The stability of the flow between two vertical, infinite, rigid, coaxial cylinders held at different temperatures is analyzed by linear stability theory. For a Prandtl number of 22.8 and a radius ratio of 0.02, the flow is unstable to an axisymmetric perturbation at a critical Grashof number of 2150; the wave speed of the instability is comparable to the maximum velocity of the unperturbed flow. When the rigid outer cylinder-fluid interface is replaced by a crystal-melt interface which can change shape, two new modes of instability occur at lower Grashof numbers. There is an asymmetric instability with a critical Grashof number of 180 and an axisymmetric instability with a critical Grashof number of 460; for both of these modes the wave speed of the instability is several orders of magnitude smaller than the unperturbed flow velocity.These calculations were motivated by and are in general agreement with our recent experiments on succinonitrile. A long vertical cylindrical sample of succinonitrile was heated by an electrical current through a coaxial vertical wire so that a vertical melt annulus formed between the coaxial heater and the surrounding crystal-melt interface. Above a critical Grashof number of circa 200, a helical crystal-melt interface formed which rotated steadily about the cylinder axis; the wave speed was several orders of magnitude less than the base flow velocity.  相似文献

The ionospheric effects induced by the September 2017 storm have been exceptional compared to other events in the solar cycle 24. This paper gathers results of the ionospheric observations at the European middle latitude station Pruhonice. It consists of evaluation of ionospheric vertical and oblique sounding, Digisonde drift measurement, and data obtained from the Continuous Doppler Sounding System. We observed strong ionospheric response with an unusual stratification of ionospheric layers, Large Scale Traveling ionospheric disturbances, changes in electron density, and increase and oscillations in plasma drift velocity.  相似文献

Longitudinal distributions of post-midnight equatorial ionospheric irregularity occurrences observed by ROCSAT-1 (1st satellite of the Republic of China) during moderate to high solar activity years in two solstices are studied with respect to the vertical drift velocity and density variations. The post-midnight irregularity distributions are found to be similar to the well-documented pre-midnight ones, but are different from some published distributions taken during solar minimum years. Even though the post-midnight ionosphere is sinking in general, longitudes of frequent positive vertical drift and high density seems to coincide with the longitudes of high irregularity occurrences. Large scatters found in the vertical drift velocity and density around the dip equator in different ROCSAT-1 orbits indicate the existence of large and frequent variations in the vertical drift velocity and density that seem to be able to provide sufficient perturbations for the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability to cause the irregularity occurrences. The need of seeding agents such as gravity waves from atmospheric convective clouds to initiate the Rayleigh-Taylor instability may not be necessary.  相似文献

Balloons lead to the highest vertical resolution of air velocity data actually attainable from atmospheric soundings. However, the pendulum-like motion of the balloon-gondola system may significantly affect these measurements if the distance between balloon and gondola is large. This may prevent the study of the highest vertical resolution range obtained. Also, if not appropriately discriminated, these fluctuations could be confused with small scale or turbulent oscillations of the atmosphere. It is shown from simple energy considerations that horizontal and vertical wind velocity perturbations introduced in the observations by the pendulum motion may usually be comparable to typical measurements. Vertical velocity data that were obtained with an instrumented gondola in a zero pressure balloon, which typically reach the lower stratosphere, are analyzed and found to be in agreement with the above statements. The pendulum-like behavior in this sounding seems to be stimulated by the buoyant oscillation of the atmosphere.  相似文献

对澳大利亚Culgoora天文台射电频谱仪在太阳活动第23周峰年期间记录到的米波Ⅲ型爆发(20~420 MHz),与日冕物质抛射(CME)、Hα耀斑及相关事件进行了统计分析,发现米波Ⅲ型爆发与CME的关系没有Ⅱ、Ⅳ型爆发与CME的关系密切;米波Ⅲ型爆发发生的时间在CME之前25~30 min最多;72%的CME事件伴随长寿命的Hα耀斑.从这些观测特征出发,对米波Ⅲ型爆发、CME和Hα耀斑进行了定性的解释.   相似文献

