The Halley Optical Probe Experiment (HOPE) on board the Giotto spacecraft has provided the first in-situ measurements, both of the dust and of some gaseous species, from inside the coma of the comet. The instrument has already been described /1/, together with first results /2/. The purpose of this note is to show how optical measurements can lead to in-situ information, how those were obtained during the 13–14 march 1986 Halley fly-by, and what is the status of the data analysis.  相似文献

Ground-based observations and in-situ measurements of the gas activities and coma structures of comet Halley have yielded many new insights to the expansion of atmospheric gas from the central nucleus. The first impression from these results is discussed in terms of present theoretical understanding of the different gas phenomena in the inner coma (r 104 km). The need for developing a new generation of theoretical models capable of describing the observed highly anisotropic coma activities with spin-modulation in the outgassing rate as well as short-term outbursts is stressed.  相似文献

ESA's cornerstone mission “ROSETTA” to comet 46P/Wirtanen will bring a 100 kg Lander (provided by an international European consortium) with a scientific payload of about 27 kg to the surface of the comet's nucleus. After a first scientific sequence it will operate for a considerable fraction of the cometary orbit around the sun (between 3 AU and 2 AU). The Lander is an autonomous spacecraft, powered with solar cells and using the ROSETTA Orbiter as a telemetry relais to Earth. The main scientific objectives are the in-situ investigation of the chemical, elemental, isotopic and mineralogical composition of the comet, study of the physical properties of the surface material, analyze the internal structure of the nucleus, observe temporal variations (day/night cycle, approach to sun), study the relationship between the comet and the interplanetary matter and provide ground reference data for Orbiter instruments.Ten experiments with a number of sub-experiments are foreseen to fulfil these objectives. In this paper we present the current status of the instrumental development and the scientific capabilities of each of the experiments.  相似文献

ESA's Giotto mission to Halley's comet is a fast flyby in March 1986, about four weeks after the comet's perihelion passage when it is most active. The scientific payload comprises 10 experiments with a total mass of about 60 kg: a camera for imaging the comet nucleus, three mass spectrometers for analysis of the elemental and isotopic composition of the cometary gas and dust environment, various dust impact detectors, a photopolarimeter for measurements of the coma brightness, and a set of plasma instruments for studies of the solar wind/comet interaction. In view of the high flyby velocity of 68 km/s the experiment active time is very short (only 4 hours) and all data are transmitted back to Earth in real time at a rate of 40 kbps. The Giotto spacecraft is spin-stabilised with a despun high gain parabolic dish antenna inclined at 44.3° to point at the Earth during the encounter while a specially designed dual-sheet bumper shield at the other end protects the spacecraft from being destroyed by hypervelocity dust impacts. The mission will probably end near the point of closest approach to the nucleus when the spacecraft attitude will be severely perturbed by impacting dust particles leading to a loss of the telecommunications link.  相似文献

From an analysis of the electron number densities and velocity distributions as observed at comet Giacobini-Zinner and comet Halley, it appears that in the so-called “transition region” of the coma electron impact ionization can exceed the nominal photoionization rate of H2O molecules but not by an order of magnitude. It is possible in localized regions where electron heating by ion acoustic waves and lower hybrid waves occurs, electron impact would become the dominant ionization (and dissociation) mechanism. The overall effect as limited by in-situ measurements of the neutral gas density distribution could be shown to be small, however.  相似文献

NASA’s Stardust mission collected dust from the coma of Comet Wild-2 on January 2nd, 2004, by direct capture into aerogel cells that flew through the dust coma at ∼6 km/s. Stardust collected several hundred comet particles >10 μm in size. These comet samples were delivered to Earth on January 15th, 2006. We developed a facility at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory (Upton, NY, USA) for the in-situ characterization of ∼10 μm particles collected in aerogel. These analytical instruments allow us to perform extensive chemical, mineralogical, and size-frequency characterization of particles captured in aerogel. These analyses are conducted without any invasive extraction, minimizing the possibility of contamination or particle loss during preparation. This facility was used to determine the chemical composition, the oxidation state, the mineralogy and to provide an indication of the grain size of the Wild-2 particles before they were removed from the aerogel. This information provides a catalog of particle types, allowing a more reasoned allocation of the particles to subsequent investigators based on a relatively detailed knowledge of the chemical composition and mineralogy of each particle. These measurements allowed a comparison of the chemical and mineralogical properties of the Wild-2 particles with other types of extraterrestrial materials, including interplanetary dust particles and meteorites. The success of in-situ analysis for Wild 2 particles demonstrates that synchrotron-based facilities will be important for the analysis of particles collected in aerogel on future earth-orbiting satellites and spacecraft.  相似文献

