Evidence for correlations of brightness fluctuations of heads of comets with solar and solar-related phenomena is presented, and the examples of Comet Schwassmann-Wachmann (1) and Giacobini-Zinner in 1959 and 1972 are examined. Brightness behavior of comets and the general level of solar activity in the eleven-year cycle appear to be statistically related. At present the responses of individual comets to solar events are not sufficiently well calibrated to permit using them as reliable interplanetary probes.  相似文献

The first observations of solar cosmic rays were made simultaneously by many investigators at worldwide cosmic-ray stations in the periods of powerful chromospheric flares on February 28 and March 7, 1942. The discovery of these and the investigation of cosmic-ray solar-daily variations with maximum time near noon led some authors (Richtmyer and Teller, 1948; Alfvén, 1949, 1950) to a model of apparent cosmic-ray solar origin. We present here the results of the properties of solar cosmic rays from ground events (experimental and theoretical investigations). We also discuss important information from solar experimental data relating to these ground events observed in September and October 1989 and May 1990. Some experimental evidence of acceleration processes in associated phenomena with flares and long-term (solar cycle) variation of the average flux of solar cosmic rays is discussed as also cornal and interplanetary propagation, and that in the terrestrial magnetosphere. Note that the energy spectrum of solar cosmic rays varied very strongly from one flare to another. What are the causes of these phenomena? What is the nature of chemical and isotopic contents of solar cosmic rays? How can its changes occur in the energy spectrum and chemical contents of solar cosmic rays in the process of propagation? Is it possible to recalculate these parameters to the source? What makes solar cosmic rays rich in heavy nucleus and3He? The important data about electrons, positrons, gamma-quanta and neutrons from flares will be discussed in a subsequent paper (Dorman and Venkatesan, 1992). The question is: What main acceleration mechanism of solar flare and associated phenomena are reliable? These problems are connected with the more general problem on solar flare origin and its energetics. In Dorman and Venkatesan (1993) we will consider these problems as well as the problem of prediction of radiation hazard from solar cosmic rays (not only in space, but also in the Earth's atmosphere too).  相似文献

The relative abundances of low energy ions (0.6–2.0 MeV/n) in solar energetic particle (SEP) and corotating interaction region (CIR) events have been measured by the EPAC experiment aboard Ulysses since launch in October 1990 until the present time. We give an overview of the abundances of heavy ions (He, C, Ne, Fe) relative to oxygen during energetic particle events lasting longer than 5 days during the in- and out-of-ecliptic phase of the mission. While the period Oct. 1990 to Aug. 1992 was dominated by high solar activity the Ulysses out of ecliptic passage at solar latitudes up to 45° went parallel to the declining phase of solar activity. Thus a very clear structure of corotating interaction regions was observed. While the in-ecliptic composition is in general agreement with measurements made near the Earth, the development of the CIR-composition shows two phases: From Aug. 1992 to May 1993 the C/O-ratio is 0.55–0.70, afterwards it increases to 0.8–0.9. This increase is correlated to the disappearance of the current sheet at 30° solar latitude reported by Smithet al. (1993).  相似文献

The planned missions to Comet Halley, which will arrive at the nearest space of the Sun in 1986, have recently revived interest in studying solar wind interaction with comets. Several unsolved problems exist and the most urgent of them are as follows:
  1. The character of the solar wind interaction with comets: bow shocks and contact surface formation near comets; similarities and differences of solar- wind interaction with comets and with Venus. The differences are probably associated with a great extension of neutral atmospheres of comets (due to a practical lack of cometary gravitation) and the ‘loading’ of the solar wind flux by cometary ions during the interaction.
  2. The anomalous ionization in cometary heads.
  3. The problem of the anamalously high accelerations of ions in the plasma tails of comets.
  4. The variability of plasma structures observed in cometary tails.

