The nucleus of an active comet, such as comet Halley near its perihelion, produces large quantities of gas and dust. The resulting cometary atmosphere, or coma, extends more than a million kilometers into space, where it interacts with the solar wind. An “induced” cometary magnetosphere is a consequence of this interaction. Cometary ion pick-up and mass loading of the solar wind starts to take place at very large cometocentric distances. Eventually this mass loading leads to the formation of a weak cometary bow shock. Even closer to the nucleus, collisional processes, such as ion-neutral chemistry, become important. Other features of the magnetosphere of an active comet include a magnetic barrier, a magnetotail, and a diamagnetic cavity near the nucleus. X-ray emission from comets is produced by the interaction of the solar wind with cometary neutrals and this topic is also discussed. A broad review of the cometary magnetosphere will be given in this paper.  相似文献

No cometary nucleus has ever been observed directly. A model is deduced from ground-based and space data on cometary atmospheres. The main features of the chemical composition of cometary nuclei and the estimation of their sizes are described. The treatment of the process of vaporization of dusty ice shows, contrary to widespread opinion, that the islands on the non-volatile porous mantle are formed, not in perihelion but at large heliocentric distances and on the coldest parts of a nucleus. It is shown that the mantle does not disappear when the comet approaches the Sun, as it is often supposed, but is fluidized. The proposed model can give a number of properties of cometary nuclei but some of them can be established by direct space methods only. Such properties are the masses, the rotational velocities, the homogeneity of the dust-ice mixture, the internal structure, the power of the internal sources of energy.  相似文献

In our current understanding, active cometary nuclei comprise a volatile-depleted outer crust covering a mixture of dust and ices. During each perihelion passage the thermal wave penetrates the crust and sublimates a portion of these ices, which then escape the nucleus, dragging with them dust particles that replenish the coma and dust tail. The flux of released gases is likely to vary as a complex function of solar distance, nucleus structure, spin rate, etc. It has been previously hypothesised that at some point a fluidised state could occur, in which the gas drag is approximately equal to the weight of overlying dust and ice grains. This state is well understood and used in industrial processes where extensive mixing of the gas and solid components is desired. The literature on fluidisation under reduced gravity and pressure conditions is here reviewed and published relations used to predict the conditions under which fluidisation could occur in the near-surface of a cometary nucleus.  相似文献

Thermal stresses due to temperature differences between the cometary surface and the core have been calculated for different models of cometary nuclei. It is shown, that for comets on P/Halley-type orbits thermomechanical stresses exceed the (cohesive) strength of water ice near to the cometary surface. Consequently, there should be cracks on cometary surfaces. The existence of line structures on the surface of P/Halley, which might be due to thermomechanical cracks, is demonstrated on the basis of VEGA-images from the surface of P/Halley.  相似文献

The Comet Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) mission is the next step in the exploration of comets as well as the first of NASA's new generation of spacecraft for primitive body and outer-planet missions. If launched in September 1992, CRAF will fly by one or two asteroids en route to a rendezvous with P/Tempel 2 in December, 1996. The post-rendezvous mission profile includes: (1) a reconnaissance phase to assess the cometary environment and to determine the mass of the nucleus; (2) a nucleus observation phase, lasting over a year, with emphasis on determining the physical and chemical properties of the nucleus and the changes associated with the onset of cometary activity; and (3) a perihelion phase with emphasis on studying the nature and dynamics of the dust, gas, and plasma in the coma and tail.  相似文献

The original presence on cometary nuclei of frozen volatiles such as methane, ammonia and water makes them ideal sites for the formation and condensed-phase polymerization of hydrogen cyanide. We propose that the non-volatile black crust of comet Halley consists largely of such polymers. Dust emanating from Halley's nucleus, contributing to the coma and tail, would also arise partly from these solids. Indeed, secondary species such as CN have been widely detected, as well as HCN itself and particles consisting only of H, C and N. Our continuing investigations suggest that the yellow-orange-brown-black polymers are of two types: ladder structures with conjugated -C=N- bonds, and polyamidines readily converted by water to polypeptides. These easily formed macromolecules could be major components of the dark matter observed on the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, as well as on outer solar system bodies such as asteroids, moons and other comets. Implications for prebiotic chemistry are profound. Primitive Earth may have been covered by HCN polymers either through cometary bombardment or by terrestrial happenings of the kind that brought about the black crust of Halley. The resulting proteinaceous matrix could have promoted the molecular interactions leading to the emergence of life.  相似文献

