Secondary radioactive isotopes that are used for the determination of cosmic-ray age have relatively short decay lifetimes. The measured abundance of these isotopes at low energies is representative of the cosmic-ray diffusion and the gas distribution in a region of a few hundred parsecs around the Sun. We show how to determine the local cosmic-ray diffusion coefficient in the Galaxy using the data on decaying cosmic-ray nuclei. Calculated surviving fractions of decaying secondary isotopes in diffusion and leaky box models are presented. The Anisotropy Telescopes (ATs) instrument, part of the COSPIN experiment on board Ulysses, measures fluxes and anisotropies of protons in the MeV range. We survey data from this instrument throughout the Ulysses mission, with particular emphasis on solar maximum, when large particle intensities were measured. The only significant fluxes detected by the ATs during solar minimum are those associated with corotating interaction regions. We focus on events characterised by very large first-order anisotropies, indicating beam-like streaming along the magnetic field lines, and also on times of unusually low and constant anisotropies. We describe the parameters associated with these events and put forward possible physical explanations of the extreme anisotropies observed. The heliosphere is bathed in the supersonic solar wind, which generally creates shocks at any obstacles it encounters: magnetic structures such as coronal mass ejections and planetary magnetospheres, or fast-slow stream interactions such as corotating interaction regions (CIRs) or the termination shock. Each of these shock structures has an associated energetic particle population whose spectra and composition contain clues to the acceleration process and the sources of the particles. Over the past several years, the solar wind composition has been systematically studied, and the long-standing gap between high energy (>1 MeV amu–1) and the plasma ion populations has been closed by instruments capable of measuring the suprathermal ion composition. In CIRs, where it has been possible to observe all the relevant populations, it turns out that the suprathermal ion population near 1.8–2.5 times the solar wind speed is the seed population that gets accelerated, not the bulk particles near the solar wind peak. These new results are of interest to the problem of Galactic Cosmic-Ray (GCR) Acceleration, since the injection and acceleration of GCRs to modest energies is likely to share many features with processes we can observe in detail in the heliosphere.  相似文献

We discuss the new information that the light elements, particularly Be, have brought to cosmic-ray studies, specifically to the issue of the origin of the seed material of the cosmic rays. The primary nature of the Be evolution strongly suggests that supernova ejecta are the sources of this material. We discuss the superbubble models that emerged as the most likely site for the acceleration of supernova ejecta, and we review the arguments that support the model in which the present epoch cosmic rays have the same origin as those that produce the light elements throughout the evolutionary history of the Galaxy. These arguments include the facts that the bulk of the Galactic supernovae are confined within the interiors of superbubbles, where their ejecta could dominate the metallicity, and that high velocity grains, which condense out of the cooling and expanding ejecta, serve as the injection source for shock acceleration, via sputtering of grain material and scattering of volatile gas atoms. We also review the evolutionary calculations that show that a secondary origin for the evolution of Be as a function of the O abundance is energetically untenable, and unnecessary if cosmic-ray transport is properly taken into account.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray scintillations registered by ground-base observations reflect, as a rule, the action of a whole number of processes proceeding in interplanetary space and Earth's magnetosphere. The study of scintillation phenomena in cosmic rays, is, in fact, divided into a number of problems connected with the interaction of charged particles of cosmic radiation with the matter and fields which they encounter in the entire length of their propagation. The cosmic-ray scintillations established by different authors from the data of ground-base and high-altitude devices for quiet and disturbed periods, as well as the theoretical calculations of different models and mechanisms of the origin and development of cosmic-ray scintillations are analyzed. High-frequency scintillations of f 10-5 Hz are shown to be precursors of an approaching shock wave, scintillations with periods of the order of 10–20 and 40–50 min being most sensitive to disturbances of interplanetary medium near the Earth. Since cosmic rays of different energies are sensitive to different processes in interplanetary space at different distances from the Earth, one can sound the conditions in interplanetary medium up to 1015 cm from the Earth by measuring particle fluxes at different energy ranges.  相似文献

