Measurements of the wave emission of the topside ionosphere made onboard the APEX satellite using the electric component of the wave field in the 0.1–10 MHz frequency band are presented. At middle latitudes a wave intensity decrease was observed in the broad-band spectrum of the electrostatic noise at the electron cyclotron frequency. It is shown that a break in the spectrum of electrostatic modes at the electron cyclotron frequency (the absence of the plasma eigen-frequencies) may be a cause of the observed effect. The increase of the intensity at the electron cyclotron frequency in the ionospheric trough and at latitudes above the trough region as compared to middle latitudes may be explained by the capture by plasma irregularities of the electromagnetic emission of the auroral electron fluxes.__________Translated from Kosmicheskie Issledovaniya, Vol. 43, No. 3, 2005, pp. 201–208.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Izhovkina, Prutensky, Pulinets, Kiraga, Klos, Rothkael.  相似文献

We consider the formation of small-scale nonstationary plasma structures in the region of relatively strong field-aligned electric currents. The formation of these structures has been shown to be associated with the density instability developed when the current velocity exceeds a critical value. The conditions for the development of this instability can be most favorable in the region of low-density plasma. Numerical calculations have been performed for the initial nonlinear stage of the structure development. The main parameters of the structure, i.e., the times of its formation and destruction, spatial scales, and electric field, have been estimated. The features of the structures are consistent with the existing data from space experiments in the region of auroral field-aligned currents of the Earth.  相似文献

We have considered variations in fields and particle fluxes in the near-Earth plasma sheet on the THEMIS-D satellite together with the auroral dynamics in the satellite-conjugate ionospheric part during two substorm activations on December 19, 2014 with K p = 2. The satellite was at ~8.5RE and MLT = 21.8 in the outer region of captured energetic particles with isotropic ion fluxes near the convection boundary of electrons with an energy of ~10 keV. During substorm activations, the satellite recorded energetic particle injections and magnetic field oscillations with a period of ~90 s. In the satellite-conjugate ionospheric part, the activations were preceded by wavelike disturbances of auroral brightness along the southern azimuthal arc. In the expansion phase of activations, large-scale vortex structures appeared in the structure of auroras. The sudden enhancements of auroral activity (brightening of arcs, auroral breakup, and appearance of NS forms) coincided with moments of local magnetic field dipolarization and an increase in the amplitude Pi2 of pulsations of the Bz component of the magnetic field on the satellite. Approximately 30–50 s before these moments, the magnetosphere was characterized by an increased rate of plasma flow in the radial direction, which initiated the formation of plasma vortices. The auroral activation delays relative to the times when plasma vortices appear in the magnetosphere decreased with decreasing latitude of the satellite projection. The plasma vortices in the magnetosphere are assumed to be responsible for the observed auroral vortex structures and the manifestation of the hybrid vortex instability (or shear flow ballooning instability) that develops in the equatorial magnetospheric plane in the presence of a shear plasma flow in the region of strong pressure gradients in the Earthward direction.  相似文献

稳态等离子体推进器(Stationary Plasma Thruster,SPT)工作时产生的高密度等离子体遇到其加速通道陶瓷器壁时,在陶瓷器壁与等离子体之间形成鞘层。离子会在鞘层电场作用下到达SPT加速通道器壁表面进而复合,而等离子体中的电子由于具有高能可跃过鞘层电场轰击器壁表面,从而产生二次电子发射效应。从器壁表面发射出的二次电子由于受到鞘层电场的排斥,导致其向等离子体源区移动,进而影响等离子体鞘层的特性。建立了考虑二次电子发射效应的无碰撞等离子体鞘层的一维流体模型,研究了二次电子发射对SPT加速通道鞘层特性的影响。计算结果显示,随二次电子发射系数增加,鞘层电势、离子密度、电子密度和二次电子密度增加,而离子速度降低,鞘层中离子密度始终大于电子密度。鞘层中二次电子绝大多数集中在器壁附近,随二次电子穿越鞘层厚度的增加,二次电子密度快速下降。  相似文献

