Extragalactic research studies by the Harvard/Smithsonian group with the Einstein Observatory have emphasized quasars and clusters of galaxies. More than 100 QSO's have been detected, including 20 serendipitous discoveries. The ratio of Lx/Lo for radio loud quasars is on the average 3 times that of radio quiet ones. QSO's with a large intrinsic optical luminosity have a smaller ratio of Lx/Lo. X-ray images of clusters of galaxies reveal a variety of morphological types which may correspond to different stages in their evolution. Several examples of bi-modal clusters have been discovered. An X-ray plume associated with M86 is apparently gas being stripped. From X-ray studies, a mass between 1.7 × 1013Mθ and 4.0 × 1013 Mθ has been derived for M87.  相似文献

We have measured the X-ray flux of the bright galactic bulge source GX17+2 in the energy range 1–20 keV using the EXOSAT ME experiment. During 8 hours of continuous observation an X-ray flare was observed (lasting ~1 hr) followed by an intensity increase. The data show intensity dips with a quasiperiod of ~1.4 hours and quasi-periodic oscillations on time scale of 200–500 sec, which are possibly connected with oscillations of an accretion disc. The spectrum can be fitted by two blackbody spectra with kT1~1keV, and kT2~2keV, respectively, and an iron line at 6.3 ± 0.3 keV having 130 eV equivalent width. While the low energy component is rather stable, the 2keV-component shows considerable intensity variations. We suggest that the latter component represents emission from the inner part of the accretion disc while the soft spectrum is blackbody emission from the surface of the neutron star.  相似文献

The flight of the University of Birmingham X-ray Telescope, which took place between 29th July and 6 August 1985 is reviewed. Despite the competing demands of twelve other investigations on-board, it was found possible to plan an observing programme for the XRT which enabled a good (43%) utilisation of the total operating time to be achieved, and then to carry out this programme with high efficiency. An important element here was the inclusion within the XRT of a pointing mount, which enabled it to point with a degree of independence of the Orbiter vehicle. The background of spurious events in the detector, due mainly to energetic particles, was found to be low and well-behaved, except for occasional events which are not easy to distinguish from X-ray bursts. The spectral intensity of unrejected background varies from about 2.10−3/cm2sec keV at 8 keV to 5.10−4/cm2 sec keV at 25 keV.  相似文献

Neural networks (NNs) have been applied to ionospheric predictions recently. This paper uses radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN) to forecast hourly values of the ionospheric F2 layer critical frequency(foF2), over Wuhan (30.5N, 114.3E), China. The false nearest neighbor method is used to determine the embedding dimension, and the principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce noise and dimension. The whole study is based on a sample of about 26,000 observations of foF2 with 1-h time resolution, derived during the period from January 1981 to December 1983. The performance of RBF-NN is estimated by calculating the normalized root-mean-squared (NRMSE) error, and its results show that short-term predictions of foF2 are improved.  相似文献

We explore the capabilities of the future space science mission IXO (International X-ray Observatory) for obtaining cosmological redshifts of distant Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) using the X-ray data only. We first find in which regions of the X-ray luminosity (LX) versus redshift (z) plane the weak but ubiquitous Fe Kα narrow emission line can deliver an accurate redshift (δz < 5%) as a function of exposure time, using a CCD-based Wide Field Imager (IXO/WFI) as the one baselined for IXO. Down to a 2–10 keV X-ray flux of 10−14 erg cm−2 s−1 IXO/WFI exposures of 100 ks, 300 ks and 1 Ms will deliver 20%, 40% and 60% of the redshifts. This means that in a typical 18′ × 18′ IXO/WFI field of view, 4, 10 and 25 redshifts will be obtained for free from the X-ray data alone, spanning a wide range up to z ∼ 2–3 and fairly sampling the real distribution. Measuring redshifts of fainter sources will indeed need spectroscopy at other wavebands.  相似文献