I have analyzed geomagnetic disturbance index C9, mean solar magnetic field observed at Stanford Solar Observatory for the interval January 13, 1976 – December 30, 1993. It has been established a good correspondence between high-intensity geomagnetic recurrent and solar magnetic field patterns during whole period analyzed. A surprising thing is that the behavior of the solar mean field and interplanetary medium in the latest two solar cycles is very similar. Geomagnetic activity variations actually could serve as an ecliptic monitor of solar magnetic field structure and its evolution.  相似文献

Between its launch in October 1990 and the end of 1993, approximately 160 fast collisionless shock waves were observed in the solar wind by the Ulysses space probe. During the in-ecliptic part of the mission, to February 1992, the observed shock waves were first caused mainly by solar transient events following the solar maximum and the reorganisation of the large scale coronal fields. With the decay in solar activity, relatively stable Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) were observed betwen 3 and 5.4 AU, each associated with at least one forwardreverse shock pair. During the out-of-ecliptic phase of the orbit, from February 1992 onwards, CIRs and shock pairs associated with them continued to dominate the observations. From July 1992, Ulysses encountered the fast solar wind flow from the newly developed southern polar coronal hole, and from May 1993 remained in the unipolar magnetic region associated with this coronal hole. At latitudes beyond 30°, CIRs were associated almost exclusively with reverse shocks only. A comprehensive list of shock waves identified in the magnetic field and solar wind plasma data from Ulysses is given in Table 1. The principal characteristics were determined mainly from the magnetic field data. General considerations concerning the determination of shock characteristics are outlined in the Introduction.  相似文献

The gas flux from a volatile icy-dust mixture is computed using a comet nucleus thermal model in order to study the evolution of CO outgassing during several apparitions from long-period Comet Hale-Bopp and short-period Comet Wirtanen. The comet model assumes a spherical, porous body containing a dust component, one major ice component (H2O), and one minor ice component of higher volatility (CO). The initial chemical composition is assumed to be homogeneous. The following processes are taken into account: heat and gas diffusion inside the rotating nucleus; release of outward diffusing gas from the comet nucleus; chemical differentiation by sublimation of volatile ices in the surface layers and recondensation of gas in deeper, cooler layers. A 2-D time dependent solution is obtained through the dependence of the boundary conditions on the local solar illumination as the nucleus rotates. The model for Comet Hale-Bopp was compared with observational measurements (Biver et al., 1999). The best agreement was obtained for a model with amorphous water ice and CO, assuming that a part of the latter is trapped by the water ice, another part is condensed as an independent ice phase. The model confirms that sublimation of CO ice at large heliocentric distance produces a gradual increase in the comet's activity as it approaches the Sun. Crystallization of amorphous water ice begins at 7 AU from the Sun, but no outbursts were found. Seasonal effects and thermal inertia of the nucleus material lead to larger CO outgassing rates as the comet recedes from the Sun. In the second part of this work the model was run with the orbital parameters of Comet Wirtanen. Unlike Comet Hale-Bopp, the predicted CO outgassing from Comet Wirtanen is almost constant throughout its orbit. Such behavior can be explained by a thermally evolved and chemically differentiated comet nucleus. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Solar proton events can adversely affect space and ground-based systems. Ground-level events are a subset of solar proton events that have a harder spectrum than average solar proton events and are detectable on Earth’s surface by cosmic radiation ionization chambers, muon detectors, and neutron monitors. This paper summarizes the space weather effects associated with ground-level solar proton events during the 23rd solar cycle. These effects include communication and navigation systems, spacecraft electronics and operations, space power systems, manned space missions, and commercial aircraft operations. The major effect of ground-level events that affect manned spacecraft operations is increased radiation exposure. The primary effect on commercial aircraft operations is the loss of high frequency communication and, at extreme polar latitudes, an increase in the radiation exposure above that experienced from the background galactic cosmic radiation. Calculations of the maximum potential aircraft polar route exposure for each ground-level event of the 23rd solar cycle are presented. The space weather effects in October and November 2003 are highlighted together with on-going efforts to utilize cosmic ray neutron monitors to predict high energy solar proton events, thus providing an alert so that system operators can possibly make adjustments to vulnerable spacecraft operations and polar aircraft routes.  相似文献