The data of observations of plasma density in the large-scale ionospheric trough by the ion trap onboard the Kosmos-900 satellite on April 15, 1977, are presented. They enable one to understand both the general configuration and the fine details of the trough. There are sharp gradients of density (especially, in the subtroughs) superimposed on the less prominent variations of density in the main trough, which are characteristic of the average pattern of the trough. It was demonstrated that one of the possible mechanisms of forming the troughs(i.e., plasma cavities) is the electrostatic instability of plasma in the topside ionosphere.  相似文献

As a novel propulsion technology, ultrasonically aided electric propulsion (UAEP) offers a high specific impulse and a high thrust density. In this paper, the effects of extractor grid configuration on performance of a UAEP thruster have been investigated by both experimental studies and numerical simulation. Relationships between spray current and operation parameters, including applied voltage, propellant flow rate, and vibration power and frequency, are explored for different extractor mesh sizes and shapes. Numerical simulation is also carried out for a better understanding of the formation of capillary standing waves as well as the electric field distribution in the acceleration zone. Experimental results show that compared with a circular shaped extractor, a reticular shaped extractor is able to produce a higher spray current. The current density increases with a denser mesh, which agrees well with the numerical simulation results. This phenomenon indicates that optimizing extractors with appropriate shapes and sizes can be an effective way to improve the performance of a UAEP system. A performance evaluation based on hydrodynamic and electrostatic calculations indicates that the present UAEP system can produce a thrust competitive to that of the colloid thruster with an emitter array.  相似文献

The spatial–temporal variations in aurora and VLF emissions during an weak intensification in the auroral zone morning sector on December 30, 2011, have been analyzed. The event was accompanied by a negative bay (~70 nT) in the X component of the magnetic field at ground stations in northern Scandinavia. At the recovery phase of this bay, the precipitation zone moved and VLF emission frequency simultaneously increased over ten minutes, which may indicate that waves and precipitating electrons had a common source. VLF noise bursts in the 600–1000 Hz band with a characteristic modulation scale of ~10 s and the corresponding aurora intensifications localized in the ~100 km region were observed during the following ten minutes, which also confirms that recorded waves are related to electron precipitation. This correspondence of the pulsating aurora periods and VLF noise modulation has been revealed for the first time. The role of VLF wave generation processes during the cyclotron interaction with electrons in the magnetosphere and the propagation of these waves from the magnetosphere to the observation point are discussed.  相似文献

航天员在轨出舱作业时,其穿戴的航天服面临空间尘粒污染的静电吸附增强效应问题,空间尘粒污染会对航天员的健康及仪器设备的安全稳定运行造成威胁。文章分析了空间站–航天服静电起电模型,研究了污染物粒子带电机理及带电尘粒在电场作用下的静电吸附过程;在此基础上搭建空间站–航天服电场的静电吸附效应地面模拟装置,并开展了4种航天服表面典型材料对空间中尘埃粒子的静电吸附效应试验验证。通过对试验结果的分析,提出后续应在航天员出舱活动中设计静电消除装置、处理航天服主体材料表面保持航天服洁净等建议。  相似文献

The auroral kilometric radio emission (AKR) is the most powerful sporadic radio emission of the terrestrial magnetosphere. It was discovered in 1965 by Soviet scientists in the experiment onboard the Electron-2 satellite [1]. The AKR still continues to stay an object of a large interest and detailed study (see, for example, a review by Gurnett [2]). The mechanism of cyclotron maser instability proposed by Wu and Lee [3] is a commonly accepted mechanism of AKR generation. We have demonstrated the presence of powerful AKR simultaneously in both hemispheres of the Earth in the period from August 1995 to August 1997, including summer-winter periods, on particular examples of registration of this emission in [4] where the directivity and mechanism of the emission were studied. Since in that period AKR was observed in the vicinity of perigees of the satellite orbit in both hemispheres almost at every orbit (3.8 days), we have a possibility to trace in more detail the changes in the emission power from one orbit to another in 1996 during a deep minimum of solar activity.  相似文献