Ion Temperatures as Observed in a Solar Coronal Hole   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
From the widths of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lines measured by the SUMER instrument on SOHO, it was found previously (Tu et al. 1998) that the average temperature of Ne+7, at heights (relative to h0) above the southern solar limb from 17″ to 64″, ranges between 1.3 and 5 × 106 K and of Ne+6 between 1 and 4 × 106 K. For mass-per-charge numbers greater than 4 the temperatures of the ions increase slightly with increasing mass-per-charge, while the thermal speed reveals no clear trend. We present a new data set with exposure times much longer than the ones in the previous study. The results obtained from line width analysis of Fe XII (1242 Å), Mg X (1249 Å), Mg VIII (772 Å) Ne VIII (770 Å), and Si VIII (1445 Å) support our previous study. In this case, the trend of increasing temperature begins at a mass-per-charge number of 3. A qualitative explanation based on ion-cyclotron-resonance heating within linear kinetic theory is suggested.  相似文献

We present a study of wave particle interaction in the vicinity of interplanetary shocks in the ecliptic plane, as observed by the Ulysses spacecraft. We focus here on some events, for which electromagnetic waves are observed, mainly down-stream of the shock. The whistler mode waves are studied by means of the Unified RAdio and Plasma wave experiment (URAP) and the electron distribution functions are obtained from the Ulysses' plasma experiment (SWOOPS). The results are discussed in the light of electron-cyclotron instabilities.  相似文献

The slow solar wind (< 400 km s-1) appears to initiate from the regions in the corona where magnetic fields are closed, or from the interface between streamers and other coronal regions. The nature of the acceleration of slow solar wind is not yet well known. LASCO observations of gradually evolving mass ejections offer us a good opportunity to study the speed and acceleration profiles of the slow solar wind from a distance of 1.1 up to 30 R. We present speed and acceleration profiles of slow solar wind, derived on the basis of measurements of mass flows in several cases of gradual mass ejections and present them in perspective of earlier work. A review of kinetic nonlinear theory for cosmic-ray (CR) acceleration and subsequent -ray production due to CR nuclear component in supernova remnants (SNRs) is presented. The correspondence of the expected spectrum and composition of CRs produced inside SNRs in the Galaxy with the experimental data is discussed. Possible explanations of negative results in searching high energy -ray emission from nearby SNRs are analyzed.  相似文献

After one year of operation the GEOS-1 Ion Composition Experiment has surveyed plasma composition at all local times in the L range 3 8 and the energy per charge range from thermal to 16 keV/e. From measurements made in the keV range during eleven magnetic storms we find that the percentage of heavy (M/Q > 1) ions present in the outer magnetosphere increases by a factor of 3 to 10 during disturbances. We conclude that two independent sources (solar wind, characterized by 4He2+, and ionosphere, characterized by O+) give on the average comparable contributions to injected populations, although in a single event one or the other source may dominate. However, in magnetically quiet periods protons are the dominant species with a few percent of heavy ions. With the help of special satellite manoeuvres magnetic field aligned fluxes of 0.05-3 keV/e H+, He+, O+ with traces of O2+ have been observed which may be related to ion beams found previously at lower altitudes in the auroral zone. At still lower energies ( 1 eV/e) the thermal plasma population is found to be made up of six ion species, three of which, D+, He2+ and O2+, were unknown in the magnetosphere prior to the GEOS-1 measurements. We present here a study of the evolution of doubly charged ions and their parent populations over four consecutive days. Various production mechanisms for doubly charged ions are discussed. We argue that ionization of singly charged ions by UV and energetic electrons and protons is the dominant process for plasmasphere production. Furthermore, the observed high concentrations of O2+ at high altitudes are a result of production in the upper ionosphere and plasmasphere combined with upward transport by thermal diffusion. Throughout the 1 year lifetime of GEOS-1 the ICE functioned perfectly and, because of its novel design, a short review of technical performance is included here.  相似文献

Mercury’s surface is thought to be covered with highly space-weathered silicate material. The regolith is composed of material accumulated during the time of planetary formation, and subsequently from comets, meteorites, and the Sun. Ground-based observations indicate a heterogeneous surface composition with SiO2 content ranging from 39 to 57 wt%. Visible and near-infrared spectra, multi-spectral imaging, and modeling indicate expanses of feldspathic, well-comminuted surface with some smooth regions that are likely to be magmatic in origin with many widely distributed crystalline impact ejecta rays and blocky deposits. Pyroxene spectral signatures have been recorded at four locations. Although highly space weathered, there is little evidence for the conversion of FeO to nanophase metallic iron particles (npFe0), or “iron blebs,” as at the Moon. Near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy indicate clino- and ortho-pyroxene are present at different locations. There is some evidence for no- or low-iron alkali basalts and feldspathoids. All evidence, including microwave studies, point to a low iron and low titanium surface. There may be a link between the surface and the exosphere that may be diagnostic of the true crustal composition of Mercury. A structural global dichotomy exists with a huge basin on the side not imaged by Mariner 10. This paper briefly describes the implications for this dichotomy on the magnetic field and the 3 : 2 spin : orbit coupling. All other points made above are detailed here with an account of the observations, the analysis of the observations, and theoretical modeling, where appropriate, that supports the stated conclusions.  相似文献

