Three recent studies in the theory of micropulsations are described. Attention is given to the behaviour of the signal below the magnetosphere in the ionosphere and atmosphere, to the field line resonance problem and to hot plasma effects on magnetospheric hydromagnetic waves. In each case recent relevant observations are discussed.  相似文献

The Juno Waves Investigation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Jupiter is the source of the strongest planetary radio emissions in the solar system. Variations in these emissions are symptomatic of the dynamics of Jupiter’s magnetosphere and some have been directly associated with Jupiter’s auroras. The strongest radio emissions are associated with Io’s interaction with Jupiter’s magnetic field. In addition, plasma waves are thought to play important roles in the acceleration of energetic particles in the magnetosphere, some of which impact Jupiter’s upper atmosphere generating the auroras. Since the exploration of Jupiter’s polar magnetosphere is a major objective of the Juno mission, it is appropriate that a radio and plasma wave investigation is included in Juno’s payload. This paper describes the Waves instrument and the science it is to pursue as part of the Juno mission.  相似文献

The different types of magnetic pulsations occurring during magnetospheric substorms are analysed into the concept of polar substorms recently described in detail by Akasofu (1968). Special attention is thus paid, to the simultaneous occurrence of different types of micropulsations at different places around the earth, during the development of a substorm. Time lags between the appearance of micropulsations and other geophysical effects of the substorm are of fundamental importance in this respect. Relationships between the occurrence or spectral shape of micropulsations and the state of the magnetosphere, as determined by satellite measurements are also of interest. Recent theoretical studies about the origin of these micropulsations are reviewed: natural h.m. emissions are directly linked to the thermal plasma density, the high energetic particle fluxes and pitch angle distributions in the far magnetosphere (L 5–8). We can thus expect to be able to deduce some information about the changes of these quantities during substorms. New semi-quantitative work is reported, which tries to interpret the repetitive structure of SIP events in terms of thickness of the magnetospheric tail, and the frequency drift of IPDP's in terms of magnetospheric electric fields. The present knowledge about absorption and dispersion of hydromagnetic waves through the ionosphere or inside the submagneto-ionospheric guide is also stated, because not taking these effects into account could lead to misinterpretation of the data.  相似文献

The possibility of diagnostics of the interplanetary magnetic field using the data of ground observations of Pc3, 4 pulsations is investigated. Both empirical and theoretical foundations of this method are discussed. In the shorter-period range (Pc1, Pi1, Ipdp) the methods of qualitative diagnostics of non-stationary processes in the quiet and disturbed magnetosphere are considered. In conclusion, we shall briefly consider the problems, arising when estimating the amplitude of the hydromagnetic waves in the regions of generation.  相似文献

The aurorae are the result of collisions with the atmosphere of energetic particles that have their origin in the solar wind, and reach the atmosphere after having undergone varying degrees of acceleration and redistribution within the Earth's magnetosphere. The global scale phenomenon represented by the aurorae therefore contains considerable information concerning the solar-terrestrial connection. For example, by correctly measuring specific auroral emissions, and with the aid of comprehensive models of the region, we can infer the total energy flux entering the atmosphere and the average energy of the particles causing these emissions. Furthermore, from these auroral emissions we can determine the ionospheric conductances that are part of the closing of the magnetospheric currents through the ionosphere, and from these we can in turn obtain the electric potentials and convective patterns that are an essential element to our understanding of the global magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere-mesosphere. Simultaneously acquired images of the auroral oval and polar cap not only yield the temporal and spatial morphology from which we can infer activity indices, but in conjunction with simultaneous measurements made on spacecraft at other locations within the magnetosphere, allow us to map the various parts of the oval back to their source regions in the magnetosphere. This paper describes the Ultraviolet Imager for the Global Geospace Sciences portion of the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics program. The instrument operates in the far ultraviolet (FUV) and is capable of imaging the auroral oval regardless of whether it is sunlit or in darkness. The instrument has an 8° circular field of view and is located on a despun platform which permits simultaneous imaging of the entire oval for at least 9 hours of every 18 hour orbit. The three mirror, unobscured aperture, optical system (f/2.9) provides excellent imaging over this full field of view, yielding a per pixel angular resolution of 0.6 milliradians. Its FUV filters have been designed to allow accurate spectral separation of the features of interest, thus allowing quantitative interpretation of the images to provide the parameters mentioned above. The system has been designed to provide ten orders of magnitude blocking against longer wavelength (primarily visible) scattered sunlight, thus allowing the first imaging of key, spectrally resolved, FUV diagnostic features in the fully sunlit midday aurorae. The intensified-CCD detector has a nominal frame rate of 37 s, and the fast optical system has a noise equivalent signal within one frame of 10R. The instantaneous dynamic range is >1000 and can be positioned within an overall gain range of 104, allowing measurement of both the very weak polar cap emissions and the very bright aurora. The optical surfaces have been designed to be sufficiently smooth to permit this dynamic range to be utilized without the scattering of light from bright features into the weaker features. Finally, the data product can only be as good as the degree to which the instrument performance is characterized and calibrated. In the VUV, calibration of an an imager intended for quantitative studies is a task requiring some pioneering methods, but it is now possible to calibrate such an instrument over its focal plane to an accuracy of ±10%. In summary, very recent advances in optical, filter and detector technology have been exploited to produce an auroral imager to meet the ISTP objectives.  相似文献