离子推力器的羽流是等离子体,等离子体的组成是带电粒子,这与传统的化学推进系统的羽流成分有很大不同,带电粒子有在卫星表面吸附的倾向,会形成羽流沉积污染。这种羽流沉积会改变卫星表面的吸收率和发射率,从而影响卫星的热控性能。为了预测离子推力器的羽流对卫星的热控性能的影响,建立了离子推力器羽流模型。所建模型采用了工程化离子推力器的在卫星上的布局位置和离子推力器的工作参数,模拟了离子推力器的正离子与中和电子束在工程化中分置的实际情况,使模型更为符合实际。通过数值模拟得到了离子、电子、中性粒子的空间分布,电场分布,得到了钼粒子在卫星表面的分布及沉积厚度,比较了模型计算的离子分布与实验获得的离子分布情况,说明了模型分析的正确性,给出了卫星表面热性能的变化及局部区域温升的最大包络可达二十多度的结果。  相似文献

A mathematical model of the high-latitude F-region, taking the ionospheric plasma convection into account, is used for modeling a response of the auroral F-region to irradiation by powerful high-frequency (HF) radiowaves. The model enables us to calculate the time variations in the profiles of the electron concentration, the velocity of positive ions, and the ion and electron temperatures in the part of a magnetic-flux tube moving over an artificial ionospheric heater under the action of a convective electric field. The modeling was carried out for a part of the magnetic flux tube intersecting the F-layer irradiated by the Norwegian heater at Tromsö when it is located near the midnight magnetic meridian. The calculations were made for the equinox conditions under the high solar and low geomagnetic activity. The results of our modeling show that substantial variations in the profiles of the electron temperature, the velocity of positive ions, and the electron concentration can be produced in the nighttime high-latitude F-layer due to HF heating. The perturbation caused by a 20 s rectangular pulse should exist for about 20 min at the level of the F-layer maximum. The disturbed plasma volume can leave the region irradiated by the heater and move away for over 500 km within the above-mentioned time period.  相似文献

The observational data on the plasma density and electron component temperature in the region of the geomagnetic equator in the ionosphere F layer are presented. The measurements have been conducted by scientific equipment onboard the Kosmos 900 satellite (on August 7, 1979). A plasma cavern was observed in this region. It is shown that the formation of the cavern may be related to the attenuation of the electrostatic plasma instability and plasma vortices in the upper ionosphere at the geomagnetic equator.  相似文献

Some issues concerning the influence of multi-ion composition of plasma on the spectrum of ultralow frequency (ULF) oscillations in the magnetosphere are analyzed. Main emphasis is made on the effects that are perceptible by analyzing the results of observations of ULF oscillations. The resonator confining ion cyclotron waves in the equatorial zone high above the Earth is considered, as well as the near-equatorial waveguide existing under the plasmasphere arch and canalizing magnetosonic waves in the azimuth direction. It is shown that the very existence of the ion-cyclotron resonator would be impossible, if only one species of ions were contained in plasma. It is emphasized that the problem of excitation of magnetosonic waves with harmonics of the gyrofrequency of O+ needs further investigation. The effect of heavy ions on the spectrum of Alfvén oscillations of the magnetosphere is considered. Some arguments are presented giving evidence that existence of alpha-particles in the solar wind leads to an asymmetry of the spectrum of magnetosonic oscillations in front of the Earth’s bow shock. Anomalously large asymmetry is expected at immersion of the Earth into the “plasmasphere” of the flare-associated stream of solar plasma. The general conclusion is made that even a small admixture of heavy ions can have a substantial effect on the spectrum of ULF oscillations.  相似文献

A cause of the instability of equilibrium of plasma ion composition is discussed and exemplified by the data on a burst of amplitudes of small-scale plasma irregularities in the plasmaspheric transition region during an evening launch of the Vertikal'-10 rocket. This burst is accompanied by a simultaneous decrease in the average plasma density at altitudes of 700–1100 km. Specific features of the observed events are compared to postsunset incoherent scatter radar observations of the ion diffusion flux density. It is demonstrated that the instability is caused by peculiarities of the protonosphere–ionosphere interaction associated with a sharp difference between thermal conditions of the ionospheric and protonospheric air shortly after sunset. The induced nonuniformity of postsunset cooling of the protonospheric–ionospheric plasma causes density irregularities in ion diffusion fluxes and generates local bunches of heavy ions, which are usually only a minor impurity to lighter ions. As a result, conditions are created that are favorable for the nondissipative accumulation of potential energy for the mutual opposition of two or more groups of ions with different masses and for the subsequent release of this energy by a threshold excitation of impurity-driven plasma instabilities.  相似文献