Radio occultation, ultraviolet, and white-light measurements have expanded our knowledge of the morphology of density and velocity in polar coronal holes, and made it possible to carry out the first systematic comparisons between the Ulysses solar wind measurements and quantitative white-light observations of the solar corona. This paper summarizes the rationale and salient features of this new approach which has been used to relate the solar wind observed by Ulysses in 1993–1995 to the inner corona. The statistical characteristics (average, standard deviation, and autocorrelation function) of the Ulysses density measurements of the fast wind are found to be mirrored in those of polarized brightness measurements of path-integrated density made by the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) Mauna Loa K-coronagraph at 1.15 R . These results reinforce the conclusions from comparisons between measurements of the outer and inner corona. They show that the polar coronal hole extends radially into the solar wind, and that sources of the fast wind are not limited to coronal holes. The dynamics of the current sheet is one of the most essential elements in magnetotail physics. Particularly, thin current sheets, which we define here as those with a thickness of less than several ion inertia lengths, are known to play an important role in the energy conversion process in the magnetotail. With its capability of multi-point observation, Cluster succeeded to obtain the current density continuously and therefore identify structures of thin current sheets. We discuss characteristics of the thin current sheets by showing their temporal evolution and the spatial structures based on several Cluster observations.  相似文献

We model interplanetary H Lyman-α (Lα) observations from Galileo UVS (Ultraviolet Spectrometer) and EUVS (Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer) (Hord et al., 1992) and the Ulysses interstellar neutral gas (GAS) instrument (Witte et al., 1992). EUVS measurements near solar maximum (max) in 1990–1992 have a peaked brightness maximum upwind due to a rather isotropic solar wind charge-exchange ionization pattern (A=0–0.25). GAS measurements from solar minimum (min) in 1997 have a plateau in the upwind direction that we model using Ulysses SWOOPS (solar wind plasma experiment) solar min data on solar wind density and velocity at different heliographic latitudes. The isotropic ionization pattern deduced from EUVS at solar max may be consistent with recent SWOOPS results (McComas et al., 2000b, c) that high speed solar wind is absent at high latitudes during solar max. Galileo and Ulysses Lα data favor higher H temperatures (15 000–18 000 K) than previous models. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray acceleration and transport is considered from the point of view of application to diffuse galactic -ray sources. As an introduction we review several source models, in particular supernovae exploding inside or near large interstellar clouds. The complex problem of cosmic ray transport in random electromagnetic fields is reduced to three cases which should be sufficient for practical purposes. As far as diffusive acceleration is concerned, apart from reviewing the basic physical principles, we point out the relation between shock acceleration and 2nd order Fermi acceleration, and the relative importance of the two processes around interstellar shock waves. For -ray source models the interaction of cosmic rays with dense clouds assumes great importance. Past discussions had been confined to static interactions of clouds with the ambient medium in the sense that no large scale mass motions in the ambient interstellar medium were considered. The well-known result then is that down to some tens of MeV or less, cosmic-ray nucleons should freely penetrate molecular clouds of typical masses and sizes. The self-exclusion of very low energy nucleons however may affect electron transport with consequences for the Bremsstrahlung -luminosity of such clouds. In this paper we consider also the dynamical interaction of dense clouds with a surrounding hot interstellar medium. Through cloud evaporation and accretion there exist mass flows in the cloud surroundings. We argue that in the case of (small) cloud evaporation the galactic cosmic rays will be essentially excluded from the clouds. The dynamic effects of cosmic rays on the flow should be minor in this case. For the opposite case of gas accretion onto (large) clouds, cosmic-ray effects on the flow will in general be large, limiting the cosmic-ray compression inside the cloud to dynamic pressure equilibrium. This should have a number of interesting and new consequences for -ray astronomy. A first, qualitative discussion is given in the last section.Proceedings of the XVIII General Assembly of the IAU: Galactic Astrophysics and Gamma-Ray Astronomy, held at Patras, Greece, 19 August 1982.  相似文献