Whistler-mode waves injected into the magnetosphere from ground sources (e.g., lightning discharge, vlf transmitters) are used to probe the distribution of ions and electrons in the magnetosphere. They also cause wave growth (vlf emissions) and precipitation of electrons. Bursts of X-rays (> 30 keV) and enhancements of D-region ionization are examples of precipitation effects caused by lightning-generated waves. Growing narrowband wave trains are triggered by manmade coherent waves. Growth rates of 100 dB s-1 and total growths up to 30 dB have been measured using 5.5 kHz signals transmitted from Siple Station, Antarctica. Another source of coherent wave input to the magnetosphere are the harmonics from commercial power line systems. Power line harmonic radiation may suppress triggered emissions or change their frequency-time slope. Exponential growth of narrowband emissions is explained in terms of cyclotron resonance between the waves and trapped energetic electrons, with feedback included. Applications of wave injection experiments include: (1) study of emission mechanisms, (2) control of energetic particle precipitation, (3) diagnostics of cold and hot plasma, and (4) vlf communications.  相似文献

We discuss the electromagnetic processes in the ULF range which are important for the coupling between the atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere (AIM). The main attention is given to the Pc1–2 frequency ranges (f≈0.1–10 Hz) where some natural resonances in the AIM system are located. In particular, we consider the resonant structures in the spectra of the magnetic background noise related to the Alfvén resonances in the ionosphere as a possible diagnostic tool for studies of the ionospheric parameters. We also discuss the self-excitation of Alfvén waves in the ionosphere due to the AIM coupling and the role of such waves in the acceleration of electrons in the upper ionosphere and magnetosphere. Precipitation of magnetospheric ions due to their interaction with the ion-cyclotron waves is analyzed in relation to the ionospheric current systems, formation of partial ring current, and the influence of the ionosphere-magnetosphere feedback on the generation of such waves.  相似文献

The IMAGE mission will be the first of its kind, designed to comprehensively image a variety of emissions from the Earth's magnetosphere, with sufficient time resolution to follow the dynamics associated with the development of magnetospheric storms. Energetic neutral atoms (ENA) emitted from the ring current during storms are one of the key emissions that will be imaged. This paper describes the characteristics of the High Energy Neutral Atom imager, HENA. Using pixelated solid state detectors, imaging microchannel plates, electron optics, and time of flight electronics, HENA is designed to return images of the ENA emitting regions of the inner magnetosphere with 2 minute time resolution, at angular resolution of 8 degrees or better above the energy of 50 keV/nucleon. HENA will also image separately the emissions in hydrogen, helium, and oxygen above 30 keV/nucleon. HENA will reject energetic ions below 200 keV/charge, allowing ENA images to be returned in the presence of ambient energetic ions. HENA images will reveal the distribution and the evolution of energetic ion distributions as they are injected into the ring current during geomagnetic storms, as they drift about the Earth on both open and closed drift paths, and as they decay through charge exchange to pre-storm levels. Substorm ion injections will also be imaged, as will the regions of low altitude, high latitude ion precipitation into the upper atmosphere.  相似文献

