Oriental Hornet workers, Vespa orientalis (Hymenoptera: Vespinae) were measured for their responses to changes in the direction of the gravitational field and this under both static and kinetic (centrifugal) conditions. The hornets can build a comb (oriented towards the gravitational force) when their multifaceted eyes are covered. Building activity is undertaken in the dark as well as by hornets that had been blinded or had eclosed in the dark and had never seen any light. If the frons plate of hornets is damaged, there is no or little building, and the comb direction is distorted. Hornets eclosing from and developing in combs subjected to centrifugal spinning build combs whose direction is affected both by rotation and by the resultant of the gravitational and centrifugal forces.  相似文献

Deep freezing of food and storage at −19°C is a standard conservation procedure in food technology. The lower limit of growth of bacteria in food is from about −5°C to about −8°C, whereas the reproduction limit of yeasts is 2 to 3°C lower. Storage temperatures above −10°C should therefore not be used. At −18°C, a commonly used storage temperature, no growth of microorganisms will occur. The microorganisms mainly found at the lower growth limit are Pseudomonas sp. and basidiomycete yeasts. The reduction in the number of microorganisms due to freezing, storage, and thawing is not of practical importance. Microbial enzymes, in particular lipases and proteases, are still active at −18°C. Therefore, the quality of raw products and good hygiene at the production site are most important.  相似文献

Spores of Bacillus subtilis (TKJ 3412), cells of Deinococcus radiodurans R1 (wild type) and conidia of Aspergillus ochraceus (strain 3174) have been UV irradiated (254 nm) in the dry state (3% relative humidity, argon) or in aqueous suspension at room temperature, at −55°C to −70°C and at −165°C to −170°C. The following effects have been analyzed: decrease in viability, occurrence of DNA strand breaks (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis) and production of DNA-protein cross-links (membrane filter method). The loss in viability is usually more pronounced at around −70°C than at room temperature, but it is lowest around −170°C. The kind of prevailing DNA damage varies from organism to organism. The amount of UV induced DNA-protein cross-link products steadily decreases with the temperature and is lowest at −170°C. The decrease in highly polymeric DNA by double strand breaks follows no universal pattern. The observed hypersensitivity of the three very different species at −70°C can therefore not be simply explained on the basis of the number of DNA lesions analyzed in the course of this work. We suggest that also the changing state of cellular water below and above about −130°C significantly contributes to the change in photosensitivity.  相似文献

We investigate the dark matter distributions in the central region of two clusters of galaxies (A1835 and MKW3S) using Chandra data. N-body simulations in the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model predict the dark matter distribution shows a cuspy dark matter profile: ρ(r) ∝ r, with in the range 1–2, while observations of dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies seem to favor the presence of a relatively flat core: 0 <  < 1. To investigate the dark matter distributions in the central region of clusters of galaxies, we analyze the Chandra data of A1835 and MKW3S with a deprojection method. We derive the mass profiles without the assumption of analytical models. We examine the inner slope of derived mass profiles assuming the dark matter profile is described with a power-law expression. The values of the slope are 0.95 ± 0.10 for A1835 and 1.33 ± 0.12 for MKW3S within the radius of 200 kpc. These are consistent with the result of the CDM simulations. However, within the radius of 100 kpc, the value of is less than unity for A1835 (0.47 ± 0.31). Our result implies that the central dark matter profile of some clusters cannot be described by CDM halos.  相似文献

This review examines adaptation of life to temperatures below −2°C, from a biophysical point of view and relative to the properties of water. Different metabolic processes have different lowest temperatures. The lowest established temperature for photosynthesis and growth seems to be about −17°C. The review discusses membrane lipids from Antarctic microbial systems, and the limits to longevity of life in the cold, with coverage of permafrost microbial systems. It is directed towards readers of many backgrounds and supplements an earlier survey (L. Finegold, Adv. Space Res. 6, 257–264, 1986).  相似文献

A spectrometer for the Halley's Comet Investigation after the VEGA Project is described in the present work. It consists of a telescope and three spectral channels: UV (120 – 290 nm), resolution Δ λ / λ = 170; VIS (280 – 710 nm), resolution Δ λ / λ = 170; IR (950 – 1900 nm), resolution Δ λ / λ = 70.

