Magnetic turbulence is found in most space plasmas, including the Earth’s magnetosphere, and the interaction region between the magnetosphere and the solar wind. Recent spacecraft observations of magnetic turbulence in the ion foreshock, in the magnetosheath, in the polar cusp regions, in the magnetotail, and in the high latitude ionosphere are reviewed. It is found that: 1. A large share of magnetic turbulence in the geospace environment is generated locally, as due for instance to the reflected ion beams in the ion foreshock, to temperature anisotropy in the magnetosheath and the polar cusp regions, to velocity shear in the magnetosheath and magnetotail, and to magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause and in the magnetotail. 2. Spectral indices close to the Kolmogorov value can be recovered for low frequency turbulence when long enough intervals at relatively constant flow speed are analyzed in the magnetotail, or when fluctuations in the magnetosheath are considered far downstream from the bow shock. 3. For high frequency turbulence, a spectral index α?2.3 or larger is observed in most geospace regions, in agreement with what is observed in the solar wind. 4. More studies are needed to gain an understanding of turbulence dissipation in the geospace environment, also keeping in mind that the strong temperature anisotropies which are observed show that wave particle interactions can be a source of wave emission rather than of turbulence dissipation. 5. Several spacecraft observations show the existence of vortices in the magnetosheath, on the magnetopause, in the magnetotail, and in the ionosphere, so that they may have a primary role in the turbulent injection and evolution. The influence of such a turbulence on the plasma transport, dynamics, and energization will be described, also using the results of numerical simulations.

This paper considers the effect of the rocket exhaust turbulence and scattering within the surrounding medium upon the propagation characteristics of incident electromagnetic waves. The exhaust is represented by a cylindrical plasma beam, diffusing through the surrounding medium. The equations of propagation of EM waves are derived for both TE and TM modes. By using a quasi-linear perturbation technique the exhaust is further separated into an inner homogeneous cylindrical plasma beam, and an outer conical inhomogeneous turbulent region. The isotropic change in the temperature of the outer region and its effects on the fluctuations in the density of electrons, collision frequency, and plasma index of refraction are analyzed in detail. It is found that the exhaust turbulence and scattering effects produce linear fluctuations in the E and H fields computed from the exhaust inner region effect. The equations of this paper can be used in the prediction of the radar cross sections and the attenuation of microwaves by rocket exhaust plumes.

The spectral and polarization properties of thermal cyclotron radio emission from a hot coronal loop with a current along the axis are computed. The magnetic field is supposed to have a component along the loop axis as well as a poloidal part due to the current, both components being of comparable magnitude. In this specific configuration a helical magnetic field is present with a remarkable minimum of its absolute value along the loop axis and a maximum at its periphery. The presence of one or two maxima of magnetic field value along the line of sight results in increasing optical thickness of the gyroresonance layers at appropriate frequencies in the microwave band and, therefore, in enhanced radio emission at those harmonics which are optically thin (for example,s=4). These cannot be observed in models with the commonly employed magnetic field configuration (longitudinal along the loop axis). We show that the frequency spectrum of thermal cyclotron radiation from a hot coronal loop with a helical magnetic field differs from that of the standards-component source (with smooth frequency characteristics and polarization corresponding toe-mode) in that plenty of fine structures (line-like features and cut-offs) are present and theo-mode is prevalent in some frequency intervals. The enhanced radio emission at high harmonics and the complicated form of frequency spectrum in the model considered imply that some microwave sources, which are poorly explained in traditional models of solar active regions, may be associated with helical magnetic fields in hot coronal loops. Computations allow one to indicate spectral and polarizational peculiarities of local sources testifying to the presence of a helical magnetic field.

A high frequency electromagnetic pump wave transmitted into the ionospheric plasma from the ground can stimulate electromagnetic radiation with frequencies around that of the ionospherically reflected pump wave. The numerous spectral features of these stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE) and their temporal evolution on a wide range of time scales are reviewed and related theoretical, numerical, and simulation results are discussed. On long (thermal) time scales the SEE constitutes a self-organization of the ionospheric plasma which depends on the interaction of nonlinear processes in a hierarchy of time scales in response to the electromagnetic pumping. Particularly, the appearance of the rich SEE spectrum is associated with the slow self-structuring of the plasma density into a spectrum of magnetic field-aligned density striations. The dependence of the SEE on electron gyroharmonic effects and the presence of density striations suggests that the existence of a magnetic field in the plasma is important for plasma turbulence to dissipate into non-thermal electromagnetic radiation during the long time quasi-stationary state of the turbulence evolution.