Direct imaging of the magnetosphere by instruments on the IMAGE spacecraft is supplemented by simultaneous observations of the global aurora in three far ultraviolet (FUV) wavelength bands. The purpose of the multi-wavelength imaging is to study the global auroral particle and energy input from the magnetosphere into the atmosphere. This paper describes the method for quantitative interpretation of FUV measurements. The Wide-Band Imaging Camera (WIC) provides broad band ultraviolet images of the aurora with maximum spatial resolution by imaging the nitrogen lines and bands between 140 and 180 nm wavelength. The Spectrographic Imager (SI), a dual wavelength monochromatic instrument, images both Doppler-shifted Lyman-α emissions produced by precipitating protons, in the SI-12 channel and OI 135.6 nm emissions in the SI-13 channel. From the SI-12 Doppler shifted Lyman-α images it is possible to obtain the precipitating proton flux provided assumptions are made regarding the mean energy of the protons. Knowledge of the proton (flux and energy) component allows the calculation of the contribution produced by protons in the WIC and SI-13 instruments. Comparison of the corrected WIC and SI-13 signals provides a measure of the electron mean energy, which can then be used to determine the electron energy flux. To accomplish this, reliable emission modeling and instrument calibrations are required. In-flight calibration using early-type stars was used to validate the pre-flight laboratory calibrations and determine long-term trends in sensitivity. In general, very reasonable agreement is found between in-situ measurements and remote quantitative determinations.  相似文献

The ultraviolet spectrograph instrument on the Juno mission (Juno-UVS) is a long-slit imaging spectrograph designed to observe and characterize Jupiter’s far-ultraviolet (FUV) auroral emissions. These observations will be coordinated and correlated with those from Juno’s other remote sensing instruments and used to place in situ measurements made by Juno’s particles and fields instruments into a global context, relating the local data with events occurring in more distant regions of Jupiter’s magnetosphere. Juno-UVS is based on a series of imaging FUV spectrographs currently in flight—the two Alice instruments on the Rosetta and New Horizons missions, and the Lyman Alpha Mapping Project on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. However, Juno-UVS has several important modifications, including (1) a scan mirror (for targeting specific auroral features), (2) extensive shielding (for mitigation of electronics and data quality degradation by energetic particles), and (3) a cross delay line microchannel plate detector (for both faster photon counting and improved spatial resolution). This paper describes the science objectives, design, and initial performance of the Juno-UVS.  相似文献

Plasma interaction at the interface between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere has been extensively studied during recent years. As a consequence various theoretical models have emerged. The impulsive penetration mechanism initially proposed by Lemaire and Roth as an alternative approach to the steady state reconnection, is a non-stationary model describing the processes which take place when a 3-D solar wind plasma irregularity interacts with the outer regions of the Earth's magnetosphere. In this paper we are reviewing the main features of the impulsive penetration mechanism and the role of the electric field in driving impulsive events. An alternative point of view and the controversy it has raised are discussed. We also review the numerical codes developed to simulate the impulsive transport of plasma across the magnetopause. They have illustrated the relationship between the magnetic field distribution and the convection of solar-wind plasma inside the magnetosphere and brought into perspective non-stationary phenomena (like instabilities and waves) which were not explicitly integrated in the early models of impulsive penetration. Numerical simulations devoted to these processes cover a broad range of approximations, from ideal MHD to hybrid and kinetic codes. The results show the limitation of these theories in describing the full range of phenomena observed at the magnetopause and magnetospheric boundary layers.  相似文献