With the help of two-coordinate scanner, the secondary mirror of the telescope allows spatial scanning of the Comet with a frame 2°×1,5° with 105 different pixels.  相似文献

Observations of total ozone at low latitudes in Brazil have been made using Dobson spectrophotometers since 1974 for Cachoeira Paulista (23.1° S, 45° W) and since 1978 for Natal (5.8° S, 35.2° W). Annual averages, 12 months and 36 months running averages have been analyzed. Spectral analyses of the data revealed that the most important periods found (confidence level> 90%) were: for Natal, 2.5 years (93.1%, quasi-biennial oscillation-QBO) and 10 years (98,2%, possibly the solar cycle signal); for Cachoeira Paulista, 2.4 years (96.8%, QBO) and 8 years (99.6%). The difference in total ozone between maximum and minimum solar cycles were estimated, using yearly averages of total ozone. For solar cycle 21, 1.16% and 1.26% for Natal and Cachoeira Paulista were found; for solar cycle 22, a larger difference of 3.8% for Natal and 4.1% for Cachoeira Paulista were found. The corresponding variation in UV-B at 300 nm, using Beer's law, is 8–10% for C. Paulista and 4–5% for Natal, with maxima occurring during the minimum of the solar cycle.  相似文献

Laboratory measurements show that lichens are extremely tolerant of freezing stress and of low-temperature exposure. Metabolic activity recovered quickly after severe and extended cold treatment. Experimental results demonstrate also that CO2 exchange is already active at around −20°C. The psychrophilic character of polar lichen species is demonstrated by optimum temperatures for net photosynthesis between 0 and 15°C. In situ measurements show that lichens begin photosynthesizing below 0°C if the dry thalli receive fresh snow. The lowest temperature measured in active lichens was −17°C at a continental Antarctic site. The fine structure and the hydration state of photobiont and mycobiont cells were studied by low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM) of frozen hydrated specimens. Water potentials of the frozen system are in the range of or even higher than those allowing dry lichens to start photosynthesis by water vapor uptake at +10°C. The great success of lichens in polar and high alpine regions gives evidence of their physiological adaptation to low temperatures. In general lichens are able to persist through glacial periods, but extended snow cover and glaciation are limiting factors.  相似文献

The scientific rationale of the Solar Orbiter is to provide, at high spatial (35 km pixel size) and temporal resolution, observations of the solar atmosphere and unexplored inner heliosphere. Novel observations will be made in the almost heliosynchronous segments of the orbits at heliocentric distances near 45 R and out of the ecliptic plane at the highest heliographic latitudes of 30° – 38°. The Solar Orbiter will achieve its wide-ranging aims with a suite of sophisticated instruments through an innovative design of the orbit. The first near-Sun interplanetary measurements together with concurrent remote observations of the Sun will permit us to determine and understand, through correlative studies, the characteristics of the solar wind and energetic particles in close linkage with the plasma and radiation conditions in their source regions on the Sun. Over extended periods the Solar Orbiter will deliver the first images of the polar regions and the side of the Sun invisible from the Earth.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of stratospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) have been retrieved from moderate resolution lunar occultation transmission spectra measured by Scanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) on board the European Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT). These measurements were taken over the high southern latitude of 50°–90° during the period of 2003–2005. To assess the accuracy of the retrieved NO2 profiles, the SCIAMACHY nighttime NO2 profiles were compared with NO2 profiles retrieved from sunrise solar occultation spectra measured by the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiments II (SAGE II) using a photochemical correction model. The validation results show good agreement of SCIAMACHY lunar occultation NO2 with scaled HALOE and SAGE II profiles. The relative mean differences (rmd) with scaled HALOE profiles are within −13% to +5% and standard deviations (rms) of the relative differences are within 3–19% between 25 and 38 km. The rmd and rms with scaled SAGE II NO2 profiles are in the range of −9 to +7 and 10–17% respectively between 22 and 39 km.  相似文献