Ariel VI observations of Cygnus X-2 have revealed a rather flat spectrum between 0.1 and 1.5 keV with variable emission at low energy. Of the two conflicting interpretations of this object in terms of i) a distant high-luminosity (Lx 1038 ergs s−1) binary and ii) a nearby low-luminosity (Lx 1035 ergs s−1) degenerate dwarf system, our measurements support the latter.  相似文献

We continue monitoring supernova remnant (SNR) 1987A with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. As of 2004 January, bright X-ray spots in the northwest and the southwest are now evident in addition to the bright eastern ring. The overall X-ray spectrum, since 2002 December, can be described by a planar shock with an electron temperature of ∼2.1 keV. The soft X-ray flux is now 8 × 10−13 ergs cm−2 s−1, which is about five times higher than four years ago. This flux increase rate is consistent with our prediction based on an exponential density distribution along the radius of the SNR between the HII region and the inner ring. We still have no direct evidence of a central point source, and place an upper limit of LX = 1.3 × 1034 ergs s−1 on the 3–10 keV band X-ray luminosity.  相似文献

The Pinhole/Occulter Facility concept uses a remote occulting mask to provide high resolution observations of the solar corona and of astronomical X-ray sources. With coded-aperture and Fourier-transform techniques, the Pinhole/Occulter makes images at a resolution of 0.2 arc sec for 2 - 120 keV X-rays, using a 50-m boom erected from the payload bay of the Space Shuttle or mounted on a free-flying platform. The remote occulter also creates a large shadow area for solar coronal observations; the Pinhole/Occulter concept includes separate optical and ultraviolet telescopes with 50-cm apertures. These large telescopes will provide a new order of resolution and sensitivity for diagnostic observations of faint structures in the solar corona. The Pinhole/Occulter is a powerful and versatile tool for general-purpose X-ray astronomy, with excellent performance in a broad spectral band complementary to that accessible with AXAF. The large collecting area of 1.5 m2 results in a 5σ detection threshold of about 0.02 μJy for the 2 - 10 keV band, or about 10?5 ph(cm2sec keV)?1 at 20 keV.  相似文献

X-ray telescopes have been providing high sensitivity X-ray observations in numerous missions. For X-ray telescopes in the future, one of the key technologies is to expand the energy band beyond 10 keV. We designed depth-graded multilayer, so-called supermirrors, for a hard X-ray telescope in the energy band up to 40 keV using lightweight thin-foil optics. They were successfully flown in a balloon flight and obtained a hard X-ray image of Cyg X-1 in the 20–40 keV band. Now supermirrors are promising to realize a hard X-ray telescope. We have estimated the performance of a hard X-ray telescope using a platinum–carbon supermirror for future satellite missions, such as NeXT (Japan) and XEUS (Europe). According to calculations, they will have a significant effective area up to 80 keV, and their effective areas will be more than 280 cm2 even at 60 keV. Limiting sensitivity will be down to 1.7 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1 in the 10–80 keV band at a 100 ks observation. In this paper, we present the results of the balloon experiment with the first supermirror flown and projected effective areas of hard X-ray telescopes and action items for future missions.  相似文献

Active regions show many short-lived emissions in the 3.5 – 5.5 keV range that are 100 to 1000 times weaker than “normal” X-ray flares. The hypothesis that they may well be miniflares is supported by the simultaneous occurrence of 2 Hα-subflares at the site of weak X-ray sources.  相似文献

The HXR79 hard X-Ray experiment was flown the August 26th 1979 from the Milo Base (Sicily, Italy) and a 27-hour flight was achieved. The scientific payload consisted of two Multiwire Spectroscopic Proportional Counters (MWSPC) with 900 cm2 sensitive geometric area each, in the hard X-Ray range (16–180 keV). A single drift scan was performed on the Crab Nebula region after the balloon reached the flotation point (2.9 mbar). The observation gave a maximum counting rate of about 25 counts/s superimposed on a background of about 75 counts/s. The Crab power-law spectrum was observed, and these data provide evidence for a line emission enhancement around 70 keV.  相似文献