Gas Turbine Engines (GTEs) are vastly used for generation of mechanical power in a wide range of applications from airplane propulsion systems to stationary power plants. The gas-path components of a GTE are exposed to harsh operating and ambient conditions, leading to several degradation mechanisms. Because GTE components are mostly inaccessible for direct measurements and their degradation levels must be inferred from the measurements of accessible parameters, it is a challenge to acquire reliable information on the degradation conditions of the parts in different fault modes. In this work, a data-driven fault detection and degradation estimation scheme is developed for GTE diagnostics based on an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). To verify the performance and accuracy of the developed diagnostic framework on GTE data, an ensemble of measurable gas path parameters has been generated by a high-fidelity GTE model under (a) diverse ambient conditions and control settings, (b) every possible combination of degradation symptoms, and (c) a broad range of signal to noise ratios. The results prove the competency of the developed framework in fault diagnostics and reveal the sensitivity of diagnostic results to measurement noise for different degradation symptoms.  相似文献

Our knowledge of the interplanetary medium is outlined and its frictionless interaction with the geomagnetic cavity, first discussed by Chapman and Ferraro, is described. An important feature of this interaction is the interplanetary field which is compressed and may possibly lead to the formation of a shock wave. The possibility of frictional interaction between the solar wind and the cavity is discussed; an effect which appears to cause friction is the instability of interpenetrating ion-electron streams. This effect will also cause strong heating and trapping of ions and the generation of electromagnetic waves. The theory of propagation of geomagnetic disturbances in the magnetosphere and ionosphere is reviewed, first in general terms and than for some of the various components of a geomagnetic storm.Sea-level disturbances are divided into stormtime (Dst) and other (DS) components and also into different phases and the experimental data is reviewed. Theories of Dst, including the ringcurrent theory and magnetic tail theory are discussed and compared. Attempts to explain the complex DS field comprise the magnetospheric dynamo theory and the asymmetrical ring-current theory; these are compared in the light of experimental evidence.Motions of plasma and field lines in the magnetosphere are discussed in general terms: there are motions which deform the field and there are interchange motions. The former are opposed by Earth currents; the latter are not. The two types of motion are coupled through ionospheric Hall conductivity. Theories of the DS field in terms of the two types of motion are described; in particular motions caused by frictional interaction with the solar wind are discussed. These motions cause a helical twist in the field lines which propagates into the polar ionosphere as a hydromagnetic wave. In the ionosphere the motions of the field lines drive currents (moving-field dynamo) which cause the DS field.Drifts of neutral ionization in the lower ionosphere lead to localized accumulations which play a vital part in storm and auroral theory: they cause polarization fields which change the DS current system; they react on the magnetospheric motions to cause particle acceleration and precipitation.Auroral morphology and theories are briefly reviewed; the solar wind friction theory, although far from complete may provide a start. Further development should take the form of determining ionospheric drifts, polarization electric fields and consequent magnetospheric effects.A brief discussion is given of some associated effects: growth and decay of belts of geomagnetically trapped corpuscules; increase in ionospheric absorption of radio waves and lower-level X-ray production, ionospheric storm and high-latitude irregularities, micropulsations, VLF and ELF radio emissions from the magnetosphere, atmospheric heating and wave generation.  相似文献

In this paper we present an initial survey of results from the plasma wave experiments on the ISEE-1 and -2 spacecraft which are in nearly identical orbits passing through the Earth's magnetosphere at radial distances out to about 22.5R e . Essentially every crossing of the Earth's bow shock can be associated with an intense burst of electrostatic and whistler-mode turbulence at the shock, with substantial wave intensities in both the upstream and downstream regions. Usually the electric and magnetic field spectrum at the shock are quite similar for both spacecraft, although small differences in the detailed structure are sometimes apparent upstream and downstream of the shock, probably due to changes in the motion of the shock or propagation effects. Upstream of the shock emissions are often observed at both the fundamental, f - p , and second harmonic, 2f p - , of the electron plasma frequency. In the magnetosphere high resolution spectrograms of the electric field show an extremely complex distribution of plasma and radio emissions, with numerous resonance and cutoff effects. Electron density profiles can be obtained from emissions near the local electron plasma frequency. Comparisons of high resolution spectrograms of whistler-mode emissions such as chorus detected by the two spacecraft usually show a good overall similarity but marked differences in detailed structure on time scales less than one minute. Other types of locally generated waves, such as the (n+1/2)f - g electron cyclotron waves, show a better correspondence between the two spacecraft. High resolution spectrograms of kilometric radio emissions are also presented which show an extremely complex frequency-time structure with many closely spaced narrow-band emissions.  相似文献