Under gravistimulation, dark-grown protonemata of Pottia intermedia revealed negative gravitropism with a growth rate of approximately 28 μm·h−1 at room temperature (20 °C). In 7 days, the protonema formed a bundle of vertically oriented filaments. At an elevated temperature (30 °C), bundles of vertically growing filaments were also formed. However, both filament growth rate and amplitude of the gravicurvature were reduced. Red light (RL) irradiation induced a positive phototropism of most apical protonemal cells at 20 °C. In a following period of darkness, approximately two-thirds of such cells began to grow upward again, recovering their negative gravitropism. RL irradiation at the elevated temperature caused a partial increase in the number of protonemal cells with negative phototropism, but the protonemata did not exhibit negative gravitropism after transfer to darkness. The negative gravitropic reaction was renewed only when protonemata were placed at 20 °C. A dramatic decrease in starch amount in protonemal apical cells, which are sensitive to both gravity and light, occurred at the higher temperature. Such a decrease may be one of the reasons for the inhibition of the protonemal gravireaction at the higher temperature. The observation has a bearing on the starch-statolith theory.  相似文献

Active longitudes play an important role in spatial organization of solar activity. These zones associated with complexes of solar activity may persist for 20–40 consecutive rotations, and may be caused by large-scale non-axisymmetrical components of the global magnetic field. These zones of the field concentrations are 20°–40° wide and during subsequent rotations tend to reappear at constant longitude or drift slightly eastward or westward. Since the magnetic field is the principle source of the variations of radiation on the solar surface the active longitudes affect the solar irradiance received at the Earth. In this paper I study connections between the active longitudes and irradiance variations using VIRGO/SOHO, KPO and WSO data, which covered the transition period from solar cycle 22 to cycle 23 and rising phase of cycle 23. The result of this investigation is that active longitudes are associated with increases of the total solar irradiance and are prime sources of enhanced EUV radiation and coronal heating.  相似文献

Two rocket experiments were carried out just before and after the polar night at Andoya (69°N), Norway to investigate transport of nitric oxide produced by auroral processes into the middle atmosphere and its influence on the ozone chemistry. Nitric oxide densities of (2–5) × 108cm−3 found in the 70–90 km region are one to two orders of magnitude larger than those at middle latitudes. The influence on ozone densities in the 70–90 km region due to such enhanced nitric oxide abundance is found to be insignificant as compared to that due to transport in the middle of February. The larger ozone densities found in February (in spite of longer sunlit duration) than in November in the 40–60 km region again support predominance of transport over photochemical loss.  相似文献

UVSTAR is an EUV spectral imager intended as a facility instrument devoted to solar system astronomy and to astronomy. It covers the wavelength range of 500 to 1250 Å, with sufficient spectral resolution to separate atomic emission lines and to form spectrally resolved images of extended plasma sources. Targets include the Io plasma torus at Jupiter, hot stars, planetary nebulae and extragalactic sources. UVSTAR will make useful measurements of emissions from the Earth's atmosphere as well. UVSTAR consists of a pair of telescopes and concave-grating spectrographs that cover the overlapping spectral ranges of 500–900 Å and 850–1250 Å. The telescopes use two 30 cm diameter off-axis paraboloids having a focal length of 1.4 m. An image of the target is formed at the entrance slits of two concave grating spectrographs. The gratings provide dispersion and re-image the slits at the detectors, intensified CCDs. The readout format of the detectors can be chosen by computer, and three slit widths are selectable to adapt the instrument to specific tasks. The spectrograph package has internal gimbals which allow rotation of ±3° about each of two axes. Dedicated finding and tracking telescopes will acquire and track the target after rough pointing is achieved by orienting the Orbiter. Responsibilities for the implementation and utilization of UVSTAR are shared by groups the U.S. and Italy. UVSTAR is scheduled for flight in early 1994.  相似文献

Solar heavy ions from the JPL Solar Heavy Ion Model have been transported into low earth orbit using the Schulz cutoff criterion for L-shell access by ions of a specific charge to mass ratio. The NASA Brouwer orbit generator was used to get L values along the orbit at 60 second time intervals. Heavy ion fluences of ions 2≤Z≤92 have been determined for the LET range 1 to 130 MeV-cm2/mg by 60, 120 or 250 mils of aluminum over a period of 24 hours in a 425 km circular orbit inclined 51°. The ion fluence is time dependent in the sense that the position of the spacecraft in the orbit at the flare onset time fixes the relationship between particle flux and spacecraft passage through high L-values where particles have access to the spacecraft.  相似文献