Coronal loops are heated by the release of stored magnetic energy and by the dissipation of MHD waves. Both of these processes rely on the presence of internal structure in the loop. Tangled or sheared fields dissipate wave energy more efficiently than smooth fields. Also, a highly structured field contains a large reservoir of free magnetic energy which can be released in small reconnection events (microflares and nanoflares). The typical amount of internal structure in a loop depends on the balance between input at the photosphere and dissipation. This paper describes measures of magnetic structure, how these measures relate to the magnetic energy, and how photospheric motions affect the structure of a loop. The magnetic energy released during a reconnection event. can be estimated if one knows the equilibrium energy before and after the event. For a loop with highly tangled field lines, a direct solution of the equilibrium equations may be difficult. However, lower bounds can be placed on the energy of the equilibrium field, given a measure of the tangling known as the crossing number. These bounds lead to an estimate of the buildup of energy in a coronal loop caused by random photospheric motions. Parker's topological dissipation model can plausibly supply the 107 erg cm–2 s–1 needed to heat the active region corona. The heating rate can be greatly enhanced by fragmentation of flux tubes, for example by the breakup of photospheric footpoints and the formation of new footpoints.

We review the observational and theoretical results on the physics of microwave bursts that occur in the solar atmosphere. We particularly emphasize the advances made in burst physics over the last few years with the great improvement in spatial and time resolution especially with instruments like the NRAO three element interferometer, Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and more recently the Very Large Array (VLA).We review the observations on pre-flare build-up of an active region at centimeter wavelengths. In particular we discuss the observations that in addition to the active region undergoing brightness and polarization changes on time scales of the order of an hour before a flare, there can be a change of the sense of polarization of a component of the relevant active region situated at the same location as the flare, implying the emergence of a flux of reverse polarity at coronal levels. The intensity distribution of cm- bursts is similar to that of soft X-ray and hard X-ray bursts. Indeed, it appears that the flaring behavior of the Sun at cm wavelengths is similar to that of some other cosmic transients such as flare stars and X-ray bursters. We discuss three distinct phases in the evolution of cm bursts, namely, impulsive phase, post-burst phase, and gradual rise and fall. The radiation mechanism for the impulsive phase of the microwave burst is gyrosynchrotron emission from mildly relativistic electrons that are accelerated near the energy release site and spiral in the strong magnetic field in the low corona. The details of the velocity distribution function of the energetic electrons and its time evolution are not known. We review the spectral characteristics for two kinds of velocity distribution, e.g., Maxwellian and Maxwellian with a power law tail for the energetic electrons. In the post-burst phase the energetic electrons are gradually thermalized. The thermal plasma released in the energy release region as well as the expanded parts of the overheated upper chromosphere may alter the emission mechanism. Thus, in the post-burst phase, depending on the average density and temperature of the thermal plasma, the emission mechanism may change from gyrosynchrotron to collisional bremsstrahlung from a thermal plasma. The gradual rise and fall (GFR) burst represents the heating of a flare plasma to temperatures of the order of 106 K, in association with a flare or an X-ray transient following a filament disruption. We discuss the flux density spectra of centimeter bursts. The great majority of the bursts have a single spectral maximum, commonly around 6 cm- The U-shaped signature sometimes found in cm-dcm burst spectrum of large bursts is believed to a be a reflection of only the fact that there are two different sources of burst radiation, one for cm- and the other for dcm-, with different electron energy distributions and different magnetic fields.Observations of fine structures with temporal resolutionof 10–100 ms in the intensity profiles of cm- bursts are described. The existence of such fine time structures imply brightness temperatures in burst sources of order 1015 K; their interpretation in terms of gyrosynchrotron measuring or the coherent interaction of upper hybrid waves excited by percipitating electron beams in a flaring loop is discussed.High spatial resolution observations (a few seconds of arc to 1 arc) are discussed, with special reference to the one- and two-dimensional maps of cm burst sources. The dominance of one sense of circular polarization in some weak 6 cm bursts and its interpretation in terms of energetic electrons confined in an asymmetric magnetic loop is discussed. Two-dimensional snapshot maps obtained with the VLA show that multi-peak impulsive 6 cm burst phase radiation originates from several arcades of loops and that the burst source often occupies a substantial portion of the flaring loop, and is not confined strictly to the top of the loop. This phenomenon is interpreted in terms of the trapping of energetic electrons due to anomalous doppler resonance instability and the characteristic scale length of the magnetic field variation along the loop. The VLA observations also indicate that the onset of the impulsive phase of a 6 cm burst can be associated with the appearance of a new system of loops. The presence of two loop systems with opposite polarities or a quadrupole field configuration is reminiscent of flare models in which a current sheet develops in the interface between two closed loops. We provide an extensive review of the emission and absorption processes in thermal and non-thermal velocity distributions. Unlike the thermal plasma where absorption and emission are inter-related through Kirchoff's law, the radiation emitted from a small population of non-thermal electrons can be reabsorbed from the same electrons (self-absorption) or from the background (thermal) electrons through gyro-resonance absorption, and free-free absorption. We also suggest that the non-thermal electrons can be unstable and these instabilities can be the source of very high brightness temperature, fine structure ( 10 ms) pulsations. Finally in the last part of this review we present several microwave burst models-the magnetic trap model, the two-component model, thermal model and the flaring loop model and give a critical discussion of the strength and weakness of these models.