From the discrete spectra of the emissions from the comet in the frequency range from 30 to 195 kHz named CKR (Cometary Kilometric Radiation), movements of the bow shock at comet Halley are concluded, i.e., the observed CKR emissions can be interpreted as being generated and propagating from the moving shock. The motion of the shocks are possibly associated with time variation of the solar wind and of the cometary outgassings. By in-situ plasma waves observations using PWP (Plasma Wave Probe) onboard the Sakigake spacecraft, the characteristic spectra of the electrostatic electron plasma waves, the electron cyclotron harmonic waves, and the ion sound waves have been detected during the interval of the Halley's comet fly-by. Compared with the results of a Faraday cup observation and a magnetometer, it is concluded that these plasma wave phenomena are the manifestation of the ion pick-up processes. The ion pick-up processes are taking place even in the remote region within a distance range from 7×106 to 107 km from the cometary nucleus.  相似文献

In-situ space observations of dust in the solar system are seldom possible. On the opposite, remote observations of solar light scattered by dust are relatively easy to perform from Earth- or satellite-based observatories; the evolution of the polarization of light scattered by dust particles as a function of the phase angle may provide information on the physical properties of these particles. Unfortunately, since remote observations are integrated along the line-of-sight of the observer, they can hardly be used to determine local physical properties. We have precisely developed Optical Probe techniques to forge the link between the numerous remote observations and the unique in-situ measurements. A short review of the remote observations of light scattered by cometary dust is first presented. Then, the Optical Probe concept is analyzed. Finally, the OPE instrument, which had been designed to optically probe the inner coma of comet Halley is described; its limitations and its achievements during Halley and Grigg-Skjellerup encounters are discussed.  相似文献

Various experimental data acquired during the visit of Halley's comet in 1986 have shown that the amount of carbon produced due to photodissociation of parent carbon bearing species is not ample enough to explain the observations. This requires the presence of an additional source of atomic carbon. One of the possible source could be auroral-type activities resulting from the precipitation of high-energy "auroral electrons" of solar wind origin, the evidence of which have been inferred from many observations at comet Halley. We have developed a coupled chemistry-transport model to study the role of auroral and photoelectron impact as well as of chemistry on the modelling of carbon in the inner coma (< or = 10(4) km) of comet Halley. Our study suggest that electron impact dissociation of CO is the major source of carbon production in the inner coma, not the recombination of CO+ as suggested by earlier workers, while transport is the main loss process.  相似文献

The physics of using a radioastronomy receiver as an in-situ detector of plasma, and in some cases of molecules and dust grains is reviewed, and applied to ICE encounter with comet Giacobini-Zinner. In the comet's plasma tail, the receiver recorded mostly quasi-thermal plasma noise. The spectroscopy of that noise yields the density and temperature of the main (cold) electron population, and parameters of hot electrons. The absence of grain detection yields a quantitative upper limit on grain mass or flux. An additionnal diagnosis is provided by partial occultations of both the radio galactic noise and the terrestrial kilometric radiation. Implications for comparison with earth-based measurements are indicated.  相似文献

Remote optical observations of comets provide information only along the whole line of sight and require some assumptions to be interpreted. Due to the advent of cometary space missions, a two-step strategy has been defined to derive without any assumption spatial distribution and physical properties of dust by in-situ optical observations. First, an Optical Probe Experiment, suitable for a fast fly-by, should provide passive in-situ measurements in the direction of the approaching (or receding) comet near encounter; by suitably differencing such observations, the brightness and polarization per unit volume can be recovered along the trajectory of the spacecraft. Secondly, a Light Scattering Dust Analyzer, suitable for a rendez-vous mission, should permit the determination of the scattering properties of individual particles. Both experiments also provide a connecting link between non-optical in-situ measurements (from mass spectrometers or impact detectors) and remote optical observations.  相似文献

The work we present deals with the spectrometric measurements of VIRTIS instrument of the Comet P/Wirtanen planned for the Rosetta mission. This spectrometer can monitor (VIRTIS M channel: 0.250μm – 0.980μm; Δκ=20cm−1; 0.980 – 5.0 μm; Δκ = 5cm−1; VIRTIS H channel: 2.0 μm – 5.0 μm; Δκ=2cm−1) the nucleus and the coma in order to provide a general picture of coma's composition, the production of gas and dust, the relationship of coma production to surface composition and the structure and variation of mineralogy of the nucleus surface. During the mission the observation conditions of the spectroscopic investigation change due to different relative positions spacecraft/comet, and to the different illumination conditions of the surface at various distances of the comet to the Sun. The nucleus surface is continuously modified by the ice sublimation accompanied by gas and dust emission. Consequently the surface also its spectrophotometric properties changes and their monitoring can give a new insight. The important role of simulations is to predict the results of measurements in various experimental condition what, in the future, can help in interpretation of the measured data.