BepiColombo is scheduled for launch in August 2013 and to arrive after a nearly six-year long transfer at Mercury in June 2019. The trajectory has a number of challenging elements: a launch with Soyuz/Fregat into a geostationary transfer orbit, followed by a lunar flyby, long low-thrust arcs and five more planetary flybys (one at the Earth, two at Venus and two at Mercury). At arrival the low thrust arcs reduce the approach velocity so much that BepiColombo passes by the Sun–Mercury Lagrange points L1 and L2 and gets weakly captured in a highly eccentric orbit around Mercury in case the orbit insertion manoeuvre would fail.This paper describes the navigation strategy during the final phase. Five trajectory correction manouevres during the last 65 days requiring up to 20 m/s (3σ) are proposed. With this strategy it is possible to navigate BepiColombo safely through the weak-stability boundary of Mercury and to reach the target periherm with a precision of 11 km.  相似文献

SAX is an Italian X-ray satellite with a Dutch contribution that will be placed in orbit in 1994. The prime scientific object of SAX is to cover an energy bandwidth that ranges from 0.1 keV up to 200 keV. Among other instruments, SAX will consist of two X-ray Wide Field Cameras built by the Space Research Organisation Netherlands at Utrecht. The WFCs are based on the coded mask principle, the reconstruction of the image takes place on ground. The field of view is 20 degrees square full width at half maximum (FWHM), the angular resolution 5 arcminutes (FWHM) and the energy band ranges from 1.8 to 30 keV with a resolution of 18% at 6 keV. The sensitive area is 200 cm2 at 6 keV. The mask pattern is based on a pseudo random array with 255 × 257 elements of 1 mm2, 50% of which are transparent.  相似文献

The First Spacelab Flight - scheduled for September 1983 - will carry a multidisciplinary payload intended to demonstrate that valuable scientific results can be achieved with such short duration missions. The payload complement includes a spectrometer to undertake observations of the brighter cosmic X-ray sources. The primary scientific objectives of this experiment are the study of detailed spectral features in cosmic X-ray sources and their associated temporal variations over a wide energy range from about 2 keV up to 80 keV. The instrument based on the gas scintillation proportional counter, will have an effective area of some 180 cm2 with an energy resolution of ~ 9% FWHM at 7 keV. The key performance parameters of the instrument, which include calibration results and the sensitivity of the planned observations, are discussed.  相似文献

Recent advances have enabled simultaneous Hα and X-ray observations with substantially improved spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution. In this paper we study two events observed as part of a coordinated observing program between the Solar Maximum Mission and Sacramento Peak Observatory: the flares of 1456 UT, 7 May 1980 and 1522 UT, 24 June 1980. Using recently-developed physical models of static flare chromospheres, and corresponding theoretical Hα line profiles, we can distinguish effects of intense nonthermal electron heating from those of high conduction and pressure from the overlying flare corona. Both flares show the signature of intense chromospheric heating by fast electrons, temporally correlated with X-ray light curves at E > 27keV, and spatially associated with X-ray emission sites at E >62; 16 keV. Interpreting the Hα line profile observations using the theoretical Hα line profiles, we infer values of the thick-target input power contained in nonthermal electrons that are observationally indistinguishable (within a factor of 2–3) from those inferred from the X-ray data. Although these events are small, the energy flux values are large: of order 1011 ergs cm?2 s?1 above 20 keV.  相似文献

