This paper reviews our present knowledge about elemental and isotopic ratios in the Giant Planets and Titan. These parameters can provide key information about the formation and evolution of these objects. Element abundances, especially after the results of the Galileo Probe Mass Spectrometer in Jupiter, strongly support the formation model invoking an initial core formation (Mizuno, 1980; Pollack et al., 1996). They also suggest that solar composition icy planetesimals (SCIPs) brought the heavy elements to Jupiter. The Jupiter value of D/H appears to be representative of the protosolar value, while the D/H enrichment observed on Uranus and Neptune is consistent with the formation scenario of these planets. The 15N/14N measurement in Jupiter seems to be representative of its protosolar value. Future measurements are expected to come from the Cassini and Herschel space mission, as well as the ALMA submillimeter observatory. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Pickup ions measured deep inside the heliosphere open a new way to determine the absolute atomic density of a number of elements and isotopes in the local interstellar cloud (LIC). We derive the atomic abundance of hydrogen and the two isotopes of helium from the velocity and spatial distributions of interstellar pickup protons and ionized helium measured with the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on the Ulysses spacecraft between 2 and 5 AU. The atomic hydrogen density near the termination shock derived from interstellar pickup ion measurements is 0.115±0.025 cm–3 and the atomic H/He ratio from these observations is found to be 7.7 ± 1.3 in the outer heliosphere. Comparing this value with the standard universal H/He ratio of 10 we conclude that filtration of hydrogen is small and that the ionization fraction of hydrogen in the LIC is low.  相似文献

Sources of organic matter and inorganic tracers on Jupiter, including solar UV photolysis, lightning discharges, and convective quenching of hot gases from the lower atmosphere, are reviewed in light of Earth-based and Voyager data with the purpose of predicting the tropospheric steady-state abundances and vertical distributions of HCN, CH2O, and other species. It is concluded that a steady-state mole fraction of HCN in the Jovian troposphere of only 10-12 could be maintained by vertical transport of hot gases from the deep atmosphere. The observed HCN abundance (roughly XHCN = 10-9) appears to be due to photochemical reactions. After HCN, the most abundant organic disequilibrium species in the troposphere is probably C2H6, derived from direct photolysis of CH4 at high altitudes, with a mole fracton of 10-10 at the H2O cloud level. Inorganic tracers of disequilibrium processes are also briefly summarized.  相似文献

SOHO: The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), together with the Cluster mission, constitutes ESA's Solar Terrestrial Science Programme (STSP), the first Cornerstone of the Agency's long-term programme Space Science — Horizon 2000. STSP, which is being developed in a strong collaborative effort with NASA, will allow comprehensive studies to be made of the both the Sun's interior and its outer atmosphere, the acceleration and propagation of the solar wind and its interaction with the Earth. This paper gives a brief overview of one part of STSP, the SOHO mission.  相似文献

This paper reviews the present state of knowledge of the abundances and physical state of interstellar atomic and molecular hydrogen. Much new data in this area have been obtained in recent rocket observations. There have also been new developments as a result of ground-based infrared and 21-cm observations, and theoretical research.Rocket observations of the Lyman- interstellar absorption line of atomic hydrogen indicate that, in many directions in the sky, atomic hydrogen is up to a factor of 10 less abundant than previously indicated by 21-cm emission measurements. In the direction of the Orion Nebula, most of the absorbing gas appears to be concentrated in the near vicinity of the nebula and to have a temperature considerably lower than the average of 100 K obtained from 21-cm emission measurements. Molecular hydrogen appears essentially absent from the general interstellar medium, as confirmed by theoretical studies of photodissociation processes. However, ground-based infrared and 21-cm studies indicate that the hydrogen in dark dust clouds is mostly molecular.  相似文献

The abundance of 3He in the present day local interstellar cloud (LIC) and in the sun has important implications for the study of galactic evolution and for estimating the production of light nuclei in the early universe. Data from the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses is used to measure the isotopic ratio of helium (3He/4He = ) both in the solar wind and the local interstellar cloud. For the solar wind, the unique high-latitude orbit of Ulysses allows us to study this ratio in the slow and highly dynamic wind in the ecliptic plane as well as the steady high-latitude wind of the polar coronal holes. The 3He+/4He+ ratio in the local cloud is derived from the isotopic ratio of pickup helium measured in the high-speed solar wind. In the LIC the ratio is found to be (2.48 -0.62 +0.68 ) × 10-4 with the 1- uncertainty resulting almost entirely from statistical error. In the solar wind, is determined with great statistical accuracy but shows systematic differences between fast and slow solar wind streams. The slow wind ratio is variable. Its weighted average value (4.08 ± 0.25) × 10-4 is, within uncertainties, in agreement with the Apollo SWC results. The high wind ratio is less variable but smaller. The average in the fast wind is (3.3 ± 0.3) × 10-4.  相似文献