The need for a correct quantitative treatment of the interactions between cosmic rays and turbulent magnetic fields continues to be one of the fundamental problems of modern astrophysics. It is the aim of this paper to review new developments in the understanding of mechanisms involved in the scattering of charged particles by magnetic field fluctuations. Special emphasis is given to a comparison of transport parameters determined from the modeling of spacecraft and neutron monitor observation of solar particle events, with theoretical predictions derived from a spectral analysis of simultaneously measured fluctuation spectra. It appears that the traditional quasi-linear theory of particle scattering requires only a slight modification, and the major problem still is our lack of knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of the magnetic turbulence. Possibilities to better reconcile the theory with observations by properly taking into account the microphysics of wave and turbulence aspects of the fluctuations, and to use energetic particles as probes to study certain properties of the magnetic turbulence, are discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Non-thermal components are key ingredients for understanding clusters of galaxies. In the hierarchical model of structure formation, shocks and large-scale turbulence are unavoidable in the cluster formation processes. Understanding the amplification and evolution of the magnetic field in galaxy clusters is necessary for modelling both the heat transport and the dissipative processes in the hot intra-cluster plasma. The acceleration, transport and interactions of non-thermal energetic particles are essential for modelling the observed emissions. Therefore, the inclusion of the non-thermal components will be mandatory for simulating accurately the global dynamical processes in clusters. In this review, we summarise the results obtained with the simulations of the formation of galaxy clusters which address the issues of shocks, magnetic field, cosmic ray particles and turbulence.

The Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on SOHO is a grazing/normal incidence spectrograph, aimed to produce stigmatic spectra of selected regions of the solar surface in six spectral windows of the extreme ultraviolet from 150 Å to 785 Å (Harrison et al. 1995). In the present work, CDS, EIT, MDI and Yohkoh observations of active region lops have been analyzed. These observations are part of JOP 54. CDS monochromatic images from lines at different temperatures have been co-aligned with EIT and MDI images, and loop structures have been clearly identified using Fe XVI emission lines. Density sensitive lines and lines from adjacent stages of ionization of Fe ions have been used to measure electron density and temperature along the loop length; these measurements have been used to determine the electron pressure along the loop and test the constant pressure assumption commonly used in loop modeling. The observations have been compared with a static, isobaric loop model (Landini and Monsignori Fossi 1975) assuming a temperature-constant heating function in the energy balance equation. Good agreement is found for the temperature distribution along the loop at the coronal level. The model pressure is somewhat higher than obtained from density sensitive line ratios.