The history of optical observations of the solar corona is traced through the development of lour topics: the observation of naturally occurring total solar eclipses, the discovery of forbidden emission lines in the solar corona, the development of narrow spectral bandpass observing techniques, and the invention of the coronagraph. These events occurred over a span of time from the middle of the last century until the present.Paper presented at the IX-th Lindau Workshop The Source Region of the Solar Wind. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Data collected by the magnetometer onboard the Ulysses spacecraft are surveyed for the occurrence of waves generated during the pick-up of interstellar hydrogen. Thirty one wave events were found during a 640 day study period, between March 21, 1992 and December 20, 1993 (after the Ulysses encounter with Jupiter). It is found that observation of the waves does not depend on the magnitude of the background magnetic field, but is a strong function of the angle between the magnetic field and the solar wind flow direction, with small angles being favored.  相似文献

We present observations of energetic (0.34–8 MeV) ions from the Ulysses spacecraft during its second ascent to southern high latitude regions of the heliosphere. We cover the period from January 1999 until mid-2000 as Ulysses moved from 5.2 AU and 18° S to 3.5 AU and 55° S. In contrast to the long-lived and well-defined ∼26-day recurrences that were observed throughout Ulysses‘ first southern pass, energetic ion fluxes during the first portion of the Ulysses’ second polar orbit are highly irregular. Although corotating interaction regions (CIRs) are clearly present in solar wind and magnetic field data throughout the first half of 1999, their effects on energetic ion intensities are quite different from what they were in 1992–1993. No dominant strictly recurrent ion flux increases are observed in association with the arrival of these CIRs. Correspondingly, there is no stable structure of large polar coronal holes during the same period. Isolated transient solar energetic particle (SEP) events are observed at low and high latitudes. We compare energetic ion observations from the ACE and Ulysses spacecraft during the first half of 1999 to determine the influence of these SEP events in the observed recurrent CIR structure. Such SEP events occurred only occasionally during 1992–1993, but when they occurred, they obscured the recurrences in a manner similar to that observed in 1999–2000. We therefore conclude that the basic differences in the behavior of energetic ion events between the first and second southern passes are due to the short life of the corotating structure and the higher frequency of SEP events occurring in 1999–2000. The next chapter in our ongoing quest for discovery began in the last half of the 20th century, with the initiation of robotic exploration of our solar system. In less than fifty years, we have broken free of Earth's gravity and flown spacecraft to every planet in the solar system except Pluto. The ultimate goal of this exploration is to establish a virtual (and, perhaps, someday, an actual) human presence throughout the solar system. Clearly, communications is one of the central elements of creating such a virtual presence, and also one of the biggest technical challenges in planetary exploration. Transmit performance is characterized by the product of antenna gain and transmitter power, while receive performance scales with the ratio of aperture effective area to system noise temperature. A number of key communications technology advances have enabled our planetary exploration to date, and future technology will open the door to new vistas in space exploration  相似文献

The formation of the observed solar cosmic ray (SCR) composition remains an open question. It has become particularly acute after the discovery of 3He-rich events. The 3He/4He abundance ratio revealed in such events exceeds substantially (up to four orders of magnitude) that in the solar atmosphere. The data available on the 3He-rich events are discussed and a list of all such events known up to date is presented. Most of the 3He-rich SCR events can be associated with the corresponding optical flares on the Sun, with X-ray and radiobursts. An analysis of the models of 3He enrichement proposed up to now shows that only preferential 3He heating by plasma mechanisms can provide the observed high enrichment levels (3He/4He 1).A model involving preferential heating of 3He by induced scattering on ions of the ion acoustic waves generated by flare associated electrons in the solar atmosphere is considered in detail. This model can account for the major properties of the 3He-rich flares.Observational implications of the 3He-rich solar flare model are analyzed; the predictions of the theory are compared with the experimental data available, and promising avenues of further relevant experimental and theoretical research are considered. However it is shown that all main conclusions made based on the expressions ((3.2), (3.11), (3.12)) remain the same.  相似文献