Interstellar dust detected by the dust sensor onboard Ulysses was first identified after the Jupiter flyby when the spacecraft's trajectory changed dramatically (Grün et al., 1994). Here we report on two years of Ulysses post-Jupiter data covering the range of ecliptic latitudes from 0° to –54° and distances from 5.4 to 3.2 AU. We find that, over this time period, the flux of interstellar dust particles with a mean mass of 3·10–13 g stays nearly constant at about 1·10–4, m–2 s–1 ( sr)–1, with both ecliptic latitude and heliocentric distance. Also presented are 20 months of measurements from the identical dust sensor onboard the Galileo spacecraft which moved along an in-ecliptic orbit from 1.0 to 4.2 AU. From the impact direction and speeds of the measured dust particles we conclude that Galileo almost certainly sensed interstellar dust outside 2.8 AU; interstellar particles may also account for part of the flux seen between 1 and 2.8 AU.  相似文献

Magnetic field measurements made by the vector helium magnetometers on board Pioneers-10 and 11 reveal the existence of a current sheet (thickness 2R J) carrying an eastward current. Self-consistent studies of the current sheet show that the magnitude of the current is of the order of 10+2 Am+1 and that the current is carried by a hot (T>1 keV) plasma, the density of which varies between 1 cm+3 at 30R J to 10+2 cm+3 at 80R J. The current sheet is warped azimuthally and parallel to the magnetic dipole equator. The existence of an azimuthal field component indicates a poloidal plasma flow transporting some 1029 ions per second from Jupiter into the outer magnetosphere. It is shown that, if the outer magnetosphere is in a steady state, this plasma must be transported outward within the current sheet by a diffusion process which is faster than the one responsible for particle transport in the inner magnetosphere but slower than Bohm diffusion. It is suggested that the diffusion is due to the observed mhd turbulence in the current sheet. Such a model requires the existence of open field lines along which particles can escape freely into interplanetary space.Proceedings of the Symposium on Solar Terrestrial Physics held in Innsbruck, May–June 1978.  相似文献

Asteroids and comets are the remnants of the swarm of planetesimals from which the planets ultimately formed, and they retain records of processes that operated prior to and during planet formation. They are also likely the sources of most of the water and other volatiles accreted by Earth. In this review, we discuss the nature and probable origins of asteroids and comets based on data from remote observations, in situ measurements by spacecraft, and laboratory analyses of meteorites derived from asteroids. The asteroidal parent bodies of meteorites formed \(\leq 4\) Ma after Solar System formation while there was still a gas disk present. It seems increasingly likely that the parent bodies of meteorites spectroscopically linked with the E-, S-, M- and V-type asteroids formed sunward of Jupiter’s orbit, while those associated with C- and, possibly, D-type asteroids formed further out, beyond Jupiter but probably not beyond Saturn’s orbit. Comets formed further from the Sun than any of the meteorite parent bodies, and retain much higher abundances of interstellar material. CI and CM group meteorites are probably related to the most common C-type asteroids, and based on isotopic evidence they, rather than comets, are the most likely sources of the H and N accreted by the terrestrial planets. However, comets may have been major sources of the noble gases accreted by Earth and Venus. Possible constraints that these observations can place on models of giant planet formation and migration are explored.  相似文献

The solar upper atmosphere (SUA) is defined as the volume above the photosphere occupied by plasmas with electron temperatures, T e, above 2×104 K. Until the Skylab era, only little was known about the morphology of the SUA, while the quality of the spectroscopic observations was continually improving. A spherically symmetric atmosphere was assumed at that time, in which the temperature increased with height. With advances in the observational techniques, it became apparent that the morphology of the SUA was very complex even during the minimum of the magnetic activity cycle. In particular, spectroscopic measurements with high spectral and spatial resolution, which were made in the light of ultraviolet emission lines representing a variety of temperatures, led to the conclusion that most of the radiation from the solar transition region could not be explained by assuming a continuous chromosphere-corona interface, but rather by a region of unresolved fine structures. Recent observational results obtained by modern instruments, such as the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT), the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO), and the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of (SUMER) spectrograph on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), as well as the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE), and their interpretations will be presented in this review of our understanding of the morphology of the SUA.  相似文献