We study the Propagation and damping properties of Alfvén gravity waves in the presence of the vertical magnetic field in the viscous solar plasma under influence of the background flow by deriving a fourth order dispersion relation in terms of the Doppler shifted frequency. We derive the dispersion relation under WKB and Boussinesq approximation. We study the damping of Alfvén gravity waves for the wave frequencies less than and greater than the Brunt-Väisälä frequency. We find that the Brunt-Väisälä frequency divides the frequency ranges where the weakly or strongly damped oscillations occur. The background flow exhibits a strong effect on weakly damped oscillations and a weak effect on the strongly damped oscillations. We also notice that the damping of both the strong and weakly damped oscillations depend on the Brunt-Väisälä frequency and wave number. The effect of the background flow is also being governed by the Brunt-Väisälä frequency and wave number. We also study the properties of gravity wave mode after filtering the Alfvén wave mode by minimizing the magnetic field and noticed that the background flow shows a very strong effect on the gravity wave mode.  相似文献

We present results of wind measurements near the mesopause carried out with meteor radars (MRs) at Collm (51°N, 13°E), Obninsk (55°N, 37°E), Kazan (56°N, 49°E), Angarsk (52°N, 104°E) and Anadyr (65°N, 178°E) from October 1, 2017 till March 31, 2018. The Collm and Kazan MRs are SKiYMET radars with vertical transmission and radio echo height finding, while the other radars operate with horizontal transmission and without height finding. We paid particular attention to the meridional wind variability with periods of 4–6 days and 9–11 days. The waves with these periods are seen as spots of the wave activity in the wavelet spectra and include oscillations with different periods and different discrete zonal wavenumbers. These wave packets successively propagate as a group of waves from one site to another one in such a way that they are observed at one site and almost disappear at the previous one. The 4–6 wave group includes planetary-scale oscillations (individual spectral components) which have eastward phase velocities and mostly zonal wavenumbers 2 and 3, and the vertical wavelength exceeds 70 km at middle latitudes. The source of the oscillations is the polar jet instability. The wave group itself propagates westward, and the amplitudes of wind oscillations are approximately 5–6 m/s as obtained from the wind data averaged over the meteor zone. The 9–11 day wave set propagates westward as a group and mainly consists of spectral components which have westward phase velocity and zonal wavenumber 1. Amplitudes of these wind perturbations strongly vary from station to station and can reach, approximately, 8 m/s. The vertical wavenumber is 0.014 km−1 as taken from the Kazan and 0.05 km−1 according to the Collm data. We obtained a global view on the waves by using the AURA MLS geopotential data. We found a good correspondence between wave features obtained from the MR wind measurements and the MLS data. To our knowledge, such a wave propagation of planetary wave in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region has so far not obtained much attention.  相似文献

Marangoni flow was induced in a thin disk of molten tin with an atomically clean surface by heating it from below in an ultra high vacuum apparatus. The radial distribution of temperature was measured and no temperature oscillations were observed. Strong mechanical disturbances introduced at a Marangoni number of about 4300 died out quickly with time indicating that the system was stable. Mathematical models indicate that strong flows in a two cell structure exist under the conditions studied, and that the velocity profile in the cell near the surface is of the bouindary layer type which varies rapidly with depth.  相似文献

The decay times of meteor radar echoes have been used for decades to investigate characteristics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. As the meteor echo decay time depends on background atmospheric parameters, in the present communication, we examine the seasonal variation of the vertical distributions of underdense meteor echo decay times with respect to echo strength. Observations from two similar radars located at two distinct geographical locations, Thumba (8.5°N, 77°E) and Eureka (80°N, 85.8°W) were used for the present study. Here, the radar received signal power is categorized into strong and weak echoes and vertical profiles of their decay times are constructed. It has been noticed that the monthly mean decay time vertical profile turning altitude (i.e., inflection point) varies in the range of 80–87?km of altitude depending on latitude. The turning altitude is observed at relatively lower heights in the winter than in summer at both the latitudes. The present analysis shows that the meteor decay time below the mean turning altitude follows a decreasing trend with decreasing altitude, which is quite distinct to the behaviour of ambipolar diffusion. It is also observed that there is a difference in mean decay time of strong and weak echoes below 90?km of altitude, which is very prominently seen at lower altitudes. This difference shows a seasonal pattern at high latitude, but does not show any seasonal variation at low latitude. The present results are discussed in light of current understanding of the meteor decay time.  相似文献

