EXOSAT CMA and GSPC observations of the Perseus Cluster of galaxies are reported. The soft X-ray image data confirm the earlier Einstein Observatory results in terms of the density distribution radially outward from NGC1275. We have used the GSPC spectral data at higher energies to study the strength of the X-ray continuum and of the Fe line emission over the cluster. An asymmetry is found in the distribution of the hot gas around NGC1275, which is consistent with the E-W direction of the ellipticity discovered at soft X-rays by the Einstein Observatory.  相似文献

We have examined the surface brightness profiles of four of the brightest compact galactic X-ray sources observed with the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) aboard the Einstein Observatory for the existence of halos produced by the scattering of X-rays from interstellar dust. The sources are CYG X-3, 4U1658-48, GX13+1, and 4U1254-69. The halos are apparent when a comparison is made between each source's measured surface brightness profile and a model profile based upon a point response function (PRF) for each source. These model profiles depend upon knowledge of the source's spectrum, which is derived from the IPC itself and corroborated by the Einstein Monitor Proportional Counter and/or previous measurements. As conclusions rest entirely on a knowledge of the system (IPC and Mirror) PRF, we began this study with a comprehensive examination of the calibration data taken for the Observatory prior to launch. Point-source images for both the IPC and the HRI have been analyzed at various energies in order to gain a quantitative understanding of scattering by the mirror surface elements and the IPC's spatial resolution. All four sources show a significant excess above the response from a point-source. The attribution of the excess to X-rays scattered from interstellar dust is strengthened by the positive correlation of the magnitude of this excess with the observed column density of material along the line of sight. Furthermore, we have examined the surface brightness profiles of LMC X-1 and 3C273 and found them to have a greatly reduced excess above their model profiles. Because of their high galactic latitude and because only dust within our own galaxy will lead to the formation of a halo that extends beyond a few arcminutes, only a small effect is expected for these sources.  相似文献

Most, but not all, theoretical models of X-ray bursters require a binary system consisting of a mass donating star and a neutron star. The observational evidence in support of this model, however, is both indirect and meager. We have detected absorption dips in the X-ray spectrum of the Burster MXB 1916-05 with the IPC and the MPC on the Einstein Observatory which occur with a binary period of 2985 seconds. These dips are shown to be the result of a gas stream emanating from a companion star and hence this data represents the first direct evidence of the binary nature of X-ray bursters. Detailed models of the interaction of the gas stream with the accretion disk are presented. A 22nd mag. optical candidate for the system has been found.  相似文献

We present the results of a search for millisecond rotational pulsations in the X-ray emission of five low-mass X-ray binaries: MXB1728-34, 4U1702-42, 4U1705-44, 4U1755-33 and GX17+2. The data were obtained by the EXOSAT Medium Energy Experiment Argon Counters (1–20 keV) with a time resolution of 7.8125 milliseconds. We searched for periods in the range from 16 msec to 8 sec. Upper limits of 1.5 – 5% were found at a 3 sigma level.  相似文献

The EXOSAT observatory has detected the nucleus of NGC 1360 in four photometric energy bands. The data rules out that the emission is from blackbody origin. Initial fits made with LTE model atmosphere spectra require the presence of highly ionized Oxygen and Neon in the stellar atmosphere.  相似文献

We have measured the X-ray flux of the bright galactic bulge source GX17+2 in the energy range 1–20 keV using the EXOSAT ME experiment. During 8 hours of continuous observation an X-ray flare was observed (lasting ~1 hr) followed by an intensity increase. The data show intensity dips with a quasiperiod of ~1.4 hours and quasi-periodic oscillations on time scale of 200–500 sec, which are possibly connected with oscillations of an accretion disc. The spectrum can be fitted by two blackbody spectra with kT1~1keV, and kT2~2keV, respectively, and an iron line at 6.3 ± 0.3 keV having 130 eV equivalent width. While the low energy component is rather stable, the 2keV-component shows considerable intensity variations. We suggest that the latter component represents emission from the inner part of the accretion disc while the soft spectrum is blackbody emission from the surface of the neutron star.  相似文献

The young supernova remnant Cas A has been observed with the imaging proportional counter (PSD) of the EXOSAT observatory. High quality spatially resolved, spectral data allow for the first time the determination of the temperature structure of the remnant. Preliminary results on the distribution of temperature and emission measureover the remnant are presented.  相似文献

