheets with large spaces in between. The intermittent fields are sufficiently strong to be able to emerge at the solar surface, in spite of the fact that their mean (average) value is weak. It is suggested here that magnetic fields emerge at the solar surface at those random times and places when the total magnetic field (mean field plus fluctuations) exceeds the threshold for buoyancy. The clustering of coherently emerged loops results in the formation of a sunspot. A non-axisymmetric enhancement of the underlying magnetic field causes in the clustering of sunspots forming sunspot groups, clusters of activity and active longitudes. The mean field, which is not directly observable, is also important, being responsible for the ensemble regularities of sunspots, such as Hale's law of sunspot polarities and the 11-year periodicity.  相似文献