The feasibility of observation of EUV sources is assessed. Many stars have been detected in the EUV range ( 100–1000); line fluxes from others can be predicted. Selected astrophysical problems are reviewed that can benefit from EUV spectroscopy. Included among them are the physics and dynamics of stellar coronae, confirmation of nuclear surface burning on cataclysmic variables, evolutionary properties of white dwarfs, the helium abundance in the interstellar medium, and spectroscopic signatures of neutrino oscillations.Proceedings of the Conference Solar Physics from Space, held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), 11–14 November 1980.  相似文献

The local interstellar medium can be probed in different ways: by analyzing low energy X-ray data in the range 0.1–0.4 keV, where the radiation is absorbed by the interstellar gas at column densities in excess of about 1020 cm-2 — and can therefore be regarded as local, by determining the absorption of stellar emission spectra from nearby stars along their lines of sight by intervening gas and by directin situ measurements of those components which penetrate the heliosphere sufficiently far, provided they can be distinguished from interplanetary material. The current status of these different investigations gives the following picture: the solar system is surrounded by a bubble of hot gas (density 0.005cm-3, temperature 106 K) out to several tens of parsecs. More locally it is embedded in a small warm cloud of density 0.07cm-3, temperature 7000 K, column density 5 × 1017 cm-2 — which gives a mass of about 0.1M . The transition to the heliosphere is governed by solar UV ionization, snowploughing of the interstellar gas by the outwardly expanding solar wind and the bow shock. The heliosphere is the region inside the solar wind terminal shock. Classically it would be regarded as not yet affected by (or aware of) the obstacle ahead. Practically, the existence of the interstellar medium makes itself felt even far inside the heliosphere by the penetration of neutral gas, dust, plasma waves, shock accelerated particles and cosmic rays. These are the local probes of the interstellar medium.  相似文献

The requirements of systematic exploration of the outer solar system have been intensively studied by a Science Advisory Group (SAG) of consulting scientists for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Comets and Asteroids were excluded from this study, as a separate group is planning missions to these bodies. This paper and accompanying articles on specific related scientific subjects written by members of the SAG, summarize the findings and recommendations of this group. These recommendations should not be interpreted as official NASA policy. Following some general introductory remarks, a brief sketch is given of the development and current status of scientific missions to the inner planets by the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. With this perspective, the development of the U.S. program for investigation of the outer solar system is described. The scientific focus of outer solar system exploration has been studied in detail. The relationship of the outer planetary bodies to one another and to the inner planets, as parts in a unified solar system evolved from a primitive solar nebula, is emphasized. Deductions from outer solar system investigations regarding the conditions of the solar nebula at the time of planetary formation have been considered. Investigations have been proposed that are relevant to studies of the atmospheric structure and dynamics, internal structure of the planets, satellite composition and morphology, and planetary and interplanetary fields and energetic particles. The mission type and sequence required to conduct a systematic exploration of the outer solar system has been developed. Technological rationales for the suggested missions are discussed in general terms. The existing NASA program for outer solar system exploration is comprised of four missions:
  1. Pioneer 10 fly-by mission to Jupiter and beyond, currently underway, with launch on 3 March 1972;
  2. Pioneer G, intended for a similar mission with planned launch 2–22 April 1973; and
  3. Two Mariner Jupiter/Saturn fly-bys in 1977, with experiment selection scheduled for late 1972 and detailed engineering design during 1972–74.
The Science Advisory Group advocates that detailed mission planning be undertaken on the following additional missions for launches during the late 1970's and early 1980's. Together with existing plans, these would provide a balanced, effective exploration program.
  1. 1976 Pioneer Jupiter/Out-of-Ecliptic (One Mission)
  2. 1979 Mariner Jupiter/Uranus Fly-bys (Two Missions)
  3. 1979 Pioneer Entry Probe to Saturn 1980 Pioneer Entry Probe to Uranus via Saturn Fly-by (Three Missions)
  4. 1981/1982 Mariner Jupiter Orbiter (Two Missions).