ROSETTA — the Comet Nucleus Sample Return mission — is one of the four Cornerstone missions to which ESA has committed itself in its approved Long-Term Programme Horizon 2000. The mission is currently being studied in collaboration with NASA. The comet-nucleus samples that ROSETTA is to provide will allow us to study some of the most primitive material in the solar system and the physical and chemical processes that marked the beginning of the system 4.6 billion years ago. For ESA, ROSETTA is a new type of mission: one which will return a sample at cryogenic temperature, and where as much effort has to be spent on preparing the laboratory analysis on-ground as has to be invested in preparing the space segment with the sample acquisition and in situ documentation. As part of the preparation for this mission, ESA is now starting to consider Planetary Protection issues.  相似文献

The Plasma Experiment for Planetary Exploration (PEPE) flown on Deep Space 1 combines an ion mass spectrometer and an electron spectrometer in a single, low-resource instrument. Among its novel features PEPE incorporates an electrostatically swept field-of-view and a linear electric field time-of-flight mass spectrometer. A significant amount of effort went into developing six novel technologies that helped reduce instrument mass to 5.5 kg and average power to 9.6 W. PEPE’s performance was demonstrated successfully by extensive measurements made in the solar wind and during the DS1 encounter with Comet 19P/Borrelly in September 2001. P. Barker is deceased.  相似文献

A remarkable streaming beam-like particle event of 60 keV-5 MeV ions and of 38–315 keV electrons has been reported previously. This event has been associated with the passage of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) over the Ulysses spacecraft on June 9–13, 1993. At this time, the spacecraft was located at 4.6 AU from the sun and at an heliolatitude of 32° south. It was proposed (Armstrong et al., 1994) that the particle injection source could have been of coronal origin. In this study, we analyse the solar activity during this period. We identify a region of solar radio noise storms in the corona and in particular, a flare on June 7 that presents all the required characteristics to produce the hot plasma beam observed in the interplanetary medium.  相似文献

Now extinct short-lived radioactive isotopes were apparently extant in the early solar system. Their abundances can be inferred from isotopic effects in their daughter nuclei in primitive meteorites, and the deviation of these abundances from expectations from continuous galactic nucleosynthesis yields important information on the last nucleosynthetic events that contributed new nuclei to the solar system and on the general circumstances of the Sun's birth. In this paper we present a rudimentary model that attempts to reconcile the abundances of ten short-lived radioactivities in the early solar system. In broad outlines, the picture requires 1) that Type Ia supernovae maintained a steady ISM supply of 53Mn and 146Sm, 2) that the r-process events that slowly admixed new 107Pd, 129I, 182Hf, and 244Pu nuclei to the solar system occurred over an interval of several hundred million years prior to solar system formation, and 3) that a massive star, by injecting only material outside its helium-exhausted core into the proto-solar nebula, contributed 26Al, 36Cl, 41Ca, 60Fe, and 182Hf no more than one million years prior to the Sun's birth. In this picture, the live 182Hf present in the early solar system was not due to r-process production but rather to a fast s-process in helium or carbon burning shell in the massive star. We conclude with a possible chemical-memory explanation for the putative 53Cr/52Cr gradient in the solar system. Solar energetic particles (SEPs) provide a sample of the Sun from which solar composition may be determined. Using high-resolution measurements from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS) onboard NASA’s Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft, we have studied the isotopic composition of SEPs at energies ≥20 MeV/nucleon in large SEP events. We present SEP isotope measurements of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni made in 49 large events from late 1997 to the present. The isotopic composition is highly variable from one SEP event to another due to variations in seed particle composition or due to mass fractionation that occurs during the acceleration and/or transport of these particles. We show that various isotopic and elemental enhancements are correlated with each other, discuss the empirical corrections used to account for the compositional variability, and obtain estimated solar isotopic abundances. We compare the solar values and their uncertainties inferred from SEPs with solar wind and other solar system abundances and find generally good agreement.  相似文献