This paper reviews the principal results of direct measurements of the plasma and magnetic field by spacecraft close to the Earth (within the heliocentric distance range 0.7–1.5 AU). The paper gives an interpretation of the results for periods of decrease, minimum and increase of the solar activity. The following problems are discussed: the interplanetary plasma (chemical composition, density, solar wind flow speed, temperature, temporal and spatial variation of these parameters), the interplanetary magnetic field (intensity, direction, fluctuations and its origin), some derived parameters characterizing the physical condition of the interplanetary medium; the quasi-stationary sector structure and its connection with solar and terrestrial phenomena; the magnetohydrodynamic discontinuities in the interplanetary medium (tangential discontinuities and collisionless shock waves); the solar magnetoplasma interaction with the geomagnetic field (the collisionless bow shock wave, the magnetosheath, the magnetopause, the Earth's magnetic tail, the internal magnetosphere characteristics), the connection between the geomagnetic activity and the interplanetary medium and magnetosphere parameters; peculiarities in behaviour of the interplanetary medium and magnetosphere during geomagnetic storms; energetic aspects of the geomagnetic storms.  相似文献

It is now well established that both thunderclouds and lightning routinely emit x-rays and gamma-rays. These emissions appear over wide timescales, ranging from sub-microsecond bursts of x-rays associated with lightning leaders, to sub-millisecond bursts of gamma-rays seen in space called terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, to minute long glows from thunderclouds seen on the ground and in or near the cloud by aircraft and balloons. In particular, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs), which are thought to be emitted by thunderclouds, are so bright that they sometimes saturate detectors on spacecraft hundreds of kilometers away. These TGFs also generate energetic secondary electrons and positrons that are detected by spacecraft in the inner magnetosphere. It is generally believed that these x-ray and gamma-ray emissions are generated, via bremsstrahlung, by energetic runaway electrons that are accelerated by electric fields in the atmosphere. In this paper, we review this newly emerging field of High-Energy Atmospheric Physics, including the production of runaway electrons, the production and propagation of energetic radiation, and the effects of both on atmospheric electrodynamics.  相似文献

Ion cyclotron waves (hereafter ICW's) generated in the magnetosphere by the ion cyclotron instability of 10–100 keV protons are now known to be the origin of short-period (0.1–5 Hz) electromagnetic field oscillations observed by synchronous spacecraft and on the earth's surface. Observations of the various wave characteristics, including spectral and polarization properties that lead to the identification of generation and propagation mechanisms and regions in the magnetosphere are described with reference to ATS-6, GEOS and ground-based wave data and interpreted using cold plasma propagation theory. The presence of heavy ions (O+, He+) dramatically modifies ICW magnetospheric propagation characteristics giving rise to spectral slots and polarization reversals. These properties may be used in plasma diagnostics. Finally satellite-ground correlations and techniques for determining the magnetospheric source position of ICW's not seen at synchronous orbit but observed on the ground as structured Pc1 pulsations are considered.  相似文献

This paper reviews recent developments in the understanding of the solar-wind magnetosphere interaction process in which the interplanetary magnetic field has been found to play a key role. Extensive correlative studies between the interplanetary magnetic field and the magnetospheric parameters have in the past few years yielded detailed information on the nature of the interaction process and have made possible to follow the sequence of events that are produced inside the magnetosphere in consequence of the solar-wind energy transfer. We summarize the observed effects of the interplanetary magnetic field, its north-south and east-west components in particular, found in various domains of the magnetosphere — dayside magnetopause, polar cap, magnetotail, auroral zone —, and present an overall picture of the solar-wind magnetosphere interaction process. Dungey's reconnected magnetosphere model is used as a frame of reference and the basic compatibility of the observations with this model is emphasized. In order to avoid overlap with other review articles in the series discussion on the energy conversion process inside the magnetosphere leading to the substorm phenomenon is kept to the minimal.  相似文献