We observed the 5.2 h X-ray binary 4U2129+47 for more than one orbital cycle on 29 September and 4 October 1983 using the LE, ME and GSPC detectors of the ESA X-ray satellite EXOSAT. In neither detector an X-ray flux from the source could be detected. Quasi-simultaneous UBV observations using the 2.2 m telescop at the German-Spanish Astronomical Center, Calar Alto, failed to detect the large amplitude light curve reported in earlier observations but show the optical companion in a low intensity state. The large amplitude light curve has been interpreted as due to X-ray heating of the optical star by the X-ray source similar to the system Her X-1/HZ Her. Our optical observations indicate that the heating X-ray source has been shut off and nicely explain that EXOSAT failed to detect the source. 4U2129+47 seems to behave similar to Her X-1 in the optical quiescent state, seen for instance from 1949 to 1956.  相似文献

An X-ray flare was observed from Algol using the low and medium energy detectors on the European Space Agency's EXOSAT observatory. Spectra obtained during the flare are well fitted by thermal continua while an Fe XXV emission feature was also detected. The strength of this feature indicates a cosmic abundance for iron. The data indicate that the flare occurred in a loop of height approximately 0.25 of the K star radius & with a magnetic field >300 Gauss.  相似文献

We present examples of the quasi-periodic variations in the X-ray flux of Cyg X-3 which we have recently found during observations of this source with EXOSAT. Amplitudes and periods of the variations range from 5% to 20% of the total flux and from 50 to 1500 s, respectively. Our tentative interpretation of these quasi-periodicities, the occurrence of quasi-periodic phenomena in an accretion disk which partially occults the X-ray source, points towards an analogy of Cyg X-3 with certain ‘dipping’ low-mass X-ray binaries such as 4U 1822-37, as suggested /1/ previously. We point out, however, that there are also fundamental differences between Cyg X-3 and this type of low-mass X-ray binary.  相似文献

Observations with the imaging X-ray detectors on the Einstein Observatory have led to a large increase in the number of low luminosity X-ray sources known to be associated with cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). The high sensitivity of the Einstein instrumentation has permitted study of their short timescale variability and spectra. The data are adding significantly to our knowledge of the accretion process in cataclysmic variables and forcing some revision in our ideas concerning the origin of the optical variability in these stars.  相似文献

Observational evidence suggests that gamma ray bursts have a local galactic origin involving neutron stars. In this light we make a critical review of physics of the thermonuclear runaway model placing emphasis on self-consistency. We further show that some of the proposed models can be observationally excluded in the light of existing data from the Einstein Observatory. The possibility of gamma bursts arising in low mass binaries is finally discussed in the light of evolutionary scenarios leading to low luminosity systems.  相似文献

We have created bright matter wave solitons by using a Feshbach resonance to tune the interactions in a Bose–Einstein condensate of 7Li. The solitons are made to propagate in a one-dimensional potential formed by a focused laser beam. We observed dispersive wave-like properties for repulsive interactions and soliton-like behavior for attractive interactions. Adjacent solitons are observed to interact repulsively.  相似文献

Ginga observations have suggested the presence of iron absorption edges at energies appropriate for highly ionised material in the X-ray spectra of a significant number of active galactic nuclei. Here, we present a detailed self-consistent analysis of a series of Ginga and EXOSAT observations of MR2251-178, the original prototype of this warm-absorber phenomenon. The observations do indeed support the presence of a substantial column density of highly ionised material.

The ionisation state of the material responds to changes in the the luminosity of the ionising continuum, with the ionisation state of oxygen being particularly sensitive. Analysis of this variability leads to constraints on the density and location of this material as well as its total amount.  相似文献

EXOSAT has observed 19 hot white dwarfs with alleged strong soft X-ray emission. Positive detection of a large fraction of this sample was obtained, among these practically all hot DA dwarfs. High-resolution spectral data, acquired with the 500 1/mm grating spectrometer, indicates no traces of He in the atmosphere of HZ43, i.e. n(He)/n(H) ? 10?5 at a photospheric temperature of 60000 K (log g = 8). In contrast, the hot DA1 dwarf Feige 24 shows the presence of an appreciable He-abundance (n(He)/n(H) ? 10?3); however no simple homogeneously mixed H/He atmosphere can explain the observed spectral shape.  相似文献