Nine coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been detected in the solar wind by the Ulysses plasma experiment between 31° and 61° South. One of these events, which was also a magnetic cloud, was directly associated with an event observed by the soft X-ray telescope on Yohkoh in which large magnetic loops formed in the solar corona directly beneath Ulysses. This association suggests that the flux rope topology of the magnetic cloud resulted from reconnection between the legs of neighboring magnetic loops within the rising CME. The average CME speed (740 km s–1) at these latitudes was comparable to that of the normal solar wind there and is much greater than average CME speeds observed either in the solar wind in the ecliptic plane or in the corona close to the Sun. We suggest that the same basic acceleration process applies to both slow CMEs and the normal solar wind at any latitude.  相似文献

We describe the Genesis mission solar-wind sample collection period and the solar wind conditions at the L1 point during this 2.3-year period. In order to relate the solar wind samples to solar composition, the conditions under which the samples were collected must be understood in the context of the long-term solar wind. We find that the state of the solar wind was typical of conditions over the past four solar cycles. However, Genesis spent a relatively large fraction of the time in coronal-hole flow as compared to what might have been expected for the declining phase of the solar cycle. Data from the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) are used to determine the effectiveness of the Genesis solar-wind regime selection algorithm. The data collected by SWICS confirm that the Genesis algorithm successfully separated and collected solar wind regimes having distinct solar origins, particularly in the case of the coronal hole sample. The SWICS data also demonstrate that the different regimes are elementally fractionated. When compared with Ulysses composition data from the previous solar cycle, we find a similar degree of fractionation between regimes as well as fractionation relative to the average photospheric composition. The Genesis solar wind samples are under long-term curation at NASA Johnson Space Center so that as sample analysis techniques evolve, pristine solar wind samples will be available to the scientific community in the decades to come. This article and a companion paper (Wiens et al. 2013, this issue) provide post-flight information necessary for the analysis of the Genesis array and foil solar wind samples and the Genesis solar wind ion concentrator samples, and thus serve to complement the Space Science Review volume, The Genesis Mission (v. 105, 2003).  相似文献

At solar maximum, the large-scale structure of the heliospheric magnetic field (HMF) reflects the complexity of the Sun's coronal magnetic fields. The corona is characterised by mostly closed magnetic structures and short-lived, small coronal holes. The axis of the Sun's dipole field is close to the solar equator; there are also important contributions from the higher order terms. This complex and variable coronal magnetic configuration leads to a much increased variability in the HMF on all time scales, at all latitudes. The transition from solar minimum to solar maximum conditions, as reflected in the HMF, is described, as observed by Ulysses during its passage to high southern heliolatitudes. The magnetic signatures associated with the interaction regions generated by short-lived fast solar wind streams are presented, together with the highly disordered period in mid-1999 when there was a considerable reorganisation in coronal structures. The magnetic sector structure at high heliolatitudes shows, from mid-1999, a recognisable two-sector structure, corresponding to a highly inclined Heliospheric Current Sheet. A preliminary investigation of the radial component of the magnetic field indicates that it remains, on average, constant as a function of heliolatitude. Intervals of highly Alfvénic fluctuations in the rarefaction regions trailing the interaction regions have been, even if intermittently, identified even close to solar maximum. Solar energetic particles (SEPs) provide a sample of the Sun from which solar composition may be determined. Using high-resolution measurements from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS) onboard NASA’s Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft, we have studied the isotopic composition of SEPs at energies ≥20 MeV/nucleon in large SEP events. We present SEP isotope measurements of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni made in 49 large events from late 1997 to the present. The isotopic composition is highly variable from one SEP event to another due to variations in seed particle composition or due to mass fractionation that occurs during the acceleration and/or transport of these particles. We show that various isotopic and elemental enhancements are correlated with each other, discuss the empirical corrections used to account for the compositional variability, and obtain estimated solar isotopic abundances. We compare the solar values and their uncertainties inferred from SEPs with solar wind and other solar system abundances and find generally good agreement.  相似文献