Sco X-1 is a low mass X-ray binary system and with the recent observations of a resolved radio jet, the source has been included in the list of galactic microquasars. The observed spectral data in the 2–20 keV energy band fits a thermal emission. Above 20 keV, a hard tail has been reported on occasions. During our continuing balloon borne X-ray survey in the 20–200 keV region using high sensitivity Large Area Scintillation counter Experiment, Sco X-1 was observed on two different occasions. Even though the total X-ray luminosity of the source was different, the spectral nature of the source did not show any variation. The presence of hard X-ray flux is unmistakable. We present the spectral and temporal data in the hard X-ray band and discuss the results in terms of geometrical characteristics of X-ray source and its observed temporal properties. We note that the jet activity is similar to the microquasars, however, the absence of the large magnitude abrupt changes in X-ray light curve compared to GRS1915 + 105 suggest that the quasar-like behaviour is at a nano scale.  相似文献

硬X射线调制望远镜(HXMT)是一颗宽波段X射线(1~250 keV)天文卫星,其核心载荷高能X射线望远镜(HE)工作于硬X射线能区(20~250 keV),致力于实现硬X射线的高灵敏度巡天观测,描绘硬X射线天图,并对特殊天体作高灵敏度定点观测.为了获得高灵敏度,必须有效地抑制本底.本底主要是由轨道环境中的粒子(γ射线、质子、电子、中子)与探测器相互作用产生的.本文结合大量的描述近地空间本底的文献和最新的实测数据,整理出一套自洽的近地空间本底粒子的数据和公式,便于应用.并通过Geant 4软件模拟计算给出了HXMT的本底及本底随时间和轨道的变化.   相似文献

The Crab was observed in a balloon flight from Palestine/Texas on 9/28/81 at hard X-ray energies (20–200 keV). The light curve is significantly sharper than reported previously for this energy range. The pulse-averaged as well as the interpulse spectra show breaks in our energy-range. The variation of spectral index across the pulse has an amplitude similar to that found at lower energies by OSO-8 and larger than reported by HEAO-1 A4 at hard X-rays. For a sharp emission line at 77 keV a 99% upper limit of 1.0*10−3 photons/ cm2 sec can be placed, a factor of 4 lower than line fluxes reported previously. Pulse-shape fits to the optical, X-ray, hard X-ray and gamma ray light-curves reveal a consistent picture of the origin of the interpulse and off-pulse emission, the breaks in the spectra and the variation of spectral index, providing arguments against a thermal component and also a polar cap emission model for NP0532.  相似文献

The initial power outputs Po of pulsars are not yet well known, but these seem to follow approximately a distribution law N(> Po) ∝ Po−n where 0.5 ≤ n ≤ 1.0. It seems likely that Po ≥ 1038 ergs/sec. With these assumptions, we estimate that the DUMAND detector can record ≥ 103 high-energy (> 4 TeV) neutrino events in a four-month period per Galactic supernova; (in our Galaxy, these are estimated to occur at the rate of about 8 per century.) Neutrinos from supernova shells in the Virgo supercluster would be marginally detectable (one very bright supernova per decade at about 20 Mpc) if N(> Po) ∝ Po−0.5, but undetectable if N(> Po) ∝ Po−1. The diffuse flux summed over distant extragalactic supernovae is likely to be well below the detection threshold.  相似文献

Energy partitioning during the very high impact speed encountered in a cometary fly-by mission causes a target mass expulsion which leads to a momentum impulse on the target exceeding that of the incident momentum. Theoretical and computational studies are required to provide a basis for predictions of the response at Halley encounter, since experimental data from acceleration of microspheres extends currently only to some 10 kms?1. Such data obtained from the 2 MV Canterbury microparticle accelerator is presented: this demonstrates a target momentum enhancement E which can be approximated by a form E = 1+(V/Vo)β. Over the range 1 to 8 kms?1 the relationship is satisfied by Vo = 2 kms?1 and β = 2. Theoretical considerations of energy partitioning lead to constraints on the extrapolation of this functional dependence to very high velocities and the transition to β ≤ 1 is shown to apply. Results are examined and their significance to impact sensing and spacecraft deceleration discussed. An enhancement of momentum nearer to 12±3 at 69 kms?1 is anticipated for non-penetrating particles, from the ballistic pendulum data, but the ES data indicates a figure considerably higher.  相似文献