Measurements of the thermal emission from the cometary dust coma can be used to derive the rate of dust production from the nucleus as well as the size distribution of absorbing grains. More than ten short-period comets have now been observed in the infrared over a wide range in heliocentric distance. Dust production rates are derived for these comets based on theoretical models of the thermal emission from small absorbing grains and calculations of dust grain velocities. The mean size and albedo of the dust grains is similar in these comets, with the exception of Comet Crommelin, which seems to have had larger, darker grains.  相似文献

A better understanding of cometary dust optical properties has been derived from extensive observations of comet Halley, complemented by other cometary observations at large phase angles and/or in the infrared. Also, further analysis of IRAS observations and improvements in inversion techniques for zodiacal light have led to some progress in our knowledge of interplanetary dust.

Synthetic curves for phase angle dependence of intensity and polarization are presented, together with typical albedo values. The results obtained for interplanetary dust are quite reminiscent of those found for comets. However, the heterogeneity of the interplanetary dust cloud is demonstrated by the radial dependence of its local polarization and albedo; these parameters are also found to vary with inclination of the dust grains' orbits with respect to the ecliptic. Such results suggest drastic alterations with temperature in the texture of cometary dust, and would favor an important asteroidal component in the zodiacal cloud.  相似文献

Based on the computed equilibrium temperature of evaporating dirty water-ice grains, dirty water-ice halo is examined, taking into account of a size dependence of terminal velocity of dust at P/Halley. It is found that due to an enhanced grain's temperature caused by dirtiness, icy halo cannot extend over 100 km from the nucleus when comet approaches inside a solar distance r of 1 AU. Therefore, it is unlikely that the ice bands in the near infrared wavelengths could be detected in the cometary coma at r<1 AU.  相似文献

From the discrete spectra of the emissions from the comet in the frequency range from 30 to 195 kHz named CKR (Cometary Kilometric Radiation), movements of the bow shock at comet Halley are concluded, i.e., the observed CKR emissions can be interpreted as being generated and propagating from the moving shock. The motion of the shocks are possibly associated with time variation of the solar wind and of the cometary outgassings. By in-situ plasma waves observations using PWP (Plasma Wave Probe) onboard the Sakigake spacecraft, the characteristic spectra of the electrostatic electron plasma waves, the electron cyclotron harmonic waves, and the ion sound waves have been detected during the interval of the Halley's comet fly-by. Compared with the results of a Faraday cup observation and a magnetometer, it is concluded that these plasma wave phenomena are the manifestation of the ion pick-up processes. The ion pick-up processes are taking place even in the remote region within a distance range from 7×106 to 107 km from the cometary nucleus.  相似文献

In March 1985 ESA's GIOTTO spacecraft will fly by P/Halley's nucleus at a distance of a few hundred kilometres. The near nucleus dust environment the probe will traverse poses a hazard with respect to physical damage as well as to attitude disturbance with the possible loss of ground station contact. To predict S/C survivability and dust impact rates for the experiments, a model of the spatial distribution of the dust in the nucleus' vicinity is required. In the ‘dynamic’ model, the local spatial dust density is derived from exact expressions for the dust particle dynamic motion. The model has been implemented in a software system which allows for fast simulations of a cometary fly-by.  相似文献

The IKS infrared spectro-photometer will fly on board the VEGA platforms. It is designed to characterize the size, temperature and emissivity of the Comet Halley nucleus, to identify the major gaseous components of the inner coma and to detect the emission of the cometary grains. This paper presents the “calibration” experiments required to reduce the raw data: (i) absolute wavelength calibration of the filter wheels; (ii) modeling of the internal signal, as a function of the temperature of the different sub-systems; (iii) absolute and spectral responsivities of each of the spectrometric and photometric channels, as a function of the wavelength and position of the source in the field of view. Finally, we shall indicate the expected S/N ratios.  相似文献

We discuss the contributions of cosmic rays and imbedded radionuclides to the absorbed doses and the chemistry in a cometary nucleus. Some of recently made observations during the close encounter with comet Halley are considered in the light of radiation dosimetry and chemistry.  相似文献

The irradiation of grains and/or ices by particles from solar or stellar winds, as well as cosmic rays, induces the synthesis of molecular species. We have shown by in-situ infrared spectroscopy of irradiated samples that this chemistry may be responsible for the presence of organic compounds in a large variety of astrophysical sites such as: lunar and asteroidal regoliths, cometary nucleus, rings and satellites of outer planets, circumstellar shells, interstellar clouds. We present our experimental results concerning the nature and efficiency of C and N irradiation chemistries, and give plausible astrophysical implications.  相似文献