A dispersion equation is derived for small disturbances of the magnetohydrodynamic type in optically transparent plasma with cosmic abundance of elements. The electron heat conductivity along the magnetic field and proton heat conductivity across the field are taken into account. It is shown that entropy waves increase exponentially in wide ranges of temperatures and densities of the cosmic plasma. Manifestations of instability of the entropy waves in the cosmic plasma are discussed.  相似文献

Results of two-year (August 1995–July 1997) continuous observations of the auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) in the AKR-X experiment on board the high-apogee Interball-1 satellite are presented. Observations were carried out in the minimum of solar activity in a frequency range of 100–1500 kHz. The most effective detections of AKR occurred near the maximum of its spectrum at a frequency of 252 kHz and also at a frequency of 500 kHz. The data obtained made it possible to study in more detail the character of AKR global directivity, its frequency dependence, and some other parameters of the emission. These data are interpreted qualitatively in the context of the emission mechanism caused by cyclotron maser instability.  相似文献

In the framework of the approximation of geometric optics, the peculiarities of VLF-wave propagation in the Earth’s ionosphere and magnetosphere during the creation of large-scale artificial plasma irregularities by heating facilities such as HAARP and “Sura” in the ionosphere are studied. For calculation of ray trajectories, the profile of the concentration and ion composition of plasma is taken by calculating the SAMI2 ionospheric model, which was modified to take the influence on the ionosphere of the HF emissions of heating facilities into account. As a result of the influence of the heating facilities on the ionosphere, a region could occur with an increased plasma concentration that is stretched out along the geomagnetic field (up to heights on the order of the Earth’s radius) with small dimensions across the field (~1°). The ray trajectories of waves that propagate from heights of about 100 km from different initial points in the region where such a disturbance has been created with different initial inclination angles of the wave normal are studied in this paper. Both lightning discharges and modulated HF heating of the ionosphere could be the sources of such waves. It is shown on the basis of the performed analysis that the presence of such disturbances in density can lead to a substantial changes in wave-propagation trajectories, in particular, to efficient channeling of VLF waves in the disturbance region and an increase in the interval of the initial propagation angles of waves, which can reach the ionosphere in the opposite hemisphere.  相似文献

A methodology of the physical modeling of radiation electrification of the leeward surfaces of the materials used to construct space vehicles by auroral electrons, when the vehicles are flown supersonically around by the ionospheric plasma at low and middle heights, is developed. Based on laboratory modeling, numerical experiments, and in situ observations, the dependencies of charging levels and equilibrium potentials on the ratio of the auroral electron density to the positive ions in the near wake behind the body and in the undisturbed plasma are determined.  相似文献

The minimal scale of the Alfvénic turbulence transverse to the external magnetic field in the topside auroral ionosphere is investigated using electric field observations of the FAST spacecraft (the resolution 512 s–1). The events in which the power law form of the electric fluctuation spectra with a 2.0–2.5 slope (typical of Alfvénic turbulence) remains unchanged down to acoustic gyroradius ρs or ion gyroradius ρi local values are illustrated for the first time. In this case, the character of spectrum variation does not change at the electron inertial length λe, which is much larger than ρs and ρi for FAST altitudes (apogee ~4000 km). We have tried to explain this experimental fact by consideration of the known scenarios of the appearance of a small transverse scale in an Alfvénic perturbation. It has been noted that the effects of front steepening in an inertial Alfvén wave with a finite amplitude, which propagates at an angle smaller than (me/mi)1/2 with respect to the transverse direction, can result in small transverse scales comparable with acoustic gyroradius appearing in a perturbation.  相似文献