Solar wind is probably the best laboratory to study turbulence in astrophysical plasmas. In addition to the presence of magnetic field, the differences with neutral fluid isotropic turbulence are: (i) weakness of collisional dissipation and (ii) presence of several characteristic space and time scales. In this paper we discuss observational properties of solar wind turbulence in a large range from the MHD to the electron scales. At MHD scales, within the inertial range, turbulence cascade of magnetic fluctuations develops mostly in the plane perpendicular to the mean field, with the Kolmogorov scaling $k_{\perp}^{-5/3}$ for the perpendicular cascade and $k_{\|}^{-2}$ for the parallel one. Solar wind turbulence is compressible in nature: density fluctuations at MHD scales have the Kolmogorov spectrum. Velocity fluctuations do not follow magnetic field ones: their spectrum is a power-law with a ?3/2 spectral index. Probability distribution functions of different plasma parameters are not Gaussian, indicating presence of intermittency. At the moment there is no global model taking into account all these observed properties of the inertial range. At ion scales, turbulent spectra have a break, compressibility increases and the density fluctuation spectrum has a local flattening. Around ion scales, magnetic spectra are variable and ion instabilities occur as a function of the local plasma parameters. Between ion and electron scales, a small scale turbulent cascade seems to be established. It is characterized by a well defined power-law spectrum in magnetic and density fluctuations with a spectral index close to ?2.8. Approaching electron scales, the fluctuations are no more self-similar: an exponential cut-off is usually observed (for time intervals without quasi-parallel whistlers) indicating an onset of dissipation. The small scale inertial range between ion and electron scales and the electron dissipation range can be together described by $\sim k_{\perp}^{-\alpha}\exp(-k_{\perp}\ell_{d})$ , with α?8/3 and the dissipation scale ? d close to the electron Larmor radius ? d ?ρ e . The nature of this small scale cascade and a possible dissipation mechanism are still under debate.

In this paper a global system of the magnetic field and current from the interaction of the solar wind plasma and the interstellar medium is modeled using a 3-D MHD simulation. The terminal shock, the heliopause and the outer shock are clearly determined in our simulation. In the heliosheath the toroidal magnetic field is found to increase with the distance from the sun. The magnetic field increases rapidly in the upstream region of the heliosheath and becomes maximum between the terminal shock and the heliopause. Hence a shell-type magnetic wall is found to be formed in the heliosheath. Because of this magnetic wall the radially expanding solar wind plasma changes its direction tailward in all latitudes except the equatorial region. Only the equatorial disk-like plasma flow is found to extend to the heliopause through the weak magnetic-field region around the equator. Two kinds of global current loops which sustain the toroidal magnetic field in the heliosphere are found in our simulation. The influence of the 11-year solar cycle variation of the magnetic polarity is also examined. It is found that the polarity of the toroidal magnetic field in the heliosheath switches at every solar cycle change. Hence the heliosheath is found to consist of such magnetized plasma bubbles. The neutral sheets are found to extend between such magnetized plasma bubbles in the 3-D heliosheath in a complicated form. The magnetic-pressure effect on the heliosheath plasma structure is also examined.

Numerical solutions of the time-dependent MHD equations are used to generate ambient coronal streamer structures in a corona characteristic of that near solar minimum. The streamers are then disrupted by slow photospheric shear motion at the base of magnetic field lines within the closed field region, which is currently believed to be responsible for producing at least some CMEs. In contrast to several other simulations of this phenomena, the polytropic index is maintained at a value of 5/3 through the addition of coronal heating. Observations are used as a guide in determining the thermodynamic structure and plasma beta in the ambient corona. For a shear speed of 2.5 km/sec, the streamer configuration evolves slowly for about 65 hours before erupting outward with the formation of a CME. The bright CME leading edge travels outward at a speed of about 240 km/sec, and the sheared field lines follow at a somewhat slower speed. A closed magnetic field region is ejected as the magnetic field lines that were opened by the CME reconnect and reform the streamer.

The application of grooved surface structure is an emerging and effective means in turbulence flow control. However, for a realistic configuration, the global flow field described directly by simple application of massive grids makes it unfeasible to simulate. In this paper, a boundary surrogate model reproducing the effect of microscopic near-wall region is proposed to improve computational efficiency. The surrogate model trained with Lattice Boltzmann Method(LBM) considering the rarefied effec...