Geiss  J.  Gloeckler  G. 《Space Science Reviews》1998,84(1-2):239-250
The mass spectrometric determinations of the isotopic composition of helium in the solar wind obtained from (1) the Apollo Solar Wind Composition (SWC) experiment, (2) the Ion Composition Instrument (ICI) on the International Sun Earth Explorer 3 (ISEE-3), and (3) the Solar Wind Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses are reviewed and discussed, including new data given by Gloeckler and Geiss (1998). Averages of the 3He/4He ratio in the slow wind and in fast streams are given. Taking account of separation and fractionation processes in the corona and chromosphere, 3He/4He = (3.8 ± 0.5) × 10-4 is derived as the best estimate for the present-day Outer Convective Zone (OCZ) of the sun. After corrections of this ratio for secular changes caused by diffusion, mixing and 3He production by incomplete H-burning (Vauclair, 1998), we obtain (D + 3He)/H = (3.6±0.5) × 10-5 for the Protosolar Cloud (PSC). Adopting 3He/H = (1.5±0.2) × 10-5 for the PSC, as is indicated from the 3He/4He ratio in the planetary gas component of meteorites and in Jupiter (Mahaffy et al., 1998), we obtain (D/H)protosolar = (2.1 ± 0.5) × 10-5. Galactic evolution studies (Tosi, 1998) show that the measured D and 3He abundances in the Protosolar Cloud and the Local Interstellar Cloud (Linsky, 1998; Gloeckler and Geiss, 1998), lead to (D/H)primordial = (2 - 5) × 10-5. This range corresponds to a universal baryon/photon ratio of (6.0 ± 0.8) × 10-10, and to b = 0.075 ± 0.015.  相似文献

One-dimensional hydrodynamic calculations have been done of 1E51 erg explosions in 15M stars. We have appended a steep external density gradient to the pre-supernova model of Weaver et al and find: (1) the outer shock wave decelerates throughout the pre-Sedov phase, (2) the expanding stellar envelope and the shocked interstellar material are Rayleigh-Taylor stable until the Sedov phase, and (3) steep internal density gradients are R-T unstable during the early expansion and may be the source of high velocity knots seen in Cas A.  相似文献

The use of the Grazing Incidence Solar Telescope (GRIST) for the observation of celestial sources other than the Sun in the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) is discussed. By use of galactic point sources as sample objects, the capabilities offered by the presently proposed telescope and its focal plane instruments set are shown to be substantial, in spite of the short duration of a single Shuttle mission. This seems to legitimate complementary technical studies needed to demonstrate the feasibility of stellar pointing.Proceedings of the Conference Solar Physics from Space, held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), 11–14 November 1980.  相似文献

The fundamental properties of 24 Galactic WN stars are determined from analyses of their optical, UV and IR spectra using sophisticated model atmosphere codes (Hillier, 1987, 1990). Terminal velocities, stellar luminosities, temperatures, mass loss rates and abundances of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are determined. Stellar parameters are derived using diagnostic lines and interstellar reddenings found from fitting theoretical continua to observed energy distributions. Our results confirm that the parameters of WN stars span a large range in temperature (T*=30–90,000 K), luminosity (log L*/L=4.8–5.9), mass loss (M=0.9–12×10–5 M yr–1) and terminal velocity (v =630–3300 km s–1). Hydrogen abundances are determined, and found to be low in WNEw and WNEs stars (<15% by mass) and considerable in most WNL stars (1–50%). Metal abundances are also determined with the nitrogen content found to lie in the range N/He=1–5×10–3 (by number) for all subtypes, and C/N 0.02 in broad agreement with the predictions of Maeder (1991). Enhanced O/N and O/C is found for HD 104994 (WN3p) suggesting a peculiar evolutionary history. Our results suggest that single WNL+abs stars may represent an evolutionary stage immediately after the Of phase. Since some WNE stars exist with non-negligible hydrogen contents (e.g. WR136) evolution may proceed directly from WNL+abs to WNE in some cases, circumventing the luminous blue variable (LBV) or red supergiant (RSG) stage.  相似文献

Two-dimensional maps of the Crab Nebula have been synthesized in 22–64 keV range through the modulation collimator experiment. The effective angular resolution is about 15. The result indicates that the Crab morphology is strictly controlled by the pulsar.  相似文献

Interstellar dust was first identified by the dust sensor onboard Ulysses after the Jupiter flyby in February 1992. These findings were confirmed by the Galileo experiment on its outbound orbit from Earth to Jupiter. Although modeling results show that interstellar dust is also present at the Earth orbit, a direct identification of interstellar grains from geometrical arguments is only possible outside of 2.5 AU. The flux of interstellar dust with masses greater than 6 · 10–14 g is about 1 · 10–4 m –2 s –1 at ecliptic latitudes and at heliocentric distances greater than 1AU. The mean mass of the interstellar particles is 3 · 10–13 g. The flux arrives from a direction which is compatible with the influx direction of the interstellar neutral Helium of 252° longitude and 5.2° latitude but it may deviate from this direction by 15 – 20°.  相似文献