根据中国海南富克(19.3°N,109.1°E)三点GPS观测系统2007年3月至11月的观测数据,利用互相关方法分析了三站闪烁信号的时间延迟,得出了不规则体纬向漂移的基本特征.在中国海南地区,闪烁主要发生在春秋季节,夜间不规则体的纬向漂移速度以东向为主,大小在50~150 m/s之间;平均东向漂移速度随时间呈下降趋势.另外,在闪烁刚发生时,不规则体纬向速度起伏较大,这可能与不规则体的随机起伏以及等离子体泡产生时垂直速度较大有关.中国海南地区不规则体纬向漂移速度的这些基本特征与低纬其他地区的测量结果较为一致.  相似文献

Radial velocity measurements of the sun as a star using a resonant scattering spectrometer have been obtained at Izaña (Tenerife) during long observing seasons from 1976 to 1985. Its analysis shows that except for the global oscillations with periods shorter than one day there are stable signals with longer periods: at ∼13 days with mean amplitude of ∼ 3 m/s (it changes with the solar cycle) and another one of ∼ 15 m/s amplitude which shows a temporal variation of various years related to the solar cycle. The first signal has a partial explanation as an effect produced by the passage of active regions through the visible surface of the sun but it does not completely explain the observed signal. The second one, related to the limb shift, is probably due to changes in the convection zone in connection with the solar cycle.  相似文献

A large coronal transient took place on 8 May 1981. The transient was related to an M7.7/2B flare and was associated with at least two coronal type II bursts. The velocities of the type II bursts were in the range 1100–1800 kms?1, in excess of the transient velocity of 500–1000 kms?1. Two dimensional positions of the type II radio sources are available from both the Clark Lake and the Culgoora Radio Observatories. We carry out two dimensional MHD simulations of the event, taking into account the observed velocity, position, and size of the type II bursts. We simulate the multiple shocks observed during the event and their interaction, and discuss some results of the simulation.  相似文献

Results are presented from recent ionospheric modification experiments in which the EISCAT UHF radar measured the E-region temperature and density response to high power RF heating above Tromsø. A variety of electrojet conditions were encountered during these experiments. In particular, the electron drift velocity varied considerably allowing the heating efficiency of the RF heater to be investigated as a function of electron flow velocity. These observations constitute the first direct investigation of electrojet temperature modifications by high power radio waves and provide a test of a recent theoretical model in which the combined effects of RF heating and of natural plasma turbulence associated with the Farley-Buneman instability have been considered.  相似文献

The Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite Hakucho and Tenma observed the activity of the rapid burster MXB 1730-335 in 1979 and 1983. In the first observation from 8 to 22 August 1979, the activity began with rapidly repetitive type II bursts which are similar to those observed earlier. Then the energy per burst quickly increased and evolved to exhibit a long flat top or roughly trapezoidal shape. In the last phase, burst size became smaller and the activity returned to the short type II burst mode. In the second observation from 5 to 31 August 1983, the burster started to emit a train of bursts which aparently resemble to type I bursts with quasi-periodical occurrence of 74 ~ 90 minutes. In the second phase, there appeared long type II bursts of trapezoidal profiles and exotic long bursts. In the last phase, about 3000 rapidly repetitive short type II bursts were observed. The bursts with shortest intervals exhibited almost periodic features of 16 sec.The type II bursts in both observation evolved to the size E of ~ 6 × 1040 erg that is one order larger than ever observed. They were long bursts (τ ≦ 600 s) of flat topped (trapezoidal) shape and those of exotic profiles. Those type II bursts exhibited some kinds of quasi-periodicities, which implies the vibrations or instabilities of the mass accretion onto the neutron stars. The propagation of a strong cylindrical shock wave in an ideal gas with azimuthal magnetic field, and with or without axisymmetric rotational effects, is investigated. The shock wave is driven out by a piston moving with time according to power law. The ambient medium is assumed to have radial, axial and azimuthal component of fluid velocities. The fluid velocities, the initial density and the initial magnetic field of the ambient medium are assumed to be varying and obey power laws. Solutions are obtained, when the flow between the shock and the piston is isothermal. The gas is assumed to have infinite electrical conductivity and the angular velocity of the ambient medium is assumed to be decreasing as the distance from the axis increases. It is expected that such an angular velocity may occur in the atmospheres of rotating planets and stars. The shock wave moves with variable velocity and the total energy of the wave is non-constant. The effects of variation of the initial density and the Alfven-Mach number on the flow-field are obtained. A comparison is also made between rotating and non-rotating cases.  相似文献