The differential rotation of the patterns of the large-scale solar magnetic field during solar activity cycles 20 and 21 is investigated. Compact magnetic elements with the polarity of the general solar magnetic field have larger speed of rotation than the elements with the opposite polarity. The surface of the Sun was divided by 10°-zones. In all of them the average rotation rate of the magnetic elements with negative polarity is little higher than that of the magnetic elements with positive polarity, except for 50°-zone of the south hemisphere and at the 10° latitude of the north hemisphere.

The rates of differential rotation for large-scale magnetic elements with negative and positive polarities have similar behavior for both cycles of the solar activity.

The rotation rate varies at polarity reversal of the circumpolar magnetic fields. For the cycle No 20 in 1969–1970 the threefold reversal took place in the northern hemisphere and variations of rotation rate can be noticed for magnetic elements both with positive and negative polarity for each 10°-zone in the same hemisphere.  相似文献

Daily Be-7 concentrations in air at the height of 15 m are continuously observed at 38°15.2′N, 140°20.9′E, between 2000 and 2001. The average concentration and the relative standard deviation were 4.0 mBq/m3 and 50% in 2000–2001, respectively. The Be-7 concentrations increased 2.5% with the decrease in the sunspot numbers by 6.7% for the term of two years. From the power spectral analysis, the periodicity of 26 days is shown for the daily Be-7 concentrations. The folding analysis indicates that the time variation of the Be-7 concentration is similar to that of the ground-based neutron counting rate, and the phase delay for the minimum portion of Be-7 concentration was roughly 8 days to the maximum sunspot number. These results indicate that the Be-7 concentrations in the air at ground level have 26 day periodicity as a component of time variations and the time variation is caused by the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays, which corresponds to the variation of the sunspot number due to the rotation of the sun.  相似文献

The double pulsar system, J0737–3039, provides a unique probe of a pulsar magnetosphere due to its edge-on viewing geometry, a tight orbit and a significant rate of advance of the angle of periastron. In this paper, we report on the changes in radio emission from the long period pulsar in this system, J0737–3039B, over a period of 9 months. Observations of this system with Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) show that the duration of the first bright phase of the pulsar centered at 210° orbital longitude from the ascending node is shrinking. These observations will be useful to constrain the proposed models for this system.  相似文献

The general characteristics of middle atmospheric thermal structure have been studied by making use of the Rayleigh lidar data collected over the period of about four years (1998–2001). Here, the data has been used from two different stations in the Indian sub-continent in tropics (Gadanki; 13.5°N, 79.2°E) and in sub-tropics (Mt. Abu; 24.5°N, 72.7°E). The observed monthly mean temperature profiles are compared with different model atmospheres (CIRA-86 and MSISE-90). We observed, the mean temperature profiles have closer agreement with MSISE-90 than CIRA-86. The temperature profiles measured by lidar and HALOE satellite overpass nearby lidar site are generally in agreement with each other. The systematic and statistical errors in deriving temperature are found to be uniform for both the stations, as 1 K at 50 km, 3 K at 60 km and 10 K at 70 km. The special features of mesospheric temperature inversion (MTI) and double stratopause structure (DBS) are also addressed for both the stations.  相似文献

Measurements and theory of diurnal and semidiurnal tidal oscillations between about 25 and 80 km are reviewed. At latitudes greater than about 30°, meridional (N-S) wind components are consistently in quadrature with and similar to the zonal (E-W) components. The tidal structures are interpreted as a superposition of quasi-steady higher-order modes excited in the troposphere by sources of limited extent (1,000–10,000 km). At latitudes less than about 30°, steady or quasi-steady diurnal and semidiurnal components are not necessarily the dominant components of the daily variation. At high latitudes diurnal phases generally show little change with height in comparison with observations at lower latitudes, in accord with the latitudinal properties of diurnal modes with positive and negative equivalent depths.  相似文献