In this paper the first results of our simulation the radiance from the comet in the 0.25–5.0μm spectral range at two distances from the Sun (1AU and 3AU) are shown. The distance between the Rosetta orbiter and the nucleus surface as well as the sun zenith angles are taken into account according to the Rosetta mission phases. In fact the surface and coma properties vary along the comet orbit, and should be taken into account in our calculations. The optical parameters of the dust on the surface (e.g. reflectance) and in the coma (e.g. Qext) were calculated from optical constants of possible comet analogues. The thermodynamic parameters of the comet are taken from the models of comet evolution. Through this kind of modelling it is possible to identify the surface characteristics in spectra of the radiation from the surface of nucleus transmitted through the coma loaded with dust and gases.

Even if the “Rosetta mission” is postponed, with the consequence of a target change, we think that our idea and the method used for the simulations can be useful also for the new Rosetta target - the comet 67P/Churyumov Gerasimenko.  相似文献

Looking at the chance of the next apparition of the Halley comet in 1986, ISAS decided to send a first Japasanese interplanetary spacecraft for the study of cometary hydrogen coma and solar wind. The Planet-A spacecraft which carries VUV imaging camera and solar wind plasma analyser will be launched in August 1985 and flyby the Halley comet in early March 1986 with the distance of several million kilometers from the comet nucleus. This mission is not only self-consistent but collaborative with other space mission as well as earth-bound observations. In the present paper, the Planet-A mission to Halley is described with brief explanation of the spacecraft.  相似文献

Measurements made by the Energetic Particle Anisotropy Spectrometer (EPAS) on the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) spacecraft show distinct changes in energetic heavy ion properties at the transition between the pick-up and mass-loaded regions of comet P/Giacobini-Zinner. Travelling toward the comet nucleus, the ion flow is first deflected away from the comet-sun axis over a period of approximately 5 minutes. This is immediately followed by a broadening of the ion angular distribution over a comparable time and by a decrease in the ion bulk flow speed of about 100 km s−1. The ion energy distribution broadens across the transitions, and the energy spectrum becomes harder.  相似文献

With the advent of the NASA STEREO mission, we are in a position to perform unique investigations of the evolution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) as they propagate through the heliosphere, and thus can investigate the relationship between CMEs and their interplanetary counterparts, so-called interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs). ICME studies have been principally limited to single-point, in-situ observations; interpretation of the in-situ characteristics of ICMEs has been used to derive a range of ICME properties which we can now confirm or refute using the STEREO imaging data. This paper is a review of early STEREO CME observations and how they relate to our currently understanding of ICMEs based on in-situ observations. In that sense, it is a first glance at the applications of the new data-sets to this topic and provides pointers to more detailed analyses. We find good agreement with in-situ-based interpretations, but this in turn leads to an anomaly regarding the final stages of a CME event that we investigate briefly to identify directions for future study.  相似文献

The deduction of coma abundances, ultimately leading to the abundance of parent molecules escaping the nucleus of a comet, requires to study a very large number of physical phenomena. Those include excitation processes of the emission of the light, production and loss processes of coma species, interaction with the solar wind… etc. In this paper, as an example, we shall review our knowledge on carbon bearing species and attempt to estimate the C/OH abundance ratio in various comets. We shall reach the interesting conclusion that this parameter greatly varies from comet to comet. It will then be appropriate to discuss if this is the effect of an “aging” process or if this is due to a “primordial” difference among the objects under study.  相似文献

This contribution starts with a short overview on cometary dust modelling and then focuses on the application of coma modelling with respect to in-situ measurements of cometary dust and ground based observations. The fountain model, valid for the dynamics of small cometary dust particles, is discussed. Models using Keplarian theory for the motion of the dust particles are outlined and the ESOC coma model is presented. Some direct applications of this model to analyse the results of the recent spacecraft flybys of comet Halley, as dust flux profiles, particle ground tracks and envelope positions, are shown. To compare the model with ground-based astronomical observations, the utilization of the ESOC coma model for the generation of synthetic images is demonstrated and some future prospects of this technique are outlined.  相似文献