Experimental inactivation cross sections are compared to vacancy production in inner shell (K-shell) of so-called strategic C, N, O atoms of the DNA: in a trial calculation, atoms on the DNA backbone or just contiguous to it are considered as strategic. Various processes are considered: ionization and electron capture by the primary particle, ionization by secondary electrons. The last phenomenon is shown to be important for highly charged and medium velocity ions. A strong similarity is observed between variations versus LET of inactivation and K-vacancy cross sections, especially with regards to LET values for which they maximize: for K-ionization these maxima occur when the ion impact velocity roughly matches the K electron velocity. It is shown that the "K-hypothesis" allows a quantitative fit of experimental inactivation cross sections if a 4% mean lethal efficiency is attributed to ion-induced K-vacancies in strategic C, N, O atoms.  相似文献

本文导出了声重波扰动与赤道电离层扩展F层相互作用的基本方程,并对数值模拟结果进行了讨论。结果表明当声重波扰动与Kavleigh-Taylor不稳定性共同作用于赤道F层时,将导致大尺度波状结构的Spread-F.其特征为以一定速度漂移的准周期不规则性,发展到后期伴有羽柱形状的bubble(电子密度低区)产生。这种现状的bubble可上升至F层顶部并发生倾斜。声重波波矢量的方向决定着羽柱的倾斜方向。这些结果与实验观测特征相符,说明声重波扰动不仅是大尺度Saread-F的触发源,而且对其整个形态发展过程起着重要的作用。   相似文献

A summary is given of the presentations at the COSPAR workshop on γ-ray bursts with some personal commentary on the contributions, the SN/GRB connection, and on the role of magnetic fields in γ-ray bursts and their afterglows. Of special interest were the accumulated arguments for strong collimation and associated reduction in the total required energy for γ-ray bursts. Significant discussion was also devoted to the issues associated with iron and metal lines in X-ray spectra. It is important to note that some of the afterglows seem to require ambient densities 1 g cm−3, rather incompatible with a massive star environment. Of associated difficulty is the fact that few, if any, afterglows seem consistent with the r−2 wind expected for a massive star model. There are reasons to think that if γ-ray bursts are associated with supernovae they are of Type Ic. This suggests that any wind present might be rich in carbon and oxygen, not hydrogen or helium. If γ-ray bursts are narrowly collimated, then the burst is only probing a small portion of any wind, perhaps just that time-dependent and isotropic structure directly along the rotation axis. The characteristics of “hypernovae” may be the result of orientation effects in a mildly inhomogeneous set of progenitors, rather than requiring an excessive total energy or luminosity. The recent event GRB 021004 provided a rich photometric and spectroscopic record and perhaps the most direct evidence yet for the association of a specific γ-ray burst with a massive star progenitor. If the magnetic field plays a significant role in launching a relativistic γ-ray burst jet from within a collapsing star, then the magnetic field may also play a role in the propagation, collimation, and stability of that jet within and beyond the star. The magneto-rotational instability (MRI) can operate under conditions of moderate rotation. This means that the MRI will be at work generating strong fields exponentially rapidly even as the disk of material begins to form and makes a transition from a non-Keplerian to quasi-Keplerian flow in the collapsar and related models.  相似文献