A century ago, Albert Einstein began creating his theory of relativity, the ideas we use to understand space, time, and gravity, and he took some of the first steps towards the theory of quantum mechanics, the ideas we use to understand matter and energy. Time magazine named Einstein the “Person of the Century” because his ideas transformed civilization. But his work is not finished: spacetime is not yet reconciled with the quantum. Einstein’s general theory of relativity opened possibilities for the formation and structure of the Universe that seemed unbelievable even to Einstein himself but which have all been subsequently confirmed: that the whole Universe began in a hot, dense Big Bang from which all of space expanded; that dense matter could tie spacetime into tangled knots called black holes; and that “empty” space might contain energy with repulsive gravity. Despite these discoveries, we still do not understand conditions at the beginning of the Universe, how space and time behave at the edge of a black hole, or why distant galaxies are accelerating away from us. These phenomena represent the most extreme interactions of matter and energy with space and time. They are the places to look for clues to the next fundamental revolution in understanding – Beyond Einstein.  相似文献

EXOSAT observations of the dwarf nova VW Hydri reveal a strong soft X-ray flux during optical superoutburst. The onset of the X-ray outburst was delayed by 2.5 days compared to the optical outburst. A modulation of the extreme soft X-ray flux was detected, consistent with a coherent (0 >x 107) pulsation with a period of 14.07 seconds, probably reflecting the rotation period of the white dwarf.IIf this is indeed the case, VW Hydri is the fastest rotating white dwarf detected so far.  相似文献

In the past three years, a new era of study of globular clusters has begun with multiwavelength observations from the current generation of astronomical telescopes in space. We review the recent results obtained from our studies of compact binaries and x-ray sources in globulars with ROSAT and HST as well as our balloon-borne hard x-ray telescope EXITE and ground-based observations (CTIO). With ROSAT, we have obtained the most sensitive high resolution soft x-ray images of clusters which show multiple low luminosity sources in cluster cores that are likely indicative of the long-sought population of cataclysmic variables (CVs). We have obtained deep H images of two clusters with HST and found CV candidates for 3 of the ROSAT sources in the core of NGC 6397. New CTIO imaging and spectroscopy of two ‘dim source’ fields in ω-Cen are also described. With EXITE we carried out the first hard x-ray imaging observations of the cluster 47 Tuc; such studies can ultimately limit the populations of millisecond pulsars and pulsar emission mechanisms. A long ROSAT exposure on 47 Tuc also shows probable cluster diffuse emission, possibly due to hot gas from ablating millisecond pulsars. Multiwavelength studies of globular clusters may provide new constraints on problems as diverse as the origin of CVs and LMXBs and the origin of hot gas in globulars.  相似文献

X-ray bursters and galactic bulge x-ray sources, or the most luminous x-ray sources in the galaxy, are reasonably well constrained in their basic nature but not in their origin. We have suggested they may all have been produced by tidal capture in high density cores of globular clusters, which have now largely been disrupted by tidal stripping and shocking in the galactic plane. General arguments are presented for cluster disruption by the possible ring of giant molecular clouds in the Galaxy. Tests of the cluster disruption hypothesis are in progress and preliminary results are summarized here. The G-K star “companions” previously noted for at least 4 bursters have spectra (in the two cases observed) consistent with metal rich cluster giants. Several possibilities are discussed, including the formation of hierarchical triples in the dissolving cluster or in the galactic plane.  相似文献

The Einstein Observatory, by virtue of its increased sensitivity and improved angular resolution, has increased substantially the number of known X-ray emitting active galactic nuclei. This has made possible the detailed study of the relation of X-ray flux to both the continuum flux in the optical and radio bands, and to the line emission properties of these objects. In addition, the Einstein imaging instruments have detected morphology in AGN X-ray emission, in particular from jetlike structures in Cen-A, M87, and 3C273.The improved energy resolution and sensitivity of the spectrometers onboard the Observatory has provided detailed information on the geometry and ionization structure of the region responsible for the broad optical emission lines in a few AGN's. Such information, combined with detailed theoretical modeling and IUE and optical observations, have allowed us to construct a moderately detailed picture of the broad line region in these objects.  相似文献