Observations of the distribution and evolution of a number of the major constituents of the neutral coma (CN, C2, CH, O, H, Na) of Comet Halley were made during two observing periods, each of 3 weeks duration, from the Table Mountain Observatory, California. The first period was pre-perihelion, in late November/December 1985. The second period, from Feb 28 to March 22 1986, covered the five close spacecraft encounters with Halley, and when ICE flew some 20 M Km upstream of Halley. Sodium emission was recorded in early Dec 1985 from the near-nuclear region at a heliocentric distance of 1.4 AU, an observation confirmed with the UCL Doppler Imaging system. The CN coma could be detected to an outer diameter of more than 4M Km in Dec 1985, and 5 – 6M Km in early March 1986, allowing the production of heavy cometary pick-up ions to be estimated. Observations of the cometary ion coma (H2O+ and CO+ ions) showed considerable variability from day to day, particularly during the period of the spacecraft encounters. These observations have been used, in conjuction with the neutral coma data, to map the flow field of cometary ions. In early Dec. 1985, Halley developed a traditional “type I” ion tail, which persisted until late April 1986. It has also been possible to evaluate the ion flow fields within the narrow core of the ion tail, and in the surrounding diffuse, low density, regions populated by pick-up and extracted cometary ions, and by slowed solar wind ions. Tail disconnection events were observed on several occasions, particularly between the VEGA 2 and GIOTTO encounters, and with a highly spectacular event on March 19 1986.  相似文献

Modelling of the cometary coma with respect to the distribution of dust particles within the coma and tail have been performed by a number of authors /1,2,3/. Applications of the Divine model using a program coded for the Giotto DIDSY sensors have also been made to calculate expected sensor response of the instrument and spacecraft impact rates /4/. For a chosen mass of ~ 10?10g we use the Divine Reference model /1/ to investigate the effect on the mass envelope of i) a velocity spread in dust particle ejection; and ii) a variation in the particle type. The results show that effects i) and ii) lead to a smoothing-out of the anticipated peak flux at an envelope boundary. A conceptual model to follow the formation and development of dust jets is also presented and effects illustrated for various nucleus rotation periods.  相似文献

The trapping of various gases by water ice at low temperatures (20-80K) and their release from the ice upon warming, was studied experimentally. The results of these experiments, together with a computation of the thermal evolution of a cometary nucleus, can explain the gas and dust jets which were observed to emanate from the nucleus of P/Halley. The experimental results are important also to the gas content of Titan.  相似文献

Complex numerical model of young meteor stream formation taking into account reactive deceleration of cometary nucleus and its form change in the process of stream formation is discussed. The model made it possible to predict the existence of fine and superfine structures for young meteor streams, the characteristics of which agree with the observational data on the Draconid and Leonid meteor showers.  相似文献

An overview is presented of electrons, protons and heavier ions (E > 20 keV) recorded by the energetic particle detector EPONA in the Comet Halley environment, 12–15 March, 1986. Pick-up ions were detected at distances of up to at least 7.5 × 106 km from the nucleus. Estimates of the energies that typical cometary ions may be expected to acquire from the solar wind pertaining at Encounter show that the pick-up process is insufficient to account for the energies of the particles detected. An additional mechanism must thus be postulated to account for the observed particle signatures. Preliminary correlations with magnetic and plasma wave data from other instruments suggest that the presence of MHD turbulence at several million kilometers upstream of the bowshock may have contributed to the acceleration of the first pick-up ions observed. The bowshock boundary (inbound) does not appear to have constituted a location where particle acceleration to high energies took place. Downstream of the shock boundary, hardening of the energy spectrum and the development of less anisotropic particle streaming was observed to occur when the spacecraft was in a turbulent environment 1 × 106 km from the nucleus. The waxing influence of mass loading as a mechanism for reducing energetic particle fluxes as well as the depletion of energetic ions due to their escape along open field lines and to charge exchange collision with neutrals in a progressively more stagnant solar wind, may be inferred in a regime (seen on the magnetometer data to be largely non-turbulent) traversed by the spacecraft from 5 × 105 km from the nucleus to within the magnetic pile-up region. A major burst of ions and electrons (not yet established to be of cometary origin) occurred when the spacecraft was close to the Contact Surface. A population of high energy electrons (from 180 keV to at least 300 keV) was detected for about one hour before Closest Approach and for several hours thereafter. Also an energetic beam of electrons was identified exiting from a location at about 1 × 106 km from the nucleus (outbound). Finally, differences between inbound and outbound particle signatures are described.  相似文献
